***Official 2018 Baltimore Orioles Thread*** Pitching Can’t Get Any Worse (1 Viewer)

You're up early.

Buck obviously has his reasons so I'll roll with it. I almost feel like this is a game Buck thinks will be a tough one to win. So then he'd rather have Gonzo set up for Game 4 to clinch the series. I would be pretty nervous if we lost w Gonzo today and suddenly needed a Norris win tomorrow to avoid returning to Baltimore for a pressure filled Game 5

Morning, my friend. :coffee:

I'm not complaining. After what Buck (& the rest of management/coaching) has done this season, I'd follow him into hell with firecrackers strapped to my waist. Just find it interesting how pliable Gonzales is - he doesn't seem to mind even a little how many days rest he gets.

The American League Championship Series will begin in Baltimore on Friday.

THE AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES WILL BEGIN IN BALTIMORE ON FRIDAY!

Just had to say that a couple of times, because I still can't quite believe it.

Since July 1, the Orioles are 32-8 in meaningful games at Camden Yards (they went 2-2 at home after clinching the AL East). Something else I can't quite believe is an .800 winning percentage.

Kind of cool to think that someone is going to have to beat the Orioles in Baltimore to keep them from winning the World Series.

So who else hated the TBS crew we had for our series? I don't think I've ever seen a worse national TV crew ever.

Terrible. No credit to anything the O's did. Everything was how Detroit wasn't executing. So annoying.

I bought a 13 game plan yesterday to get some leverage in upcoming tickets.

It was annoying when we were at home and all they announcers kept talking about was how if the Tigers played their home games at Camden, they'd have just as many HRs too. Guess they couldn't be bothered to look up stats and see that those O's had the most HRs on the road of any club in the bigs. Silly facts!

Then Cruz hits that homer yesterday and they basically crapped on him because it barely got over the wall in the smallest part of the park. Then when Martinez hit his double off the wall in the 9th, they talked about how the Orioles are lucky because that would've been out at Camden. Well too bad the game was in Detroit.

Did they do any research on the O's prior to the series? They also kept talking about how Tommy Hunter was our setup guy. Since when?

No credit at all given to the Orioles. Talked about how the O's needed to prove themselves. I guess having the 2nd best record in baseball and winning your division by 12 games just doesn't do it for some people.

So glad we won to prove those clowns wrong. TBS need to fire all 3 of those ######s.

What's everyone's thoughts on KC? I didn't like our matchup with DET and I was wrong. Then, out of Oak, LAA and KC..,I think I'd rather KC.

Hosmer and moustakas(sp) seem to be breaking out, but compared to the 3-4-5 we just faced...I don't care.

Is shields better than Max or Price? I don't know. I can see Ventura give us trouble and their bullpen is good. How if their defense?

We get home field once again which is nice.

Friday is full rest from Sunday so I expect to see Tillman vs Shields in game 1. Does Buck go with Chen in game 2? Gonzo, Gaussman???

KC is kinda like we are. Think we're better offensively. Their defense is at worst, equal to ours. Pitching seems pretty even and Holland is a stud closer like Britton.

Think our offense will prevail in this series though. After what we did to Detroit's pitching, I'm not worried about Shields, Ventura, Duffy or Guthrie. KC is a solid club though and we're not going to feast on their bullpen like we did Detroit's more than likely.

KC is en fuego, I'd much rather play just about anybody. I still like the O's though.
Momentum in baseball is fickle, but perhaps some of the adrenaline that had helped propel the Royals to some tremendously exciting wins

Yeah, I'm hoping the 5 day rest takes the momentum away from KC. They've been playing out of their cleats for the last 4 games. Must win game against OAK and what was sort of must win games in LA. I don't know what the scenario was to end the season. I know they were contending for the division title until the last game, but no idea about the wild card.

Regardless, let's hope they relax a little this week so we can punch them in the nose on Friday.

Their OF defense is way better than ours. I guess we're about even in the infield - but I hope we hit the ball over the fence because they will catch pretty much anything else. Bullpens are very equivalent - if either team is up after 6, they have a real good shot at putting it away.

I think the Orioles starting pitching is a little better - or at least has been since the All-Star Break. But Shields has been pretty tough on the Orioles this year. 2 starts, 2-0, 14 innings, a 3.21 ERA.

Fascinating match-up. Orioles are #1 in HRs and #30 in Stolen Bases. KC is #30 in HRs and #1 in SBs.

Going to be a great match-up. Going to be hard to wait until Friday.

Yep, but at least we can engage in all kinds of useless speculation until then instead of having to think about that awful performance by the Ravens offense yesterday.

Try not thinking about how bad the Redskins are going to lose tonight

Meeting the team at the airport is such an old school Baltimore thing that I think is very charming. Apparently they've told fans today to go the stadium instead, so there's a crowd gathering at Camden Yards.

As an orioles fan who does not root for the Ravens, this town is tough to tolerate at times. Last Thursday while I was driving down to the game, I put on 105.7 (the only sports talk station left) and Jim from Parkville or some other nitwit from Catonsville is calling up to talk about the Ravens offensive line and ypc. The hosts know what topic the caller is going to bring up and they steer the conversations.

