***Official 2011 World Series Thread - Rangers vs. Cardinals*** (2 Viewers)

The Rangers look defeated, especially Ron Washington. I almost feed bad for them.

But six more outs to go. And I expect it to be a tough six outs. After last night, no lead is safe.

Congrats cards fans. Has to be the most improbable championship of all time. This will be talked about for decades.

:goodposting:Congrats to RnR and others. Fun to have a vested interest in the last game of the season two years in a row. Sucks to lose them both.

Orel Hersheiser was saying today that the Rangers were looking to celebrate last night instead of concentrating on details. He cited Feliz walking Berkman and then Oliver not hitting his spots against two pretty crappy hitters. He said the Rangers were too excited and not nervous enough. Not sure if that is true but when you are one strike away from winning the World Series two different times in two different innings, is heartbreaking. But I think it has happened in sports before, and will happen again. Why Washington didn't bring back Feliz for the 10th last night will haunt Ranger fans until they win a World Series. I feel a bit bad for Rangers fans, once Goggins gets on your bandwagon things tend to end badly.

Will be shocked if the Rangers aren't the next dynasty in MLB. LOADS of talent and $$$
Congrats to Cards fans, that was a pretty amazing run from Sept 1 on.

Their last two WS titles are this one and 2006 when they won 83 games.Great runs.
this team was better than the 2006 team but this run was more improbable just cuz of how far back they were, how they beat the stud Phillies, and their two comebacks in game 6. Perhaps the most incredible sports story in professional sports history.

Wow.

Great season and Series, Rangers fans. Hope you get one soon, but ecstatic to get this one.

I'll bet the field on that one too

That has to be possibly the worst ball call in the history of baseball given the pitch and the context.
Pitch and context don't matter when it comes to balls and strikes. A ball is a ball and a strike is a strike
except when it's a ball according to the umpire. I don't think you understand what I mean by pitch and context.Pitch: That pitch clearly got at least six inches of the outside part of the plate. On top of that, the strike zone had until that point been generally much more generous on the outside of the plate then the inside. (As is typically the case. Rangers pitchers also got several bad calls on the inside part of the plate, but this is far from unusual.) There was absolutely no question about the height of the pitch; it was at the middle of the vertical strike zone. And it's not like that was a sweeping curveball that danced it's way into the strike zone. That was a strike from the moment it left the pitcher's hand until the second the umpire butchered that call.Context: Obviously it's game 7 of the World Series, so the game can't have any more meaning. It's a full count, there are 2 outs, and the bases are loaded, so calling a strike ends the threat, and calling a ball gives the Cardinals another run. At the time, the Rangers were only down 3-2, we all know they can score runs in a hurry, and there was plenty of time left in the game. But that pitch not only gave the Cardinals the run, it gave them the momentum and prompted Washington to put in a pitcher that clearly wasn't quite ready. That makes a 3-2 game a 5-2 game, which causes the Rangers to press when they otherwise wouldn't have in a one-run game. That one call makes it an entirely different ballgame.I have a lot of respect for the Cardinals for what they accomplished over the last couple months. No one here thought they would do a damn thing worthwhile at the end of August when they were over 10 games out of both races. By the end of the last Brewers series here, I could pretty much pick up any ticket and sit wherever I wanted...it was like I was suddenly watching baseball in Florida. But the Cardinals apparently never gave up on the season, and their fans came crawling back when they started putting that deciding run together. Then they beat the top two seeds on the road in the NL playoffs, and they outplayed a very good Rangers team. It's very likely the Cardinals still would've hung on to win this game. However, I wish at the very least that they would have done it without the benefit of one little call that affected the game to the magnitude it did.Congrats to the Cardinals fans. Obviously it was a pretty special season. But when you see a Brewers fan, please try not to gloat too much. Remember, you've been here before (and not very long ago), and we never have. Imagine the Blues having the season of a lifetime, only to lose in the championship to the Red Wings. Then you might start to understand.Sorry for the long post.

I still can't believe it.

This time two months ago, I thought this Cardinals team was completely just mailing it in. There were talks of Berkman being traded to Texas, but the deal being killed when Berkman told the team he wouldn't entertain the possibility of resigning with St. Louis when he becomes a FA.

And then, they started to win. And Atlanta started to lose.

The last week of the season was an incredible ride. Three games out with five left...and they pull it off.

They have to play the team with the best record in the NL, the defending champion Phillies...and they pull it off.

Then, they have to play their nemesis, the Milwaukee Brewers...a team that frustrated the Cards all season...and they pull it off.

And then...with the Cards down to their final strike not once, but twice in Game 6...they pull it off.

This World Series win was so much more satisfying than the 2006 win. That team shouldn't have won it all, but this team REALLY shouldn't have won it all. Just freaking unreal.

The best team doesn't always win. The Cards have won it twice now recently when they weren't, but they have also not won it a couple of times when they might have been the best team.

Un-freaking-believable! What a great ride the Cardinals gave us these last two months! They were so much fun to watch play.

