*** Official 2018 San Francisco 49ers thread *** (1 Viewer)

The question was if it mattered to the league.  None of those players was disciplined for those scenarios.
Tunsil was the consensus number 1 pick. He fell to 13th, that is the difference of 3-4 million dollars and
a fully guaranteed contract. The board is littered with threads of players getting punished without any
legal trouble but with lots of public image trouble.

Sorry for the hijack. I'll end it here.

But Tunsil wasn’t punished by the league because it happened before he was in the league. Yeah, cost him a ton of money but not because of league discipline.

A #87 patch or helmet decal would be nice also.

49ers working with NFL on ways to honor Dwight Clark’s memory

They are working with the league to figure out exactly how to do that since NFL approval is required for helmet decals or changes to the field at Levi’s Stadium.

The 49ers are considering a marker in the end zone to approximate where Clark landed to complete “The Catch,” even though the play happened at Candlestick Park, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. They also could erect a memorial dedicated to Clark outside the stadium.

Clark died from ALS on Monday. He was 61.

Video of Jimmy Garoppolo’s press conference following media availability at OTAs. 7 minutes, 51 seconds long.

https://www.49ers.com/video/jimmy-garoppolo-we-have-fast-guys-out-there-and-they-are-all-a-threat-deep

Hot damn I love this guy. Just listening to him talk gets me pumped for the season to get underway.

Heres a transcript on the presser:

A couple months into the offseason program, I know you guys are basically down to your last week with minicamp coming up next week.

“Yeah. It’s been good. I think the team is making a lot of progress in a lot of different areas. It’s been good competition between the offense and defense, which you love to see this time of year.”

WR Kendrick Bourne is a guy who looks really confident right now. You’re pretty tight with all of the receivers, but it seems like you’ve connected with him a few times. What have you seen from him in the time you’ve gotten here and his growth to now?

“Yeah, growth is a great word for it. Last year, when I met KB he was a rookie, just coming along, but this offseason has made some great strides. I think our whole receiver corps as a group has really come a long way. They’re moving in the right direction, working hard, putting in the extra time and I think that’s going to make a difference.”

In terms of the long ball, where are you on chemistry with your guys? Is that usually the last thing that sort of comes together with the receiving group?

“There’s not a certain order of what comes together faster. It’s all coming together slowly, but I think we’re doing a good job of getting on the same page as one another. We obviously have some extra time now. It’s not just get ready for Sunday and learn this in a week. We can break things down, we have film sessions where we get to just talk to each other without the coaches, which is always good. I think it’s really coming together well.”

Is that something you do during the Saturday sessions, figuring out who each of these guys is?

“Yeah. That’s some of my favorite time because you get to see, when coaches are out here, guys might act a little differently or whatever it might be. When you get them just the players, you really see a different side of guys and it allows you to connect with them in a different way. Just talking to each other, we get on the same page and I think we have a very open group and a very willing group.”

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has talked about you having a full offseason to understand the why’s of all the calls and not just memorizing information. Can you elaborate on why that helps you and how that translates out on the practice field?

“As the quarterback, you want to be able to answer any question that is asked to you. You want to if you get put in a tough spot on the field, be able to get the team into the right play. Last year, not that I was handcuffed, but I just didn’t know some of the reasons of why we were doing things. It was just kind of get this by Sunday and we’ll tell you everything else in the offseason type of thing. I think learning the why’s has definitely helped me. I still have a long way to go. We’re not even through OTAs yet. It’s a work in progress, but it’s coming along.”

Can you talk about C Weston Richburg and how your chemistry with him is coming along?

“It’s been good. Wes is a great guy. Very hard working. We get along great. We joke about when we took the first snap together it seemed like we were doing it for years. It’s great working with a guy like that. He helps me a lot.”

You’ve had a chance now to be in the Bay Area without being in the scope of the season. What’s it been like? What’s the reception like when you go out in public? Has it been hard? What’s it been like for you?

“It’s exciting. People are really looking forward to the season. A lot of excitement in the air. Really getting to know certain areas of the Bay a lot better, which is cool. I never got to do that last year. I was pretty much here 24 hours a day. It’s nice to get out and experience some of it.”

T Joe Staley said that it is crazy going out in public with you because there are cameras everywhere. Has that made it difficult? Have you had trouble going out in public?

“It is what it is type of thing. I don’t really know. I think Joe attracts more of the cameras than I do personally, but he’ll tell you different.”

Running backs coach Bobby Turner just said RB Jerick McKinnon is a guy that really likes to play without the football. As a quarterback, I know it’s just practice and you’re not in pads yet, but can you feel that? How much can that help you?

“Yeah. Jerick, he’s a talent man. He does some things that you don’t even know how he does them, is the best way to describe it. He’s like a jitterbug back there, but he’s savvy and smart at the same time, which is a great feeling as a quarterback having a guy like that.

Is it easier for you to take on the leadership role being here from the start rather than coming in midseason? Is there a difference that you’ve noticed now that you can take more ownership of the team?

