*Official 2016 Philadelphia Eagles* - The year of Change (2 Viewers)

The unrelenting negativity of the Philly sports writers has been something to see. Of course if Pederson comes in and goes 12-4 they'll all write about what a bold gambit it was for Howie and Lurie to hire him.
They won't acknowledge it as a good hire by either one of them, ever. He'd have to win a SB.

This dead horse has already taken a beating. Look back in this thread and Chip thread.
Sorry for being late to the party on this. I don't follow the Eagles that closely.

Hindsight is 20/20. I think Chip Kelly has brought some interesting things to the NFL and as Long Ball Larry points out the relationship with Reid had gotten stale. Reid coached the Eagles for a long time. Just seems like a case of not appreciating what you have until its gone.

Eagles fans seems especially difficult to please. Still not as bad as when Marty Schottenheimer was fired from the Chargers for not winning the SB. Kelly did have some success before GM Kelly mucked it up.

I really hope Doug Pederson didn't learn clock management skills from Andy Reid. Still terrible.
Just thinking that, holy crap. Slowest 'hurry up' drive I've ever seen.Over a 5 minute drive. Would have been perfect, if they weren't down by TWO touchdowns.
Was that Andy or Doug? I thought Andy managed the game?
Oh, that's classic Andy.
That was honestly one of the most ridiculous attempts at clock management that I've ever seen. I almost have to assume that the Chiefs as a team collectively forgot that it was the 4th quarter.

:lmao: @ Reid. Some things never change. I enjoyed them wasting 30 seconds as the clock goes to the 2 minute warning holding 3 TOs. BB was having flashbacks to the '05 SB. He must laugh himself to sleep when he thinks about coaching against some of these poorly detail oriented coaches.

Team had declined 3 years in a row and the team had tuned him out. His son had just died of an overdose and the other had legal issues as well. Many thought he would step away from football altogether. It was time and it's not as easy to say we'll they just should have kept Reid. Alot more to it.

At least his QB didn't puke in the huddle this time.

I don't think that the majority of fans wanted Chip out.

This OC is going to be a HC?

He plays small ball, that does not seem like an Eagles offense.
Have you seen kc skill people and qb?
Yeah....not so sure I would base anything off of the small ball he's played in KC. WIth their personel, small ball was appropriate. More importantly, he was EFFECTIVE with it and it fit his personel. Doesn't mean he'll always go small ball in Philly

A good friend of mine is a Niners fan. She's expressing "well what can we do, let's just see how Chip does. At least he's not the GM." The she says, "You Eagles fans must be some of the most OPTIMISTIC fans in the country waiting to win the big one. Hopefully your day will come."

My response, "God bless ya ya must be the first person to ever use "optimistic" to describe an Eagles fan! No....masochistic with a perverse combination of tribalism mixed with schadenfreude would best describe us. To paraphrase Nietche, "when you gaze into the abyss--the abyss gazes also."

First words out of my mouth were this is reliving the SB nightmare. He should be fired for that alone. It's been 20 years and as much as Chip didn't care for TOP, Andy is as bad, or worse, with time management. Brutal.ETA: I'm going to check out KC sports today and see if they're finally understanding why we were over 14 years of it. They're Midwesterners though, they probably don't give that much of a ####.

So awesome.

Andy had his pocket picked to save himself from any challenge issues.

It was exciting, but even being a fan of his and not really wanting chip the coach gone, he was figured out to a certain degree. And you can't possibly make your defense play the equivalent of 2 extra regular season games and expect to survive into the playoffs. I'm curious to see what he can do with Kaep.

Yep, I hate how things are always only judged on the result. Just like a surprise onside kick, the coach is a total genius if they get the right bounce, and an idiot if they don't.

I hope they go 1-15. 1 win vs Dallas.

not sure I like this Spags for DC rumors. His last 2 stops as DC were terrible, though I know he didn't have great personnel. The hiring of Flajole makes this seem likely, though. Seems like we want to be a blend of the Reid Eagles and the Giants of the last 2 years.

