***Official*** 2011 FBG Subscriber Contest Thread (3 Viewers)

Since I keep changing my mind and cannot decide, here is what I have so far. I will post my team as if you have ever seen my fantasy results, you will know that the following players are all now jinxed.

I know everyone keeps changing your players, but was wondering what everyone thinks of my picks.

Feel free to trash away.

QB - Philip Rivers - SD/6 - $24

QB - Sam Bradford - STL/5 - $17

RB - Michael Turner - ATL/8 - $27

RB - Knowshon Moreno - DEN/6 - $18

RB - Tim Hightower - WAS/5 - $14

RB - Danny Woodhead - NE/7 - $10

RB - Javon Ringer - TEN/6 - $3

RB - Ben Tate - HOU/11 - $3

RB - Marion Barber - CHI/8 - $3

WR - Wes Welker - NE/7 - $23

WR - Jeremy Maclin - PHI/7 - $20

WR - Mike Sims-Walker - STL/5 - $11

WR - Plaxico Burress - NYJ/8 - $10

WR - Lee Evans - BAL/5 - $10

WR - Jacoby Jones - HOU/11 - $6

WR - Antonio Brown - PIT/11 - $3

TE - Owen Daniels - HOU/11 - $12

TE - Aaron Hernandez - NE/7 - $10

TE - Tony Scheffler - DET/9 - $3

PK - Matt Bryant - ATL/8 - $4

PK - Rob Bironas - TEN/6 - $3

TD - Philadelphia Eagles - PHI/7 - $7

TD - Detroit Lions - DET/9 - $6

TD - Cleveland Browns - CLE/5 - $3

Prior to the entry deadline, approximately half of my posts are legit strategy and the other half are shtick. I like discussing the contest but I'm also not going to go out of my way to help people improve their faulty entries. The hawks amongst us know which posts are which. (Hint for the noobs: the "many kickers" strategy is legit.)

After the deadline it will be all shtick-free strategy for the rest of the season. Then next year, rinse and repeat.

Too much spent on TD. Not enough kickers (seriously).

Yeah this is very odd to me. The loading up on Kickers idea.
Have to agree with Iggy actually. 3-4 kickers is well worth it.For the record, my roster has 3 kickers. It's a no brainer decision to take 3 PK each year.

An even dozen for me, including 2 TE's and 6 WRs.

I went with quantity over quality this year-29 players. My highest salaried are Forte, Brandon Marshall and Brandon Lloyd. I ended up with exactly 3x as many players as starters at every position (3 QB + K + D, 6 RB, 9 WR) except TE where I have 4. Not the most impressive looking on paper. I also had a lot of trouble with week 5 byes and had to rejigger a few times as a result

I'm rolling with Stafford & Bradford. But at times I've had Stafford +Bradford + McCoy or Brady + Stafford . Ive been burnt on only going 2 QBs before

Stafford & Bradford are a risky duo but make the roster so much deeper in other areas.

Still contemplating running with 12 WRs with none over $10

I contemplated something similar to that earlier on myself, but just couldn't make myself do it. Needed at least two guys I felt 'good' about, so when with ten wideouts instead, with eight under $10. Of course, now I'm afeared I'm picking the wrong two to 'feel good about', but I don't expect I'll be changing them.I'm completely wanting to change up half my RBs now, however. Think I may have too many and may swap out quantity for one more quality body instead.TEs, QBs and TDs are locked in. I really need to come up with something for the rest and just put down the pencil already.

Dear Footballguys,

Could you please lock this contest early? My mouse-clicking finger is starting to wear out from all of the changes I am making and my brain is starting to hurt. Or perhaps you could just lock my team??

No, wait. Just thought of a tweak I need to make. But seriously, lock my team in 10 minutes.

Better give me til the morning. But that's it. Maybe.

I learned a little from this board last year. No more 18 man teams for me.

