Official 2016 Pittsburgh Steelers Thread (1 Viewer)

bump Fitzgerald Toussaint

in all seriousness, I am so sick of these idiotic players. I mean, "you stay away from these certain things and we will pay you millions of dollars" is it really that hard??? Follow the rules for 5-7 years and live the rest of your life how you want. Beyond stupid.

It won't matter.  This will almost certainly be his last year in Pittsburgh now.  They aren't going to give him anywhere near the cash he feels he's worth when he's one toke away from a full year suspension.  Especially with the RB talent that will be available in the '17 draft.

That DeAngelo Williams contract looks like a massive, massive steal now.
Yep.    The only way he is with the team next season is if he has a great 2016 and they slap the franchise tag on him.  I find it very hard to believe that Bell is going to get a long term deal with Steelers now.

I find it very hard to believe that Bell is going to get a long term deal with Steelers now.
Yeah, I'd wager it's pretty unlikely.

I had doubts they'd use the tag on him even before this honestly, since I think the Steelers(probably correctly) view the RB position as extremely volatile with a very short shelf life.  It's not usually worth sinking that kind of money into one guy at the position unless you're talking "generational talents."  Throw that all on top of his injury history AND now the drug stuff?  I expect he'll be getting the "good luck in your future endeavors" speech at the end of the season unless he was willing to sign a ridiculously friendly deal(and obviously stays clean/punctual/whatever).  Some other team will ignore the red flags though and back up a dump truck full of money at his house.  Quite certain of that.

That said, with the amount of talent slated to come available in the '17 draft, it's a bad year for a RB to have any sort of question mark, let alone two or three.

(from 2015)

God Help Us, Are The Steelers The Smartest Team In The NFL?

With 4:20 left in the first quarter of a scoreless game, Ben Roethlisberger hit Heath Miller for a touchdown on a quick turnaround route and immediately turned to his sideline and signaled to go for two

They roll at 4:20...

(4:20 - 1st) Heath Miller Pass From Ben Roethlisberger for 2 Yrds TWO-POINT CONVERSION ATTEMPT. B.Roethlisberger pass to A.Brown is complete. ATTEMPT SUCCEEDS.

Can you imagine the matchup nightmares a lineup of Brown, Bryant, Green with Bell coming out of the backfield is going to cause?  I really think that group would rival any group in the HISTORY of the NFL as difficult to matchup against and good luck if Wheaton can be more consistent or Coates steps up.
Talk about dying dreams. Also read yesterday that as of June when he was last seen that  Ladarius was not moving so well.

So what FA RB's are out there to kick the tires on: Knowshon Moreno, Ray Rice, Ahmad Bradshaw, Piere Thomas...
I would think a rookie FA or maybe a vet minimum backup without a lot of miles on the odometer would be more likely. I don't see them adding any significant salary here. It's only 4 games.

4 games is a quarter of a season. Touissant is an ok, emergency guy and Deangelo is what? 34, 35? You don't roll into a season like that.

Turned 33 in April. Have to make it through:

@ WAS

vs. CIN

@ PHI

vs. KC

They cut undrafted FA RB Christian Powell in May but still have rookies Brandon Johnson and Brandon Brown-Dukes on the roster. If they knew this was coming for the last month it seems like they would've signed somebody already. Training camp starts in five days.
Teams usually don't respond until the suspension is in black and white. If he wins his appeal there is no need to bring anyone in and of the backs I mentioned and are out there they are all fliers with only a modest ceiling.

What are the odds he wins his appeal? Maybe 2%? He was suspended for a drug infraction just last year (and had it reduced a game). I don't see Goodell showing a lot of mercy.

I'm not disagreeing with you here, just stating that if they feel the need to sign somebody they'd be foolish to wait. Maybe they like the Brandons
Technically he was suspended for a DWI, it just happened to be for weed, not alcohol.  Also, under the new susbstance-abuse policy, Goodell doesn't get to hear the appeal, a neutral arbitrator does.

That being said, I doubt he wins the appeal; he'd probably need to win on some sort of technicality, which I haven't read any reports of.

