Via Ben Smith, Hillary gives a less than adamant answer to a question about Obama's religion on 60 Minutes. Hillary claims, "I take him on the basis of what he says. And, you know, there isn't any reason to doubt that." It's an issue where even an accidental slip this can do damage:

If you can watch that 23 second clip and come away thinking that she's expressing a sentiment remotely similar to what Walker is expressing ... I don't even know what to say. She says "no" or "of course not" in no uncertain terms like ten times, and adds the "... as far as I know" as a casual rejoinder to the sentence "there's nothing to base that on." Come on.
Ok, let's see:

Hillary - "I take him on the basis of what he says. And, you know, there isn't any reason to doubt that."

Walker - "I don’t know. I presume he is.”

Hillary's campaign also circulated the pictures of Obama in garb and also suggested, in a Democratic debate, that Obama should have personally walked out of Wright's church.

Hillary in March 2008 was in a heated campaign to gain back ground from Obama in the Democratic nomination race - which btw she did.

eta - Hillary also demanded that Obama renounce Farrakhan, which he then did. She had a whole successful strategy of this in the Democratic nomination race.

If Hillary hadn't raised both the Kenya point and questioned his religion, this might be a good place to pick on...

Why did you edit each quote?

Here's the full quotes for each. Clinton:

“You don't believe that Senator Obama's a Muslim?” Kroft asked Sen. Clinton.

“Of course not. I mean, that, you know, there is no basis for that. I take him on the basis of what he says. And, you know, there isn't any reason to doubt that,” she replied.

“You said you'd take Senator Obama at his word that he's not…a Muslim. You don't believe that he's…,” Kroft said.

“No. No, there is nothing to base that on. As far as I know,” she said.

“It's just scurrilous…?” Kroft inquired.

“Look, I have been the target of so many ridiculous rumors, that I have a great deal of sympathy for anybody who gets, you know, smeared with the kind of rumors that go on all the time,” Clinton said.
Walker Part 1:

“I’ve actually never talked about it or I haven’t read about that,” Walker said, his voice calm and firm. “I’ve never asked him that,” he added. “You’ve asked me to make statements about people that I haven’t had a conversation with about that. How [could] I say if I know either of you are a Christian?”
Walker Part 2:

“I don’t know. I presume he is."

“You’re not going to get a different answer than I said before. As someone who is a believer myself, I don’t presume to know someone’s beliefs about whether they follow Christ or not unless I’ve actually talked with him.”
Looks like Hillary was right about people smearing her with ridiculous rumors. Garbage like this costs Hillary opponents their credibility and their voices aren't heard by many when they bring up actual legitimate concerns about Clinton.

Trump's tapping into the pissed off Republican voting segment is killing me. It is early and I have full faith he will fizzle but damn it, if for some damn reason the GOP goes insane and moves this goof ball to the nomination- I am voting for the Democratic ticket. Even if it is Sanders!

Ok thanks for the full context, in my opinion this...

“You said you'd take Senator Obama at his word that he's not…a Muslim. You don't believe that he's…,” Kroft said.“No. No, there is nothing to base that on. As far as I know,” she said.
...is not a very strong rebuke. Sorry just my take.

Ok, so I hear you, I posted this article further up. Take it or leave it as fact or innuendo. I think I can grant perhaps we're both making suppositions about Hillary in this particular instance. I've said my piece, so thanks for listening.

Why shouldn't Republican voters be pissed off at Trump's biggest enemy, which is the way in which information is disseminated and processed?

I don't even want to call it "the media," because that gives it a name and inherent weight that it doesn't deserve.

I have to believe that the polling data we see now is just a way to give the finger to basically everyone. I just can not see how many people at all would ever seriously back this clown.

My bottom 6 AKA Trump and below.

12. Trump

13. Perry

14 Huckabee

15. Santorum

How does Trump not land 17th? :loco:
All kinds of crazy after him. There's a slight chance that Trump does have a secret plan to defeat ISIS and will replace Obama Care with something terrific.

Given a choice this is the order I would vote for them.

I'm stunned, too. Really. Trump??

Perhaps the GOP is not even worthy of consideration at this point, though they could have used somebody telling the media to go to hell for a long time.

Hate is a stronger word than I would use. I don't think someone whose main agenda comes from being a social conservative should be president.

So what's the optimum strategy for the JV debate, say/do something outrageous to get your name in the news ("can you believe Bobby Jindal murdered a puppy on stage to drive home a point about marginal tax rates?") or try to present yourself as the adult in the room while everyone self-destructs around you?

If someone isn't at least doing push-ups or burpees during the undercard debate they need new advisors.

Weird. When I talk about my faith, privately, publicly, any-ly, I sort of remember which faith I am.

I have none. I'm agnostic, and a lapsed Catholic.