“Yeah. I think just being comfortable in my environment and knowing everybody now. Last year, I didn’t know everyone’s name so that was tough to begin with and then I’m trying to learn everything week by week. It was a whirlwind last year, but now that things have slowed down, I feel more comfortable in the environment and getting more and more used to everything. It’s a great situation. I love being here. I think we’ve had a good OTAs and we’re working hard right now.”

When you hear people from the outside start putting the 49ers as a playoff contender or a hot team on the rise because of your 5-0 finish, what do you think about that?

“I think we’ve got to have a strong finish to these OTAs first. People always like to talk about the predictions with the season. Even when the season just ends, they start talking about it. It’s all noise on the outside, but I think we have a good group that is locked in right now. We’re focused on OTAs. We’ll go in to training camp, hopefully have a good training camp and take it day by day.”

Will you do any throwing sessions between minicamp and training camp? Will you guys get together?

“Yeah. We’re trying to set something up. We don’t really have it all worked out yet, but we’re trying to.”

On a fourth-down play in the move the ball period, you picked up a first down to WR Pierre Garçon. What’s it been like with him? Is he a nice veteran safety blanket for you, knowing exactly what you’re going to get from him?

“Yeah, that’s a good way to put it. You know exactly what you’re going to get. P is as reliable as they come. He has that veteran mentality of he knows exactly what to do, he’s going to help you out, do whatever he can to put you in good situation as the quarterback.”

You didn’t grow up around here, but have you gotten a sense of what Dwight Clark meant to this franchise and this region?

“Yeah. We talked about it today. Seeing all of the 87 shirts around here. We had a couple people talk about it in the team meeting. He seemed like a great guy. I never got to meet him, unfortunately, but just seemed like a great guy, loved to have fun. I heard he had the best hair in the Bay Area. He’ll be missed.

You’ve worked a lot with RB Matt Breida during OTAs. Can you talk about what you’ve seen from him?

“Very talented young player. Smart, too. Having halfbacks like him, Jerick, [RB] Raheem [Mostert], all of those guys, they really help make my job a lot easier being as smart as they are. Doing the right things, putting themselves in good situations, it just makes my job so much easier when they’re doing that stuff.”

You had that deep throw to him today. Is that something that he would normally do?

“Yeah. I think all of those guys. Any skill guy in our offense really, it sounds crazy, but they’re all a threat deep. We’ve got some fast guys out there. It’s fun to have those guys to be able to throw to.”

The constant trait of this offense is just speed. Given your time in New England or in college, have you ever been around an offense that has this much raw, straight-line speed?

“Definitely not in college. Not in 1AA. But yeah, it’s a good group and it’s a fun group, too. They’re willing to work hard, put in the time but when it comes down to it, when we come out on the field, they’re grinding and I love that. It makes my job so much easier.”

You seemed to have developed a really good rapport with Kendrick Bourne. What makes him a guy that you’re so willing to target so frequently?

“He brings a lot of different traits to the table that it’s hard for a defender to cover him. He’s, I don’t even know how to describe it, deceptively fast but at the same time, he has some wiggle to him. It’s a nice combination and he does a great job of catching the ball. I don’t know how many drops he’s had all of OTAs, I don’t want to jinx him, but he’s done a great job for me.”

Your center, Weston, today got into a little shoving match there with DL Solomon Thomas. Was he protecting you?

“I didn’t really see it, to be honest. I kind of threw it and looked out the corner of my eye and saw it all going on. It’s football. Stuff is going to happen out here like that. Honestly, I love to see that out of the O-Linemen. It gets me fired up. I can’t do it and it’s probably a better thing that I don’t.”

The NFL still is mulling a potential multigame suspension for San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Wednesday.

Foster entered a plea of no contest to misdemeanor weapons possession on Wednesday and was sentenced to two years' probation, 232 hours of community service and $235 in fines. He is not allowed to have guns during the course of his probation.

The charge for possession of an assault rifle was tied to the Feb. 11 incident at his home in Los Gatos, California. Foster had two felony charges related to domestic violence against him dismissed by Santa Clara County (California) Judge Nona L. Klippen.

Foster legally purchased the gun in Alabama, but it is illegal to own in California. Because its purchase did not violate any federal laws, the charge was reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor.

A report on Friday from Adam Kurkjian, formerly of the Boston Herald, stated that, according to multiple sources, Belichick did indeed look to trade Gronkowski and even had offers on the table from the San Francisco 49ers and the Tennessee Titans. According to Kurkjian, Belichick and Robert Kraft had a meeting to discuss the possibility but quarterback Tom Brady threatened to retire if the deal went through, so Kraft ended the discussions.

From multiple sources, here's what I have re: the Gronk rumors. Told Belichick wanted to trade him. Offers on the table w both the Titans and 49ers. He and Robert Kraft had a closed-door meeting to discuss. Tom Brady threatened to retire if the deal went through. Kraft nixed it.

