*** Official 2018 Chargers Thread **** (2 Viewers)

The Chargers have their two toughest opponents under their belt (until they play the Chiefs on the road in week 15). Special teams cost them in a big way against KC, and they were within one score of the Rams in the second half. I still think they have a decent shot at the playoffs. I'd bet against a long playoff run, but anything can happen once a team gets into the postseason.
I agree that they have a great shot at the playoffs. Also, Bosa hasn’t played and will make a big positive impact.

However:

1. I would say the jury is still out but not for much longer on Lynn. I’m not optimistic at this point. He is better than McCoy, but that is just about the lowest bar possible. As of right now, I do not think he is as good as Norv. And that is kind of depressing.

2. It seems like special teams has been a big problem for a long time now, and it still is. Lynn threw Kaser under the bus for the blocked punt because he didn’t shorten his approach, but IMO that is a direct result of (lack of) coaching. Lynn hired a coach to coach special teams who had no previous experience doing so, because he is a friend/mentor. Well, his inexperience shows. It showed last year, and Lynn didn’t do anything about it, and no one in the front office forced him to do so. This also reinforces point #1.

3. The Rams exposed both of the Chargers’ lines. As long as Telesco has been there, both the OL and DL have been weak. Weak starters and weak depth. And that was evident on Sunday. How many years does he get to properly address both lines? It’s a bottom line business. Or it should be.

Those things do not make me optimistic about the Chargers’ chances in the playoffs.

On a different note, what a disaster this move to LA is turning into for Spanos. The negative banners flying over the stadium Sunday were awesome. The family is largely hated in their hometown of SD, and LA doesn’t want the team, either. The team was last in attendance last year thanks to playing in a soccer stadium and plays in a stadium regularly filled with opposing fans. Spanos paid a $650M relocation fee and the value of the franchise is only up by $750M since the decision to move, per Forbes. And increases will be minimal relative to other franchises going forward since upon moving into Kroenke's stadium, the Chargers will no longer get any gameday revenue.

Karma. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving family.

2-2. Without Bosa (and Henry), this is just a .500 team. They barely beat a bad SF squad. I don't think Lynn is a plus, and it seems like the game has passed Wisenhunt by. Many of the offensive calls were :loco:  . Everything @Just Win Baby wrote above is true. Another year of Rivers wasted.

I was much more disappointed by them struggling to beat a heavily-wounded and mediocre 49ers team than I was the by the big losses to the only two remaining undefeated teams.

Agreed... As Chargers fan, I'm disappointed on lack of adjustment in Chargers defensive team to account for Corey Liuget's 4 games suspension and Bosa's foot injury.  I'm even more surprised with poor passing defense except for Derwin James as saving grace.  He may be a rookie but man, he's such a freak, amassing 3 sacks, leading (or co-leading) in that department.   I'm actually looking forward them to improve their defense when everything get together... including Bosa's pass-rushing terror on the field.

Well, the Chargers cut punter Drew Kaser... I'm sure he was the problem, so everything should be good now.

Some comments now that 4 games are in the books:

Just thought I would point out again how badly Telesco handled the Weddle situation. Regardless of how much Weddle contributed to the situation, Telesco treated him poorly. More importantly Weddle has been a much stronger performer than the Chargers' free safeties in the 2 seasons since he left, and he is halfway through a 4 year, $26M contract. That looks like a solid bargain at this point, given the market for free agent safeties these days.

I assume he will, but the Chargers have an interesting quandary in the back 7... In a way, it is a good problem to have. But it also highlights the type of challenge that can come with drafting BPA and it results in drafting a player at a position with a good starter. In this case, James is really a SS... but so is Addae.
Addae has been completely exposed when playing FS this season. He completely blew his responsibility on Kittle's 82 yard TD last week. At this point, it looks like the Chargers definitely prefer James at SS, so it seems that Addae will be out after this season, and the team will need to bring in an actual FS. Another reason the Chargers would have been better off keeping Weddle.

Chargers will reportedly sign PK Sturgis, so that is one problem (hopefully) solved
Guess not... but, hey, Kaser was the holder, so maybe he was the problem...

I know it's a dumb question but how large off an impact will the loss of Bosa have on the defense?
Not sure what kind of answer you are looking for beyond the obvious. Bosa is arguably their best defensive player. He is a huge loss for however many games he misses.

