Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (2 Viewers)

Is Jeb not even sniffing the nomination more embarrassing to the Bush family than W's presidency?
It's a reflection of the losers before him. Bush Sr. sucked. Bush Jr. sucked as bad as any president history (-40% in the S&P, -48% in NAZ, for example). Who in their right mind would sign up for round 3? I like my money.
Losers before him like Obama. Can't forget him either.
A loser as well but a loser that was in office while my $ increased by +100%. I'll take the guy that was in office AND my account was growing.
And no new wars. The Bush's love starting themselves some wars.

Watched some of the debate and had to turn it off because I can only take so much. It's embarrassing that it seems this is the best we can do in this country. I mean really, is this the best we can do?

Trump-- I guess his willingness to be politically incorrect is a plus but come on, this guy should not come close to the White House.

Cruz-- the guy is scary. I have always said that whoever is president we can survive it. If he were to win I would have to change that.

Rubio-- guy is a joke. I get the sense that he is trying to be some sort of Rep JFK statesman. Someone needs to tell him he's not even close. Does this guy EVER just say what he thinks? He is so full of talking points and statements that have been rehearsed in front of mirror 3,000 times...total rubbish.

Bush-- give me a break

Christie-- get your fat ### off the stage. Guy is a complete ####### joke.

Carson-- People seem to assume this guy is smart. I'm even starting to wonder if he didn't get his MD from a correspondence school that mails you a diploma for signing up for a newsletter. Guy is just trying to sell books, please go away.

Kasich-- maybe the only adult on the stage.

So it's a pathetic set of candidates imo. The D side is not much better. I like Bill Clinton but his wife is not Bill. Bernie stands for just about everything I believe in and so he gets my vote. So we have one candidate that I would consider voting for in the general..ONE ####### candidate.... just wow.

Have you ever voted Republican in a Presidential election? If so, when?

As if he had ANY interest in voting GOP in the first place.

99.5% of his post is railing against the GOP and he gives lip service with half a sentence on how he doesn't like Hillary.

I don't mind Kasich, but does he realize that repeating his record in Ohio to every question is tired and old? I know he's trying to establish himself and his resume, but every politician has made positive changes to their state and/or country (just ask them).

Maybe in other years, a great record may have mattered more, but when Donald Trump is getting 1/3 of the vote, Cruz (with a limited time in government and running as an outsider) and Carson (still hovering around 10%) are getting a combined ~60% of the vote, you do need personality to engage voters.

Frustrated Rick Santorum Still Waiting For Go-Ahead From God To Suspend Presidential Campaign

CHARLESTON, SC—Expressing frustration that he had yet to receive any divine counsel on the matter, former Senator Rick Santorum told reporters Friday that he was still waiting for the go-ahead from God to suspend his presidential campaign. “My relationship with God drives every decision in my life, so here I am, still going through the motions eight months into this presidential run, looking for any green light from Him that I can end this thing,” said Santorum, explaining that he truly believed with all his heart that the Lord Almighty would have provided His blessing to pack it in once his national polling numbers dipped below 1 percent. “Seriously, this has gone on long enough. I really should have received His word, or at least some divine sign by now. I’ll just give God until the South Carolina primary and then I’m going to have to do some serious reevaluating.” At press time, God confirmed that He figured Santorum had already dropped out of the presidential race several months ago.

It's sad that even though this is from the Onion it's believable and very likely true.

Well, hispost was about the GOP debate in a GOP thread and you want him to spend most of it complaining about Hillary?

I assume that all the right wing belly aching about Obama's birth records will be directed at Ted Cruz since he was born in Canada? Seems like the outrage is only one sided or am I missing the angst somewhere?

Any word on who filed the lawsuit?

Personally I think it should finally be litigated, get a court ruling, let's get to the bottom of it.

Except that such a suit would eliminate Cruz from this election since it wouldn't be adjudicated before November, and longer than that if it goes to the SC. That's essentially Trump's argument: not that Cruz is disqualified, but that the lawsuit would leave it open to question. And I have to admit it's a fair point.

Well this is the sad thing. It's old fashioned as in maybe 2004 and before to talk about records to show what a politician is about and what we can really expect from them in the future based on what they have done in the past.

I'll give Kasich credit for that, it's where the conversation belongs. But as you say it may not be a winning strategy in the GOP right now.

The conversation does seem to be happening in the Democratic race where at least there has been discussion of what Sanders and Hillary have done as people and public officials.

It is a fair point. I think in the hypothetical you give we would have a president DQ'd from office and then the VP would be president. What would be more screwed up is if say a Florida state or federal court threw Cruz off the ballot in just that state before the election, even if wrong that would be huge by itself.

The answer to that would be yes. Voted for Reagan in 1984.

All that babble only to say you're a Bernie guy. :lmao:
As if he had ANY interest in voting GOP in the first place.

