OFFICIAL 2016 Training Camp & Preseason: News & Tidbits Thread (1 Viewer)

Some random things I will be watching for in tonight's preseason games:

New England at Carolina:  Will Jimmy Garoppolo start for the Pats, and is he ready to fill in for Brady to begin the season?  I will also be watching New England's O-line.  With Dion Lewis out awhile and Brady to miss the first four games, they really need to step up, and I don't know that they are up to the task.  Obviously, the running game will be of interest (I would like another good look at Gaffney, and DJ Foster really intrigues me), but the receiving corps has a new look.  Malcolm Mitchell is the guy I would have been most interested to see, but he is working his way back from injury.  On the Carolina side of the ball, I am most interested to see Devin Funchess.  Can he continue to build on a strong offseason?

Buffalo at Washington:  Buffalo's defense has had a rash of injuries.  Can Rex Ryan work some magic with this unit?  I am eager to see how the battle at RB behind McCoy shapes up. Sammy Watkins should make his debut tonight,  and while he may not play long, I am hoping to see him get some action.  For Washington, I am most excited to see if Keith Marshall can step up his game.  So far, he has been a disappointment, but I still have high hopes for him.

Pittsburgh at New Orleans:  The battle at receiver after Antonio Brown is interesting.  Sammie Coates was a guy I had hoped would step up, and I thought he might surpass Wheaton on the depth chart.  That hasn't happened.  I will be watching both Coates and Eli Rogers tonight with interest.  Speaking of receivers I want to see, beyond Michael Thomas, who I am excited to see more of, Tommylee Lewis is an exciting mighty mite, and I hope to see him with the ball tonight.

Cleveland at Tampa Bay:  All eyes will be on the return of Josh Gordon and the debut of Corey Coleman.  Beyond that, I am also excited to see the continued development of RGIII and Terrelle Pryor, and the return of Andrew Hawkins.  I have been very high on Jameis Winston, but he has been inconsistent this preseason.  I hope to see him play with more consistency tonight.  I will also be watching to see if placekicker Roberto Aguayo can snap out of his funk.  Speaking of needing to snap out of a funk, can Kenny Bell live up to offseason projections?  Finally, I will be watching the battle at Tight End.  Austin Seferian-Jenkins has been working his way back into the team's good graces, and a strong performance tonight could fetch him a return to the starting lineup.

Green Bay at San Francisco:  The battle at wideout behind Nelson and Cobb is yet unsettled.  I had hoped Jeff Janis might rise to the occasion, but even before his injury, he was struggling.  Jared Abbrederis and Davante Adams are the top candidates for the number three job.  Abbrederis intrigues me the most, but I am also interested to see Ty Montgomery.  The other Green Bay "receiver" I am interested to see tonight is Jared Cook.  I think he is being undervalued.  For San Francisco, all eyes will be on the battle at QB.  I would count it a disappointment if Blaine Gabbert holds off the challenge from Kaepernick.  I have to believe Chip Kelly's offense will run better with Colin Kaepernick at the helm.  Vance McDonald could end up a quality fantasy TE, but he seems to get little respect.  I am eager to see Bruce Ellington, but I have not heard his status for the game.  Finally, I am probably among only a small handful of those eager to see Mike Davis.  He flashed in week 1 of the preseason, but a pair of drops last week won't help his cause.

Redskins RB Rob Kelley rushed for 51 yards on 12 carries and caught his lone target for a loss of one in Friday night's preseason game.
His most impressive work came in blitz protection, where Kelley stoned several would-be rushers on the Bills' defense. Kelley is a between-the-tackles grinder with 4.68 speed, but he suddenly has intriguing theoretical opportunity with Matt Jones (shoulder) and Keith Marshall (elbow) both on the shelf. We suspect Washington is going to add a back before or at final cuts.

Rookie Tyler Ervin was the No. 2 back behind Lamar Miller in the Texans' third preseason game.
It's not the first time Ervin has worked second behind Miller this preseason, though we weren't sure the previous time was notable because Ervin's appearance was brief. He logged the second most playing time with the ones on Saturday night, seeing more work in the Brock Osweiler group than Alfred Blue. It's not inconceivable Ervin would lead the Texans in touches if Miller went down. That possibility makes Ervin worth consideration in deep re-draft leagues. On Sunday, Ervin rushed twice for 13 yards and had a 20-yard reception.

Jordy Nelson with a crazy one-handed grab over Rob Daniel along sideline. Welcome back to 11-on-11 work.
