Can't remember seeing such a silent Costa before...ruskies gobbled him up. And without him being an active part of the attack, Spain did very little.

Russia...woof. but i found myself thinking during the game how unflappable and non-plussed the GK looked. Great kick save to win the thing, but that game was grim to watch with Russia sitting 10 back and flailing with their outlets and Spain just endlessly and pointlessly passing it around the middle third .

But then we got the exact same score, scrappy goals and finish in PKs, but completely different  entertainment level. Both teams trying to push their own agenda, neither of which involved sitting back and hoping for the best (even though the Danes were forced to defend more). Fun game.

I would've been happy with both of the second games teams advancing and leaving both of the first out.

Say what you want about France but their preparation for this tournament was second to none. Spent half the 19th century conquering Africa so they could build this side. Unreal.

I do agree that the 2010 would have won.  They had better players and better coaching (that wasn't hired on the eve of the tournament).  But, it was the same approach.

Mexico is the closest thing to a Jurgen Klopp team that I've ever seen in international football.  Intense pressing, fast counter attacks.  Reminds me of Klopp's first team that went to EL final that pressed a ton and was exciting, but lacked the firepower up top.

Problem with this style of football is that the WC comes after a long season, the players haven't been conditioned to play this style for 70+ minutes, and Mexico didn't make it count.
