Official 2019 Oakland (?) Raiders Thread (2 Viewers)

There's lots to be excited about for Gruden/Mayock's Raiders right now. Being 6-4 and tied for 1st in the division is something no one expected. Carr is playing like the second coming of Rich Gannon. The rookie class is playing well and contributing.

But the Oline play was concerning yesterday. I might be wrong but this might have been the 1st game that all the starters played from start to finish. They should have played better. Atkins got the best of Miller a few times and I think that was the most sacks they gave up all year. Maybe because this was the first time they all played together they needed a game like this to get on the same page. Let's hope so. All their remaining division games are on the road. Regardless, the playoffs are within reach, I never thought I'd be saying that in 2019.

Go Raiders!
I definitely recall the starting O-line playing in our last game, and commented on by the game announcers, but I'm not sure about the "start to finish" part. I don't remember any of them being knocked out of the last game for any plays.

That said, I agree that the o-line took a slight step back, but overall still played like a top tier unit imo.

Receivers: between Waller, Williams and Renfrow, we done got ourselves a proper (and cheap and unexpected) receiving unit!

Add in the other 2 TEs who really shine on those key 1 or 2 plays in the game where Gruden dials up a sneaky play to one of them (and they always seem to make the grab), and we have some nice depth at TE as well. (e.g. that great TD catch by Moreau).  Adding any more proven talent at WR will only help this already solid unit. Not sure who our WR3/4 are though at this point...actually, I do know. It's our 3 RBs.   We do need a "proper" WR3 on this team...or a studly WR1 (like we tried to do with ABRown) which will give us above average WR2 and WR3 in Williams and Renfrow.

I can't believe how unexpectedly good this season has been so far. I must be dreaming...

Carr really is playing like Gannon. You can see how Carr is much more comfortable with the system this year than he was last year.

I am not worried about the line. Miller did have an off game but he has lot's of solid starts this year. Everyone has bad games. I didn't see anything from the others that would make me worry either.

We just need a true #1 WR. I mean, I am actually glad the headcase is not on team but.... let's dream for a second.... can you imagine how good our offense would be right now if we had AB on the team talent wise and none of the drama?! My goodness.... we would have the #1 offense in the league. NO DOUBT about it.

I am loving the chance to take first right now if the Dolts win tonight. Regardless, we are looking at an extremely good chance at making the playoffs this year. The schedule is very favorable.

Jets- should win

Chiefs- Likely a loss but we can win if we pound the ball and control the game.

Titans- should win

Jaguars- I would give us the edge on the game.

Chargers- we beat them once and can do it again, but though they have played poorly they are a dangerous team

Broncos- should win

Once in the playoffs.... I am not overly optimistic. It is hard to see us going deep there with a depleted and thin secondary with an LB corps that is also very thin (though we should have Lee back and Lee, Whitehead and Morrow are serviceable. Hopefully Preston Brown still has something in the tank and isn't done. If he is anywhere close to the Bills version of Brown that is a good pick up for sure.

Speaking of pick ups... I liked what we got out of Dion Jordan and DJ Swearinger this Sunday. Two guys that are prime candidates for the old school Raider redemption players.

Going to be an interesting game against the Jets.

Overall, I doubt Gruden is letting this team look ahead to the Chiefs, but all the recent momentum can sometimes make a team overconfident. Hope we remain grounded and focused and psyched to play, as going back on the road against a team that has also been playing above ability as of late can be dangerous.

The big story IMO is going to be our run game vs their run offense. We know what we have in Jacobs, and in a huge nasty O line that can, when they are playing their best, utterly dominate the LOS (see: Bears game). We also have a staff that loves the old school ground and pound. I can't tell you how much I love seeing a team -- and specifically OUR team -- have everyone know you are lining up to smash the ball down throats, to have the opposing D know without a doubt you are setting up a run play...and run successfully anyway.

That said, Jets run D has been one of the better ones in the league, and are one of the best at limiting opposing backs YPC and overall yardage. Going to be our strength against theirs, so our loins need to be properly girded to win the battles up front and be successful with the ground and pound.

Similarly, we need to stop their run to make them one-dimensional. Bell is still a talent, and while he gets volume, he can be bottled up on the ground despite being fed carries. If we can force Darnold into defensively-favorable long down and distances, we can unleash the salt and pepper dogs of war on Darnold, generating pressure, disrupting his rhythm, and forcing mistakes and hopefully sacks.

Big opportunity -- and challenge -- ahead. Let's go and control our own destiny.

Great post that is sure to fire up any Raider fan.  I live in NJ and I'm considering going to the game, but not sure I want to deal with the the Jet fans.  Plus at this point the whole getting to and getting home from the game are tough to deal with.  I'll probably decide to watch at home.  If the Raiders can get this one the Chief game becomes HUGE.

The Jets (and Darnold) have been playing better the last couple of games than the dumpster fire they were previous. I think our boys will see that on film and not get too cocky. Plus, they just beat with a small margin the 0-10 team in the league. So..... sure, feel good that we are winning but it isn't like we just beat the Patriots and Ravens and now are playing the Jets.

I do wonder if they will be tempted to try to attack our secondary as a way to give Darnold some confidence. On top of that, we know Bell is dangerous but he hasn't been lighting things up this season either.

No question this is set up as a dogfight of a game that can go either way. But the more I think about it, it is far from a trap game. I think Gruden and the team know full well it’s a bit of a must win if they want to keep the wildcard pace going - ESPECIALLY with the Chiefs game coming up that by all likelihood we expect a loss.