Gronkowski has been quarterback Tom Brady's favorite target for years. The 28-year-old tight end has spent all eight of his NFL seasons with New England and amassed 474 receptions for 7,179 yards with 76 touchdowns.

49ers QB coach offers a progress report on Jimmy Garoppolo

June 7, 2018 at 7:16 AM

Jimmy Garoppolo's first day with the San Francisco 49ers was a whirlwind after a mid-season trade with the New England Patriots sent him across the country. On October 31, 2017, Garoppolo arrived at the team's headquarters in Santa Clara, was given a tour of the facilities, and introduced to members of the coaching staff and team executives.

That afternoon, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan introduced Garoppolo to the Bay Area media for the first time via a press conference. After that, it was off to do a few interviews with local media outlets. It wasn't until those public relations commitments were done that Rich Scangarello, the team's quarterbacks coach, finally got his hands on his new project.

Scangarello and Garoppolo started to get to work around 9 p.m. that night. Over the next three hours, the coach introduced the quarterback to the very basics of Shanahan's playbook – the formations. Then they broke for the night so Garoppolo could get some rest in his hotel room.

Garoppolo was back to work the next morning at 6 a.m., taking in as much information as Scangarello could provide. That was how the quarterback's infamous crash course with the 49ers started. The goal was for Garoppolo to digest enough information to be relatively effective should the need for him to play in a game arise. On November 26, 2017, nearly a month after the trade that sent him to San Francisco, that need arrived.

With victory already out of reach, Garoppolo was thrown into the final minutes of a home game against the Seattle Seahawks after an injury sidelined rookie starter C.J. Beathard. Garoppolo proceeded to thrill the Levi's Stadium crowd completing each of his two pass attempts for 18 yards and a touchdown.

The rest of the story is well known. Garoppolo remained the starting quarterback for the remainder of the season and led the 49ers to five-straight victories, including impressive performances against three playoff teams.

"Rich doesn't get enough credit in my opinion," Garoppolo told reporters before the 49ers' final game of the season. "There's a lot of moving pieces, but Rich has been with me since I first got here. Literally the first day I walked in here, we were going over stuff after I did all the interviews and whatnot."

It has been over seven months since Garoppolo first met Scangarello and started working with the coach. A lot has changed since then. The 49ers rewarded Garoppolo with a five-year deal worth up to $137.5 million, and the quarterback entered his first offseason with Shanahan and Scangarello. Last season, Garoppolo didn't have the time he needed to learn all the nuances of the offensive system or even why certain plays were being called. This offseason has been about giving Garoppolo all the information he needs to be even more successful.

"When he got here, it was just a play on a board, and he was trying to picture where people were going to be and do his best to execute based on what the defense did," Scangarello said on Tuesday. "Now, it's everything from the moment you walk up to the line of scrimmage, recognizing keys from the defense, man, zone, pressure, and then what you do post-snap with your feet, tying it to the timing of the pass game, and progressions, and all that.

"It's just a comfort, and you can see him growing more comfortable every day. And I think we know him a little bit better and what he does well, and we're adapting to that as well."

For Garoppolo, mastering the 49ers' playbook will make him an even better leader on the football field.

"As the quarterback, you want to be able to answer any question that is asked to you," Garoppolo told reporters on Tuesday. "You want to if you get put in a tough spot on the field, be able to get the team into the right play.

"Last year, not that I was handcuffed, but I just didn't know some of the reasons of why we were doing things. It was just kind of 'get this by Sunday, and we'll tell you everything else in the offseason' type of thing. I think learning the why's has definitely helped me.

"I still have a long way to go. We're not even through OTAs yet. It's a work in progress, but it's coming along."

Even in practices this offseason, you can notice a change in Garoppolo. Rather than asking questions of coaches between reps, he will take teammates aside to discuss timing, routes, and other aspects of each play. Scangarello was asked if that is part of his maturation and growth within this system.

"It is," he responded. "Honestly, when he first got here, he really wanted to do that, and it was hard for him to. He's very conscientious of speaking the language of the coaches, and we appreciate that as coaches. I think it's one of his gifts. He's just a natural leader. Guys gravitate to him, they listen to him, they respect him. And for us, it's nice that he can speak our words and the guys will go do it. It's just another way to get everyone on the same page."

Garoppolo sat behind an all-time great in New England. It was an opportunity to learn from two of the game's best offensive minds in quarterback Tom Brady and head coach Bill Belichick. However, as long as Brady continued playing, Garoppolo was never going to see the football field aside from an occasional substitution.

Garoppolo went from working with great football minds like Brady and Belichick to learning from one of the game's most impressive playcallers in Shanahan.

"That's the luxury of not playing early in your career," Scangarello said. "He was able to be in a really good system with one of the greatest players in the NFL, and develop, and understand the game. And then to get here and see it our way, which is a different way, to really grow and see how Kyle thinks about defenses, and learn from Kyle. I think he's really embraced it.

