Official 2016 GOP thread: Is it really going to be Donald Trump?? (2 Viewers)

The shape of the race is right about where I said on page 227. Anyway.

Trump - big win for him tonight. just comical that a dude with literally 0 specifics can bs his way so far but here we are. Fun to hear him talk about ground game as he still clearly has no clue. The longer they are playing bumper cars behind him the more likely the impossible becomes possible.

Cruz - Great result for him. Mid-pack in a state like NH bodes well for the states closer to his politics. Seems pretty clear he has a solid team running his campaign. The bumper cars help him too.

Kasich. Wins but still gonna have a helluva time making it stick. SC is a road game for him. Gotta think he focuses more on NV by default. A lot of bad states for him in the SEC primary. Has to try and stay afloat until the winner take all states like his native Ohio kick in.

Bush. A winner tonight. Almost took 3rd. Beating Christie was a must. Beating Rubio a bonus. SC could be a surprise plus for him being from neighboring Florida. Has the money to hang in. If he can stop stepping on rakes he may blunder into a nomination just yet.

Rubio. Terrible result. No time to beta-test the patch, just going to have hope it's compatible with the firmware. Clearly the impression of him being a well-oiled machine was a bit off. South Carolina could be the Termination of his hopes if he can't find the right algorithm.

Christie. Thanks for playing with and breaking the Rubiobot before you leave. Good luck avoiding bridge traffic.

Fiorina. Toast

Carson. Desperately want him to stay in for the sheer comic relief. Don't think SC Evangelicals will see any need to boost him if sticks around.

Gilmore. By this time tomorrow he could be as high as 6th :excited: :pickle:

Pretty sure those are old numbers. I haven't seen a poll done since before the first primary.
Fair enough. I clipped this from the State...

GOP race

Starting with Ronald Reagan in 1980, S.C. Republicans had a streak of choosing the eventual GOP presidential nominee. That record was broken in 2012, when S.C. voters chose former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich over Mitt Romney.

This year, seven Republicans hopefuls already have announced plans to campaign in South Carolina, including more than 40 events ahead of the party’s Feb. 20 primary.

Trump has ruled S.C. GOP polls since the summer, drawing well from moderates to evangelicals, much to the surprise of pundits. The real estate mogul regularly draws thousands to rallies across the state.

“I have never seen anything like that for any other candidate,” Lexington County GOP chairman Craig Caldwell said. “A lot of people are fed up with national politics, but there’s an entertainment factor.”

Still, Trump cannot afford to come in second in South Carolina, a race where he is forecast to win, Vinson said.

Cruz appears to be in the best position to pull off an S.C. upset, using the same operation to target his base of evangelical Christian and social conservative voters that worked in Iowa.

“This should be natural territory for him,” Furman’s Vinson said. “If he can’t win here, he will have tough time going forward.”

Rubio sits third in South Carolina just ahead of Bush. His campaign has bolstered its S.C. staff as part of a late push and won key endorsements from U.S. Sen. Tim Scott of North Charleston and U.S Rep. Trey Gowdy of Spartanburg.

Caldwell, who has not endorsed a candidate, said Rubio and Cruz have among the strongest ground games in his county, which has the state’s second-largest number of Republican voters.

However, the story in New Hampshire was how Rubio’s opponents, especially those in the establishment, hit the one-term U.S. senator repeatedly over his lack of experience.

“I don’t think South Carolina will decide anything for Republicans,” Vinson said. “It’s more of a race whether it salvages Rubio or makes those concerns linger longer.”

Bush will make a stand in South Carolina, where his father and brother won primaries en route to the White House. The Bush campaign, entrenched in the state for months, will double its number of S.C. staff and consultants after New Hampshire.

Kasich is trying to make some inroads in South Carolina. But the governor never has received more than 4 percent of support in S.C. polls.

Retired Maryland neurosurgeon Ben Carson has raised the most money in the Palmetto State among active candidates, but he has slid to fifth from second — mimicking his results nationally.

Carson will stay in the race as long as doing so is revenue-positive. The second he stops netting $, the grift will end.

Carson, Fiorina and Christie have to be out after this.
Carson and Fiorina better get down here and clean up all their crappy signs before they quit.....they are everywhere. I've had to look at them for two weeks.

From politico

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Jeb Bush is already laying the groundwork for a brutal South Carolina campaign against establishment rivals John Kasich and Marco Rubio.

