Sounds like they are opening contract negotiations with Graham - would love to see him back next year. Cole is done. They need to be working something with Maclin too - if he walks, we're really going to be relying on Huff and Matthews next year.

Hate to say it but I don't think we make the playoffs. Too many blown opportunities. But we did pretty well considering shady fell off a cliff and we lost our starting qb. Defense and special teams really surprised me. Who would have thought our offense would be our weakness

Well you can't predict injuries and obviously the Foles one was a big one.

Well we had a backup QB for half the year.

Its not time to give up yet. If Dallas beats Indy then we can get all depressed.

Chip: 'Shame on us' if Eagles miss playoffs with 11 wins

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000445389/article/chip-shame-on-us-if-eagles-miss-playoffs-with-11-wins

"Right now, we've only got nine wins," Kelly said Wednesday, per ESPN.com. "I mean, for us to think of questions like that, that doesn't help us beat Washington. So I don't really think about it. If we win 11 games and it's not good enough to get in, shame on us because we didn't win the right games. That's the bottom line. That's what this whole deal is all about and we know it going in."

While I hate needing to rely on another team to get into the playoffs, I don't really see Indy losing to Dallas.
I don't really see it as "relying on another team". The way I see it is it's a 16 game season and both teams will have an 11-5 record at the end of those 16 games including one win against each other (assuming Dallas loses to Indy). Who cares when they won and lost those games. It's not the Eagles problem that they win the tiebreaker. It's not as if the Eagles would be "backing into the playoffs".

I know I said I wouldn't say anymore tinfoil hat material but the Colts have already clinched a playoff spot so a loss doesn't keep them out of the playoffs. A loss by Dallas could knock them out of the playoffs. The bottom line is we should taken care of business when the opportunity presented itself. This team has had some big swings of highs and lows this season but if I had to put a finger on just one thing it would be our turnovers that ultimately did us in.
Indy still has playoff seeding. Denver plays Cincy Monday Night. So they will play hard to have a shot at the bye. Anyone that thinks Luck and company won't play hard is fooling themselves. I'm not saying Indy wins, but no way they take the game off.

First half of the year massive O-Line injuries.

Second half of the year backup QB

Never really got into a rhythm and made far too many mistakes (turnovers) yet still will win 10-11 games and finish top 5 in many offensive categories.

It's far from over here, IMO. Any team can win/lose any week and let's not pretend Dallas has been 'big' in week 17 'win and you're in' games.

I think the bigger concern is even if this team makes the playoffs, they are either going with Sanchez or Foles (who hasn't played in so many weeks). But hey--get in and anything is possible.

If Indy loses to Dallas and PIttsburgh wins out, Pittsburgh is the 3 seed. This means that Indy will have to most likely go to NE in round 2, a place where they will get destroyed.

If Indy wins, we have a chance at getting into the playoffs. If they lose we are out of it. I'd say, at this point, we are relying on them.

ETA. I think that Indy wins this game, FWIW.

Foles was huge and so were all the injuries on the OL, especially early on. Shady has had a down year and Cooper has been awful as well. Even with that we have 9 wins, with 2 games left and we're averaging 29.7 ppg....amazing if you ask me

Incredible article on 2011 1st round pick Danny Watkins.

http://mmqb.si.com/2014/12/17/danny-watkins-philadelphia-eagles/

This quote killed me, along with about a dozen others!

"Mudd remembers word spreading through the Eagles’ facility sometime during the second half of that nightmare 2012 season. This was Mudd’s 45th year in professional football, as a player and a coach. “Never have I heard something so ridiculous,” he says. “Not in my entire NFL career.”

Danny Watkins was spotted on the 11 o’clock news, in full gear. Not pine green with a white 63 on his chest. Philadelphia Fire Department. Watkins insists it was a misunderstanding, that he was only wearing the gear as part of charity work with his firefighter-related foundation.