"He's into it, and truthfully, Kyle's knowledge of defenses, for an offensive mind, is as good as anyone you can be around. Jimmy has been fortunate, and he's really emersed himself and embraced it."

In San Francisco, Garoppolo is the face of a franchise. He has the Bay Area and NFL world excited to see what he will do next to top last season's impressive finish.

"It's exciting," Garoppolo said. "People are really looking forward to the season. A lot of excitement in the air.

I think the improved secondary will make the most difference.  If the coverage is good enough to make the QB hold the ball another count, that will be huge, especially for Buckner.  A lot of those pressures will turn to sacks.

I still think they are going to resign Dumerville.  He's old but could be a good situational pass rusher.  Not really sold on Marsh as our top pass rusher.  Hope I am wrong of course.

Finally, now everyone can focus on football.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/23988821/nfl-suspends-san-francisco-49ers-lb-reuben-foster-2-games

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Reuben Foster was fined and suspended two games by the NFL for violating the league's conduct and substance abuse policies.

Foster issued a statement that said:

"I accept the League's decision and am sorry that my mistakes have hurt my team. I have a responsibility to the 49ers, our fans and our community, and I am committed to learning from this situation and making better choices in the future. The support I have received over the last five months has been humbling, and I do not take it for granted."

In June, Foster pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge related to possession of an illegal weapon, stemming from a Feb. 11 incident in Los Gatos, California.

Foster was sentenced to 232 hours of community service and two years of probation in which he is barred from the possession of any guns or ammunition. He also must pay $235 in total fines and surrender the weapon that brought the charge, a Sig Sauer 516.

Foster's plea brought to an end a tumultuous offseason in which he at one time faced four charges, three of which were originally charged as felonies.

Winners and losers from first week of 49ers training camp

The San Francisco 49ers have wrapped up their first four days of practice at training camp. Monday marks their first off day, which affords us an early opportunity to break down some winners and losers thus far. Plenty can and will change, but here is who is standing out.

Winners:

Pass Rushers

Early reports are proving that the 49ers’ most improved unit on defense might be their pass rush. Defensive linemen Solomon Thomas, DeForest Buckner, and Cassius Marsh have come on strong during the first few days of camp, racking up would-be sacks and dominating the offensive line.

Newly signed linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu has quietly racked up a sack in every practice, including two in Sunday’s session. The ex-Charger can definitely come on strong during training camp and prove to become a valuable piece on the 49ers this upcoming season.

Rookie Receivers

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo’s supporting cast dramatically improved during the offseason, with the additions of wide receivers Dante Pettis and Richie James.

While Pettis didn’t sign until the first day of training camp, he’s drawing a lot of “oooh’s” and “aaah’s” from the crowd, due to his sharp route-running ability. Numerous clips have surfaced of Pettis beating defenders and creating a huge throwing window for the QBs.

In addition, seventh-round pick James is quietly developing a strong rapport with Garoppolo, making a plethora of catches during practice. Similar to Pettis, his quickness and decisive routes are allowing for easy completions.

RB Joe Williams

After a disappointing rookie season, running back Joe Williams seems to have found his stride during training camp. During the first few days, Williams has already broke off two 20-yard runs and a 65-yard house call to finish practice.

Williams was a major contributor at Utah, but was put on the IR in 2017 after dealing with injuries. With Jerick McKinnonreplacing Carlos Hyde, and Matt Breidacontinuing to blossom, Williams will need to impress in order to find snaps on the field. So far, so good.

DB D.J. Reed

Another day three pick for the 49ers that may turn out to be a home-run selection. Versatile defensive back D.J. Reed has been playing multiple positions on defense and impressing the coaching staff.

Reed caught a difficult interception, as he was diving and completely extended on the field. The ex-Kansas State defender was guarding fellow rookie Dante Pettis and stole the pass from QB C.J. Beathard.

The hybrid defender should be on the fast track to make the 53-man roster after creating a highlight reel during the first week of practice.

Losers

Former first-round picks

A pair of ex-first rounders have been no-shows in training camp thus far and that should concern fans. DB Jimmie Ward has been on the receiving end of positional changes, resulting in second-team snaps.

Ward has been the primary backup to Sherman, but hasn’t shown his value, as he’s been routinely beat by the likes of WRs Marquise Goodwin and Kendrick Bourne. The 49ers’ coaches were effusive in their praise of Ward, but he’s yet to back it up.

On the flip side of the ball, offensive guard Joshua Garnett hasn’t lived up to his draft expectations either. In a heated battle for the starting guard job, Garnett was unable to practice on Sunday after banging knees with another player. It’s not expected to be a serious injury, but with Jonathan Cooper opening camp on the PUP list, every lost snap is a lost opportunity for Garnett.

Both Ward and Garnett will need to start gaining momentum for a roster spot, otherwise they could be on the outside looking in.

