The only thing that would make this ok is if cally comes back next year. Oof, this hurts
Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. You just traded your captain and draft pick for St. Louis? They couldn't have been close on a deal, then.

Whoa.
Captain traded for Captain

They traded a solid player for an elite (older) player, imo.

I love Callahan's game because he's 100% effort and plays harder than just about anyone, but he doesn't have Marty's skill.
Yeah, just surprised. St. Louis played in the ECAC when I was going to school at an ECAC school. Sort of always followed his career. The TB-Calgary series was when I thought LeCavalier would be the best goal-scorer in hockey.

Regardless, I'm not as up as you guys. Big trade.

where did you go?

I went to school with Marty at UVM. He was a year behind me but had some friends in common.

If Yzerman can now flip Callahan this could be a huge haul for him
Lightning aren't exactly in rebuilding mode. Not sure why he would want to flip him.

Callahan could be huge in a playoff run for them.
Doesn't have to be prospects, they should be able to get roster players for him who they can re-sign or are already on long term deals.
true, but players on good deals that aren't expiring for a rental that publically wants a huge deal next season are hard to come by.
That's true, but perhaps there's a team out there that has the cap space and thinks they have a good shot of re-signing that would be willing to make that kind of trade.

Colgate. That's kind of cool. He would have been a year or so behind me, too.

Don't love giving up the 2015 1st but I think Acer is being a bit too sentimental on Callahan. His skills have eroded, doesn't sniff much PP time anymore, he gets hurt pretty frequently, and his contract demands were insane. You can't pay up for intangibles in a cap league. Hell, I'd rather give away every 1st for 6 years than be saddled with him for 6 years at $6MM and with a NMC, which is what he demanded. I'm pissed enough at Sather for going that high in years/$ in the first place.

I'd be really surprised if he sniffs anything near that on the open market from a contending team. I think that's why the price paid for MSL was so high, because Callahan had little value to the rest of the league once everyone knew what he was looking for in free agency. The only name ever connected in a deal, prior to this one, was Chris Stewart, which should tell you something. He'll need to take a more modest offer from a stronger organization, or chase money and go home to Buffalo and serve as a mentor to all they're building up there.

Thought this was an interesting stat/reference point on Callahan that I picked up elsewhere. He ranks 95th in pts/game over last 3 years combined. In between Wayne Simmonds ($3.975M/yr) & Michael Ryder ($3.5M/yr)

Do you think they could have gotten a younger player for two first round picks. The goal is to get to the Stanley Cup and the eastern conf finals is not a crazy thought if Henrik is on.

So why not just offer a 2014 and 2015 first rounder for a younger offensive talent (dont ask me for names)

Im OK with losing Cally since I agree with everything you said, BUT, two possible firsts for a 38 year old doesnt make sense to me. I know he is always in the top 5 in scoring, but at some point he wont be and age will catch up. Lets hope they win the cup (still think they need another scorer) and the picks are late picks

Mckenzie: Hearing EDM's Ales Hemsky is going to OTT for picks. No official confirmation or details just yet.

I just said to a buddy that I hated having the condition be the conference finals, and not the SCF, so I agree with you. Huge difference there. You can luck into a conf finals appearance.

I assume if they thought they could get a premium younger offensive talent for two 1sts, they would have done so

Hemsky to Ottawa for a 2014 5th rd pick and a 2015 3rd round pick. So, they replace the picks given up in the Fasth deal.

I'm surprised the return wasn't higher.

big cap hit, rental, decreased offense. seems about right to me.
Senators probably wish he wouldn't have scored 2 goals on them last night.

Also reported the Oilers are eating half his salary.

Even worse deal then, in my opinion. Dreger said at least 6 teams had interest in Hemsky, so I'm surprised they couldn't get a prospect for him or maybe a 2nd round pick.

From Stevie Y:

""We'd like to thank Marty for everything he has done on and off the ice during his outstanding 13-year career in Tampa Bay. He has been one of the greatest players in the organization's history but in the end we honored his request today. We wish him and his family the best of luck as he continues his career in New York."

Well he couldn't have made that any clearer.

Hearing prospect Hudson Fasching (U of Minnesota) is likely on way to BUF as part of Brayden McNabb trade with BUF. Awaiting confirmation.

hope the return on McNabb is more than that.
Why is Buffalo trading him anyway? Need forwards more than D?
I don't know.

I really liked McNabb.

EDIT: I guess Deslauriers is the other prospect. This sounds no bueno to me but I guess they must really like these two guys.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 1m

Pending trade call, sounds like BUF sends Brayden McNabb and two 2nd round picks to LA for two prospects - one of them Hudson Fasching.
McNabb and two 2nd round picks? This is not sounding great.

um, I'd be pretty happy with that deal. Fasching is as pro-ready as you'll see out of a college kid in his first year and he is going to be a player in the NHL.
I guess I'm underrating him. Saw him listed 4th on the Kings RW prospect chart at HF:

I'm a big McNabb fan. Not sure why he hasn't played more with the big club.

I know Fasching is a good player with power forward potential, but haven't had a chance to watch any of him in Minnesota.

well, I didn't know there were two 2nd rounders as well, but I still like it for Buffalo...Fasching will be the star out of this deal. he will be making an impact by the time he is 21. should be a really good power forward that can skate and has great hands. I think he stays one more year before leaving, but if not he may be up even sooner. he won't spend long in the AHL. great prospect.

some scouting reports on Fasching. too nice? not a great sign.

Fasching, Hudson – RW – US NTDP Under-18 Team – 6’2, 214
Hudson has seen his stock plummet since this time last year, and rightly so. He teases with great size and great flashes of offensive talent, but his hockey sense is questionable and infrequently gives his best effort. When he’s on his game he moves well for his size, controls the puck well, shows good hands along the boards, and plays an intelligent, physical defensive game. More often than not, he has a hard time handling the puck and tries to force plays, leading to frustration and the rest of his game falling apart. It’s easy to tell what kind of game Fasching will have based on his first shift. Part of his issues this year seemed to draw from puck luck as well, as he went stretches where he was ridiculously snake bitten with frequent goalposts and near misses. He also dealt with a concussion at the beginning of the season, and it’s possible that the lingering effects of that were also a factor. Such negatives do have a way of snowballing. Fasching will surely be drafted and will be looking at next year as a clean slate, which could be just the thing he needs to get his game back together.
Quotable: “Some games he seems to have it all together, other games he’s not a factor. Physically he has all the tools. I just don’t see him putting it all together.

I have coached some players in the past who were just too nice. It’s
difficult to make a nice kid be something he’s not comfortable being. I see some of that in Hudson.” – Mark Edwards

meh, plus they look old. watch him in the NCAA tourney this year, he is a stud. really stands out on a good deep Gopher team at 18.

I guess the Pens are out of the Kesler sweepstakes?
reports earlier were that Canucks ownership wanted to keep him and hope to make a run for the playoffs to make some extra loot. then they would ship him out in the summer still.

I guess teams are still trying to pry him away though.

I'm not a Gopher fan. those reports are all before he went to Minnesota. they're old. this guy was drafted in the 4th round and just went in a package with a high prospect and two 2nds. you don't think things change? particularly with a power forward type who was an adolescent?

Bruins are expected to try to find a left-shot defenseman (or two), but not a big name ... other than the fact they supposedly are looking at perennial Norris favorite Andrej Meszaros.

There were some rumblings last night when Eriksson got scratched, but supposedly it was a maintenance thing and he's not going anywhere.
