Vikings shooting themselves in the foot. :wall:

Was a winnable game before the fumble, penalties on 3rd down extending Lions drive then again failure on offense to get a 1st down.

Still a slim chance I suppose, game is not yet over.

If the Vikings ever do win the Super Bowl I imagine some of you will still find things to complain about.
So it was winnable until they started to play like crap?

I just can't do this anymore. I can't watch this team. Time to be a full time Broncos fan (like I was in the Elway days).

I feel bad for Peterson. The Vikings seem to be pulling a Kevin Garnett on him. A world class talent surrounded by a mediocrity.

 Andy has always been a pessimist about the Vikings but I'm starting to see his point. Ponder has to go. They were lucky to even be in this game.

Good bye Mr Bandwagon
I've been with them a long time. That's not the right term for me.Think of me more like the friend that used to date the girl you're with. I'm warning you that she might be promising you all sorts of things in the bedroom and other assorted places but she's just a tease that won't put out when it comes to it.

Real love is accepting things for what they are, warts and all.

Not just looking for a one night stand.

Mistakes and Turnovers Cost Vikings In 34-24 Loss to LionsPosted 53 minutes ago

DETROIT (AP) - Reggie Bush gave the Detroit Lions exactly what they were looking for when they signed him as a free agent in the offseason.

Bush turned a short pass into a 77-yard touchdown in the third quarter and finished with 191 yards of offense to help Detroit pull away to beat the Minnesota Vikings 34-24 Sunday.

The Lions overcame a slew of miscues on offense, defense and special teams.

The Vikings also made their share of mistakes, especially Christian Ponder, who threw three interceptions and lost a fumble.

Adrian Peterson ran for a 78-yard TD on his first carry and scored on a 4-yard run to give Minnesota a 14-6 lead in the second. He finished with 93 yards rushing on 18 attempts.

At least on opening day, Bush was the speedy running back the Lions haven't had since Jahvid Best had his career ended by concussions. Detroit released him this year because he hasn't been able to play since 2011.

Fans at Ford Field have already become big fans of Bush, chanting ``Reg-gie! Reg-gie!'' much like crowds at the Silverdome used to shout ``Bar-ry! Bar-ry!'' for Hall of Fame running back Barry Sanders.

The Lions made adding the former Miami and New Orleans running back a priority and he showed why right away. He ran 21 times for 90 yards and caught four passes for 101 yards and a score, proving the eight-year veteran still has plenty of speed.

Joique Bell ran for two TDs, including a go-ahead score that gave the Lions their first lead early in the third quarter.

Matthew Stafford was 28 of 43 for 357 yards with two TDs, including a 1-yard lob to rookie tight end Joseph Fauria with 6:47 left that sealed the win. Calvin Johnson was held to four catches for 37 yards and had a TD negated by review because he appeared to lose control of the football in the end zone.

Ponder was 18 of 28 for 236 yards with a 4-yard TD pass to Peterson that got Minnesota within three late in the third quarter. Jerome Simpson had seven receptions and 140 yards receiving for the Vikings.

The Lions finished strong, outscoring the Vikings 28-10 after an awful start.

Detroit botched a field-goal attempt on the opening drive when rookie holder Sam Martin dropped a perfect snap.

One snap later, Peterson ran through a hole, shifted his shoulders to the left - prompting rookie defensive back Darius Slay to do a face plant into the turf - juked to the right and outraced the rest of the defense on the fourth-longest run of his career.

After choosing to kick on a fourth-and-1, Detroit coach Jim Schwartz went for it with the same down and distance on their next drive only to have Bell's fourth-down run negated by Brandon Pettigrew's holding penalty, forcing him to settle for another field goal.

The Lions looked as if they were going to take their first lead two snaps later when linebacker DeAndre Levy returned an interception for a TD, but Ndamukong Suh was called for an illegal low block against center John Sullivan, who was well behind the play, and Stafford threw an interception on the next play.

Minnesota took advantage on the ensuing drive, going ahead 14-6 on Peterson's short burst after running through Slay's right arm.