WR Pierre Garçon

Remember, it’s only the first week of practice. That being said, the one connection that’s been lacking chemistry is one version of G-squared — QB Jimmy Garoppolo and WR Pierre Garçon. This was the first time that the two players will find the field together, as Garçon landed on the IR with a neck injury after eight weeks last season.

During the first two days, Garoppolo didn’t even look to Garçon, but the connection struck a home-run play on Sunday. G-squared will need to work on their chemistry as training camp progresses, as their combination could open it up for the other receivers.

Hot-Take Artists

Sunday morning, a video emerged from the 49ers’ one-on-one drills, featuring WR Marquise Goodwin and CB Richard Sherman. Without any context, Goodwin put it into a higher gear and blew past Sherman, who could only watch as QB Jimmy Garoppolo dropped the pass in.

As expected, social media ran with it, claiming Sherman’s downfall and adding that the new 49ers’ cornerback won’t return to All-Pro form after his Achilles injury.

That’s the sad and lazy take, because the one-on-one drills are supposed to highlight the receiver’s speed. The defender has no safety help and in most defensive backs’ case, absolutely no shot of catching up with Goodwin’s 4.27-second 40-yard speed.

The ex-Seahawks’ defender was never known for his speed and I’m confident Robert Saleh won’t put Sherman in a position to have to single-cover the opposing team’s fastest pass catcher.

Great news about Joe Williams, I was hoping he'd show up ready to prove himself.
Yeah, it would make for an exciting running game if he plays to Shanahans draft day expectations.  I like Brieda and all, but Williams would give them another big play guy and add some size.

I liked the Attaochu signing when it happened, I think he has the potential to be pretty good...he kind of got lost in the shuffle behind Ingram and Bosa with the Chargers. He's a 2nd round talent that could thrive in SF IMO.

I think pass rush could be one of the most improved areas this season.

Armstead sidelined with a hamstring injury for a couple of weeks.  Shocking!  Interested to see how Julian Taylor does in his absence.  Most of the injured guys are back today (Taylor, Smith, Cooper, etc).

Pettis and Warner are both having strong starts thus far.  I think the Warner / Foster LB duo is going to be a good one for years to come.  If I was playing FF I would be buying McKinnon all day, especially in PPR.  From all accounts he is looking very good.  Goodwin also continuing right where he left.  Also excited about some of the young CB's on the roster.

Haven't been this excited about an upcoming season in a long time.  May be a slow start, but this team has all the ingredients to make a run at a playoff spot.

https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/Report-49ers-TE-Kittle-s-shoulder-injury-not-13147144.php

49ers’ Kittle, Breida have separated shoulders, but may play in Week 1

All six 49ers who exited San Francisco’s preseason opener Thursday are expected to be available for the team’s Sept. 9 season opener in Minnesota.

On Friday, head coach Kyle Shanahan was optimistic that the injuries sustained by four starters and two key backups in a 24-21 win over the Cowboys won’t be long-term.

“Yes,” Shanahan said, “we’re hoping they’ll all be available Week 1.”

The most serious injuries were sustained by tight end George Kittle and running back Matt Breida, who both have separated shoulders and will miss the final three preseason games. Neither shoulder injury involved structural damage. Inside linebacker Malcolm Smith (hamstring) could return for the third preseason game at Indianapolis on Aug. 25, outside linebacker Eli Harold (knee contusion) is day-to-day and defensive tackle Solomon Thomas and offensive tackle Garry Gilliam are in the concussion protocol.

In other injury news, Shanahan said he would be “very surprised” if cornerback Richard Sherman (hamstring) plays in the second preseason game at Houston on Aug. 18. He said it was possible right guard Jonathan Cooper (knee), who has been eased back into practice after undergoing offseason surgery, could make his preseason debut against the Texans.

In addition, right guard Joshua Garnett (knee), who hasn’t practiced since July 28, could return to practice next week. At one point during training camp, Shanahan expressed surprise that Garnett wasn’t practicing. On Friday, he said Garnett had swelling in the same knee in which he had surgery last year and had received an anti-inflammatory shot.

49ers may have struck gold in 7th round

https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/49ers-rookie-DT-Taylor-finishes-strong-debut-with-13146086.php

49ers rookie DT Taylor finishes strong debut with flourish

In his wire-to-wire performance in the preseason opener, rookie Jullian Taylor offered more evidence he could be the 49ers’ latest seventh-round steal.

After an impressive start to training camp, the defensive tackle had three tackles, two quarterback hits and a sack that led to the game-winning drive in a 24-21 win over the Cowboys at Levi’s Stadium.

“I saw him make a bunch of plays,” Kyle Shanahan said. “He’s done a good job for us in camp and it looked like he showed up tonight.”

Taylor, who started in place of Arik Armstead (hamstring), said he initially had to work some “jitters” out.

“I think the only thing that was really different was the players in front of me,” Taylor said. “Seeing players like (Cowboys QB) Dak Prescott, players like that you’ve seen on TV, it’s like ‘I’m really out here. I’m going against them now.’”