:goodposting: Amazing run. I used to be an incredibly hardcore baseball fan until the '94 strike. This year, as a result of the Cards at the end of the year, I sat down to watch my first full baseball game on TV in a long, long time. I haven't missed a game since and had my love for baseball fully rekindled. Truly epic, historic, and enjoyable to watch.

:goodposting:Hats off to the Rangers and their fans for having a class organization. It's nice to play a team for the title that's not only been there before, but act like it.I do have to feel bad for Rangers fans, though. Being down to one strike away from your first World Series not once, but twice has to be soul crushing.

What a super sweet championship - the "moments of truth" in this series were awesome - so many plays, pitches and decisions to reflect on that could have gone a number of ways to a different outcome. Really makes you enjoy the game of baseball.

As a Cardinal fan a tip of the cap to...

Prince Fielder for hitting a homer of off CJ Wilson in Arizona

The Philles for refusing to mail in the end of the season and take out the Braves

Ranger players like Holland and Napoli - Napoli especially

I've been working in the Dallas area for the last 5 months and it was interesting to watch and listen to the radio and fans start to talk more intently on baseball vs the Cowboys....even this Friday's Cowboy segments had no life. While sitting in bars and restaurants watching the games you could start to see a fan base gain some sophistication on the game of baseball. While I rooted for the Cardinals they were great fans with lots of class - this one will hurt but I hope they can get back to the top again - it's a lot more fun in Dallas when it's not Cowboys 24x7. The Mavs and now the Rangers have helped get them there.

Now the hard part comes - hopefully they get a happy Puljos to quickly decide to come back After a nice 4 game check for the postseason and paraphernalia sales we can up the offer a few years and millions more. This team with Wainwright back and a confident Freese at third - Rafael Furcal (who really redeemed himself last night) - and of course Puljos - could certainly take the Central again. Maybe the Red Sox or some AL team will take Holliday of our hands for some prospects we can bring up slowly to fit in.

You ranger fans are really decent dudes, and I'm truly sorry for your loss. I would say I can't imagine losing like that but having lived through 2004 as a Yankee fan, I can relate from the fan perspective. It sucks, but you guy are obviously an organization going in the right direction. I also feel for Ron Wash, who's easy to make fun of, but also easy to root for. To get that close, ugh, I just hope he gets to stay in Texas. If Nellie Cruz doesn't prance around in RF, well, you know the rest.

And Cards fans, congrats, what more can be said. Its a Buster Douglas-Olympic hockey level upset to have gone from August 1-October 28 on this run. I might be biased in putting the NY football Giants 07 run ahead of it, winning 4 playoff games on the road, including your heavily favorite division rival Cowboys, Favre at Lambeau in -10 degree weather and an undefeated Patriot team, but this has to be damn close. I mean, to get in the playoffs was a miracle based on thats last weekend, and beating Halladay 1-0 in Philly to complete one of the bigger upsets in Philly(after rallying against Cliff Lee down 4-0), and getting past a team of destiny feeling Brew Crew and then this Ranger team, which is probably mano a mano better than the Cards. A suspect bullpen a bunch of nobodies.

I'm watching a DVR of the last out last night and I have chills. I haven't been this psyched for a team I have no vested interest in to win since Duke beat UNLV in 1991, I have Goose bumps just watching it. What a special bunch, and thanks to both teams for one of the more memorable World Series ever. Such amazing stories here, Pujols in the walk year, Freese the hometown Hero, Larussa the cagey veteran, Carpenter with brass balls. Wow. Sick Sick win boys.

Now sign Pujols TOMORROW. This puts enough money in the coffers to end any debate. He belongs in the Lou.

I hate to say it, but, this kind of loss is like the march to adulthood as a fanbase. The Rangers lost playoff rounds and even lost a world series, but god, this is the kind of gut searing that builds a mythology and character to a fanbase. They will win and when they do, this loss will only make it all the sweeter.

I've been love hate with Neftali, as I drafted him as a rookie on my fantasy team but I never quite liked him and have been waiting for the other shoe to drop with a play like Game 6. But that said, I hope he gets to be a part of delivering some redemption in Texas. I really don't blame him as much for Game 6 as I do Cruz, and I 100 percent think he should have pitched that 10th inning last night, and we might not be having this conversation tonight. Ditto Ron Wash. In an age of increasingly creeping robotism in all of sports, Ron Washington lets it all hang out and its a good thing!

Have to say game 7 was a sleepfest, but game 6 was one of the most exciting WS games in a long long time. Congrats Card. It was nice to see some high ratings for the series too, despite none of the east coast or west coast teams.

Cards' Game 7 win most-watched since Red Sox in '04Comments6By Michael McCarthy, USA TODAYUpdated 43m agoCAPTIONBy Matt Slocum, APFox's telecast of Game 7 of the 2011 World Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers averaged a 14.7 TV rating and 25.4 million viewers. That makes it the highest-rated, most watched baseball game since the Boston Red Sox erased their 86-year championship drought in 2004, according to Major League Baseball.