It will allow the offense to give extra attention to DE Ingram and potentially neutralize what is normally a potent pass rush, especially during the first 4 games while DT Liuget is suspended. This, in turn, could impact the secondary performance.

Last season, the Chargers’ pass defense was right there with Jacksonville at the top of the league. Bosa’s loss will probably drop them down by a fair amount while he is out.
Sure enough, Bosa's absence has really hurt both the pass rush and pass defense.

Raiders pretty much gift wrapped that win for the Chargers, but I'll take it.

As much as it pains me to say it, given how much of a detractor I've been, but getting Liuget back made a difference yesterday, particularly in the run game.

James is a really good player.

I can't believe they actively got rid of Lambo last year. Such a stupid move. They should be shopping for another K right now. Did they even look at Janikowski before he went to Seattle?

That was one of the best games I've seen them play in a while.

Bosa saying he's hoping to be back after the bye.

How about that Michael Badgley? I wonder how the Chargers deal with things once Sturgis recovers from his quad injury.

ESPN's Seth Wickersham reports the Chargers' viability in Los Angeles will be a "major discussion topic among NFL owners and executives at this week’s league meetings."

As Adam Schefter notes, it's a "troubling issue" for the league. The Chargers' PSL (personal seat license) sales have been a real struggle, and Wickersham says the team is expected to revise its Inglewood revenue goals sharply to a more realistic number of $150 million from initially setting it at $400 million. The Chargers are a team without a home as the Rams have cornered the L.A. market, and the Bolts are the stepson to the city. There were whispers last year of the NFL considering moving the Chargers back to San Diego. It should be done, but it would be a total admittance of failure by Roger Goodell and his billionaire buddies.

I posted this a couple weeks ago:

The bolded is key. The franchise value took a one-time increase, but will likely now stagnate if it stays in LA long term.

The franchise finds itself in a very difficult spot now. A lot of former San Diego-based Chargers fans have abandoned the team due to its scorched earth exit from San Diego. If they were to return, it is likely they would return to a smaller fan base, and this was already a market that usually had a sizable attendance from opposing fans at every home game.

Plus, the Chargers are on the hook for that $650M relocation fee, to be paid over the next 10 years. Would the NFL suddenly waive that $650M and lose that expected league revenue? If they didn't, the Chargers franchise would remain cash poor in their return and would be unable to contribute even as much as they originally offered to a new San Diego stadium. Even if they did, how do they make better progress on a stadium now after working unsuccessfully to get a deal done for more than a decade previously? Is the NFL not only going to waive the $650M but also contribute money to a stadium?

Meanwhile, since they made the decision to leave, the Raiders have been approved to move from Oakland to Las Vegas, which puts them 150 miles closer to San Diego, which could further impact the Chargers' market.

All those issues on top of the abject failure for the franchise and the NFL that a return would represent. I can't see it happening.

That win feels pretty ill-gained. But I'll take 5-2.

Bosa's dad was reported as saying they're not super confident he'll actually be back right after the bye. May take longer. I'm preparing myself for no Bosa this season. Which means I'm preparing myself for an extremely brief playoff run - if they even make the playoffs. Need to 5-4 or better from here on out to make it. Seems doable, but these are the Chargers here.

It's strange to think there are only five teams that have five wins on the season at this point and the Chargers are one of them. The skeptic in me is concerned that they haven't beaten a quality opponent, but at least they aren't losing to bad teams the way they have in past years.

I assume you mean Gordon.

“He participated more today,” Lynn said on Friday. “It was good to see him running around today. … We'll see (on Sunday if he plays). I don't want to speak for Melvin, but if he's feeling alright, I know he wants to play.”
Hopefully he plays.

Although he's definitely a big upgrade over Sturgis, I'm a little concerned with Badgley's leg strength. Now that the wedge blocks have been banned, most teams are trying to kick it out of the endzone. Badgley can't even get to the 5.

Do they just keep Bosa on ice until the playoffs (look at me assuming the Chargers are going to the playoffs)?

I hope not. They need him for the last 5 games. It would be ideal if he could come back in 2 weeks and play a limited snap count in advance of being able to play more snaps at PIT.

Sources: #Chargers star LB Denzel Perryman suffered an injury to his LCL and likely needs hamstring surgery, as well. He’s out for the season, but recovery should have him ready in 3-4 months. Rough blow for one of the AFC’s top teams.

This is a blow...

Can we apply the injury prone tag to Perryman now?