Martin then shanked a punt - adding a miscue to another phase of the game for Detroit - and Lions defensive back Bill Bentley dropped what would've likely have been an interception for a score.

Pettigrew fumbled on another drive in the second quarter before Ponder gave the ball back with another interception. The Lions made the most of the opportunity, thanks to a rule that went their way.

Bell leaped over a pile and extended his arms with the football that was jarred loose by the Vikings, but video review showed the ball got to the goal line. Bell's spinning, 1-yard run - one play after Bush's TD was overturned by review - in the third quarter gave the Lions their first lead and they rolled to a relatively easy win.

With fans like these don't really need enemies. Certainly not trying to talk you out of anything. There's the door.
Well, let's hear your ideas, Superfan.
As a veteran I do not believe in just quitting when things get difficult.

Loyalty is important to me.

Predicting failure is not really helpful. That attitude is not something I consider supportive of a team. As a veteran I understand what being part of a team is about.

I'm a purple bleeder but even us :homer: have to take off the Beer goggles once and a while and see the stench that is out there..

I didn't think it was possible, but the defense is even worse then last year.

Musgrave SUCKS as a Offensive coordinator.. Who the hell calls a Ponder roll to his left on 3rd and one when you have AP.. someone who should NEVER have the Offensive coordinator next to his name is who.

And I'm tired of the Viking projects at QB.. First it was Tarvaris Jackson and how we all just needed to be patient as he was going to be a star..

Now it's "Ponder is going to be a star, give him a chance".

Meanwhile we are wasting away the talents of AP as he is forced to face 8 men fronts and the defense laughing at Ponder saying "Try to beat us sucker, because AP isn't going to".

I'll continue to watch each game and cheer for the Vikings while wearing my jersey.. But my expectations now are to be happy with 5 wins, when my hope had been the defense and Ponder would be good enough to get us to 9 wins.. :kicksrock:

No wonder AE got so pissed off with you. No sympathy here. Gotta agree with Biabreakalbe on this. If you want to be a Broncos fan, go be a Broncos fan.

We don't agree about a lot of things Snogger but I do appreciate your loyalty to the team you love.

You cannot win every game. The Lions are a very good team. In the end it is just a game.

There are some things I live by outside the game of football that do carry over to how I look at the game. Because those are things I live by.

I hear ya. I'll never quit on them but damn. Then you think about how after this year we have to wait two whole years before they get back into an NFL stadium. Week one feels like a kick in the nads.

The Lions do have a very good defensive line. They deserve some credit.

This was an important game to win because winning next week in Soldier Field will be even more difficult. Very hard to start the season 0-2 in the division.

Hopefully they can get it together.

Despite all of the mistakes the Vikings were still in the game until that fumble and then the penalties giving them 1st downs instead of getting off the field on 3rd down.

Relax. Last year was great for us. Ponder killed us today, but your hyperbole makes you sound like a Browns fan.

Browns fans at least stick by their team despite not enjoying near the success that the Vikings have given their fans over the years. I have a lot of respect for Browns fans, who admittedly are more negative than any of us.

When this team finishes with less than 5 wins you guys will be able to hold your heads high and and say "Yep, and I was with them the whole time. Look at meeeeee!"

Some people get off on being martyrs I guess.

Fair point. I just picked a random "losing" team. I'll switch my reference to the Eagles.

And what does it get them?
It's a football game. We get nothing whether they win or lose. I root for the Vikings because that's what random life events led me to do when I was young (my family was from Minnesota). It's then fun and more fulfilling to follow the same team. But at the end of the day, no way a simple loss is going to be a big deal or should it be.

But you're rants and threats to change teams after one game where we played a decent team at their home stadium suggests you may not grasp this.

Yeah Woz. Keep telling yourself it's just one game.

I'm glad it's still fun for you. After 41 years it no longer is for me.

I'm 30. I still vividly remember experiencing the Gary Anderson miss in 1998, the Favre INT a few years back, and living through the Mike Tice disaster years.

That said, we're coming off a season where we more than overachieved and we got to root for one of the best and most likable players ever in Peterson have a season for the record books. There are no more ridiculously unlikeable guys on the team, their trying with the new stadium, and our drafts have been fine.