In an internal memo circulated late Tuesday evening, the campaign distributed talking points to top campaign aides and surrogates, highlighting lines of attack they plan to take against both candidates.

The memo suggests that Kasich, who campaigned extensively in New Hampshire, does not have a realistic path to winning the Republican nomination.

“Governor Kasich has little to no chance in South Carolina, and does not have a national organization that can compete,” the memo says. “Kasich has consistently supported gutting the military and has no viable path in the Palmetto State.”

The memo also outlines hard-hitting avenues of attack against Rubio, who for months has been in Bush’s crosshairs: “Senator Rubio has lost momentum and has been exposed as completely unprepared to be president,” it says, repeating an argument that Bush has used frequently against Rubio.

It adds: “Rubio has demonstrated no respect for the nomination process and expects this to be a coronation.”

The memo also claims, "Jeb also did well because he remains the only GOP candidate willing to take on Donald Trump and willing to stand up for conservative values."

"As we saw in the last week, this race is increasingly coming down to who has a proven record and who is best prepared to be Commander-in-Chief, and that is not an unserious reality television star or backbench senator who has never made a tough decision."

I actually think the story of New Hampshire is how well Cruz did.. this was not a state I'd think he would do particularly well in and placing 3rd really shows that his ground-game is probably the best in the business right now...

Not sure how he polls in Nevada but I think he'll do reasonably well in SC and expect that he could do really well in the SEC primary..

Commish has mocked me for being frightened of Donald Trump. But that's wrong. I'm not scared of him. I'm terrified. As is Ezra Klein (read his piece in RCP this morning).

This guy is on a clear path to the nomination and possibly to the presidency. It's Greg Stillson from The Dead Zone. Who's going to stop him?

:lmao:

The Trump speeches are hilariously awesome. They're like an Onion article.
:lmao: yep
Our borders will be incredible!
Watching Trump very nearly caused a fight with my wife, because she was appalled and I just found it hysterical.

I swear, nobody could have scripted a parody of the primary process that is funnier than what we've got.

Trump, !, R.U.B.I.O., Hillary, Carson. Hell, I love Bernie but you also can't understate the comedy of that guy telling you about the quality of the cuisine in the Catskills running for President.

Do we need to have the election? Can't we just renew this for season 2?

You and Ezra should keep in mind that there is an armory's worth of ammunition available to stop Trump that has been left virtually untouched so far for political reasons. Once the field is narrowed at the primary and especially the general election level (if that happens), his political opponents will stop focusing on winning over the GOP base and start focusing on winning over undecided and independent voters. At that point the doors will fly open. You'll hear all about the time he supported the death penalty for innocent black and Hispanic teenagers without due process, for example- something no GOP candidate would dare bring up at this stage.

You should be more scared of Cruz

Cruz is a good speaker, has great delivery, but it was kinda annoying watching him look down at his notes, after watching Trump deliver another great extemporaneous speech.
It's kind of weird that everyone is fixating on Rubio's 25-second canned speech, when Trump's is about 5 seconds, and it doesn't matter what topic. "It's gonna be great, it's gonna be incredible, it's gonna be tremendous." Yeah, no #### he doesn't need notes for that.

where was Trump's wife born? she looks like she might be foreign. wonder if that will be used as some kind of mudslinging..

I doubted his staying power, but this is shaping up to be the perfect storm for him. 4 or 5 guys getting 10-15% and him getting all the rest. As you said earlier, if others don't start dropping out soon it may be too late and the unthinkable could happen. Who's going to take one for the team?

And if anyone can beat Trump, it might be Cruz, who's just as bad or worse.

:scared:

That's more a general election problem for him though.

Silver explains it better than I can, but in order to stop Trump (or Cruz for that matter), one of Rubio, Kasich, or Bush needs to become the de facto alternative by Super Tuesday and with last night's results that probably won't happen. Failing that, there almost has to be only Trump, Cruz, and one other for the Florida and Ohio winner-take all contests on March 15 and with Kasich and the FL guys in the race, that probably won't happen (if Kasich has the money he'll stick around) either.

It's quickly getting to the point with Cruz in the race that stopping Trump (and Cruz for that matter) is going to turn into a long, drawn out process.

Yeah I think that's probably right. That stuff won't come out until the general.

