***Official 2011 Bengals off/pre-season/season/postseason! Thread (1 Viewer)

The Deuce Lutui era has ended as he flunked his physical with the Bengals. Back to the same ugly situation at Left Guard :(

heard that clements contract was 2 yrs 10.5 with 6m guaranteed. seems like a fine deal if theres reasonable chance the guy can still play.

I agree, that's a very reasonable deal. Hopefully we can put the leftover money into an OLB or a LG. That it's only a 2 year deal protects them if he has declined and allows them time to draft a new CB in next year's draft.-QG

Good to see they are staying active even if they aren't landing the top tier guys. The Clements deal could be a bargain.

If they can finalize Whitner, that will fill a huge hole. Sounds like they are still talking to linebackers as well. I could see them bringing back Brandon Johnson if they can't land anyone better. We know they're at least looking at OG because of the Lutui situation. Its been ugly, but they may end up doing OK in this scramble. If nothing else, they're at least TRYING for a legit plan at each position, which I was starting to doubt.

Bengals release first preseason depth chart (which Marvin says isn't worth the paper it's printed on and it's only 'cause he has to do it).

Anyway, highlights are that Dalton is #1 on depth chart and Andre Smith is #1 on the RT depth chart.

Um, oh and apparently Quan Cosby is now a #1 WR  They updated the site. Simpson is #1 opposite Green.

Anyway here you go:

3rd-round pick LB Dontay Moch broke his foot in the preseason game at Detroit and will miss at least 8 weeks they are saying.

Please, NFL, I'm begging you, can you stop giving us preseason games at Detroit? We always get our draft picks injured before they even have a chance :(

(see Kenny Irons and Ki-Jana Carter)

Andre's deal will now end after the 2012 season. The crazy this is that he's slimmed way down to 335 and is having a good camp. There were only a couple plays in the Detroit game where he looked bad and he was in good enough condition that he played the entire half without tapping out for a single play. I was intrigued by how they were using him - on a lot of the running plays he was moving around a lot (i.e. moving forward into the 2nd level to block guys for example). Now that the Bengals have declined to pick up his option, he's going to totally go off and be like a Pro Bowl caliber player :(

According to Schefter's twitter, Linky the Bengals traded an undisclosed draft pick the the 49ers for Taylor Mays. True the 49ers had issues with him, but if the Bengals gave up something like one of the picks they got in the Ocho deal I have to say I like this. The kid is seen as a tweener, it is true, but he seemed like a good fit ahead of the draft last year for the Who Deys in terms of Zimmer's style and he's been known to work magic before.

The Bengals cut RunPee! I guess the big question might be whether they choose to roster just 2 QB as LeFevour didn't play in the 3rd preseason game at all. Hobson mentioned the possibility of the Bengals keeping an extra o-lineman instead. I'll throw my own speculation in that perhaps the Bengals have their eye on a likely cut from another team as a 3rd QB. Though who that would be I have no idea.

I feel a bit bad for Jordan Palmer getting caught in the middle of things but at the same time I tend to think his brother was the main reason he ever got on the roster in the first place. It'll be interesting to see if he's given anything resembling a chance elsewhere or perhaps even ends up in the UFL.

-QG

Fun fact. The Bengals have won 7 straight preseason games (in the last 7 years) vs. the Colts. You might say that this game seems to mean a little more to one of these teams...

Benson Released! ... From Prison.

Hopefully no suspension. The Bobbie Williams suspension is a tough blow, though. Still, with the resigning of Whit and Hall I feel a tiny bit better about this offseason.

Bumped for me to look at later and also on the news that Mike Brown has actually done something right!

What looked like the biggest clusterfudge of an off-season at the beginning is now turning to gold.

Clements coming in for 1/2 the price of Joseph has been worth it - he's made some big plays. (He's not at the level of JoJo but overall having him and Hall for $15m is probably more sound in terms of budget that going $20m with Hall and Joseph).

Can't say enough good things about Dalton. :bowtie: to myself as he's the guy I wanted them to get all along.

Still think that we're looking at 7 or 8 wins this year (I'll stay cautiously pessimistic) but come 2013 I think they'll be bustin' up the league big time :football:

Have to laugh at my initial post (which was from like Week 15 of last season) talking about Carson needing to renegotiate. Missed the mark a little there ;)

Fun with my first reaction to Palmer trade demand...