As far as the Eagles organization was concerned, they finally had an explanation. This was why their first-round pick was giving them the kind of measly performance they could get from a street free agent. He wasn’t putting in the time, not pulling his weight during the week. Watkins denies it, but those within the organization were certain what they had found: Danny Watkins was moonlighting as a firefighter.

http://www.crossingbroad.com/2014/08/here-are-photos-of-danny-watkins-actively-fighting-a-four-alarm-fire-as-an-eagle.html

I find this fascinating. Pictures and video of Watkins fighting a four alarm fire... three days after playing Cincinnati. Was this a big deal in 2012 and I just missed it?

Here’s how one of the tipsters described Watkins’ involvement with the fire department:

He used to ride the fire trucks and fight fires on a regular basis with the Philadelphia Fire Department during the season. This fire was on the Eagles Bye week. The pictures attached are of him with Rescue-1, the cities elite firefighter unit.

I am not sure if you are aware that non-fire department personnel are not allowed to fight fires in the city. But since he was an Eagle and would regularly provide game tickets to the right people they allowed it to happen.

And I am not an expert on pro athlete contacts, but I would guess that running into a burning building would be some violation of the terms.

Ya I read this yesterday.. pretty crazy article and so nuts that an NFL player was volunteering as a firefighter during the season behind the team's back haha. So nuts! Seems like a good kid though, just clearly landed in the wrong profession. Seems much happier doing what he's doing now. Everyone dug into Andy for this pick, but to be fair, it seems like if he loved football half as much as he loved firefighting, he woulda have turned into a great pick and long term starter for us. His head just wasn't where it should have been and perhaps he hid that well during team interviews pre draft.

Marcus Smith doesn't want to be an EMT, does he??
LMFAO!!!

Really good read. One thing they didn't really cover though--unless I missed it--what did he do form 18-22? Kid was a freshman at 22. I always thought one of the things that killed him was that he was a "man among boys" at the college level playing guys not yet grown into their full maturity. Once he got to the nfl, it was game over. I always hated Reid for not picking up on this. Kinda like the "hey let's get this skier to return punts for us--that'll be innovative!"

It's just another symptom of how little attention to detail there was during the final years of the Reid regime. See also: Washburn, Castillo, most of the rest of the 2010 and 2011 drafts...

Dallas is 3-4 at home, losing to the 49er's, Redskins, Cardinals and Eagles. In fact all their losses have been at home. Their wins at home haven't really been super impressive either. They DID beat up on the Saints, but it seems like everyone's done that this year. They needed overtime to beat Houston. The other team they've beaten is NYG.

Cole out, Graham in at OLB v Washington. I'm good with that because I feel Graham is playing well and the defense needed to get him more snaps. But it affects depth, obviously (down Kendricks, Ryans, Cole!), and 1st round pick Smith is going to have to rotate in this week. An article from Tuesday discussing this:

http://www.phillymag.com/birds247/2014/12/16/smiths-development-stifled-switch/#more-2885188

Smith’s Development “Stifled” By Switch

It was out of necessity that Marcus Smith II was shuffled from outside linebacker to inside linebacker earlier this year, and it is out of necessity that he is now being shuffled back to his original position.

Trent Cole broke his hand against Dallas and is expected to be sidelined for at least one week. That means Brandon Graham steps into the starter’s role while Smith figures to be the next man in.

“I expect to get some snaps. I’m not sure how many snaps I’ll get but I’m sure to get action,” said Smith. "Hopefully go out there, run around and just make a play.”

Smith is currently practicing at the Predator position, so he’ll likely rotate in for Graham at times. Bryan Braman is the other option at outside linebacker.

Smith was moved inside back in September after Mychal Kendricks and Najee Goode went down with injuries. He was already having a difficult time acclimating to the pro level, and now had to do so while learning a new position. The results haven’t been good. Smith has appeared in six games and has played just 74 snaps, totaling one tackle and one quarterback hurry.