So, I am supposed to get all worked this year when we lose our first game on the road to a legit team in a game we had a chance to win? Sure, Ponder sucked and it was disappointing to see him not appear to have improved, but no way this should bother a rational fan.

I don't see how it CAN'T bother a rational fan. 15 more weeks of Ponder or Cassel? Oof.
Ponder sucked last year too.

I agree it would be really nice to have a better QB. But to suggest it's enough to consider changing favorite teams is ludicrous. I've made it through Tarvaris Jackson, McaNabb's evil twin, Brad Johnson round 2, etc. I can handle a mediocre QB on this team.

I'd take a mediocre one over Ponder at this point.

:goodposting: where is a Brad Johnson when we need one?Oh and who here still thinks not trying to get Alex Smith was the right move?...anyone ... :kicksrock:

I was worried Stafford would tear them apart and except for some flukey td callbacks I was pretty correct. Not sure how they are going to stop anyone without a pass rush.

I think it was the turnovers that killed them. They had 4 (or 5?), and Ponder was responsible for 4 himself. Hard to win a game when you give up the ball 4 times.

I credit a very good Lions DF, and while our DF didn't look great, I put quite a bit of that on that the Lions will probably be a top 5 offense this year. Our OLine looked bad as well, but again, Lions DLine is very good also. I think the Lions might be better than I gave them credit for, if they can be better disciplined (lots of dumb penalties). So I'll wait to see how it looks in Chicago before I spell doom/gloom for the season.

Except for the long run, AP was held to like 20 yards the rest of the game. That is bad play calling, maybe you need to setup the run with the pass, or spread out the DF and run outta a more spread look. Seems like a lack of imagination from Musgrave (surprise surprise, eh?) You know what - I'd much rather have a 3-13 season and a nice early QB draft pick than an average 7-9/8-8 season where Ponder does just enough to keep his job. (Still rooting for him to do well cause I want the Vikings to win, but about to give up on him progressing any further than what we are seeing.)

At least the Vikings aren't the only team stumbling out of the starting gate. (Watching the Giants and Cowboys game)

I'm not predicting anything after week 1, but it wouldn't surprise me if the Packers have a tough go of it this season as their defense doesn't look great and they seem thin at OL with Bulaga lost. They are going to have their hands full with DLs in the divisional play.

I'm far from a Ponder supporter, but I was actually encouraged with some of the things I saw from him yesterday and think he was not among the top 3 reasons we lost (unless you want to blame the play-calling on his limitations).

We lost this game because both of our lines got man-handled all game..and I can't decide which played worse. The O-Line could't run or pass block...AP got hit behind the line 1/2 the time and Ponder had little time. The D-Line got no pressure on the QB, failed to recognize the screen time and time again, and continually allowed holes you could drive a car through.

Things I don't blame on Ponder

- basic offensive gameplan

- strange calls and roll-outs to the left

- AP/OLine getting 15 rushing yards over 17 carries after the first one

- the INT off Simpson's hands (not a good throw, but should have been caught)

- The 2nd INT was another stupid left roll out and it looked like he was at least trying to throw it away...Suh made a great play.

- Not sure about the fumble...fluke things like that happen to every QB, especially early in the season.

He got very lucky on the one dropped INT, the long ball to Simpson was 95% Simpson, and he had several off throws....but for the most part he was pretty accurate that allowed some YAC and actually had some zip on the ball. I'm not saying he's the answer at QB...but he looked better than last year to me, and last year was good enough to get to the playoffs (despite his play, not because of it).

Side note - I was also pretty impressed with the officiating of this game. The only call I can remember disagreeing with was the roughing the passer call where Stafford was hit from one side and into a player with his hands up who didn't even look like he would have hit him otherwise.

Bring on Bethel-Thompson!
I am with you. MBT will probably make a ton of rookie mistakes but I sure like his arm.
Much as I don't put that game on Ponder, I would 100% be on board with this! He'd make some mistakes and he seems to get a lot of balls tipped at the line...but it sure would be fun to see him sligin' the ball opening up things for AP.
