He has closer stuff. The big change for him this season is keeping the ball in the park. Last year he would occasionally groove one that got hit to the bleachers. Now he keeps battling.I like this Finnegan kid a lot. He's a potential middle-of-rotation starter. Pitched in the CWS in June.

 
Haters can hate, but if Vogelsong can muster out a win tomorrow, I would throw Petit at home game 5 and Bumgarner on the road game 6. I could not as a manager love thinking about Peavy and Hudson on the road for a WS ring.

But I have no WS rings :shrug:

Very good point. I still would get Petit a start - his xFIP at home this year is 2.53 although a lot of that were late season starts very dilapidated road teams but he can't be worse than Vogelsong. Bumgarner, Petit, Peavy/anybody, Bumgarner does look best.

 
There wasn't much for the highlight reel but Game 3 was a tense game that somehow produced five runs out of thirteen baserunners. I'm glad both Guthrie and Hudson were up for the game of their lives. Guthrie deserved the W but still wouldn't get credit for a QS in some of the crazy leagues you guys play in. The Giants grinded out a few good ABs against the Royals bullpen but only converted once. A very close ball/strike call that went against Javy Lopez was pivotal for the two run inning. but the ump was giving the corners consistently all night.

I watched the game with my drunk neighbor who's from KC and has supported the team since the 70s. He said the best thing about this Royals team is that they're doing it in classic Royals style. It was a good point but I had to deal with a lot of other KC fan BS over 3 hours to get it.

Good game tonight. The Giants played well but KC played better. Must win game tomorrow.

I thought Hudson was going to get shelled on his second lap through the order. In the first couple innings, he put a few in the middle of the plate and had a couple more where the location seemed to be far away from where Posey was setting him up. But he sure settled down nicely. How many in a row did he get out? 10? 11?

Whatever ghost came to Ned Yost in a dream before the wild card game and told him, "It's OK to bring in Herrera in the 6th" is the unsung hero of the Royals postseason.

Stat nerds probably hated Yost's decision to start Dyson in CF and Cain in RF, benching a high-contact hitter like Aoki. But moving Gordon up to the 2-spot seemed to help his bat, and there were a few tough balls hit to right that probably drop around Aoki but Cain was able to catch.

Why not throw Petit instead of Vogelsong? You keep Bumgarner in G5, you are a) assured he's going to pitch again this year and b) can potentially get a few innings out of him in a potential g7.

 
I think starting Vogelsong on regular rest is still the right move. He'll have a short leash because of the circumstances but keeping Petit in the pen gives them more situational flexibility in game 4 and beyond. Vogelsong hasn't appeared in relief since April 2011.

Cart is way before the horse here.

Seems like the most rational thing to do would be to give the better pitcher more innings and the lesser (way lesser) pitcher fewer. But what do I know, Giants seem to have it figured out.

 
Thank goodness Harold and Tom keep telling us that we just saw good baseball plays. Sometimes I forget what sport I'm watching.
