***Official 2013/2014 NHL Regular Season Thread*** (3 Viewers)

After watching last night's Leafs/Sharks game and seeing how Toronto was scored with a NHL season high in hits, I have zero faith in that stat.
I absolutely believe it. If a team racks up a ton of hits in a game it's because they never had the puck. Usually the team with the most hits loses -Right now San Jose is last in the league in hits. Last season Chicago was last.
The bolded I understand. But 56 hits? The guy tabulating hits obviously was looking for something to do. No way Toronto had that many hits, especially having watched how that game played out.
Yeah, I watched the game too, the Leafs literally almost never had the puck. It's doesn't have to be a full on board rattling hit to count, they count lots of little bumps. I don't think the Leafs are a hard hitting team, but I think they're constantly trying to get the puck from the other team (if you follow advanced stats, they're the 2nd worst possession team in the NHL - they're also 2nd in the NHL in hits) and they just have way more opportunity to deliver the small hits.

I'm going to start to sound like a broken record re: Leafs crappiness, Carlyle's stupidity and Gardiner's awesomeness, but this stat from last night is just another indication of how stupid it is when he ends up the one in the doghouse/healthy scratched and how angry I'll be when they trade him away for "grit" or "tenacity"

@draglikepull 20h
With Gardiner on the ice the shot attempts were 20-17 for Toronto. With Gardiner on the bench they were 54-15 for San Jose. Wow.

After two ticky-tack calls leading to a 5 on 3 and then a non-call on a semi-covered puck, I can turn this garbage off.

Red Wings' second goal by Franzen was a heck of a shot though.

Boys, i know this is gauche, but I need your help. I've been fluking my way through a losers pool (sat night games) where all you have to do is pick a losing team. The pool is down from 175 to 6 guys, all with one pick left. Winner takes home over 2k on a peanuts buy-in. Was just ####### around for the sake of my FIL but i am remarkably still in it.

I need a pick for this sat. Leaning Florida but I'm sure everyone else is too. The Flames toasted like 25 teams last week so looking for something outside the box.

TIA
Sabres @ Montrealor

Islanders @ Los Angeles
Thanks rud.

Missed a helluva third period JB! :excited: The Couturier/Read/Downie line has been their best line for a while now. Glad to see Coots finally getting to play with some other skilled players and not some third line plugs.

Went and saw the London Knights/Soo Greyhounds tonight...Teddy Bear toss night....that was cool. Just short of 10,000 bears tossed on the ice.

Darnel Nurse (EDM first rounder) looks like the real deal. He is tall and skates like the wind and has a big shot. He will need to fill out, as he is a bean pole.

As for the Knights, Zhadorev looks slow all evening. \there is also a solid reason Domi didn't get an invite to the Jr camp. PASS THE FKIN PUCK. When he scores, it is a highlight reel goal, but he doesn't pass, and turns the puck over way too much. Reminds me sooo much of Khadri at this age. Horvat looks so good also. Stolarz was very solid, and should be the starter for the USA Jrs.

Hard to believe Phlyers Phans are excited about beating the Wings without Z and Datysuk. What, are you the Capitals now?
Well it's not division banner raising excited but considering we can't score 6 goals against the little sisters of the poor, scoring 6 is like finding a box of Canolis in your stocking on Xmas morning. :excited: eta: early morning tweet from MacKenzie:

I can tell you there are some developments in the works that will ensure TSN's hockey coverage remains first rate for a long, long time.

Watched stuff on the DVR and had the game on behind it. Saw the score change and quickly rewound.

 :ptts:

But for some strange reason he's not good enough for the Canada Jr. squad. Really surprising that he was left off.

Pretty disappointing they pissed away a two goal lead in the 3rd even without Zetterberg and Datysuk.

With half of their games at home with that scorekeeper, this is no surprise

Boychuk is in trouble. Down for 10 minutes... didn't move. Went off strapped to a stretcher. :(
Someone on Twitter who appears to be a relative of some sort is saying wrenched back, went into spasms, taken for precautionary X-rays.

It didn't look good, but fingers crossed that's all it is.

That came as a surprise to me too when I heard it.

Really excited to see if Horvat can crack the Canucks lineup next year. He put up 24 pts in 13 games in November. It seems his offensive game is starting to really blossom. Every time I see his toe drag move I miss Schneids just a little bit less.

The Islanders are tied with Florida for the 2nd worst team in the league. That 1st round pick they gave up in the Vanek trade is looking pretty valuable. They have a choice to keep it in 2014, but if they do that means the Sabres get their pick in 2015 when McDavid will be available. :excited:

Tough to see Vanek sticking around with how poorly things are going. Will they look to deal him at the deadline to get some value back from that deal?

So the Pens beat yet another top West team last night. Ho hum, ho hum.....
Pfft. Let me know when you get above .500 facing the Central.

4: Number of Eastern conference teams with a better than .500 win % against the Western conference

(Bruins, Lightning, Penguins, Mapleleafs)

12: Number of Western conference teams with a better than .500 win % against the Eastern conference

(everyone except Oilers and Preds)

Something that Hawks aren't even above right now? :bag:

That's why making that option was key. No way this Isles team ####s the bed next year too IMO. I like Capuano but this is a classic scenario where a coaching change will do a world of improvement.

Wild awful in Columbus tonight. Just brutal. Jackets kicked their asses in every facet.

Chance of a Parise and Stoner 2 on 1 is about 1000:1 and it happened twice tonight. About their only good two scoring chances too. So weird.

It's tough to see any positives in the Minnesota Devils. Boring team in a wide open conference.
lol, sup Burt

Hope Thornton and the NHL have good lawyers.

Actually, I could give a ####. I hope Thornton ends up in prison and Orpik owns the NHL.

Ridiculous.

btw... the cheap shot by Orpik the Bruins homers are alluding to from earlier in the game sure looked clean (but very hard) to my uneducated eye.

How many games suspension does everyone think for that low life piece of garbage thornton. And before anyone says anything, neal's move was nothing to write home about. He should probably get a game or so.

2-5 for Neal

10 for Thornton. I would like to see a 25+ game suspension though, but I doubt the NHL wheel of justice hits anything north of 10.

A game or so? Well if Shanaban follows his own policies, Neal should get quite a few more than a game or so with his past. But it is Shanahan, so no suspension likely.

Kind of impossible to predict suspension length when Shanahan clearly shows no desire to rule with any semblance of consistency. I could see Thornton getting anywhere from 5 games to a season ban depending on what side of the bed Shanahan wakes up on tomorrow morning.

The Orpik hit early in the game that knocked L Erikson out shoulda been a penalty, just my opinion. Neal's shot on Marchand was cheap too. But that crap with Thornton, it's gotta be a really serious suspension.

Is there anybody here who can defend him? Slew foots a player who's engaged with somebody else after the play. Punches him. Then punches him and follows through with his elbow.

spot on couldn't agree more. And what really sucks is, pens don't play boston again regular season. Was hoping to have a chance to see engelland knock Thornton's teeth out.

 Who could possibly defend him?!