“We set him back by moving him inside, but we needed that because of all the injuries we had at inside,” said Billy Davis. “It’s a credit to him that he has the mental capability and physical capability to go inside and learn. Now, he didn’t overtake anybody because he’s never been in there. I didn’t think he’d overtake anybody never having done it. But now as we grow and go forward that’s something that he can use as a plus instead of a minus that it was this year.

“Now he goes back outside and again he has to get the rust off and from that aspect his development has been stifled a little because of what we had to do but in the long run, in the future I think he will benefit from this move. “

As to what position Smith will end up playing long term, Davis said “the jury is still out.” The general feeling, though, is he’ll end up on the outside.

“Watching some of the things he does, naturally I think he’s a really good pass rusher, uses his hands well as he’s rushing the passer from what I’ve seen at practice,” said DeMeco Ryans. “I see him as an outside linebacker, more of an athletic guy that can drop into coverage and also rush the passer.”

Smith admitted that it has been a struggle to keep his confidence up, particularly early on when he was asked to make the switch. He has leaned on guys like Brandon Graham to learn how to navigate through a rookie campaign that has fallen short of expectations.

“I think he worries about a lot. But that was me, too,” said Graham. “I know exactly what you’re feeling. Anybody that’s a first rounder that’s not doing good is probably in the same boat. Thinking about, 'Man, you know what you can do, you’ve been doing it all the way up to now. What’s different?' And that’s what you have to find: what’s different. And once I learned the speed and what coaches really wanted, I think stuff started to settle down for me and I was able to focus on what I needed to do.

“If you’re worried about the outside world then you already lost,” Graham added, “because right now this is our job and you’ve got to go out there and go to practice and you’ve gotta work hard and just show ‘em. You’ve got to build that trust up. That’s it.”

Smith said he received a warm welcome when he returned to the outside linebacker room this week. It’s been a season of detours. But now he’s back at his more natural position and will have a chance to contribute in a meaningful game come Saturday.

“I thought I was going to be playing and I thought I was going to be making a lot of plays but it didn’t turn out that way,” said Smith. “All I know is I’ve been trying to work hard to get back to the player I know I can be. I’m happy to be back at outside linebacker, but it’s always an uphill battle.”

Washington injury news - Hatcher would be a big loss, he's not expected to play.

Starting defensive end Jason Hatcher has been sidelined with a knee injury and, according to the Washington Post, it is "a big possibility" that his season is over.

--------------

Have to find a way to get this one; even as 7.5 point favorites road wins against division opponents aren't a given. Chance to go 10-5, 4-1 in division here and keep lots of options open.

Could be fun watching the rest of the NFL Sunday; every year somebody loses a game they're not supposed to around this part of the season. Hope it's not Philly this time.

Lmao @ Smith's ambitions lol.

He was drafted to fill a need(like Watkins was, yuck). Where the heck do you find time for him to actually fill that need? You sitting A pro-bowl player in Barwin, a savvy vet in Cole, or a per snap monster in B. Graham? Hell no.

Let's just hope if he is the Trent Cole backup plan that he can produce then. I don't see him living to to the draft position, but he should be solid.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Cole move on after the year. And, assuming Graham is re-signed (apparently he wants $7-8M and the club offering $6, but at least there is dialogue this early and he 'wants to stay.')

In 2015, you have Graham/Barwin at OLB and Smith as the primary backup to both. Plenty of chance to have a good offseason, a full camp, and make a nice jump in his second season.

Too early to close the book yet. He was bottlenecked behind Cole/Barwin/Graham this season and then moved inside after Kendricks/Ryans were hurt.

But early returns are not promising!

ETA: http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/philadelphia-eagles

Cole, if cut before June 1, would carry $3.2M in 'dead' money and save $8.2M off the 2015 cap. $8.2 they can put to better use, IMO, if they go Graham/Barwin and might shed some light on the OLB pick in the 1st.

I think Dallas is going to beat Indy. Liking over Indy's road schedule they have played close games or beat chumps when they won on the road.
I wish I shared your optimism. This one could go either way. Its all gonna come down to if we can run the ball effectively. Everyone is talking about Murray's hand. The bigger issue may be that Martin and Free may not play.