3 QBs - 54

6 RBs - 91

10 WRs - 73

2 TEs - 16

3 Ks - 10

2 Ds - 6

26 All Stars - 250

1 Contest - Priceless

Word.I did that last season and it was working great.....until one key injury and a couple late byes took care of things for me. Missed the cut in week 11 by less than a handful of points. *grumble*

ok, too much spent on defense, they don't score enough to spend big money on, three kickers are good, but you happened to pick two that have the same bye weeks and you spent too much, if you have three you can take all $2 kickers and one is bound to hit, or take the 14 you spend and get five kickers and and spend the $4 left on Marion Barber or soemthing. QB is risky, thye are big scorers with 6pt a tD and you are taking no stud (for sure stud that is). if Stafford doesn't deliver, you are out. Remember taht you start three WR every week, and sometimes a flex. you don't have much room for injuries, but you could be OK. But look at the week that Larry Fitz is off, are you comfortable with three remaining guys. also, not that is shows in this post this year, but there had been alot of analysis done that shows a higher winning percentage with the larger rosters, meaning 30. no one ever believes it, but the stats don't lie.

thats all I got

Hey Joe,Pretty solid team, but you've spent too much on your top three RBs. $89 for Ray Rice, Rashard Mendenhall and Felix Jones is overkill. I'd delete one of those RBs and spend the money on one top WR or split it between two mid-tier WRs.

Ok, I decided to test the impact of 2 kickers vs. 3 kickers vs. 4 kickers (with pen and paper). I went to the game logs (2009 was the latest posted) and picked 4 kickers: Longwell (132 points), Feely (122 points), Bironas (122 points), and Gould (105 points). Then I selected 2 of these kickers and did a best-ball for the 1st 16 weeks of the 2009 season. Then I added a 3rd kicker and calculated the number of additional points that the 3rd kicker added. Here's what I got. Note that it's standard FBG scoring in the logs (I made no adjustments for contest scoring).Feely + Gould (as 1st 2 kickers) - Longwell (as 3rd kicker) adds 21 points (to the total produced by the Feely/Gould combo)

Feely + Gould - Bironas (as 3rd kicker) adds 22 points

Bironas + Longwell - Gould (as 3rd kicker) adds 14 points

Bironas + Gould - Feely (as 3rd kicker) adds 12 points

Longwell + Gould - Bironas (as 3rd kicker) adds 23 points

Longwell + Gould - Feely (as 3rd kicker) adds 16 points

Gould + Bironas - Longwell (as 3rd kicker) adds 27 points

Gould + Bironas - Feely (as 3rd kicker) adds 14 points

For the impact of a 4th kicker, here are the results:

Feely + Gould + Longwell - Bironas (as 4th kicker) adds 18 points

Longwell + Gould + Bironas - Feely (as 4th kicker) adds 12 points

Bironas + Longwell + Feely - Gould (as 4th kicker) adds 14 points

Gould + Bironas + Feely - Longwell (as 4th kicker) adds 24 points

To summarize:

For weeks 1-16, adding a 3rd kicker increased the total kicker points (best-ball) by an average of 18.6 points (1.16 points per week), with a range from 12 to 27 -- or from 0.75 to 1.69 points per week. Adding a 4th kicker increased the total kicker points (best-ball) by an average of 17.0 points (1.06 points per week), with a range from 12 to 24 -- or from 0.75 to 1.50 points per week.

So, I doubt that using 3 kickers vs. 2 kickers will add more than 2 points per week, on average -- and it may add less than 1 point per week, depending on selection of kickers. Also, adding a 4th kicker will likely add between 0.75 and 1.50 points per week.

As punishment, I added a 5th kicker, Nate Kaeding, who scored 146 points in 2009. If you add Kaeding to the first 4 kickers (Longwell, Bironas, Feely and Gould), he adds 14 points (0.88 points per week) in a best-ball format for weeks 1-16. Since Kaeding was one of the highest-scoring kickers that year, I doubt if adding a 5th kicker will yield more than 1 additional point per week.

Certainly, adding each additional kicker is expected to increase the total number of points for the kicker position. Compared to a single kicker, a second kicker increases total kicker points by an average of 2.47 points per week (for the 4 kickers above). Going to 3 kickers from 2 kickers will probably add a maximum of 2 points per week (and maybe less than 1 point per week). Compared to 2 kickers, having 4 kickers on your roster will probably add 2-2.5 points per week. Going to 5 kickers will probably add 3-4 points per week (compared to 2 kickers). Are these additional points worth the dollars and roster slots that must be devoted to the additional kickers? I say no, but everyone is certainly entitled to their opinion.

