Official 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

Anyone get the feeling the Steelers are in the Bengals heads?
What if they never thought Jackson or Billings were any good and just tricked their arch rivals?  That would be priceless.

I think based on who's left we should take a LB and WR at least with our last 3 picks.

Based on how quickly the Steelers made their selections I think it's not only possible but likely. But when Bengals pick two players linked to Steelers in a lot of drafts and add a Pitt Panther I just can't help but think THEY think  they got one over on the Steelers, like the Ravens thought they did last year with Max Williams.

They did put in all of their picks really quickly.  I'm not sure if it's because we had those guys ranked way higher, or if it was just their board.  They like to say that there's really no debate on draft day.  When it's their turn it's already a forgone conclusion who they'll take since they just go by the board.

A lot of people are saying that the Steelers reached on players for need (I think it looks like they did too) but if you believe them, they just had these players ranked higher than most other people and it wasn't based "purely" on need.

Steelers tried to trade into the fifth round to get a RB or even QB, but all the guys they liked were taken.
Wonder if they wanted Paul Perkins or Alex Collins, and if they wanted Nate Sudfield.

Who is left who we want?  Scooby (thought he'd be gone in round 3), Driskel, Jeremy Cash (HOW IS HE STILL HERE?!), Kenny Lawler, Charone Peake, Matakevich.  Also, Keith Marshall?  He got injured in college, but he's crazy fast and shows flashes of talent.

Anyone else not excited about playing Kenneth Dixon twice a year?  Ugh.

And there goes Driskell. So no QB as far as Im concerned. Not that they would have taken him anyway.

Maybe a late pick trade for buried guy on some team'so depth chart? A guy like Tom Savage?  Brian Hoyer? Maybe players like those guys will become free agents between now and training camp.

Two more projects. Feeney has phenomenal athleticism but is going to have to add 15 pounds of muscle to have a prayer. I thought maybe they were going to move him inside to cover him up, but Porter says no. OLB. I don't see it right now.

Ayers had great productivity but he's 5' 9", 180 and ran 4.7 at the combine. If he makes the roster, it will be as a kick returner.

I love the Matakevich pick. LOVE it. OK, he may be Rudy Ruettiger, but how can you not root for this guy? I think he's going to make the team.

I give up on us trying to find a game breaking returner. We always miss. This is another miss. He has no chance. Wasted pick.

*reverse jinx!
Probably, but devil's advocate is that at least he's not just a 4.3 guy, he's a very accomplished returner with open field vision. I don't know if he's fast enough to break off a lot of TD returns, but he could be a guy that can catch the ball reliably, make one or two guys miss, and enhance field position. And get AB off of the punt return team for good. I don't know if that's enough for a roster spot, though. He'd have to be able to contribute on coverage teams and also play the slot in a pinch if he's going to get the WR5 spot. With Bryant suspended, that's a wide open position though, he'll be competing with the Shakim Phillips' of the world, so he has a puncher's chance at least.

Really like BOTH LB picks.  Fenney may never be more than a "big Nickel S/LB", but those are quite valuable in today's NFL.  He can do some work in subs and be an asset on teams?  That's totally valuable from a 6th rounder.  Matakevich is just one of those guys that finds the ball.  He's short, he's slow, and he's not that strong....but he does nothing other than make plays vs. run and pass.  Hard to hate on that from a 7th rounder.

Ayers is pretty much a throw away in an attempt to get Tony Brown off returns from where I'm sitting.  If it works, great.  If it doesn't, it was a 7th so who cares?  This is where you take shots on guys who can only do one thing and not in the third(Looking at you, Dri).

i like the overall draft... really like tyler, motor guy will be good on special teams... ayers,, i cant seem them just keeping him as a punt returner, hes gonna have to do something at wr to stick

I'm really hoping that Jarvis Jones has a fantastic year.  In 2014 he seemed off to a great start before he messed up his wrist.  He's also very solid as a run stopper.  If he can somehow turn into a viable pass rusher this offseason and generate 6-8 sacks this year I think we should resign him to a reasonable deal.  Having him, Dupree, and a pass rushing specialist could be a good rotation as Dupree seems like the real deal against the Run and Pass.

Maybe Feeney can be that specialist for us?

The OLB spot has absolutely no depth beyond '16. Moats is JAG and likely gone in a year, Silverback is done after this season, Jarvis likely is headed elsewhere. Not much of note on the practice squad. Beyond this year, it's Dupree and that's about it.  FO is going to have to pull some rabbits out of a hat this off season.

Assuming they hope one of the rabbits is Feeney.

But, yeah.  And it won't be just depth come '17 if Jones leaves.  They'll need someone starter quality.

I assume so too, but I just don't see it. When his name was called, I was thinking he might be a safety/ILB hybrid, not a 3-4 end. He's 225 pounds and doesn't have a huge variety of moves. Good in coverage but can't set the edge. I'm really not sold on his ability to hold down one of those spots.

Yeah, unless they have other options Jones will be back. They're just taking that he won't blow up and cause them to have to pony up big bucks. If he underperforms the $8M they would have owed they make out okay.

I stood next to Jarvis during camp last year. He's definitely not 225 now. 240 is more like it. He showed some progress but not enough to warrant $8m. Good against the run, not enough pass rush. I'm still hopeful but like Cortez Allen (who I was also hopeful for) this is it.

Probably re-sign Jones.  Who is gonna pay for what he's done?  (That just means he has a 10+ sack year.)
I hope he does, it would mean good things for the Steelers 2016 season.

If Jones has a mediocre season they'll likely be able to resign him (assuming they want to) for a reasonable amount.   If Jones has a breakout season they can try to negotiate a new contract or franchise him.   If he stinks or gets injured they can walk away.

Overall I think they're playing it the best way possible.

Damn! Just read an article on steelersdepot: Decastro is the only draft pick remaining from that 2012 draft now. That sucks. Beachum was a good pick but is gone. Spence had the injury and is now gone. Rest of the draft was terrible.

Agree.  Small guys don't last at 3-4 OLB.  I think about 250 is the minimum to be a solid EDGE guy.  I'm thinking a backup nickel or dime LB, ST guy and hope he puts on 10-15 lbs to play inside.  Let's be honest, he was a late 6th.  Not like we're banking on those picks anyways.  Hope for the best, and like a lot of this draft, he may turn into something good in a couple years.