Taylor, the No. 223 pick, arrived in Santa Clara after starting nine games at Temple. Sound familiar? Last year, 49ers’ starting safety Adrian Colbert, the No. 229 pick, was selected after making just 12 college starts.

On Thursday, Taylor and Colbert were part of the first-string defense, but Taylor stayed on the field until the end. His biggest play came just before the two-minute warning when he dropped Mike White for a nine-yard loss on 3rd-and-9 to force a punt. That set the stage for the a 77-yard, game-winning drive.

“This was my first game and I started so it was kind of like ‘Whoa,’” Taylor said. “Once I settled down and really got my feet under me, it got easier.”

49ers to sign RB Alrfed Morris

49ers to sign RB Alfred Morris

Few running backs know Kyle Shanahan’s offense like Morris.

Fooch’s update: Kyle Shanahan had a couple comments on the signing of Alfred Morris.

On what he brings to the table: “Alf did a a great job for us for the two years I was with him. It’s not flashy, but he runs extremely hard. He’s very reliable, he’s always been able to — you’re blocking for zero, he’s usually able to get at least one. He’s a hard-nose runner you can keep handing the ball off to. Very reliable.”

On if he has a chance at a roster spot: “I just told him, I waited so long to invite him because I didn’t want to invite him unless I believed he had the chance to make a team. I do believe he has a chance to make the team here. And that’s all Alf wants. He wants a chance to compete, and I think with some of these injuries that we’ve had, now he does have a chance to compete. He’s getting in late, but we’ll see how he does over these next two weeks. If he’s running the same way he always has, he’ll have a chance.”

The San Francisco 49ers are going to sign running back Alfred Morris this week, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Once Morris passes his physical, he is expected to join the team for their joint practices against the Houston Texans.

The move comes following injuries to starting running back Jerick McKinnon and primary backup Matt Breida. McKinnon suffered a calf strain on Sunday at practice, and will miss this week. The team will re-evaluate him next week, but it seems unlikely he plays the rest of the preseason. Breida suffered a separated shoulder last week against the Dallas Cowboys, and while he is expected to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, he is unlikely to practice in full or play the rest of the preseason.

There are few running backs who know Kyle Shanahan’s system quite like Morris. Washington spent a sixth round pick on Morris in 2012, and he had a monster rookie season with Shanahan as his OC. Morris finished the season with 1,613 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per carry. He had 1,275 yards in 2013 with Shanahan, and then 1,074 the year after Shanahan left.

Morris is an easy plug-and-play for the remainder of the preseason, but it will be interesting to see how the depth chart shakes out. Raheem Mostert and Joe Williams were competing for the third running back role, with Jeremy McNichols and Jeff Wilson behind them. Morris turns 30 in December, but he very well could jump in and make a quick impact.

McKinnon’s calf injury and Breida’s shoulder injury should clear up for Week 1, but if there are any concerns that they might nag them for a while longer, Morris could very easily claim a role with the 49ers. For now though, he’s a preseason option that will look to get some film together to land elsewhere. I feel like after the third preseason game we’ll have a better handle on if he has a shot at a roster spot.

Brad Almquist on why Jullian Taylor’s emergence could push Arik Armstead down the depth chart

The San Francisco 49ers were hoping to get a good look at defensive end Arik Armstead during training camp. The fourth-year player managed to take part in just four practices before a hamstring injury sidelined him.

To fans, an Armstead injury isn't a big surprise. He is coming off a shortened 2017 season that saw him break his hand during a Week 6 matchup against the Washington Redskins and land on injured reserve. Armstead's 2016 campaign also ended on injured reserve. He played in just eight games with four starts before a nagging shoulder injury and surgery finished that season.

The 49ers went out and picked up a defensive lineman, Jullian Taylor, in the seventh round of the draft. The rookie has received a significant amount of practice reps in Armstead's absence and started last Thursday's exhibition opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Taylor played 32 snaps in the game, which was second among defensive linemen to Ronald Blair's 39.

Could the emergence of Taylor push Armstead down the depth chart? Brad Almquist of KNBR joined the latest 49ers Webzone No Huddle Podcast and discussed the topic.

"The fact that every single day that [Armstead] misses, Jullian Taylor is getting that much more opportunity," Almquist tells Al Sacco. "Jullian Taylor has been one of the positive breakthroughs of camp, for sure, and I think everyone saw that in the first preseason game. This could end up being one Lynch and Shanahan's — I don't know if you want to call it a defining pick — but it's another testament to their late-round success.

"This guy played 15 college games, didn't pick up football until his high school senior year. This guy is ridiculously raw still and (defensive coordinator Robert) Saleh still talks about that. He's got work to do on his hand placement, this and that. But he's so strong and physical. He gets really good leverage.

"And DeForest Buckner, a couple of weeks ago, said he just bullies people. That's a pretty big compliment for a rookie, especially a seventh rounder. I don't see why he couldn't be that starting big end because Arik Armstead has not really shown that he can stay on the field long enough."