99.5% of his post is railing against the GOP and he gives lip service with half a sentence on how he doesn't like Hillary.
I noticed you didn't tell me where I'm wrong. You probably know that I'm dead on right about all of your party candidates.

Well, hispost was about the GOP debate in a GOP thread and you want him to spend most of it complaining about Hillary?
He's a full blown lefty and he's complaining there are no good GOP candidates to vote for. Shocking, right?

I know you get it, but you're just being deliberately obtuse.
And you are a full blown righty. So that makes me wrong?

And? Are you going to tell me how I'm wrong?

If you're the type of guy that lines up with crazy Bernie on every issue, yeah, you're probably not going think much of the republican candidates.

Duh.

Why exactly do we care if someone is a natural born citizen or not? I would have zero problem voting for someone born in another country, or even someone who lived a good chunk of their life there.

Interesting subplot in the rules making for the upcoming GOP convention:

At one point the committee approved an amendment that would have negated a subsection of the controversial Rule 40, which requires the GOP presidential nominee to have a majority of support in eight different states. Upon realizing what they had done, the committee membership quickly proposed an amendment to the amendment to put the subsection back in play.

...One of the items likely to be tackled at that time is the aforementioned Rule 40. The brainchild of GOP uber lawyer Ben Ginsberg in the 2012 Convention Rules meeting, it was designed to keep supporters of Ron Paul from putting on a display on the convention floor that might distract from the Mitt Romney narrative. Although it achieved this goal, the rule upset many of the party faithful—and the Republicans are apparently still stuck with it.

And in 2016, with 11 presidential candidates still in the race, several influential party officials worry that the eight-state majority requirement is too restrictive. Most presidential candidates win primaries with pluralities instead of majorities. And, if the GOP primary drags on, it could prove harder and harder for one contender to hit the eight-state threshold.

Even Rule 40 itself is open to interpretation. During Thursday’s meeting, RNC General Counsel John Ryder, the interpreter of the rules, argued that a “majority of support” could actually mean the presumptive nominee has demonstrated “enough support” in eight states. His argument: If delegates elected to support a presidential candidate who bowed out of the race moved their support to the presumptive nominee, that could count toward the majority.

That’s where the power of the lower-tier candidates could come into play.

Say, for example, John Kasich stays in the race through Ohio’s March 15 primary. As governor, Kasich is likely to win his home state and its winner-take-all 66 delegates. He’s also polling above 10 percent in New Hampshire, which is the threshold to win some delegates there in its proportional allotment system. Several other states have proportional primaries (with various thresholds to actually win delegates), giving Kasich several opportunities to pick up delegates here and there. Theoretically, he could do well enough to amass 200 or so (1,237 delegates are needed to win the nomination outright).

The same could apply to Jeb Bush. If he stays in the race until Florida’s March 15 primary, there’s a chance he could win his state’s 99 delegates in its winner-take-all contest. With Sen. Lindsey Graham’s endorsement of him on Friday, Bush could be poised to pick up a few in Graham’s home state of South Carolina, which awards its delegates proportionally. Bush could come out of the early primaries with a sizable bloc of delegates without winning anywhere but his home state.

Scenarios like that could make either man a power broker at a convention without a presumptive nominee. In a multi-ballot convention, which hasn’t happened for Republicans since 1948, the candidate who gathers support on the second or third ballots could end up as the nominee.

Kasich, Bush, Chris Christie or any other lower-tier GOP contender who has the money and the will to stay in the primary long enough to amass a few hundred loyal delegates could also prove to be a power broker in deciding a nominee by pushing their support toward one contender in the second round of voting.

- I'm going to guess Trump has little or no support or presence in these rules making committees, these are probably all old line traditional party types.

cool, go change the constitution.
Or just have Congress pass a law that officially defines "Natural Born Citizen" as "any citizen who was born naturally",
I think there already is a federal law on this.

Congress defined "natural born" in 1790, but repealed that definition in 1795. There is no current federal law that defines what "Natural Born Citizen" means.

I have no clue if he is a lefty...Im probably considered one too...despite never voting for a democrat for President.

This cast of GOP candidates is terrible (and I don't like the democratic candidates either)...but you complained that he barely talked about democrats in a post about the GOP debate and his thoughts from that...I know you get that too, but just want to complain more because that is what you do.

I was thinking of this response a little further up thread. I guess I thought I took that to mean there was an active federal law here...

I'd love to hear some Republican thoughts on the Flint water crisis. Would you support criminal charges if it is indeed found the the governor knowingly poisoned those people? I lean left so I have a horse in the race but I like to think I'd lean toward accountability even if it was a Democrat. Is this "wrong" enough to cross party lines?

You still don't get it...not surprised. I guess obtuse is a natural trait with you instead of a deliberate one.

No one is complaining here, just pointing out the obvious fact that several others have also pointed out.
