So Heyman is saying Cabrera moves to DH. That pretty much sucks. Its proven that players hit worse as a DH than as a full time player in general. Plus, take a look at the NL first basemen. Its dreadful.
Did Cabrera agree to that?At least he can get in some drinking while on the bench
Correction: Heyman reported Fielder would play 1B. I'm speculating that the Tigers arent going to try and stick Cabrera back at 3B. Though I guess if they're willing to commit 9 years to Fielder that they might be crazy enough to try.

Woah. Miggy at 3B would be huge value fantasty-wise.

3B eligible Miggy is a no doubt number 1 pick overall.

Ridiculously bad contract for Fielder. Fat guys go downhill fast, they are going to be regretting this after year 3 and will be handcuffed for the duration. Yikes.

Don't know where else to post this, so here it goes

Buddy of mine is interviewing with the Dodgers as I type this.

He played in the White Sox farm system, until he blew his arm out several years ago.....now he's interviewing to be the BP coach for the Dodgers.

The past 5 years or so he's been coaching a couple different teams, including a small college and an independent pro team

Out of the blue(he doesn't know how they got his name) he gets a call from the Dodgers. They've flown him out, put him up in a suite, and introduced him to the brass.

I'm wishing him all the luck in the world......he just might get his dream of making it to the Bigs.

First question I asked was about Cub tickets.

That is huge. The bigs would be amazing but you got to think at the very least a minor-league gig somwehere is attainable if that falls through. Lot of reasons to be happy.

Was supposed to get an answer today, but was told they would like for him to come to spring training to further analyze his abilities. I guess when you throw BP they also want you to catch some of the time too. They also told him if he doesn't end up with the BP job, they would really like to keep him in the organization in some capacity. So, everything is still up in the air. Will keep you all posted.

Sweet sounds like he's in, in some capacity. Someone must think highly of him, has he found out how they got his name and number?

No, but it's assumed that a couple of his former players, who are now in their system, passed his name along.

Right-hander Chad Qualls signed a one-year, $1.15 million contract with the Phillies, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. The contract includes performance and awards bonuses.

Edwin Jackson goes for 11M? Yeesh.
He made $8.75 last year and produced 3.1 WAR. $11M seems about market price, especially without a discount for a long-term deal.
Yeah, but his WAR has been all over the place and his comps are ham and eggers. Low risk to WAS is the best part of the deal, but 11M seems like about 6M too much to me.
You think Edwin Jackson is worth the same as Bruce Chen? 5M is about the cost of 1 marginal win. For 11M the Nationals got a pitchers thats averaged 3.7 wins per ofr the last 3 years and about 2.8 wins per 200 IP in his career. 11M is a bargain.

Jeremy Guthrie to Colorado for Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom. I don't understand this one from the Rockies' perspective. Guthrie is a fly ball pitcher who has given up 86 HRs over the past three years. He's also a free agent after the season. The trade does point out the perceived value of a innings eater like Guthrie.

Hammel couldn't get anybody out last year, his slide really started late 2010, and Lindstrom is easily replaceable. Guthrie is a much better bet for quality Mid-rotation production. I'm not all that concerned about the move to Coors coming from the AL East.

Anibal Sanchez beats the Marlins in Arbitration. So where does he get traded this summer?

Anibal Sanchez beats Miami Marlins in arbitration, gets $8 million contractby Joe CapozziStarting pitcher Anibal Sanchez may or may not be entering his final season with the Marlins. One thing for certain, he’ll get paid nicely this year.Sanchez beat the Marlins in arbitration, winning an $8 million contract instead of the $6.9 million deal offered by the Marlins.Next up: Emilio Bonifacio, who pleads his case to the arbitration panel on Tuesday. Boni wants $2.2 million while the Marlins have offered $1.95 million.Sanchez becomes a free agent after the season, and so far the Marlins have no plans to entertain a multi-year deal for him.“We’re going to let him go through the season,” team president David Samson said last week. “He’s happy, healthy and ready.”With Anibal’s contract, the Marlins have 15 players under a total of $93,985,000 in contracts for 2012.

Rockies rotation is a mess right nowGuthrieChacinPomeranzAlex WhiteTyler ChatwoodJamie Moyer ffs
Chatwood and White likely won't be anywhere near the rotation at the beginning of the year, though Chatwood might get a look in the pen. My guess for the opening rotation would be:ChacinGuthrieNicasio (already throwing 100%)OutmanPomeranzWith White, Chatwood, Friedrich and Rogers developing, and Jorge De La Rosa arriving back in July

Arent Guthrie's #s pretty damn good outside of his starts vs Boston & NY?

that's a whole lot of #### getting thrown against a wall and seeing what's gonna stick.Outside of Guthrie and Chacin, Chatwood is the only guy with > 75 ip's in the majors. g'lllllllluck with all that.

That's what happens when you trade away your Ace for three minor league pitching prospects and lose your number two starter for a year to TJ surgery. It's also why it made sense to go out and get a steady innings eater like Guthrie. Still, it's not like there isn't talent there and they only need two of that group to step up to field a decent rotation. In 71 innings last year Nicasio fielded a 3.65 FIP, and has TOR stuff. Moscoso, who I inadvertently left off the list had 128 innings with a 4.23 FIP - Outman 58 innings at 3.90. In his extremely limited action Pomeranz had a 2.59 FIP. all of those are the same or better than Chacin's 4.23 last year.

Another sign that baseball is just around the corner

Free-agent righthander Rich Harden will miss the entire 2012 season after having shoulder surgery last week, MLB Network’s Peter Gammons reports. The procedure repaired a torn capsule in his shoulder and is similar to the surgery that has sidelined New York Mets ace Johan Santana since September of 2010. Harden told Gammons that he opted to have the operation after five years of “always being hurt.”Rich Harden went 4-4 for the A's in 2011. (AP Photo)Harden told the San Francisco Chronicle that he suffered the injury in April of 2007 and has pitched in pain since then. He blames the injury for a drop in velocity and other physical problems."If you look at those injuries, that's definitely where they came from," Harden told the newspaper. "Yes, I've been injured a lot, but nobody really knew what I'd been dealing with for five years. Every day, just to play catch, I had to re-train my body to throw. I was pushing the ball. I'd start the game throwing 86-87 mph and that was max effort."However, Harden is determined to return and recapture his pre-injury form. "There's no reason, if I work hard, I can't get back to where I was before," Harden said.

Why wait to almost spring training to opt for surgery? You would think he would have wanted to get this out of the way and get a quicker start to rehab by going under the knife at the end of last year.

Rumor has it that the Yankees could be sending AJ Burnett and a bunch of money to Pittsburgh to be rid of him.
Olney says they're asking for Garrett Jones in return. It's hard to believe the Yankees of all teams don't have a better left handed DH option than Jones or Russell Branyan