If you have extra dollars and roster slots left over, certainly add a couple kickers -- they're cheap and will no doubt add a few points and maybe save you from elimination in a close week. Although it's a very low-scoring position, you definitely need to cover the kicker position. I think you can do that with 2 strong kickers (like Suisham, etc.) for $6 or $7, and I don't think 3 kickers is unreasonable. I question whether more than 3 kickers is a good strategy. I still think it's a better strategy to take your chances on a couple of longshot WRs. Every year, a couple of these value-priced players with good upside will hit and be great investments.

Ok, I decided to test the impact...
Drinen did a good analysis of this a year or two ago. I'll try to dig it up later this week. Just one thing occurs to me now though We have to be careful when talking about points-per-game averages, e.g. the idea that a third kicker adds 1-2 PPG. In reality, that third kicker isn't adding a single point to your score each week. Rather, its more likely that some weeks he won't add anything to your score, and then some weeks he'll add 5+ to your score. Different way to think about the marginal utility of the additional kicker(s).

My first thought is that you better be expecting top 5 numbers out of Bradford/Kolb. If you make the top 250, you will be going against guys starting Rodgers, Rivers, and Brees. If you do think between those two QB, you will be getting elite production, great. But if you just think they both represent value at their price, you should rethink. Because if someone else starts Rivers, and gets Rivers numbers, and gets Mendenhall production from someone 8 dollars cheaper than Mendenhall, you are toast. I like Bradford and Kolb as part of a platoon, but that's the risk.

Iggy brings a key point. When we did this analysis discussion last year, you have to throw out the PPG concept. In reality, you need guys to blow-up at different times in the season. What makes more sense is when you use particular kickers in your lineup. If you really want a good idea, pull a couple of rosters from the last couple of years entries and look at their kickers and how they are used. It's when that $2 kicker puts 4 FGs through and your stud kicker kicks 4 XP, you'll be appreciating that cheap third $2 kicker you added to your roster.

Average wise you are correct....but it's not that simple. Over the course of the season the average isn't going to be big. But on any given week, your two kickers could throw up a very low score if they don't hit a field goal. By adding another kicker or two (3 or 4 total), it gives you another shot at having a big week from the kicker position. Since you never know when that is going to happen, it is better to have more than two kickers to give yourself a better chance at getting a higher score. You will be "kicking" yourself when you miss the cutoff by less than a couple points and your two kickers had off weeks.

Just finished my revisions for the holiday weekend. I like this version much better than the one entered going into the weekend.

At thois point I am spending the following:

QBs $42

RBs $73 - decreased $17

WRs $97 - inceased $28

TEs $20 - decreased $11

PKs $8 - increased $1

DSTs $10 - decreased $1

I still have nine WRs, but went a little heavier at the top and spread out the bye weeks better for both the RBs and the WRs.

total roster size of 28

You need to make this your team. Go with your best instinct rather than follow suggestions from the board. You'll defintely enjoy the ride more if you select the bike.

As far as kickers go, the winner in 2009 had 3. One $3 and two $2. Here are their weekly scores:

$3 kicker: 9, 9, 6, 3,15, 0, 0,16,10,15,14,11, 5,22,11, 7

$2 kicker: 9, 7, 6,15, 0, 2, 4,14, 3,10,16, 5, 5, 2, 1,16

$2 kicker: 11,10,13,5,10,11, 0, 1, 6, 5, 3,17,18, 4,18,12

One thing on the multiple K discussion (which also applies to multiple Ds) is that not only do they increase your average score, they should reduce your standard deviation. If your fourth kicker only counts twice in the year, but he gives you a 10-point game twice when you would have had a 2-point game instead, that's quite valuable in elimination formats.

So, using these numbers, K1 (153 points), K2 (115), K3 (144):K1+K2 gave 182.

K1+K3 gave 207

K2+K3 gave 193

K1+K2+K3 gave 227

So having three kickers was worth 20 points over the course of the season compared with the best pairing of two kickers, which isn't that much (although the cost is also low when you have 30 roster spots). But in any case, some of the other effects are more interesting.

Standard deviation:

K1: 6.0

K2: 5.5

K3: 5.8

K1+K2: 5.4

K1+K3: 5.3

K2+K3: 4.6

K1+K2+K3: 4.2

Weeks below 10 points:

K1: 8

K2: 11

K3: 7

K1+K2: 6

K1+K3: 2

K2+K3: 3

K1+K2+K3: 1

So, the scoring from K1+K2+K3 was more consistent than from any pairing of two kickers; and one of the weeks from K1+K3 was actually a zero. That's pretty huge in an elimination contest.