Mort and Scheffter reported today that Palmer is going to request a trade to a west coast team with the threat of retirement if the Bengals do not meet his demand.
Does retirement threaten the cap going forward (assuming a new CBA with a cap commences?)We've got the room to absorb and hit and actually can get some extensions now with the albatross contract gone

Is there really a team out there that is willing to pay him THAT contract?!? Affirmative

Many things can be said about Mike Brown, but one thing that cannot be said is that he hasn't been anything but good to Carson Palmer. Guess we can change all our mock drafts to Cam Newton now...Fortunately that didn't happen. And I stand by that - even with as great as Newton has been for Carolina he wouldn't have worked for us. We'd have ruined him.

I actually hope they make him retire. I mean what kind of pick can we expect to get for him at this point? A 7th-rounder? Enjoy retirement I say. Glad to see we got slightly more than a 7th-rounder

On a side note, guess this is all the confirmation we need that Brat is back, eh? I've never been happier to be so wrong

On a 2nd side note, is it even possible to trade players right now given the situation with the CBA? Pretty sure teams can't sign anybody right now (excepting the 4 still playing). This was true, basically, except for that tiny window where the lockout was briefly lifted. This did not prevent a million posts and articles about the Bengals needing to trade Carson right away.

Such a huge week and we could be getting Rey, Pacman, and Gresham all back for this one.

With a 6-2 record, we do have some margin for error, but I'm thinking this week is our best chance out of the 4 games with Pitts/Balt. We're as healthy as we've been all year and the confidence has to be higher than ever. I think we probably match up better with Pitts than Baltimore too, just based on our defensive line. We should be able to exploit their offensive line and get to Ben a LOT. Pacman being back for this one would be huge. Another nickle-back TD last week with him out. Probably Clements/Safety on Wallace, leaving Hall and Pacman to deal with Brown and Ward.

On offense, the balance has been awesome so far, but the defensive competition goes up the next 5 weeks big time. Can the run game remain productive against the Steelers? Can we keep staying on schedule for first downs? I'm not sure that Pitts or Baltimore has anyone that can cover AJ 1 on 1, but we will need to give Dalton time if we're going to throw down the field like we have been.

I feel like this is a 50/50 game this week that will determine a lot.

Absolutely, cheese. I think this week is gonna tell us where we're at. Very excited to see how it turns out and really stoked about this team either way. I think the play of the respective defensive lines is going to tell the tale. I'm hoping that Roethlisberger isn't able to pull his usual Houdini stuff when we are able to get pressure on him.

Clements has been an awesome addition. It was tough to lose JoJo but $20m tied up in the top two CB would've been a lot tougher to deal with. I hope we can hang onto Nate after this year.

And thanks for bumping this thread :)

Who Dey!

Long way to go of course, but that Jets loss was helpful to the chances that the Who Deys have in terms of the pl-pl-...

Do I dare say it?

-QG

Pretty sure we can't be eliminated even if we lose next week. Hooray for meaningful football at the end of the season! :excited:

-QG

Looked at it a little more and TECHNICALLY the Bengals can't get eliminated but if SD and Oakland both win and the Bengals lose we would need them to tie each other in week 17 to have a chance :scared:

Obviously the simple scenario is for the Bengals to win 2 and have the Jets lose 1.

We still do have a chance to make it if both teams win out but we'd need a lot of help to get the strength-of-victory tiebreaker on our side. I mean a lot of help.

Now, if San Diego and Oakland both lose next week, a Bengals loss isn't as damaging if the Jets win. Basically we'd be in a scenario where we need a win and a Jets loss in the finale. (We'd get through on better conference record. Even if Tennessee made it a 3-way tie, the Jets would get knocked out in the conference record tiebreaker and then we win over Tennessee based on head to head).

Still nice that it can be talked about at all :)

-QG

Ya, the playoff scenerios are still pretty complicated, but they all look better than they did a week ago. The blown Houston game still looms large, but it definitely could still happen. There is a good chance everything will be riding on that Baltimore game.

Bengals fans what’s going on with the defense?

Are there any key injuries that I should know about?

How does the run defense look this week?

Woohoo! :pickle: :excited:

Nice to have a meaningful game in week 17. Here's hoping for some week 18 football :banned:

anyway here are the Bengals scenarios:

1) win or tie

or

2) Jets tie/loss and Raiders tie/loss

or

3) Jets tie/loss and Broncos tie/loss

So there you go.

Who Dey!

