The shape of the race is right about where I said on page 227. Anyway.

Trump - big win for him tonight. just comical that a dude with literally 0 specifics can bs his way so far but here we are. Fun to hear him talk about ground game as he still clearly has no clue. The longer they are playing bumper cars behind him the more likely the impossible becomes possible.

Cruz - Great result for him. Mid-pack in a state like NH bodes well for the states closer to his politics. Seems pretty clear he has a solid team running his campaign. The bumper cars help him too.

Kasich. Wins but still gonna have a helluva time making it stick. SC is a road game for him. Gotta think he focuses more on NV by default. A lot of bad states for him in the SEC primary. Has to try and stay afloat until the winner take all states like his native Ohio kick in.

Bush. A winner tonight. Almost took 3rd. Beating Christie was a must. Beating Rubio a bonus. SC could be a surprise plus for him being from neighboring Florida. Has the money to hang in. If he can stop stepping on rakes he may blunder into a nomination just yet.

Rubio. Terrible result. No time to beta-test the patch, just going to have hope it's compatible with the firmware. Clearly the impression of him being a well-oiled machine was a bit off. South Carolina could be the Termination of his hopes if he can't find the right algorithm.

Christie. Thanks for playing with and breaking the Rubiobot before you leave. Good luck avoiding bridge traffic.

GOP race

Starting with Ronald Reagan in 1980, S.C. Republicans had a streak of choosing the eventual GOP presidential nominee. That record was broken in 2012, when S.C. voters chose former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich over Mitt Romney.

This year, seven Republicans hopefuls already have announced plans to campaign in South Carolina, including more than 40 events ahead of the party’s Feb. 20 primary.

Trump has ruled S.C. GOP polls since the summer, drawing well from moderates to evangelicals, much to the surprise of pundits. The real estate mogul regularly draws thousands to rallies across the state.

“I have never seen anything like that for any other candidate,” Lexington County GOP chairman Craig Caldwell said. “A lot of people are fed up with national politics, but there’s an entertainment factor.”

Still, Trump cannot afford to come in second in South Carolina, a race where he is forecast to win, Vinson said.

Cruz appears to be in the best position to pull off an S.C. upset, using the same operation to target his base of evangelical Christian and social conservative voters that worked in Iowa.

“This should be natural territory for him,” Furman’s Vinson said. “If he can’t win here, he will have tough time going forward.”

Rubio sits third in South Carolina just ahead of Bush. His campaign has bolstered its S.C. staff as part of a late push and won key endorsements from U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of North Charleston and U.S Rep. Trey Gowdy of Spartanburg.

Caldwell, who has not endorsed a candidate, said Rubio and Cruz have among the strongest ground games in his county, which has the state’s second-largest number of Republican voters.

However, the story in New Hampshire was how Rubio’s opponents, especially those in the establishment, hit the one-term U.S. senator repeatedly over his lack of experience.

“I don’t think South Carolina will decide anything for Republicans,” Vinson said. “It’s more of a race whether it salvages Rubio or makes those concerns linger longer.”

Bush will make a stand in South Carolina, where his father and brother won primaries en route to the White House. The Bush campaign, entrenched in the state for months, will double its number of S.C. staff and consultants after New Hampshire.

Kasich is trying to make some inroads in South Carolina. But the governor never has received more than 4 percent of support in S.C. polls.

Retired Maryland neurosurgeon Ben Carson has raised the most money in the Palmetto State among active candidates, but he has slid to fifth from second — mimicking his results nationally.

In an internal memo circulated late Tuesday evening, the campaign distributed talking points to top campaign aides and surrogates, highlighting lines of attack they plan to take against both candidates.

The memo suggests that Kasich, who campaigned extensively in New Hampshire, does not have a realistic path to winning the Republican nomination.

I doubted his staying power, but this is shaping up to be the perfect storm for him. 4 or 5 guys getting 10-15% and him getting all the rest. As you said earlier, if others don't start dropping out soon it may be too late and the unthinkable could happen. Who's going to take one for the team?

It gives him a solid delegate lead going into the convention, but I don't think it's clear that the vote split will give him the nomination. Most of the primaries are only winner take all with delegates if the candidate crosses 50%.

There's still a decent chance of it coming down to a convention fight, but it's still early.

You and Ezra should keep in mind that there is an armory's worth of ammunition available to stop Trump that has been left virtually untouched so far for political reasons. Once the field is narrowed at the primary and especially the general election level (if that happens), his political opponents will stop focusing on winning over the GOP base and start focusing on winning over undecided and independent voters. At that point the doors will fly open. You'll hear all about the time he supported the death penalty for innocent black and Hispanic teenagers without due process, for example- something no GOP candidate would dare bring up at this stage.

Tump will be destroyed by a remark about the death penalty that hypothetically could be used to abstractly kill some innocent person and how rude that is. Then she will point out how polite she was when she voted to send Americans to actually die in Iraq. Trump should be terrified of all of the nasty things people might say about him, you know when the kid gloves come off.

You kind of missed my point. People do not care. Anything Trump has said or done as a private person is not as impactful as the lies, deceit and mistrust the other candidates have exhibited as public officials.

And you know this how, exactly? Because he's winning the GOP primary race after Iowa and New Hampshire? How many black and Hispanic people do you think have voted for him so far? You think the total cracks double digits? That's not gonna do it when it comes to the general election- Romney won the white vote by 20% in 2012 and still got his ### handed to him.

Voters care about the candidates' pasts. There are hundreds of examples. This would especially be true if something in their past addresses an issue as important as perceived injustice in law enforcement is to minorities in the current political climate. Or did you miss all those protests?

No...I have mocked you for believing somehow that Trump could become a dictator in our system of government. That just so happens to be a position of fear (if I'm being incredibly nice).