Maybe there's excusable reasons to miss a drug test per NFL guidelines and he'll bring those to light and win the appeal?  (Not holding my breath)

Notification and Collection Procedures:Specimen collections occurring at a Club facility, stadium or scouting combinevenue will be conducted at the discretion of the Medical Advisor and Collection Vendor without advance notice to the Player. Upon notification that he has been selected for testing, the Player shall furnish a specimen
to the authorized specimen collector immediately or as soon as possible, but in no event more than three (3) hours following notification. Until the specimen is provided, the collector shall maintain specific knowledge of the Player's whereabouts and the Player may not leave the premises for any reason. If the collector reasonably believes that the Player is evading testing, he shall report the matter to the Collection Vendor and/or Medical Advisor for disciplinary review.

For specimen collections occurring away from the Club facility, the Medical Advisor and Collection Vendor may in their discretion contact the Player by telephone or voicemail or text message to notify him that he has been selected. Following notification, Players in the Intervention Program shall furnish a specimen within three
(3) hours.

The Medical Advisor may consider a Player's prompt, consistent provision of specimens in determining future testing frequency. To prevent evasive techniques and ensure that specimens are accurately attributable to the selected Player, specimens will be collected, stored and transported to the SAMHSA Lab according to the protocols referenced in Section 1.1.6.

...

Failure to Appear for Testing: The Medical Advisor will be responsible for scheduling all tests and for ensuring that Players are notified when individual testing will take place. A Player who fails to appear for required testing without a valid reason as determined by the Medical Advisor will be subject to discipline as set forth in Appendix E.

...

Failure to Cooperate; Attempt to Manipulate: A Player who fails to cooperate fully in the Testing process as determined by the Medical Advisor or provides a dilute specimen will be treated as having a Positive Test Result. In addition, a deliberate effort to substitute or adulterate a specimen; to alter a test result; or to engage in prohibited doping methods will be treated as a Positive Test and may subject a Player to additional discipline.

...

1.6 Location Information and Notice
Players who are in the Intervention Program are required to provide the Medical Advisor and Medical Director with an address and telephone number where they can be reached at all times, and the Medical Advisor shall attempt to notify the Player using the method that is reasonably calculated to provide notice to the Player in a timely manner.

Any notice required to be provided to a Player under this Policy will be deemed to have occurred: (1) when delivery is made via Federal Express or similar means of overnight delivery to the address provided by a Player (no signature required); or (2) when a voicemail or text message is left at the telephone number provided by a Player.

The Management Council is not required to establish individual receipt by the Player. Any Player in the Program may choose to authorize notice of his status in the Program to his Certified Contract Advisor and/or the NFLPA. If the Player chooses to notify his Certified Contract Advisor and/or the NFLPA about his status in the Program, the designated recipient will be copied on Program correspondence to the Player, except for Program correspondence that only includes medical information (e.g., a clinical advisory note).

The NFL Management Council and the NFLPA shall be promptly notified whenever an event occurs that will subject a Player to discipline in any Intervention Stage.

...

Procedures for Failure to Appear for Testing
All Players in an Intervention Stage who become unavailable for Testing due to travel, temporary or permanent change of residence, prior commitments, or otherwise, are required to notify the Medical Advisor in advance of such unavailability so that the Medical Advisor can schedule accordingly if such request is reasonable. If a Player fails to provide the Medical Advisor with an address and telephone number where he can be contacted, and, as a result, such Player cannot be contacted when the Medical Advisor requires that a Test be administered or the Player cannot be contacted at the address and telephone number provided to the Medical Advisor, the Player's failure to notify the Medical Advisor or inability to be contacted will be subject to discipline as set forth below.

In addition, Players who are not in an Intervention Stage but who are selected for Pre-Season Testing must present and provide a specimen within the time periods set forth in Section 1.3.3 of this Policy. Players who fail to do so without a valid reason as determined by the Medical Advisor will be subject to discipline as set forth below.
When a Player fails to appear for testing, the Parties, in consultation with the Medical Advisor, will determine the nature of the failure and the degree of the Player's culpability. If the failure to appear is determined to have been a deliberate effort to evade or avoid testing, then the failure will be treated as a Section 1.5 violation, subject to appeal. For other cases, the failure will be treated as follows:

Unless a warning is issued, the first time a Player fails to appear for testing, he will be fined up to $25,000 under his NFL Player Contract and will be placed into the Intervention Program.

A second failure to appear for testing will result in a fine of two-seventeenths (2/17) of the Paragraph 5 amount in his NFL Player Contract.

A third violation will result in a four (4) game suspension without pay.

