***Official 2014 World Cup Thread*** (3 Viewers)

Never been so proud of a team I've supported in defeat. Howard unreal. Looking forward to 2018.
So much will take place before 2018 - this is an exciting time to be a fan in the US>
They're going to lose some mainstays for the next cycle: Howard, Deuce, DMB, Jones. But the talent pool is deeper than ever.
But as good as those mainstays are, they aren't exactly getting us closer to being world class.

I like the statement the announcer made there towards the end...

"this team just doesn't seem to know when they are beaten"

great effort...Belgium could very well win the whole thing

Ughhh. Just feel destroyed. Maybe it's better if the Vikings never make another Super Bowl. That really might kill me. Lakers have won multiple. Kings multiple. Dodgers got me one and maybe another this year. Maybe I'm just being greedy. :X
The Dodgers won during the Reagan administration

Can someone explain to me why the US seemed to kick it backwards a lot when they had possession while other teams move forward much more quickly? It always looked like the midfielders had their backs to the goal and were passing it back a ton.

Well I was a fan for that one. Also a Kings fan at the time so you can guess how nice the past few years have been.

I loved that also. Class act, that Tim Howard. Enjoyed listening to him just now.

Is soccer back to sucking for another 47 months?
Pretty much but was a good finish by USA. Great effort. Can't fault them for that.
Lot's of denial about the truth in this thread. I'm going to go watch bobsledding now.
Ooooooooh....so you are the reason the natives are hostile. Makes sense. Strange choice.
That was my second post in this thread. This is the third.

Costa Rica have earned their spot, but they don't seem to fit in with the other 7. Should be some real battles with Brazil/Columbia, France/Germany, and Argentina/Belgium.

Klinsmann has to wonder what would have happened if he turned them loose earlier. To me, the story for the US were the wingers. We went defensive with Zusi and zBedoya and they just didn't give us the presence we needed going forward. Hard to know what might have happened asking more of our fullbacks defensively, but I think we needed to pull that trigger to chase games earlier.
He let them loose after Belgium's first goal to try to equalize fast. That cost the USA another goal. Then, Belgium sat back and just had to clear the ball and withstand the onslaught. Belgium gave up one goal with ~8 minutes left. Clearing the ball was their goal from then on. The 2nd wind of the USA was impressive but Belgium was sitting back allowing much of it. If you watch the replays of that last 8 minutes, had Belgium needed a goal, USA only had one defender ready with another on a shorter leash but had Belgium needed a goal with USA attacking like that... Belgium could have easily got another one.

Oh and we really missed Beckerman. They had soooooo much time from 20 yards and out. If not for Howard standing on his head, could have been ugly

:sadbanana:

Gotta love the #FIFA clock manager - that clearly was the fastest 2 goals and 1 sub ever #eyeroll

And now the ball of cheer that is Landon Donovan...

"Hey look at me, I am both arrogant and ignorant!"

Do people even take a second to think before they post on how moronic, idiotic, ignorant, unintelligent, and just plain stupid they sound?
Not sure. I'm guessing you didn't think too much about calling him "moronic, idiotic, ignorant, unintelligent". Don't do that.

No, I thought long and hard about and I stand by it.

If you think walking into a thread and trolling like that has even a shred of common decency or intelligence behind it I have to say I am 1000% in disagreement with you.

There is no place for that crap.

12 years ago - who was Landon Donovan? On the world stage, he was a relative unknown.

There is the point - not what he as done in the last 12 years. Not a discussion on whether he belongs now - only an observation that 12 years ago, Donovan was the young player coming in with limited professional experience, and started the journey to becoming the greatest USMNT player ever. It would be folly to suggest that Green can live up to Donovan's career, but not so out of the ordinary to think he could come in and provide a spark, and a moment, where we will look back in 12 years, and think - thats where it all began.

I sure hope this was the start to a long USMNT career

That stuck with me too.

I don't know much about soccer as I showed here. But I know competition. Even someone with my skill level could see we were clearly not as talented. But we hung in and battled.

At the end of the day, that's what a ton of sports is about.

Then let me be more clear. Neither of you post stuff like that on this board if you want to keep posting here.

Thanks.

I know everyone hates Gus Johnson but after this all gloom and doom pair all the time I think anything will be refreshing.

Honestly wish we'd had the guys that were doing all of the Mexico games.

It's so infrequent and most of the players are overseas. It's closer to an Olympic type sport here. It's growth will always be limited by those things. I'm not denying it's growth but expecting it to catch on every year is asking a lot.