That's a bad hit for the Charger D.

Who will replace him on the roster?

Absolutely. He will now have missed 22 of 64 (34%) possible career games after this season, plus however many playoff games the Chargers play this postseason. I believe this also means he will have finished 3 of his 4 seasons on IR.

I don't dislike him, but I hope the Chargers let him walk this offseason. His skills are not strong enough to have to justify keeping him when he can't stay on the field.

Pullard and Jatavis Brown will get his snaps, and that might not be such a bad thing. Pullard was bad last year but looked much better in preseason. Brown looked great on Sunday. Meanwhile, they signed Tre'Von Johnson to fill the roster spot. If he is even active, I expect he will play special teams, not LB.

When's Bosa coming back?  Roto doesn't really say.
Not a return date, but a bit of an update on his progress:

Everyone’s wondered how Joey Bosa felt in his return to practice ever since Head Coach Anthony Lynn announced on Wednesday that the star edge rusher would take the field for the first time since injuring his foot prior to the season opener.

Well, 24 hours later, we have the answer.

And it’s exactly what we’ve hoped to hear.

“(I feel) pretty good,” he said. “(Wednesday) was a good day. I’m just continuing on with the process today, and we’ll see how it feels going into the weekend…I feel good today. It’s really not decided yet (if I’ll play vs. the Broncos). We’re just continuing with the plan, and that’s to practice this week. And we’ll see how it feels on Sunday.”...

“Until I’m done playing this year, I’ll probably be experiencing soreness and discomfort,” he said. “It’s going to be pretty tough, but it’s something you just have to manage with ice and whatever, and volume of course. It’s something that I expect I’m going to have to be dealing with the rest of the year.”

The good news, however, is that Bosa expects to avoid surgery following the season.

“That was the whole point of this process,” he explained. “I could’ve went and got the surgery done and been on my way to recovery (that way), but the doctor had a strong feeling that it wasn’t needed if we did this the right way. Even after that, we were running into some bumps and not sure how it was supposed to feel and this and that. It was kind of tricky, but at this point, we’re very confident that we’re not going to need anything like that.”

How does a potential HOF QB not just take the sack so you run about 40 seconds off the clock before you punt..?

Turning the ball over and missing kicks to gag a game they should have won? That's classic Chargers.
To be fair, the missed kick was irrelevant. (DEN would have kicked XP rather than going for 2 on their last TD.)

But, man, that was an ugly performance across the board in every phase:

  1. Although the rest of his performance was good, particularly given the pressure he was under, Rivers made 3 particularly bad plays - the 2 interceptions and not taking the sack on his last play. Reverse the second interception or take a sack on the last play  and the Chargers almost certainly win.
  2. 14 penalties for 120 yards is unacceptable. In particular, offensive penalties stalled each of the first two drives inside the 30, forcing field goals. If one of those FG drives was a TD drive, the Chargers almost certainly win.
  3. The defense allowed 13 points and 172 yards on the first 7 possessions, then allowed 10 points and 178 yards on the last 3 possessions. They also got no pressure on Keenum despite Bosa's return AND allowed the Broncos to run for 5.7 ypc. This despite the fact that the Broncos' OL was depleted entering the game.
  4. Special teams allowed another successful fake punt, which led to Lindsay's 41 yard TD run on the next play. Stop that fake, and the Chargers almost certainly win. This is especially bad since they also allowed a successful fake punt just last week!
  5. Coaching was bad. Wasted a timeout in the 4th. Poor/unimaginative playcalling in every phase. No apparent adjustments, at least none that were positive.
So much for having a shot at winning the division and earning a bye.

Also, with both Liuget and Perryman out for the year, I'm afraid this performance defending the run is the new norm.

Sucks having Gordon out for a while, it'd be a big plus to win this next one against the Steelers.

Bosa rounded into shape yesterday, he looked a bit rusty last week. I hope they can keep him and Ingram healthy the rest of the way.

I know Badgley didn't miss yesterday, but some of those kicks were pretty shaky. Zero confidence in this kid hitting kicks when it's critical.

I think I read that they can clinch a playoff birth with a win....crazy
If the Colts, Broncos, Titans, and Dolphins all lose, the Chargers can clinch with a tie. If the Chargers win, they clinch if none of those four teams win.

Regardless, if it doesn't happen this week, short of an epic collapse, it seems a near-lock to happen soon. And no,. I don't believe in jinxes.