I could see our offense stalling and Luck lightin up our D. Also, in big games I'm not sold on 'ol Red as great at making adjustments. Just another week 16 with the east still up for grabs......I have a feeling the skins will play tough the next two weeks also. I just don't see em mailin it in against two division rivals with everything to lose.

Eagles' Brandon Graham likely to test free agency

Conor Orr

Around The NFL Writer

The Eagles would like to lock down Brandon Graham, but it makes much more sense for the edge rusher to test the open market first.

According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Graham, the team's 2010 first-round pick, appreciates the surge in interest for his services, but will likely be inclined to see what another team would pay, or if another team would stick him at a more natural position in a 4-3 scheme.

"It feels good, because at the end of the day I wasn't supposed to be here," Graham said. "I'm just happy I changed the opinion of a lot of people. I just kept focusing on what I needed to do and that's work hard and let everything fall into place."

Earlier in the week, it seemed there was a little more optimism surrounding a potential deal, which the Eagles started working on a few week back.

But Graham has also been watching players like Jeremy Maclin bet on themselves. The possibility of cashing in sounds just as enticing, especially after a season with 13.5 tackles for loss, 14 hurries and 5.5 sacks.

Chasing Smith in the draft was definitely a mistake.
I gave them the benefit of the doubt but its clear it was a last second "#### what do we do now" pick once HaHa went.
If that's the case, it makes the pick even worse. No way you should have that kind of moment.
Bradly Roby or Deone Bucannon would have been great. A lot of us wanted Bucannon there. Smith was a 3rd-4th round projection from what I knew, along with a few 2nds. I figure they thought he was the consolation prize for teams that had a hard on for Anthony Barr. As you stated, reaching is still a no-no.

Good for Graham. Loved him coming out of Michigan. Funny how the 2010 1st round bust is a very productive player we hope to resign.

Last year of his rookie deal he set himself up for $8M per.

Barwin on one side at OLB...Cole a cap casualty IMO, saves over $6M...if Graham walks Marcus Smith only other OLB. Interested to see this play out.

PICK ANALYSIS:

"Marcus Smith is a pretty exciting edge player. The important thing ultimately is 'can this kid play?' They have Connor Barwin on one side and Trent Cole, who will turn 32 years old, on the other. In that scheme he's a perfect fit. The pick attacks an area of need for the Eagles, and they got some extra picks in the process." -- Mike Mayock

Gary Cobb was co-hosting today and said what he hears from football people he talks to, is that Smith isn't' an aggressive person/player and "doesn't like to hit people."

Fantastic qualities for a linebacker.

Eagles almost signed Jason Worilds before he was transitioned by Pittsburgh last year. Don't be surprised if he ends up starting opposite Barwin next season.

I heard this also. Not good. I think the plan was to let Cole walk and replace him with Smith. Now, Graham playing well and Smith struggling leads them to negotiate with Graham, presumably to keep Smith as a backup for another year. Graham walks they will need to add an OLB in FA. Very important pass rush position for this D.

Missed field goals, Sanchez turnover with the game on the line, bunch of penalties. Yep. Maybe next year.
I thought getting nothing after they got the T.O. to start the 3rd quarter was huge. Never really seemed to get their mojo back after that.

"Our secondary is pathetic" - the Gov on Post Game Live.

Sucks but with Sanchez we are going nowhere and would just get smoked against a good team. His last drive is typical of what he has been. We need to improve our DB play significantly and even Foles I think gives us way more upside. Maybe we stick with him but Kelly takes a mid round QB he thinks he can develop.

Yeah, there's no QB available this year. Just build that secondary up and hope either you can find a QB in 2016 or Foles can play at the 2013 level again.

At least with him we know that upside from last year exists.....Sanchez is a game or 2 sub at best. Seems like players like Chip so we should be able to draw a FA or two and hopefully will draft more difference makers on D