Almquist goes on to say that once Armstead does return, the battle for that end spot may become an open competition.

Nice 10 play drive for a TD to open the game vs Houston. Jimmy looked good, he hit Goodwin for a 36 yard gain on 3rr and 7 and hit Trent Taylor in the back of the end zone on 3rd and goal from the 2.

Great opening drive.  Pass defense needs to get it together.  Richburg with 35 yards in penalties on one play is less than great lol.

Going from Jimmy G to Beathard is like turning the cheat mode off.  He processes everything like 3x slower lol.  Looking forward to watching Warner and Taylor.  Love how Sherman went over to the DB's after the first drive to discuss what happened.

Yes. Go make this happen right now for #### sake!!!

Kyle Shanahan discusses 49ers pass rush, potential of bringing back Elvis Dumervil

One of the biggest perceived areas of concern on the San Francisco 49ers roster is the lack of a legitimate pass rusher. The defense managed just 30 combined sacks last season and ranked 26th in the league when it came to bringing down opposing quarterbacks.

The 49ers passed on drafting a dedicated pass rusher in April. Instead, they seem content with relying on names like Cassius Marsh, Jeremiah Attaochu, and others to prove they can handle the task.

Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh remains hopeful that a pass rush will develop this season. They have even experimented with defensive lineman DeForest Buckner on the edge in specific packages to find a way to generate more pressure on the outside.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked during a conference call with the media on Sunday if the 49ers have discussed ways to upgrade the position.

"We want to upgrade everything," Shanahan responded. "If there's something at the end of this situation that we feel will help us and make us better, and it makes sense contractually to where we think it helps our team this year and going forward in the future, that's something that we won't hesitate to do at every position. We have a responsibility to do that at every position, not just pass rusher."

What about possibly bringing back Elvis Dumervil, who San Francisco parted ways with in March? He was responsible for a team-high 6.5 sacks in 2017, and his 105.5 sacks over his 12-year NFL career ranks 26th all-time.

"Elvis is a guy who I have a lot of confidence in," Shanahan said. "He did a great job for us last year. If we felt like that was the right opportunity at the end of this, then Elvis is a guy that John (Lynch) and I wouldn't hesitate to reach out to."

Alfred Morris to start against the Colts

https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/117988-shanahan-alfred-morris-start-against-provides-williams-update/

San Francisco 49ers running back Alfred Morris will get his first opportunity to impress his new coaches against an opposing defense on Saturday. In fact, when the starters take the field against the Indianapolis Colts, he will be among them, says head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Morris did not play this past weekend against the Houston Texans after joining his new 49ers teammates four days before kickoff. The team is without Jerick McKinnon (calf) and Matt Breida (shoulder) until Week 1 of the regular season.

Shanahan joined KNBR on Friday morning to discuss Morris and the running back situation.

"McKinnon and Breida, them being down and stuff has opened up a lot of reps for other guys," Shanahan said on the Murph & Mac show. "We got Jeremy (McNichols) a lot of reps last week. We're going to have Alfred start this game. He didn't get any carries last week, so I expect to see him a lot in the first half and see what he can do there.

Less drops and penalties, dammit!!!

Richburg seems like a bit of a hot head...hes got at least 2 personal fouls in the preseason, he needs to tighten that up!

Elvis has left the building...for good.

Five-time Pro Bowler Elvis Dumervil announces retirement

Elvis Dumervil, who recorded 105.5 sacks over his 12-year NFL career, has decided to "step away" from the NFL to focus on his family and his off-the-field business, he announced Thursday on Twitter.

"After spending a great deal of time talking to my family and prayerfully considering what's next in my career, I have made the difficult decision to step away from the NFL at this time," Dumervil said in his post. "It's been an incredible 12-year run."

Dumervil was selected in the fourth round of the 2006 draft by the Denver Broncos, with whom he spent seven seasons. He also played four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before joining the San Francisco 49ers in 2017.

He played 16 games and had 6.5 sacks last season, but became a free agent after the 49ers did not pick up their option for 2018.

"My body still feels great," Dumervil wrote in the post, "and I know I can still help a team win. I will miss being on the field, particularly on Sundays. But I also have a wife and two young children who need me and a real estate business that I can now turn my attention to full-time.

"Football was certainly a huge part of my life but it wasn't my entire life. I look forward to my next chapter with no regrets."

The 34-year-old defensive end was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and led the NFL with 17 sacks in 2009. He ranks 26th all-time with his 105.5 sacks. Dumervil also tallied 262 tackles, forced 23 fumbles with 13 recoveries and had an interception during his career.

McKinnon may be out for the year

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/24548405/jerick-mckinnon-san-francisco-49ers-knee-injury

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon was hurt on the final play of a team workout Saturday, and a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the fear is a torn ACL.

McKinnon is scheduled to have an MRI later Saturday to determine the extent of the injury.

Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said McKinnon made a cut on air and immediately went down awkwardly.