Interesting couple of weeks for the GOP mainstreamers here. They have to unite around someone if they want to stop Trump and Cruz but I don't know how they'll decide among Rubio and Kasich (I think they have to face facts on Bush, he's just not good at this).

It gives him a solid delegate lead going into the convention, but I don't think it's clear that the vote split will give him the nomination. Most of the primaries are only winner take all with delegates if the candidate crosses 50%.

There's still a decent chance of it coming down to a convention fight, but it's still early.

Cruz is the guy who reminds me of Stillson. Been using that comparison almost a year.

Oh no he is right, Hilary will kill him with that. Tump will be destroyed by a remark about the death penalty that hypothetically could be used to abstractly kill some innocent person and how rude that is. Then she will point out how polite she was when she voted to send Americans to actually die in Iraq. Trump should be terrified of all of the nasty things people might say about him, you know when the kid gloves come off.

When do the high tech states start coming into play? Gotta think Rubio is counting on those.

-QG
Such as California? I bet Trump wins that state handily and most of the states in the West. California elected the Terminator for gawd's sake, they will vote for Trump IMHO.

Trump is up 20-30+ points in Florida. Those are 2 of the biggest states, he's a lock for New York. He will win the biggest states IMO. he might not need but 15-20 overall state wins if he has NY, CA, and FL in the bag.

It appears that you don't have the slightest clue what he actually said and who he said it about. Which kind of proves my point- it's a weapon hasn't been fired yet.

This was written prior to his candidacy. Enjoy. And note the date- his original ad appeared in 1989, but the second ad opposing the settlement for the wrongly imprisoned black kids (+ one Hispanic kid) appeared in 2014. Here's those kids now and what they said about Trump's candidacy.

You think that story stays in the background if Trump reaches the general election and there are actual minority votes to be won?

Geez Tim. What do you think the Donald is going to do? Are you going to be curled up in a terrified fetal position and not leave your house for 8 years? Actually that would be cool you would be like the human time capsule. You just stay in your hovel for 8 years and post here. When you come out you will be amazed at all the awesome and feel kind of sheepish that you have been living safeway direct delivery ramen noodles and missed 8 years of winning.

Yeah seriously eggheads like TF think they are going to point out some stupid #### Trump did and people will be aghast that Donald Trump said something insane.

That is like dropping a bombshell that Jerry Springer coached guests and encouraged ridiculous behavior.

I actually listened to Hillaries speech the other night after she got spooged in NH to see if she had anything to offer. She had a could good things but I was kind of turned off how she was reaching out to every group but mine. Then I did a little research on her positions.

Here's a REAL bombshell Hillary Clinton tried to ban video games. #### THAT #####. Hillary will never get a vote from me ever.

And you know this how, exactly? Because he's winning the GOP primary race after Iowa and New Hampshire? How many black and Hispanic people do you think have voted for him so far? You think the total cracks double digits? That's not gonna do it when it comes to the general election- Romney won the white vote by 20% in 2012 and still got his ### handed to him.

Voters care about the candidates' pasts. There are hundreds of examples. This would especially be true if something in their past addresses an issue as important as perceived injustice in law enforcement is to minorities in the current political climate. Or did you miss all those protests?

You kind of missed my point. People do not care. Anything Trump has said or done as a private person is not as impactful as the lies, deceit and mistrust the other candidates have exhibited as public officials.
Voters care about the candidates' pasts. There are hundreds of examples. This would especially be true if something in their past addresses an issue as important as perceived injustice in law enforcement is to minorities in the current political climate. Or did you miss all those protests?
If they did...Bill and Hillary would have never had the careers they did.

Ezra Klein's op-ed mentioned by Tim up thread is probably the best analysis/deconstruction of Trump that I've read/heard.

I am not even sure where I should begin deconstructing this piece.

But fear in the elite and pundit class smells really good to me. The ruling class should fear the peasants from time to time.
Indeed
God, I love the Frinkiac.

Good posting...Its the peasants that have driven Trump to the forefront....Working people are tired of these money sucking losers and the democratic candidates that want to prop them up...The winds of change are blowing....Get a job loser and quit living off the rest of us....

No...I have mocked you for believing somehow that Trump could become a dictator in our system of government. That just so happens to be a position of fear (if I'm being incredibly nice). I have also pointed out your use of fear to form an opinion. I didn't really think you were frightened by Trump the man....just the things you think he's somehow going to be able to pull off.