It's kind of weird when you think about this HC search (which Didinger crystallized today). Lurie said they wanted an exhaustive search for HC, but in the end they interview 6 people. Two were current Eagles' coaches, one was a former Eagles' coach, and 2 were coaches with the Giants. So it was really quite limited.

I think the 6 total were more than any of the other team. Weren't they?

I'm not sure, but I'm talking more about the scope of the search. Lurie had initially indicated that they would be looking for all kinds of people from everywhere, but in the end it was pretty much the complete opposite.

You're only looking at those interviewed though. They probably "looked" at a lot of other guys like McDermott and Hue. We also "persued" Sumlin from Texas A and M but he showed no interest in coming.

Don't think any college guys got real interviews from ANY of the nfl HC vacancies this year, and given our situation we likely weren't going to grab a college guy.

Six interviews is quite a lot. Who besides Hue/McDermott would you have liked to see given a full interview?

McDaniels or Patricia maybe? Not sure who's doing what in Arozona.

Haven't followed him close enough to feel one way or the other I guess. Rivers looked great last year, not so much this year.
While I'm not overly big on bringing him in either, I don't really get the Rivers statement. He had a better season this year then he did last year.
Plus SD's problems this year (from what I can tell) mostly had to do with injuries to the receiving corp and o-line.

Ya. Rivers had better numbers this year despite having a lot less receiving weapons.

Didn't really follow them this year, just know the team was terrible. Could be a decent hire but why not just keep Shurmur if Bradford is the plan?

I agree I'd rather Shurmur too. But usually these guys coming into their first HC job are pretty excited to get an opportunity to build their team so don't really just want the current guy sticking around.

Not interested in Spags. Again I think everything is agents and insider friends putting out the word for their guy till Doug comes in on Tuesday and says who he wants.

I listened to WIP for about two minutes this morning. All three of the hosts were whining about Pederson. Blaming him for Reid's clock management on Saturday. Saying it's a terrible hire. It's no wonder our fan base is the way it is. The guy hasn't even officially been announced yet and the local media is trying to get all the fans to hate the guy. Just horrible.

Is it? My only issue is that you clip Kelly a week before the season is out to "get a jump" on the search, interview a few guys (a third of which were under your roof already) and then grab a guy that no one was clamoring for. If Pederson is the guy, fine, but why not wait until the play-offs are done and interview EVERYONE you possibly can?

Diddy was on 1210 this morning and said as much-a lot of the interview process is not necessarily to hire a guy but to pick his brain and get ideas/concepts that you may not be considering. Told an anecdote about a team a few years ago that interviewed a guy they simply had no intention of hiring-he wasn't on their radar, they just wanted to talk to him. They brought him in to get a different view point because they had the time and their mentality was, "why NOT interview as many people as possible.". The guy came in, killed his interview, blew them away and convinced them to hire him, even though he was not really ever in their scope. That team was Pittsburgh and the hire was Mike Tomlin.

The point is, jettisoning Chip early says that you are targeting a hot commodity-my guess is they wanted Gase. But after he walks and you don't really talk to anyone else, you look like a smacked-### with no plan. Then Chip gets hired and you double down by looking totally desperate and grabbing Pederson. Why? At that point, what do have to lose? Interview EVERYONE. You don't face the potential of someone sniping Pederson and maybe you uncover someone that really blows you away-Matt Patricia for example. Who knows.

It just looks bad, IMO.

How do we know we didn't get a jump start on the search? What's the criteria for this? Hiring someone? After we got rid of Chip Im sure we were the first team inquiring about other HC's and we had the first interview with any candidate and any team when we interviewed Gase. Gase got full control in Miami. IMHO, it's pretty easy to see why is wasn't the HC here....Oh, and wouldn't it have been awesome to read and listen to how stupid Howie and Lurie were for hiring the first guy they hired? Making the same mistakes by giving another guy full control? Or hiring the next genius?

