*** Official 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season Thread *** (2 Viewers)

in NC i am finding all resources were sent to Tx.  no generators to be found.  best i could do is rent one starting monday for 1 week at $320- 6Kw.  i have gas.

last year for some odd reason i bought flood insurance.  feel good about that decision now.

Temperature must have dropped 15-20 degrees overnight in SE LA.  You can see on people's faces how relieved they are.
I know it's just Facebook ... but on Tuesday, my wife's Facebook page was full of New Orleanians bragging about how they already booked hotel rooms in Shreveport and how Irma's path looked just like Katrina's. Haven't been to the grocery since Sunday, so I don't know if there had been a run on the usual hurricane provisions locally ... kinda doubt it.

So the hotel in Pensacola left a voice mail for me to confirm my reservation thru Travelocity. I'm supposed to have until Saturday to cancel. I am going to ignore it for now. I'm a probable to leave but don't want to be on I10 in the madness unless I have to.
Hwy 90 worth it? It'll take you to Pensacola from Jax, but I don't know what local conditions would be like (traffic in all the towns 90 passes through, etc.).

South FL peeps: If you want to flee north to Orlando, there are rooms available at Bahama Bay in Davenport. I have my mom, wife, kids and dog holed up in s 3-bedroom condo with a full kitchen for $100/night.

I thought about that also. Not just traffic, it would also be ? hours in car with 4 others including MIL and her boyfriend. Then 3 days in hotel with nervous wife wondering what is going on.

Of ALL the states to use Contra Flow, You would THINK the giant ####### North-South peninsula that has the highest rate of hurricane landfall and only ONE path to flee to safety would be a prime candidate for this sort of thing....
Something something small government something something taxes something something

NOAA update looks like it not only held the Eastern path but wobbled a hair more that way (compared to their 8 AM version).

Does it seem like it's forecasted speed (not wind) is slowing down, or is it just me?

my sister got through for a couple minutes.  everyone is ok.  devastation is the word she used.  worse than marilyn.  the roof of her house is gone.  she hasn't been there yet, to assess the complete damage

AFAIK first state with Contra Flow was SC. Drove from JAX to Columbia in 13.5 hours for Floyd in 99. Made it back in 5.5 and they had opened up 26 for contra flow.

yes, he's fine.  they have a secondary cottage on the property that is new cement construction, but 1/3 is glass walled.  it and they are ok.  the main house lost it's roof, so whatever they left inside is probably toast. my sister is a long time local and knows the drill, so i'm sure she removed valuable/expensive things.  no word on cars yet.

the navy is send a medical ship to evacuate the hospital/s as some of them have received significant damage.

Glad she's OK. The pics you posted look beautiful. While I'm sure rebuilding is going to be awful, I couldn't imagine a nicer place to rebuild in.

Latest GFS model trended slightly west, is dangerously close to Miami, then rides the coast of Florida and makes landfall around Savannah. This is pretty close to the Euro model run from last night.

S.C. Gov. Henry McMaster is scheduled to give a briefing at 2 p.m. today about the State of South Carolina's plans for closings and evacuations in preparation for Hurricane Irma.

I've come to grips with the possibility that I might not have a house by Monday. Stuff can be replaced anyway.

While things will not be pleasant in Lakeland, if the current track verifies I think you will be okay for the most part (tornadoes can be a problem though).  Hopefully, you shouldn't see Cat 5 or even Cat 4 winds there. My mom is in Seffner, not too far away from you but further from the path and she is not going anywhere, and at present I am not to worried about her. Obviously if things shift west, that changes.

I got my brother wasted and gave him $10 to walk up to her and say..

"Hey. I got the forecast for tonight. Two warm fronts coming together - chance of scoring......one hundred percent. Uh huh huh huh." (Butt-head) She looked at him like he was an alien. The entire table is dying laughing.. she just says : "Are you ----ing serious?" and walks away.
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Anyone on the east coast of FL, I'm sorry.  I made the mistake of buying a house there, so now we're going to have a major hurricane burning the coast every year for eternity.

Jose is forecast to be category 3+ and may go right over Barbuda again.
Two major hurricanes in less than a week. Place may be wiped clean by the end of it.

an accounting

We are currently staying on gift hill from the lower campus. It's called the man cave and it's next to what's left of John and Stacy's place. It's a dry studiospace with one bathroom and is dry. How it withstood the winds and tornadoes we don't know.

We are all lucky to be alive. There are trees and power lines down everywhere and we need to be very careful walking around to stay safe. What we have before us is a complete catastrophe right now.

There are 8 total people and 5 dogs. Reception is limited and I can only use my phone so much. We have limited power sources.

We are awaiting the sun to rise so we can get to work. We are going to try and clean up Jenn's place that flooded bad from John and Stacy's room blowing off. We were in the lower apartment and Our two friend Nicole and Joe just made it alive by staying in the bath tub with their two dogs while wrapping themselves in a shower curtain while Joe held a door over them (they were upstairs).

We are going
To get our food and water rations in place. We will also try the generator. Fingers crossed it will work for us some.

We have no idea what the island looks beyond gift hill right now. I am
Currently sending messages through miraculous "extended" reception. I will check my phone a few times through the day based on any Power source I can find, but please know after 3 days I am
Not sure if I will still have any.

If I don't respond to your text , don't be alarmed. I will be staying in contact with Beth Escardo, Joshua Dorfman and my sister , Deana Alfieri to cover as many coordinates as I can for as many days as I can. They all have full permission to post updates on Facebook to keep others in our world that is quite devastating and feels like a bad dream.

I mean my house in Stuart. Wood frame staring down a cat 4 storm? Not ideal.

For those in South Florida, this is probably your last day to prep and get out, I'd imagine.  With winds extending a couple hundred miles out from this storm, you don't want to be stuck in traffic on late Saturday in the middle of the State.  I hope everyone's good with their decisions and preparing as is necessary, but also hope anyone South and (especially) East of Lake Okeechobee will consider the option to GTFO.

my mom passed in 2014 and she had a double wide with a land lease in a 55+ community in Pt ST Lucie, east of 1.  She was lucky in her 7 years there (she couldn't afford insurance I came to find out) in that nothing major hit her area.  I inherited that giant toilet of a property and sold it for $61,000- in 2015.  I had thought about keeping it and renting, etc.  wife talked me out of it based on monthly costs.  gb my wife cause I hate to see what's gonna happen to that area.

Yeah, this won't end well for them if it hits.
