***OFFICIAL 2018 Cincy Bengals Thread - Beat the bad teams get slaughtered by the good teams (1 Viewer)

Figured I'd start a fresh 2018 Bengals thread with the first day of camp.  I think the resigning of Marvin has had a ridiculous effect on the team's Super Bowl odds.  At Monmouth Park they are the longest shot on the board at 125/1.

I think the schedule has challenges but the team itself is definitely improved from last year.  The biggest signing of the year of course was Buffalo signing away Russell Bodine.  Automatic upgrade to the line.  And given that Billy Price is healthy I'm really looking forward to seeing the Center not end up in Dalton's lap on like every single play.  The biggest question is what will happen with the right side.  Basically swapping OL coaches with the Cowyboys and landing Pollack will have a good effect I think.  With all the focus on Marvin staying there really has been a lot of change in the coaching staff.  I liked Guenther but I do think that Austin was a solid pick as a replacement.

Anyway here's to a good year.

You guys might be the 2nd best team in the division, which might open up Wild Card possibilities. You're better than Buffalo. You're a tick better than the Dolphins. I could see you losing a game to the Jets in New York. The entire AFC West has the potential to be better than you. However, I think you're as good as any team in the South.

Probably an 8-8 club. Not bad enough to get a top pick but you'll get into the playoffs 1 / 3 years with this team. AJ Green is still an elite talent.

...and this begins my annual hope for rational coaching, regarding the usage of Giovanni Bernard...
The weapons are all there on this offense if health holds up and they get credible line play this time around.  Would love to see a lot of quick hitters to Gio out of the backfield.

Apparently he's been catching everything so far this camp.  Would be great if he can develop into a big red zone target :)

-QG
I've been seeing clips of him. He does catch everything but he's not getting any separation. He needs to be either a precise route runner or work on his speed. Preferably both.

True and with the overall depth at receiver the preseason may be all the highlights he has this year.  That said, this could be bad news for Erickson if they decide that Darius Phillips can be the kick returner.

Of course if Tate does somehow end up suiting up for games he could be the scourge of AJ Green and Eifert fantasy owners as a goal-line vulture ;)

So LaFell was cut which I think it is a good sign in terms of how the young receivers are coming along especially Boyd.

-QG

Read on twitter that Driskel got some practice with the first team o-line (Source @jaymorrisonNFL on twitter).    Marvin said "stay tuned".

So maybe he is gonna be the first guy off the bench after Dalton has another short day in preseason game two.  Big chance for the kid.  Barkley did not look good - I figure a good job out of Driskel could land him the #2 gig.  If he falters I wouldn't be surprised if the backup QB answer isn't on another roster.  (Couldn't help but notice McCarron is running the 3s in Buffalo).

So they cut Iloka - in and of itself this move doesn't worry me as it means they think the kid they drafted can handle the job already.  $6m/year for Iloka a this point was too much and when you factor in the new rule on defensive hits it makes a lot of sense.

I'm more concerned about what it could mean for future contracts as the rule has been for years now that the Bengals do not bail early on these long-term contracts which has enabled them to sign guys with lower signing bonuses and has kept the threat of dead money at bay.  Players were willing to stay and sign these deals because they were going to see all of the money:  5 years at $30m really meant 5 years at $30m which is uncommon in the NFL.  Perhaps they are changing their way of doing things and have been planning to do so but I see this as being potentially a problem when we resign guys from here on out.

I'll be intrigued at how much Iloka signed for with the Vikings - my guess would be something like $3m for the 1 year.  On the outside I cannot imagine it being more than $4m.  A good chance for him to prove it with Zimmer in a defense he should be comfortable in.

Looking forward to the Bills lovefest on Sunday :)

Looks like the team is 98% healthy (Core is the only one - he is doubtful for week one).

Feeling good about this week.

You should - Indy is pretty much bottom of the barrel. You guys have a good defensive unit, Ross has made progress, Mixon looked way better on film than his box scores, Eifert (knock on wood) is healthy. I think Dalton will be a top 8 QB in 2018.

Historically tough division but the other two contenders have a ton of warts. Browns are more talented this year but I still can’t see them winning more than 4 or 5.

Shows what I know about Mixon - though we'll get a better read against Baltimore's defense - I will say he has gotten good at picking out where the holes are.

Gotta love a come-from-behind win down 13 in the 2nd half on the road.  Have to say I was pretty angry most of the game - we still make so many of the same mistakes that Bengals teams have made over the years.  The one saving grace I will say about Marvin is that his teams almost never ever quit when they fall behind.  We've done well a home vs the Ravens in recent years and Buffalo isn't really a good read on where the Ravens are really at but I do think this will be a tough challenge on a short week.

Wow what a win.  Lazor is a magician being able to work with these pieces to make things like being able to run to Bobby Hart's side of the ball effectively.

I feel good about these Bengals. They seemed like they had their foot on the gas all night.

Baltimore pass rush was non-existent. Does it suck or does Cincinnati have a good line?

We have a better line than last year.  That said...Bobby Hart is our starting right tackle.  Ask Giants fans about him ;)

Bengals defense just can't play against the good offenses.  And barely does enough against the bad ones.

Brutal.

Can totally see this team being 10-6 and getting smoked by Houston in the first round :(

-QG

You guys fired your DC. I suppose ownership is just going to roll with Lewis sinking another season at this point.

