***Official*** 2018 World Cup thread (and Drinking Guide) (5 Viewers)

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned in here because I've been AFK, but can I request no spoilers in the thread title during the course of the Cup?  I am planning on watching most weekday games on DVR delay.  Hopefully this isn't a problem....
You can request it all you want...

;)

I kept this running tally 4 years ago, let’s do it again.

Villarreal (ESP) - 2

Arsenal Tula (RUS) - 1

CSKA Moscow (RUS) - 1

Decided to watch a few minutes of the opening game while eating lunch. My FotMob app is giving me notifications about 10 seconds before its on TV. This is a real problem.

And UEFA.  UEFA is gonna be every bit as rough as it already is since you'll have to finish top-2 in your group to have a chance to qualify.

I assume with 16 spots and 9 groups in UEFA that it would be the 9 group winners and 5 best 2nd place getting in automatically and the other 4 2nd-place teams having to playoff for the last 2 spots.  You'll still have the odd big team from Europe stumble and miss.

Depends on your definition of big I guess.

UEFA will supposedly qualify 16 out of 54 nations in the expanded WC format so it'll essentially be like the Euros.  Holland didn't qualify for Euro 2016 and Norway and Denmark lost in the playoffs.  But Europe has enough minnows that the bottom two teams in each group are very predictable, so it'll be like four teams competing for two berths plus one playoff slot.

I too am recording and was studiously avoiding all soccer threads, twitter and general websites where the final may be spoiled. I then had the brilliant idea of going out for good pizza at lunch and naturally the great old goombas in there had the game on. How dumb am I? I watched the US-Germany game at that same pizza joint four years ago.

You do not, repeat, do not always acquire wisdom with age. However, I see that I can pretty safely skip tonight's re-broadcast.

I think the Euro's expanded to 24 teams (a format almost by not quite as bad as 48 teams).

It is sad that I am old enough to remember when the Euro's were just 8 teams.  The growth to 24 is so huge.

I've got a couple soccer-related apps on my phone, turned off all notifications from them long ago.  Too many times I'm in dark mode and forget not to look.

I may go that route.  For games I don't care about I like getting real time alerts.  I guess FotMob does have the ability to mute alerts for each game, I will just have to remember to use it.

Ya know, I used to deem you a pretty decent fella... & then I saw your avatar.
My ancestory (that I'm aware of) is English and Welsh.  I usually root for the U.S., England and the Dutch in the WC (Netherlands because I watched them play back in '94 in Orlando and partied with their fans).  Alas, the Dutch have been a mess and T&T b-team happened so I'm going with my only remaining choice.  I don't want to bandwagon.

Well that's just great, I am getting some kind of error message when I try to log into the Fox Sports GO app using my DirecTV credentials.  Anyone have any bright ideas?  :(

assuming they do the usual 9 groups of 6 then only the top 2 in a group will either qualify directly or end up in a playoff:

9 group winners directly

5 best 2nd place directly

4 worst 2nd place playoff for the last 2 spots.

UEFA does not have a chance at either of the two mini-playoff spots.  So any team that's 3rd in their group is done.  That is bound to leave a traditional power out now again.

New slots (and total in confederation)

UEFA: 16/55

AFC: 8/47

CAF: 9/56

CONEMBOL: 6/10

CONCACAF: 6/41

OFC: 1/11

2 wild card spots among the last confederations - with one team each from CONMEBOL, OFC, CAF, AFC and two from CONCACAF.

Could have 8 CONCACAF teams in the 2026 World Cup :excited:

Good article on the new format here:

Linky

We probably should shift this back to regular soccer thread.

Good luck

I don’t know why they changed the login, but they’ve made a bad decision.

I believe you have to create a whole new Fox account to use all their platforms. Stoopid

ESPN's website profiling golf over the opening day of the world cup.  Have been all morning.

Neat.
I don't know the answer to this - but does ESPN have broadcasting rights to the US Open?

Even if they don't, US Open is kind of a big deal.  And, given that the USA is not involved in the WC, I can see this as a business decision.

http://www.espn.co.uk/

Has WC front and "centre"