Did I st-st-stutter?

If I were George Pataki I would wear one of those "I'm with Stupid t-shirts" with an arrow pointing towards another candidate.

looking at what Hillary or Walker said, I think criticizing them is fairly ridiculous. Nobody can read another's mind as to what they truly believe, but you do accept what they outwardly say without reservation. I agree with Walker that it's a ridiculous question that gets the media excited , but the populace could doesn't give two ####s about....

Let me say my point was directed at Tim and the article he referenced and the very specific poll they were relying on. I agree with Rove above, I'm just saying that it is or was a GOP only thought is inaccurate. Walker also didn't say "oh yeah he's a Muslim" he said he didn't know which at least in 2010 is what almost half Democrats said.

So we're still worried whether Obama's a Muslim or not?

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-official-gop-debate-drinking-game-rules-20150805

Drink THE FIRST TIME:

1. Donald Trump mentions his wealth, or how smart he is.

2. A candidate mentions Benghazi

3. A candidate says, "This president..."

4. A candidate whines about not getting called on enough.

5. Someone promises to "take America back."

6. Trump interrupts someone by saying, "Excuse me, let me answer that…"

7. Anyone mentions Hitler, Nazis or Neville Chamberlain. Includes related imagery, e.g. "ovens."

8. The crowd cheers a racist/bigoted statement by a candidate.

9. A candidate mentions his poor/hardscrabble upbringing, or a parent who "worked every day of his life."

10. A candidate talks about "stopping Hillary Clinton."

11. Anyone warns the U.S. is becoming Greece.

12. Trump refers to himself in the third person.

13. Anyone invokes St. Ronald Reagan.

Drink EVERY time a candidate:

14. Claims a positive relationship with a minority. Also known as the, "Some of my best friends are…" rule.

15. Tries to speak Spanish

16. Tries to warm up to the Ohio crowd with an awkward LeBron shout-out.

Drink EVERY TIME you hear the word(s):

17. "I'm not a scientist."

18. "You can keep your doctor."

19. "ACORN."

20. "The war on Christians."

21. "Thug."

22. "Right here in Ohio."

23. "Culture of dependency."

TAKE A SHOT OF JAGER AT ANY MENTION OF:

24. "Kenya."

25. "All Lives Matter."

My prediction...Rubio makes his move up tonight. He checks all the boxes on the usual criteria which makes people good at these things.

A debate with 10 people on stage with 1 minute to answer is going to be more about one-liners, and personality. Even if Rubio, Christie, Huckabee, etc. have great policy ideas it will be difficult to provide any detail on such a crowded stage.

I agree with the point about the format. Lots to like about Rubio but he does need space to explain his story. The main issue will be if anyone takes a swing at Trump. And the other is if Trump will take shots at Hillary and just remain above the whole thing or will he be dragged into a face poking contest.

My prediction...Rubio makes his move up tonight. He checks all the boxes on the usual criteria which makes people good at these things.
Yeah, his interview with Megyn Kelly was really impressive. That is, until he got one of his nervous ticks and started beating his foot against the chair.

Weirdly, I randomly tuned in last night thinking it was the debate, and was treated to O'Reilly and Kelly. Not dumb people, for sure.

Rubio is the one I'm most interested in seeing tonight. He hasn't learned to settle down though and speak naturally. His closing statement to Kelly last night was impressive until she kinda called him out and he admitted it's just a memorized story. Basically saying "yeah, I've said that so many times already" I'm sure it's hard to sound original and authentic time after time in all of these interviews but if he can relax and not worry about the clichés, it would serve him well. I think his nerves will get the better of him, like with the water bottle.

Also, he sweats like a mofo. Once he gets under the bright lights it starts. Wouldn't be surprised if he has a mop and bucket behind his dais.

He's needs to stop patronizing. Just speak. Nobody likes being talked down to. And lose the forced smile.

My prediction is Christie mops the floor with these guys tonight. He's so good when speaking that you almost believe what he's saying. Nobody quite knows how to handle Trump yet. I still think they're just going to wait him out and not engage. There's no way he can get the nomination, eventually he'll be gone. Only Perry was dumb enough to get involved with him. You have about 15% of likely voters up for grabs, you don't want to lose them forever right at the start. Bush has yet to find his footing but he hasn't shot himself in the foot yet either. He'd be smart to line up against Huckabee tonight for a variety of reasons. Huckabee has no shot at the nomination but doesn't have the support Trump does. Bush can come off reasonable and not alienate the far right, or at least not a lot of it.

Is this true?

I heard that if a candidate mentions another candidate by name, it gives that person 30 seconds to respond.

That leads me to believe there won't be as much confrontation as many believe. No one is going to want to mention Trump and give him more of the spotlight by giving him the last word.
