What a great experience!
The park looked fantastic, the weather was beautiful, the fans were awesome.
Pro sports in KC has more of a college sports feel. Kauffman and Arrowhead aren't in the middle of downtown; there isn't much around them at all other than the gigantic parking lots servicing both stadiums. So instead of hitting up local establishments and then over to the game, you get to the stadium real early and join in the tailgating culture. When we got there, tailgates were already in full effect: grills going, coolers out, baseballs and footballs getting tossed around, washers/ladder ball/cornhole games in effect... it was a blast.
My daughter and I weren't meeting up with a big group, so we brought some sweets to share, and armed with those and our "HUNTER PENCE PLAYED MARV IN HOME ALONE" sign, we quickly made some friends at tailgates, trading sweets for burgers and dogs, sharing some laughs and tossing some washers around. Had fun telling folks I went to the '85 Series when I was my daughter's age and now I'm passing on the tradition (neglecting to mention I went as a Cardinals fan at Busch II - insignificant detail).
Kauffman is aging a little but it's still a great park, especially when the weather isn't too hot. The World Series skin was well-done: cool paint job in left, beat seeing the World Series logos and such painted on the field.
Then the game started. OOOF. Wasn't sure right away if Pence's ball in the first had the distance, but when Cain gave up on it after a couple steps you knew it was gone. Crowd was ready to explode when the Royals had runners on second and third with no outs, leveled up when the walk loaded the bases, but give Bumgarner all the credit he deserves - if he doesn't get out of that jam it's a different ball game, but he did under some bright lights and a loud crowd. That was money.
Bummer the home team lost, but still great getting to see the Series in person. Go Royals!

Wow, what an awful game and an awful experience.
I had to work yesterday so i basically got out to the park with my buddy just in time to get into the stadium about 35 min before game-time.
If i had been able to tailgate it looked like it might have been a cool tailgating atmosphere.
Game didn't really feel any different than the other 2 playoff games i'd been to so far (game 3 alds and game 3 alcs) and San Francisco did the most effective thing they could have in the game.. came out hot, destroyed shields and took the crowd out of the game within the first 10 minutes.
That was the quietest over-capacity crowd i'd ever seen at the stadium.....
Then again there were a lot of non-fans or johnny come lately fans there also.. the types that are just there because they have the money.
I left in the 8th inning and really never got to enjoy anything except for the brief stretch where we had dudes on 2nd and 3rd with no outs.
I was really thinking about buying some over-priced tickets for tonight's game, but that game last night left me with such a horrible taste in my mouth that I'm not going to do that anymore.
I think the Royals can still compete in this series... but it's going to have to be in spite of James Shields who clearly is slumping at the worst time... none of his post-season starts have been really that good... I accept that we will lose to Bumgarner in game 5 also... The question will be is if a rookie starter tonight can handle the pressure... if we can keep the game close enough to play Royals baseball.
I know it's just one game.. but it felt unbelievably deflating... but if we do get a win tonight I suppose things are still looking ok. Knowing our ace isn't going to win a game though makes it a lot tougher.

If Shields went by "Jimmy", he never would have been tagged with the "Big Game James" moniker. Kind of like how everyone named Earl who played sports was called "Pearl" at some point.Greco said:

It'll be interesting to see how KC responds to a postseason loss, especially one at home. I'm assuming this is how most Royals feel right now but there is still a lot of ball to be played. If they can grab a lead and hand it to the bullpen tonight the sour will start to taste a little sweeter on the flight to SF.