"We're concerned about it, but we don't have an MRI done, so we don't know for sure," Shanahan said. "We're nervous about it, that's for sure."

Because McKinnon's injury was noncontact and because of how it looked, Shanahan acknowledged there was concern it was ACL-related.

That really sucks, was looking forward to seeing him and Jimmy G together.

Maybe it's just a sprain ?

As bad is this is, I saw SF as an 8-8 or 9-7 team this year before today...I still think they can win 8 or 9 without McKinnon.

We're still a year away from being a playoff team IMO. Stay the course.

ETA: it does hurt a bit knowing they were in the running for K Mack and didn't make it happen, but man it was a STEEP price.

Tavaris Cadet and Brandon Oliver got cut today, as did Thomas Rawls and Charcandrick West and Fitzgerald Toussaint.

Oliver had 36 catches in 2014 (80%).  Cadet had 40 catches in 2016 (74%).

There are some decent RBs available.

Torn ACL, he's on IR and out for the year.
####. Why can’t we have nice things?

I thought getting Morris was a solid move because they lacked a big back, but sure don’t want him as a part of a two man RBBC. Now they are worse off than last year.  Hyde was a poor receiver but much better than Morris.

Not criticizing Lynch/Shanahan but man, I was so pissed when they traded that 3rd rounder to the Saints in the 2017 draft. Wanted so bad for them to take Kamara. ?

Hindsight is always 20/20.

Not sure they are worse off than they were last year. At RB maybe, but not overall...we've got Jimmy G, Foster is healthy and has a year under his belt, Garcon is back, Goodwin is looking like a WR1, Fred Warner was a solid pick, Soloman may be turning the corner, Sherman is a big upgrade in the locker room and as a mentor, the OL should be better...losing Jet sucks but like I said earlier, I don't think we were gonna be a playoff team this year, so let's hope we have another good draft next spring and are loaded for bear going into 2019.

Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a setback, but I'm not losing all hope. Worst case we have a nice draft position and address needs a little better next draft. We're still on the rise.

Yeah I agree. But I think we can survive it based on upgrades elsewhere. It's gonna be tough sledding no doubt. I'm just ready to watch some meaningful football!!  :football:
Me too. Think the team is definitely moving in the right direction and way ahead of schedule considering the train wreck of two years ago when Lynch|Shanahan came on board. Very excited about the season but losing Jet hurts. Brieda and Morris will do fine running the ball but having a RB who excels as a receiver is essential to that offense.  Just depressing.  Will be interesting to see who they sign for that role but expect a lot more snaps for Juice.

Remember watching the 2017 draft, day 2, and being amped when they got on the clock with back to back picks in the early 3rd and Kamara still on the board. Figured with the importance of a pass catching back in the Shanahan offense and nobody who fit that role on the roster, that Kamara would be one of the picks.  I think they made the deal exchanging that 3rd for the saints 2018 2nd thinking New Orleans would be a middle of the pack team at best.  As it turned out, they only gained about 6 slots  by waiting a year and the Saints traded up to grab Kamara. Ended  up using that pick from the Saints to trade up and grab Pettis, so see how that plays out, but man, Kamara would look good in scarlet and gold and they could have used the McKinnon money on upgrading the guard position.  Plus, they wouldn’t have blown a 4th on Joe Williams  ?

Nah - fantasy owners have a funny way of priorizing.

i don’t own shares of either but I wish I did.
I guess, but even as a Goodwin owner in a couple leagues, I can’t find a silver lining in my favorite team losing a key player because it gives me another few points a game for my fake football team.

But yeah, it will definitely help both of them.

Where is everybody?

So the game wasnt pretty, but we hung until late in the 4th quarter on the road against a great defense. Still too may drops by receivers...DeFo and Warner were stellar though, ya gotta love that. Jimmy threw some dimes but made a couple of bad decisions...I couldnt watch but was able to peek in every so often and see a play or two. The fumble by Morris was brutal, if we score there who knows how the rest of the game goes. It looked like we were moving the ball pretty well.

And man we cant get through a game without injuries these days...

I should be able to watch every game from here on out, looking forward to seeing them play the Lions at home next week!

I thought the defense played pretty well actually.  Had Foster played, I think some of the short passes to Cook would have been better contained.  Buckner was dominant and looking forward to seeing Foster and Warner playing together.

-3 picks, including a pick 6

-Fumble at the 1 by Morris after the fumbled the play before and got it back

-Goodwin goes out in 1st quarter

-Some brutal drops by Kittle (he seems to have a hard time tracking deep passes)

-Thomas going offside when everyone ( everyone but Thomas anyway) in the stadium knew they weren't going to snap the ball.  Brutal.

Guess the silver lining is that they didn't get blown out on the road against a good team  with that many turnovers and stupid mistakes like they would have in the 3 years previous.  Need to stop the sloppy play or it will be a disappointing season.

It’s early, not panicking, etc etc, but I’m not super impressed with Jimmy this year. He received one of the bigger bailout calls I’ve ever seen today.