It was the same thing today. Id say for the times I was listening, it was 70% Ravens. Grrrrrrr

Anyone tried listening to 1570 lately? Gosh, Nestor is an idiot. He completely dismantled that entire station. I thought they did the best job covering the Orioles of anyone on air. Drew and the other guys knew their stuff and were very entertaining.

Now it's commercials, replays, piss poor sound quality since he broadcasts out of his apartment and egotistical conversations celebrating what a great husband and businessman Nestor is. Unlistenable.

I always liked 1570 in a cable-access, amateur hour kind of way, even though I couldn't really stand Nestor. But Drew and Glenn were like being in a bar with a couple of really knowledgeable, opinionated and generally entertaining guys. It is now an unlistenable train wreck of epidemic proportions. It's about the worst thing I've ever heard.

I can't believe that a sports-crazy town like Baltimore can't put together a decent a.m. drive time sports talk show. Norris and Davis are boring and have way too many commercials.

How can anyone take Norris serious as a sports host? He's a former police officer and is from NY. Get the hell out of here. (I did like his political sow back in the day)

Since June 30, the Orioles are 35-10 at home. That includes going 2-2 in 4 essentially meaningless home games after clinching the AL East, so you could say they are 33-8 in their last 41 meaningful games at Camden Yards. That is unbelievable.

Hardy re-signed. Orioles and Cruz hopefully close to a deal and there are reports that Markakis could be signed before tomorrow's game.

Yes, please.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #Orioles also pushing to complete deal with Cruz, who recently changed agents, signing with Relativity Sports.

Good move, the Yankees would have been all over Hardy.

Totally. Is Hardy formal? Last I saw it was "close" but not done.

Orioles announce their 25 man roster. The only change: Matusz is in, Jimenez is out. Note: My daughter and I both like Matusz. She and he both wear number 17. We got Matusz t shirts at a t shirt give away night many years ago. There are not many of those still in circulation.

Reported $40M for 3 years. I think the Orioles got a good deal here. I thought top shortstops would be around $15M per year. And if the Yankees are involved, who knows how much money they would throw at a player.

Markakis is also acknowledge to being one of the main leaders in the Oriole clubhouse, although in a very quiet way. He definitely does not seek the limelight at all.

Wait, they're going to voluntarily re-sign Markakis?
Umm...Yes?
:oldunsure:

Why?
Markakis is a solid baseball player who the Orioles love. He did not live up to his first contract, although with ever escalating salaries, $11 M per year does not look that unreasonable now.

I definitely see the Orioles trying to re-sign Markakis. I do not see the Orioles overspending for him.
The Orioles had to sign (& overpay) him back then. He was the first homegrown player any good they had had in forever and, with the team being so bad for so long and NM being a fan favorite, they had to show the fan base something. It was much a PR move as a baseball move.

Is this for reals? Any update, I didn't even hear about it the first time.

 for wearing 17.

I've been wearing my 17 - Surhoff jersey. The cool thing is, I bought it 1999. This was the same year that the Orioles wore the "7" patch for Cal Ripken Sr.

I ordered it directly through the Orioles. I didn't know it at the time, bu they were offering to add the "7" patch to any authentic jersey that year. I was on the fence as to whether or not I wanted it, but I decided to and I'm glad I did.

If you told me in March or April that they would win the division, sweep the ALDS and be one of the last 4 teams playing baseball...I would have signed up for it on the spot.

Losing, losing the way they are, and losing to who they're losing to is incredibly tough. It will take me a few days to get over it and be able to appreciate what they actually did this year.

no kidding. I thought of a horrible but completely true metaphor this morning. Right after my wife and I got married, before we had kids, we got a Black Lab puppy. That dog lived 16 wonderful years. She slowed way down, but was never sick one time until the final week of her life when she started having seizures. For the longest time after she died, I couldn't remember any of the funny, wonderful times, only the saddening and frightening circumstances of her demise. Kind of how I'm feeling about this season right now.

Thank you, Os. That was fun. :banned:
Yep.

The Orioles ran into a buzz saw in the ALCS. No shame in losing to a team that's playing that well.

96 wins, clinched the division with 2 weeks to go, and ended up with home-field in the ALCS. That's a fine season.

I think the missing guys finally caught up to them. Just having Manny, Weiters, and Davis on a lineup card changes the offensive dynamic.

I look forward to 2015. The foundation to be a competitive team for the next few years is there - everyone is either in their primes or are approaching it.

Disappointing way to go out, but I can't complain too much. I don't think any O's fan at the start of the season expected this team to win 96 games, win the division by double digits and make a run to the ALCS. And do all that without Wieters and Machado for a good part of the season, Davis not being the 2013 Chris Davis and Ubaldo pitching like crap.

Getting Machado and Wieters back will be huge for this team. If they can add a top of the rotation starter, they could very well be back in the ALCS next year. Also have to figure we see Bundy and/or Harvey at some point next season as well. The future is bright for this team.
