I agree that they have a great shot at the playoffs. Also, Bosa hasn’t played and will make a big positive impact. The Chargers have their two toughest opponents under their belt (until they play the Chiefs on the road in week 15). Special teams cost them in a big way against KC, and they were within one score of the Rams in the second half. I still think they have a decent shot at the playoffs. I'd bet against a long playoff run, but anything can happen once a team gets into the postseason.
However:
1. I would say the jury is still out but not for much longer on Lynn. I’m not optimistic at this point. He is better than McCoy, but that is just about the lowest bar possible. As of right now, I do not think he is as good as Norv. And that is kind of depressing.
2. It seems like special teams has been a big problem for a long time now, and it still is. Lynn threw Kaser under the bus for the blocked punt because he didn’t shorten his approach, but IMO that is a direct result of (lack of) coaching. Lynn hired a coach to coach special teams who had no previous experience doing so, because he is a friend/mentor. Well, his inexperience shows. It showed last year, and Lynn didn’t do anything about it, and no one in the front office forced him to do so. This also reinforces point #1.
3. The Rams exposed both of the Chargers’ lines. As long as Telesco has been there, both the OL and DL have been weak. Weak starters and weak depth. And that was evident on Sunday. How many years does he get to properly address both lines? It’s a bottom line business. Or it should be.
Those things do not make me optimistic about the Chargers’ chances in the playoffs.
On a different note, what a disaster this move to LA is turning into for Spanos. The negative banners flying over the stadium Sunday were awesome. The family is largely hated in their hometown of SD, and LA doesn’t want the team, either. The team was last in attendance last year thanks to playing in a soccer stadium and plays in a stadium regularly filled with opposing fans. Spanos paid a $650M relocation fee and the value of the franchise is only up by $750M since the decision to move, per Forbes. And increases will be minimal relative to other franchises going forward since upon moving into Kroenke's stadium, the Chargers will no longer get any gameday revenue.
Karma. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving family.