Worst Bengals D I have ever seen.  The injuries are a big part of it but the scheme was terrible.

Did you know Hue Jackson once was a defensive coach in Baltimore?  I hear his services are available and he's a good friend of Marvin Lewis.  Have to think he may be joining that staff sooner rather than later....just sayin.....

He could be the HC in waiting...

Believe me I had a healthy fear of Hue being named head coach last year when all logic dictated he be fired after an 0-16 season.

Anyway, Marvin is going to coordinate.  I think he's coaching for his job, knows it, and thus took over the reins.

-QG

Hue just waiting for his next assignment of a team for us to fleece high draft picks from - his mission in Cleveland failed when somebody foiled him by unplugging the fax machine during the McCarron trade

-QG

In the Bengals defense, Hue did just beat the Ravens earlier this year and we all know when he is on the sidelines the Browns almost always lose. That’s 7-4 and right in the hunt for the last wildcard.

It is brutal being a Bengals fan.  Thank you Quiz for hanging in there and giving us all the gory details.

How's that working out for ya'll now?   :lmao:

Man...I had to go digging for this thread!   :lmao:

Living in Cincy, I come across a few good stories now and then.  Saw this one and had to share it with ya'll, as I feel his pain with the Bengals org (similar to the one I felt with the Browns org for many years).

Bengals season ticket holder makes non-negotiable offer

posted by Lance McAllister, 700WLW

I received this email last week. I find it to be an interesting exchange between the Bengals ticket office and a season ticket holder. The season ticket holder makes a non-negotiable offer for his return in 2019.

-------

From the Bengals:

Hi Tim,

Hope you have enjoyed coming out to the games this season. Looking ahead to 2019 we recently went on sale with our season ticket deposits.

The deposit goes towards your overall cost of the season tickets. It will essentially work as your first payment. They are time stamped as well so the sooner you put one down, the better your time slot is for choosing seats.

Placing a deposit allows you to take full advantage of our interest free payment plans.

We also have a limited amount of complimentary tickets to the December 16th game vs. Oakland Raiders when you place your deposit.

What are your thoughts?

-----------------

Response from season ticket holder Tim:

Thanks for your message and for asking about my thoughts regarding your offer below. Since you asked, here they are:

I have had half season or full season tickets every year since PBS opened. After Marvin Lewis was renamed head coach for 2018 I swore I was done with Bengals season tickets but caved when the Jungle passes were offered for $20 a game in the same section in which I was previously paying $50 per game. That said, there are a few things I need to know before considering tickets for next year.

1 - I need confirmation that Marvin Lewis and Hue Jackson are both fired and that they won't be allowed to have access to PBS, players and the facility.

2 - I need assurance the new coaching staff understands basic football principles such as: Timeouts have value, clock management is important, penalties are bad and especially real accountability for performance, which is something ownership and coaches have lacked since 1991.

3 - Cincinnati needs new leadership. Are there any indications that Mike Brown will step down as the GM of the team? Last thing the Bengals need is another first round WR that can't do his job while the QB runs for his life and the offensive line gets FOUR false start and numerous holding penalties in week 13 of the season.

4 - Cincinnati deserves new ownership. Are there any rumors that the Brown family would sell the majority share of the team?

5 - Ticket price reduction. While the Jungle pass deal seemed good on paper at $20 a ticket, I still strongly feel I overpaid. I'd be willing to renew my same seats (or better) for $10 a game.  Price is non-negotiable! For $20 I could have seen 2 movies and even if it was the same movie twice I can assure you I'd have found it more entertaining than the Bengals games this season.

Lastly, thanks for the offer of complimentary tickets to the December 16th game vs. the Raiders. You should note that I had tickets to the December 2nd Denver Broncos game on unusually beautiful day and elected to stay home. I took a nap during the actual game and don't regret it. My only regret was while sleeping and not watching the debacle, errrr I mean game, I failed to submit a #Tweetsigot to Lance McAlister, as I made his list the week before.

Best of luck selling season tickets for 2019. Based on attendance in 2018 I'm pretty sure I have plenty of time to pull the trigger.  I hope you consider my non-negotiable offer (#5 above) and as long as criteria 1 - 4 are met I'll be back in the jungle to perhaps see the Bengals actually beat the Steelers.

Best Regards,

Tim

I think the one thing that would have a worse effect on attendance than Marvin returning would be Hue replacing him as head coach

-QG

Last three weeks, I keep checking to see how good of a draft pick they will get.    Then they can trade it for a broken down OL or draft another wr.    Deepest defensive draft in years, and they will screw it up.   Time to clean house

Season ticket holders need to cancel their tickets or nothing will ever change.  I quit watching this year and don't miss it.

Pretty much Bienemy only realistic non-Hue hire right?

Though looking at the withering Marvin coaching tree maybe Zimmer will be available.

A team thread started before Labor Day is not even two pages yet. Hard to route for this team. Ownership is not in it to win it. I’m a lifelong fan who is struggling to stay interested. This organization is far too predictable. As Tracy Chapman once sang,  “Gimme one reason to stay here”

Geno Atkins seems like a really good dude. Seems like a guy that would be easy to root for.

Ok, you got me there GD. Geno and Chapman are something to hang your hat on. Mixon appears to be someone to build around as well. Maybe “Stuck in the middle with you” would have been a better song choice.