That's a cool story from Diddy. Im sure many teams interview guys for this same reason. How many strike gold like what happened in Diddy's story?

If you have the guy you want you only look stupid and lost to people who have no clue, which is 99.9% of us. Why are all the HC'ing jobs filled without EVERYONE being interviewed?

How many of these same people criticizing this hire had Chip as a genius and us winning 10-12 games or playing in a SB? Funny how we flock to their every word and they are just as wrong as everyone else. Im usually not a Jaworski fan but he has been the ONLY person I have heard who said the smartest thing--"You wont know what Pederson is until 2-3 years"....Its really that simple

Again, what head start were they trying to get if Pederson was their guy-(which I don't believe)? Literally no one was planning on interviewing him. All signs, IMO, point to a swing and a miss on Gase, followed by some very poor, reactionary decisions.

If they jumped out early, interviewed Gase and signed him up I think most people would be okay with it. There would be a feeling that they had a clear plan, targeted the guy they wanted and made quick, smart decisions to lock him up. This is the complete opposite of that. As soon as Gase is out they should be interviewing a ton of people. The very reason for jumping out early is no longer viable option. At that point, take your time and be sure you are making the right decision. Why would you not interview Jackson? McDermott? Patricia? McDaniels? There's a host of other guys out there that are more qualified than Pederson. We didn't talk to any of them. Gase was hired by Miami without interviewing a ton of people because he was the consensus top pick in this year's coach search-evidence of why we clipped Kelly a week early.

Again, I'm not saying that Pederson won't be good, because he may be and you're right-no one really knows. I thought the Jaws interview was pathetic. I love Jaws, but that was the worst example of a sell job I've ever heard. Telling the Philly fan base to "calm down" and give it 2-3 years? Really Jaws? What an absurd statement-this is obviously reality, but telling the fans to just be positive about this selection would not go over well in most places, least of all Philly.. FWIW, he said during that interview that they'd internally identified twenty names of potential guys they were interested in. Twenty. They interviewed six, two of which were Shurmer and Duce.

You're starting your first sentence saying you don't believe it and than follow-up with something that reads like you do believe he was their guy the entire time. IF you truly don't believe he was their guy the entire time, than what they did was interview more HC candidates than everyone else, took their time and got the best candidate in their eyes.

I disagree completely with the second paragraph. For starters, as Ive mentioned before Gase got full control. We simply couldn't compete with that. If we didn't offer him full control Im sure he would want to see what else is out there. I'm also sure they probably had a damn good idea what he wanted, from his agent, probably within hours of Chip being gone, if not beforehand. Gase was hired by Miami because he said "I want XX, Y & Z" and they said "Done". Secondly, Chip was the consensus top choice a few years back. Im cool with not making the same mistake twice.

Jackson also got full control in Cleveland, and we tried to schedule and interview with him. McDermott, McDaniels and Patricia COMBINED for 1 interview I believe. Patricia (Im not 100% sure on this) was scheduled for one but said he'd only take it if they were eliminated.

Jaws statement is only absurd in this city. No gray in this place. No one has to be positive, or negative. How about we just wait and see if he's as awful as Andy was when he was first hired?

I also see our "intelligent" fan base was back at it again this past weekend. A week ago every single person here knows it's Andy that calls the plays and runs the entire KC offense. After we lock in on Pederson we now replace Andy with him. I love this place.

You are correct, and I certainly am not saying that it was a bad or good final decision.

This article also indicates that they started with a list of 20-25 names, then discussed and went through a vetting process in order to determine who to bring in for interviews.

