My son will be a freshman in HS this fall and he's had a growth spurt and grew out of his junior clubs. He's still pretty much a beginner (probably not likely to make the HS golf team) and I'm looking to get him an adult set of clubs.

Any recommendations on what/where to buy? Looking to spend no more than $400 on a full set.

I see Callaway Strata sets on Amazon for $200, but I'm guessing there are better alternatives out there.

I'm not sure what shaft he needs, club range, or L or R handed, but I have been very pleased with the Callaway X Hot irons . I'm sure you can shop around and find them touch less, but they are averaging in that $350 - $400 range.

Went from a set of Taylormade OS Rac, and it isn't even close how much more distance and forgiving the Callaway irons are.

What's consensus around here....looking for some anecdotal information...

Are you playing more or less golf this year or the same as always?

What about other golfers you know?

If you are playing less, why? time, money, access?

Just curious.

same maybe a tad less. Just a late spring and kids

I haven't played any yet this year - combination of busy spring with kids, lots of cold/rain, and mainly finishing rehab from rotator cuff surgery over the winter. Surgeon gave me the OK to try swinging a club, but I'm still nervous about the first time I take a divot.

I think I'm going to hit the range on the way home today, though.

God less living in a place where it's always warm. Been playing about 1/week for the last two years(never really played before then) with some 72 hole weekends mixed in when friends come out for a golf trip.

A bit more but I really dialed it back the previous 5 years due to very young kids. My basic rule is that I will play on the weekend only if the kids have something going on at that time that I don't have to attend (play date, birthday party, church camps etc). 6 and 4 year olds have more of these events than 3 and 1 year olds.

Had a baby in February. I'm playing way more.

Go to 2nd swing and find a good set that's a couple of year's old. You could easily find a 3-4 year old set of good irons for under $300. Find a cheap putter and Driver and he's set.

I will say that you should also consider lessons for him if you haven't already. Learning good habits as a young golfer will make the sport much more enjoyable for his future and make him a ton better at it.

Got a "First Tee" around?

Good results - no pain and hit the ball pretty well.

Now to make some time to play.

I've played a bit less - I can really only play on the weekend, so any kind of rain means no playing for the week.

Also it's such a time sink. I don't mind it, but hard to justify being gone for 4-5 hours at a time. I can play a softball game in an hour.

Thanks. This looks like a great deal. I currently use Callaway Diablos and am very happy with them. I'd let him try mine out but I'm a lefty and he's a righty.

played a full 18 at the home course yesterday, was cruising along after 10 holes at even par, fairways and greens, just cruising along then WHAM!

bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey, bogey

arggh golf....

I seem to be doing this a lot this year too. Holes 9-14 (6 holes) I'm averaging 4.75 over per round (even across different courses). The other 12 holes I'm averaging 2.5 over.

My game has been very erratic this year. Need to spend some time chipping.

Also does anyone have tips for making pressure putts? I've been struggling with confidence when score matters.

I've played less in the last 8 months than any time in the last 15 years, due mostly to work travel (new position). I was a 4 hdcp last August.

But I hit the range for 3 hours the last 2 weekends without playing, with the philosophy that I want to rid myself of old bad habits before playing again.

I'm using alignment sticks, working on tempo, bought a putting teaching tool, read some short game tips, etc.

I felt like I hit a scoring wall last summer that I couldn't get over, shooting within 4 strokes every weekend.

Now I'm hoping to tighten some things up so when I get back there, I'm better equipped for a step up. We'll see.

Ok fellas, help me hit a pitch shot. I'm about a 12-13 cap and can't hit a damn pitch or sand shot to save my life.

I play a nice chip and can put lights out but need your help here.

I'm no expert, but what works for me is:See the line

Be the line

Deep breath

Stroke the putt

Need more details. What's your miss? Chunking them? Thin? Shanks? Actually, it might not matter. I know my own poor chips and pitches are almost always from trying to swing harder instead of just being smooth and fluid.

I'm all over the place. With the chip I keep the hands quiet, weight forward, and stroke it. I feel like when I get wrist action, I'm not comfortable making a stroke at less than 3/4 swing.

Biggest mistake I see is someone taking a full backswing and then trying to "ease off" on the downswing to control distance. Think of a 50 yard shot as a long chip rather than a short wedge shot. Short backswing, and always accelerate through the ball. It's also not a shot that gets practiced a lot.

Accelerate through the chip. Set your hand early and hold the angle through the chip. Swing with your shoulders, not your hands.

This is my process for chip shots and I can do this pretty well. My issues come when I try the pitch shot. Any time I need an elevated shot, I am either skulling it or chunking it.

That's when you need a bigger takeaway...which requires a lot of practice.

Maybe I'm not understanding your terminology. Are you talking about like a 40 yd half shot from the fairway? Flop shot? Sounds like you are comfortable with the short chip.

so, I've decided at my home course to take some of the mental angst out of my issues I've had with the par 5's, to just pretend mentally that they are long par 4's. One is 490 uphill, one is 500 with a tricky left to right landing area (and I hit a draw, arghh) where the landing area past 280 is quite narrow, and one is 510 with the same type of narrow landing area with two bunkers right in the 280-300 area and a river all down the left side. the last two rounds I eagled twice, birdied 3 times and parred once. I'm guessing i'll just keep using this approach. Sad thing is I think I'm pretty long driver of the ball until I look at the US Open layout at Pinehurst:

#2 507 yds par 4

#4 529 yrds par 4

#8 502 yrds par 4

#11 483 yds par 4

#12 484 yds par 4

#16 528 yds par 4

I'm thinking if you can consistently drive 300 or longer, you have a chance at the US open on those holes, but if you're Jim Furyk, hitting 275-285, you're screwed

I shot a 76 yesterday, ties by best round ever. The other 76 was at a much easier course though. Made a handful of 3-10 footers to make it happen. Only one bird.

To be a bit fair, these fairways are running pretty hard.

Just got back from my golf trip...

i played 2 rounds completely drunk or hungover...

something I normally don't do... the 88 and 92 those days dropped me to a 5th place finish overall (with hcp)

I was never higher then 3rd. The 47-37 put me back early but shot 80 then forget where I parked my golf swing g

Looking for some new irons.

Love my Taylor Made R7s but they are 6 years old and biased to draw. I no longer have any fade to correct and mentally have a ridiculous time trying to cut or hit dog leg rights.

Even if just for the mental aspect, I need a straight bias. Still have lots of work to do so let's cap the budget at 600. I'm open to used, but certainly want steel shaft, no blades, no hybrids.

Any suggestions folks for an intermediate player in that range?

Im pretty happy with my AP2s.

I hold out from 135 from a muddy fairway bunker for eagle today. PW, 3/4 shot. Hit it PERFECT. Everyone went nuts when it spun back into the hole.

I played as a single and got paired up with 2 other guys. A single walking behind us caught up on 8 and we had a bunch of groups ahead of us so we let him join us. He rode with me in the cart. This guy was like The Dude from Lebiwski but skinnier. Clearly high as a kite. Mid 50s, looked like a total burnout. We hit into the group ahead one time on accident and when he went up to find his ball in the fairway it was gone. He obsessed for the next 6 holes that the group ahead of us must have taken his ball.

He was going to confront the group about taking his ball till he realized it was John Paxon and Gar Foreman (Bulls front office). He harassed them telling the not to sign Mello and to sign Kevin Love instead. Gar just drove off but Paxon stayed and asked the guy for his opinion. Pretty surreal.