I would love to see this team just finish off an opponent.

I hate Benson.

If this defense plays the way they did the first 3 qtrs, they will be tough to beat. The pressure they were getting on the QB was impressive.

It's all simple now. Win and you keep playing. Week 17 is a playoff game. So nice to have relevant football at the end of the season.

Mike Brown has burned this fanbase enough that they figure this is a mirage once again. Well if the people that call into local sports talk shows are any indication. This game will sell out though.

I was looking for some info on y'all's game next week and found this article: link

I'm shocked that this game might not sell out.

What the heck is going on in Cincinnati?
The worst managed team in sports has crushed the season ticket base. It's really hard to sell out a whole stadium on single game sales. Even harder on holidays where most people have annual plans. The players and coaches deserve a sellout though.

:goodposting: This.Cincy is a town that passed a referendum funding the stadium when the team was completely awful (to save the team and also because there was the promise that better revenue would bring more :moneybag: spent on the team). This is a promise that people feel was broken. In spite of this, the teams sold out for a number of years starting in the Marvin era - really if you look at the team's record in most of those years the support has been quite remarkable. As a side note, you'll notice that very few stadiums get to a referendum these days because even in the so-called best football markets they often have trouble passing. Throw on top of that a very troubled local economy and it's very expensive for fans to take in a game - people just don't have the spare benjamins to go. People also resent the sweetheart deal the Bengals have gotten and their extreme reluctance to east terms when it is crushing the county budget. (Side note - the Brown family is doing well enough to buy out the other 30% of the team for cash - they have $100m lying around to do this). Add to that the Charlie (Mikey) Brown effect where it looks like things are turning the corner and at the last minute the football seems to get pulled away. People don't want to be fooled again and even with better times appearing on the horizon the memory of the worst press conference ever (the one announcing Marvin's return where basically Mikey pretty much said nothing would change) and it's just been hard.Does someone living in Cincy know what the ratings have been for the road games for the Bengals have been? I bet they are the strongest in years. It's a unique situation unlike other teams that have attendance issues.-QG

Yep. They've been getting huge ratings for the road games.

Got the numbers for comparison by any chance? I just think it's probably the best illustration of where the fan base is at mentally. Love the team, Hate the Mikey.Btw, didn't catch this, but Lippy is retiring (Warning Pic NSFW - also not safe for lunch): Linky

I guess they aren't as great as I thought but still better than last year.

No local TV coverage again for the Bengals home game Sunday, the fifth time this season. Bengals beat writer Joe Reedy says increased wins, TV ratings and talk about the Bengals have not translated into increased ticket sales in his story today.

Last Sunday’s loss in Pittsburgh averaged a 30 household rating and 50% audience share on WKRC-TV, the second-lowest rating this season (definitely not helped by the blow-out by halftime). Bengals games this year have averaged a 33.6 rating, an 8% increase over last season (31.1).

Through five home games, the Bengals are averaging a league-low 49,619 fans, which is 75% percent of capacity at Paul Brown Stadium.

33.6 seems like a huge rating though as an average. What do other teams average?-QG

Congrats to the long-suffering Bengals fans on the board.

Both of you. ;)

I actually give you a GREAT shot of heading to the second round. Anything can happen then.

Awesome crowd at Paul brown today. The schedule next year is loaded with big money draws in the cowboys, giants, broncos and raiders. Everyone goes back to 0-0 now so they might as well win it all.

This is the second time Carson Palmer has helped the Bengals reach the playoffs :excited:

QG change the second line of your title to that

Congrats QG......Seems like you're in the Jets role this year so, Cincy will hopefully go out, beat some teams and take it to the Championship Game - I had a BLAST the past 2 years holding playoff parties and being the underdog fan. :banned:

Thanks :) Hope it goes more '10 Packers or '07 Giants - but that'd be greedy :D -QG

LOL - gotta do that draft time. As usual Carson came up a little late helping us as Tebow had already provided the spot :tebow: ;) -QG

Call me a sucker, but I actually think the Bengals should win this game. Being picked by the pundits to finish dead last to start the season, there should be virtually no pressure on the Bengals. The season is already a huge success from my viewpoint, a very young team gaining valuable "important game" experience is awesome, a win is pure upside. Combine this with getting the extra first rounder this year, and another 2nd next year and things are looking bright in Bengaldom. I think this is a much more stable locker room than what we saw the last time this team was looking good and is more likely to be built for long term success.