I'm not sure where I wrote that I think he was their guy. I think Gase was. I think they fired Chip early so they could get the jump on Gase and sign him before anyone else got to him. I think that for whatever reason, maybe full control, it didn't work out and they were completely unprepared to move forward. They did some placating interviews but didn't do what I would call an exhaustive search. Upon the news that Chip was signed by 49ers, we get news here that Pederson will be the head coach. I'm sorry you disagree with me but the timing of everything makes it look to me like they hired Pederson as a consolation prize and only did so because the guy they ####canned went out and got hired before his replacement.

I think you are wrong on the Gase thing-had they hired him right out of the gate, it would be an indication that they have a plan. The fan base would be excited about that.

As it stands, they fired Chip early to interview two current employees, Gase, Coughlin, McAdoo and then hire Pederson right after Chip was hired by the niners.

Maybe I'm wrong but I'll bet that McDermott, McDaniels and Patricia will interview once the playoffs are over.

Jaws' statements anywhere are ludicrous. Its got nothing to do with this being Philly.

I was saying that if you didn't believe Pederson was their guy than they would have seemed to do an exhaustive search for their HC...which is what you said you wanted....

Do you think or believe that any of these guys talk to each other or agents? Like ANY team would only have just one plan and go into in interview without the knowledge of what a guy wanted???? Come on now....

I'm going to take the us hiring Doug just cause Chip got a job as a joke...like you're F'ing with me on that one right?

Maybe I'm wrong but I'll bet that McDermott, McDaniels and Patricia will interview once the playoffs are over.

not sure I like this Spags for DC rumors.

We also "persued" Sumlin from Texas A and M but he showed no interest in coming.Don't think any college guys got real interviews from ANY of the nfl HC vacancies this year, and given our situation we likely weren't going to grab a college guy.

Six interviews is quite a lot. Who besides Hue/McDermott would you have liked to see given a full interview?

That was the excuse given but its very unusual to fire a guy with a week left. Something obviously made Lurie so mad that he couldn't wait 5 more days to fire Chip. They can't just come out and say that "Chip pissed me off so I fired his ###" though. That looks worse.

I don't care who they hire because a lot like with free agents and draft picks, we know less than they do. Especially with coaching searches because we have no idea who translates to good coaching material and if they even fit what the Eagles are looking for. They targeted Doug early. They researched the other top guys. Brought a couple in for interview. They interviewed Doug and felt he was what they thought they wanted. So why go through 20 interviews if you found the guy you want? Would it have made people any happier if they waited for McDermott and McDaniels, if they knocked on Gruden and Cowhers door begging for an interview, if they turned over every top conference college coach and former NFL super bowl winner just to appease the fanbase when they say Doug's their guy? Why waste the resources.

I'm not trying to be dense here, but to be clear RE: Pederson-I do not think he was their target. I do not think they did anywhere near an exhaustive search. That is my issue. If you tell me that Pederson just was such an amazing interview that they put their pencils down and said, "Eureka, no need to continue looking!" well, okay. I have a hard time believing that. If I don't believe that then I have a hard time believing that there was a reason to hire him when they did, foregoing all other possible candidates. That's all I'm saying. He wasn't a hot commodity. There was no reason to lock him up ASAP. Waste resources? Isn't that the whole point of resources? This is kind of an important hire, no?

Regarding your second point, if they knew that Gase had to have full control, and they knew they wouldn't give it to him, why bother bringing him in?

I'm not saying they hired Pederson because Chip got hired and I think you know that. I'm saying that it looks like a desperation move in the context of it all: firing Chip a week early to "get ahead of the curve", having Gase interview here and him WALKING AWAY, interviewing few legit contenders, having one of them pull himself out of the running then unofficially announcing the (IMHO) uninspired hiring of Pederson literally right after Chip gets hired. It just has a bad look to me. You obviously don't see it that way; that's cool. I hope he's half the coach (figuratively and literally) that Andy was while he was here and I'm eating crow next season.

Giants shooting for a QB to throw 8 TDs against them in a game this year instead of only 7?

Thank God the Giants denied permission. He was one of the worst in the league. Bring on Schwartz or Petine.