All disputes in connection with these procedures may only be reviewed as "Other Appeals" as set
forth in Section 4.2 of the Policy. The discipline issued pursuant to these procedures shall not be dependent upon the Player's program status within the Intervention Program, nor shall a Player be advanced to the next Intervention Stage based solely upon a violation of these procedures. A violation of these procedures may, however, be a basis for resetting a Player's discharge date at the discretion of the Medical Director.

Nothing in these procedures shall be meant to include failures to cooperate with testing other than the failure to appear for testing within the applicable time period. Deliberate efforts to substitute or adulterate a specimen, alter a Test Result, evade testing or engage in prohibited doping methods will be considered Positive Tests and will be subject to the discipline set forth in Sections 1.3.3 and 1.5 of the Policy.

So now we have to see if changing your phone number is a valid excuse for missing a test.  There should be some way to confirm that the player was notified, like an email with a "read" receipt.

This is pretty clear.

It's the players responsibility that they have all the correct information to contact him.

See you in week 5 Lev, if your knees ready.

Well, he says that he gave them his updated information, and they just used the old info.  In that case, he fulfilled his responsibility...

Agreed; I'd be shocked if he wins this, unless there's more info we dont have.

See you in week 5 Lev, since your knee's already ready now.

That is a lot of procedure there and I think it is much more likely that Le'veon screwed up than the NFL.

I'll be ecstatic if he isn't suspended or it is reduced but I have already resigned myself to the fact that he'll be gone until week 5.

I'm not so sure.  It seems like the NFL screws up just as often as Bell...

The NFL or Bell or his agent should have evidence that the updated contact info was sent.
True.

Anybody know if some unknown is lighting up camp already?  Haven't heard too much out of Steelers training camp other than Harrison is his same bada** self and that Shazier looks like a monster.

I heard that Sammie Coates had a really good practice the other day and a productive camp thus far.

Wexell tweeting the praises of Hargrave and Jerald Hawkins so far.
I can only imagine Harrison, Heyward, Hargrave, Tuitt, and Dupree rushing the QB, only to have Shazier fly through the pile and knock the crap outta him.  This defense could be fun to watch, if the secondary can keep up.

Not really.

Mostly about looking good as a rusher vs. not so good vs. the run, but that was pretty much the book on him out of college, soon....nothing much new there I guess.

He seems destined for a platoon situation with McCullers, where McCullers will man the nose in the base 3-4 front and Hargrave and probably Ricardo Mathews will play inside of Tuitt and Heyward in nickel packages.  Which last year, I read somewhere, they utilized on roughly 70% of the defensive snaps.  Hargrave could be in for a pretty significant workload from jumpstreet.

That's probably how they need to use him.  Hopefully they will.  Although, I think Heyward has been pretty good getting a middle push when they've slid him over(Tuitt not terrible either) on Nickel/Dime downs too.  Middle rush is THE most important kind of pressure a D needs to generate, in my mind, so I hope they don't just say "#### it!" with using Hayward/Tuitt as interior rushers.

Unless Hargrave just turns into a pocket-destroying beast.  Then sure, say "#### it!"

Per Rapaport and Aditi K. from NFL Network

Lisfranc injury for Golson, could keep him sidelined for up to 12 weeks according to Aditi.
Son of a #####.

If it's a lisfranc, I wouldn't be remotely surprised to see him go to IR.  Get ready to trade a 2017 late round pick for another rental corner.

Quickly looking at FA pool for CB, best options are Chris Culliver and Antonio Cromartie - wouldnt be surprised if they gave either one of those guys a call.

Other guys who may be available via FA:

Trumaine McBridge (Giants)

Alan Ball (Bears)

Brandon Browner (Saints)

Josh Wilson (Lions)

Tarell Brown (Patriots)

Josh Gordy (Giants)

Cortez Allen (hey remember that guy!)

Phillip Adams (Falcons)

Jalil Brown (Colts)

Brandon Harris (Titans)

Damn that is an ugly list.  Culliver is probably the best of the bunch but is a bad character guy.   I don't think Cromartie has anything left in the tank.

They specifically said he was going to be a DE (pass rush) rotation guy from day 1. Everything else he will need to learn and earn.

But they had big hopes/plans for him to help keep the pass rush healthy late in games by spelling Heyward and Tuitt throughout the contests, at the least.
