***Official*** 2018 World Cup thread (and Drinking Guide) (3 Viewers)

Can't remember seeing such a silent Costa before...ruskies gobbled him up. And without him being an active part of the attack, Spain did very little.

Russia...woof. but i found myself thinking during the game how unflappable and non-plussed the GK looked. Great kick save to win the thing, but that game was grim to watch with Russia sitting 10 back and flailing with their outlets and Spain just endlessly and pointlessly passing it around the middle third .

But then we got the exact same score, scrappy goals and finish in PKs, but completely different  entertainment level. Both teams trying to push their own agenda, neither of which involved sitting back and hoping for the best (even though the Danes were forced to defend more). Fun game.

I would've been happy with both of the second games teams advancing and leaving both of the first out.

Spain was woeful.  A quality side with more creativity would have cracked that D.

Spain of 2010 wouldn't have given up the equalizer, and Iker was a better penalty stopper than de Gea.

Spain 2010 wouldn't have gotten to PKs. They would have cracked that defense long before.

Would you just stop with all the facts and stuff and just agree with me?  TIA.
I do agree that the 2010 would have won.  They had better players and better coaching (that wasn't hired on the eve of the tournament).  But, it was the same approach.

Now, let's talk about how dreamy Coutinho is

Mexico is the closest thing to a Jurgen Klopp team that I've ever seen in international football.  Intense pressing, fast counter attacks.  Reminds me of Klopp's first team that went to EL final that pressed a ton and was exciting, but lacked the firepower up top.

Mexico looks good, but Brazil looks very sloppy right now - passes all over the place, and first touches that are all over the place.

Problem with this style of football is that the WC comes after a long season, the players haven't been conditioned to play this style for 70+ minutes, and Mexico didn't make it count.

I'm a fan of Holden in the booth, but he really needs to start smoking a pack of cigarettes a day. I start having mickey mouse club house flashbacks during his commentary sometimes.

Great patience on that goal.  Neymar didn't play hero ball, and Wilian with an excellent change of pace to create the space for the cross.

Great goal.

Sooo much better from Neymar. He seems to have learned from that first game. His back heel give up and movement were perfect. He's starting to step it up.