Jets have a great run D and we can expect Waller to be draped by Jamal Adams. Will come down to our D stepping up, big games by Williams, Renfrow, and Zay Jones, and more than anything else, the right preparation and game plan.

As to the last point, I have utmost faith in Gruden. A lot of people thought Gruden saying he was bringing back “old school” was folly. Many mocked his ablity to coach in a newfangled NFL.

Do me a favor and watch this phenomenal breakdown of our offense.

If that doesn’t hype you up and remove any lingering doubt of what Gruden and this entire team is doing in forging a winning identity, then go root for Rivers.

As to this weekend, it also underscores how hard this game might be. The Jets can take away the one thing that has led to our success this year - the ground game.

Without our ability to move the ball with the run - keeping good down and distance for Carr to convert, tiring their D while keeping ours fresh and minimizing their time to make mistakes given their youth and patchwork - this is a prime candidate for a loss.

2 ways we win:

1) Our O line needs to dominate, period.

2) Our D line needs to be stout up front against the run on early downs, then generate pressure off the rush and force Darnold to be uncomfortable and make mistakes.

We do that, we win.

ETA: penalties have always killed us, even this year. The video makes a point of calling it out as a major weakness still.

But just saw this crazy stat - over last 5 season, we’re 17-7 when committing >10 penalties/game, and 18-32 when committing <9.

Wildcard? WILDCARD?!?!?!!

Division title is in their control baby. Gotta change our thought processes brother.

I'm with ya, bra -- love what you're laying down and agree, we need to think like winners.

But expectations are way loftier than what I would have been thrilled with at the start -- just wanted a winning record, even a solid 8-8. And I'm not so removed from cursing my life every single Sunday for being a Raider fan. So I'm not crowning this team yet. Like all teams, they need to go out and earn it.

And we don't have control of our divisional destiny - KC has a game on us and just one other game with winning records besides us left.

While we secure the last wildcard spot right now, we have much more control of our destiny there -- we need the Texans to keep winning in their division, and our TEN game later this season could be crucial for both how that division is shaking out at that point, and for our own conference record.

I was so wrong about Gruden.  He still has it.  Has to be considered for coach of the year.

KC doesn't have a game on us if we beat 'em.  Then it comes down to math and math sucks.

We still have to win this weekend to even talk about the division. That whole discussion is still in the future. One game at a time.

But oh, to dream. Of going from 4 wins to a divisional crown. To see our unquestionable franchise QB go to the Pro Bowl for his 4th time. To have not just the OROTY, but the DROTY as well (hey, as long as we're dreaming big...).

And whether you were right, wrong, or in between, we're all RN4L.

Keep bleeding Silver and Black, boys.

We got this.

Crosby? Yeah, I could actually see him garner some DROTY votes.

Such a bummer Abram got hurt. Even in limited action he looked beyond legit and came off as an obvious leader on Hard Knocks.

This is going to be a difficult game.   The Raiders secondary is thin and Darnold has the Jets passing game working.   We need Carr and the receiving threats to play great since the Jets are built to stop the run game.

The Raiders are playing well enough to be in the playoffs but it's tough to make the cut with a few teams in a log jam at that cut.

No matter what happens, today and the rest of the season, I'm sold on Gruden and the future is bright.   Just win baby.

That was rough. Yuck. Not only did we lose to a team we should beat but we got trounced. To make things worst the freaking Bears won.

I didn't expect the Raiders to win.  It was a terrible matchup.   The Jets were going to stop the run and we weren't going to stop their passing game.  I didn't expect the blow out though.

This team has a lack of talent on D that is going to show up some weeks.

I gave up watching in the 3rd. Leading up to that, there were tons of drops from all our guys that really would have made a big difference in the game. Their O-line was holding play after play too and we weren't getting the calls (surprise!).... if we don't get pressure on the QB then our secondary isn't going to be able to hold up long.

It is a young team. I think this was the classic trap game. They were feeling themselves on the win streak and the talk about 1st place etc. Hopefully this is one of those games that wakes them up and gets them back to work. With our D, we are going to win by working harder and playing all in more so than the other team. Honestly, I love winning... but with our secondary as is, I can't see us making a real playoff run. I would love to see it. It would be epic. But our young guys are just too raw.

I will be interested in if we retain Swearinger and Jordan or not for next year. I am seeing enough there that makes me consider them not as a one year rental and both have pedigrees that might make sense to keep them around. Erik Harris has stepped up. Are we going to retain Joseph? I like the idea of Abram/Joseph at safety spots and Joyner as the nickel back with Harris and Swearinger in reserve. Am I wrong in seeing more from Jordan than Key before he went out?

A player we have not extended but I think has earned it is Mayowa.

The early drops by Renfrow and Williams were real killers. Carr was on target and the pass catchers bailed the Jets out.

The shortcomings at LB were very clearly demonstrated as the crossing routes and passes in the flat were almost entirely uncontested all day (or at least until mid Q3 when I tuned out, as Gruden did too when he pulled Carr).

This was a winnable game but mistakes, and one of the worst roughing calls I have ever seen, just created a snowball that wasn't going to be stopped.

#### happens! Bring on the Chiefs!!!

Ugh.  Just burn the tape of this game and move on and get ready for next week.  Like the Green Bay game, this one just got away from them and they couldn't stop the negative momentum.

I didn't expect this to be any thing else but a dog fight, but it wasn't even that -- we seemed (like Raiders teams of old and uncharacteristic of the way they've played this year) to deflate after some key moments that swung the game and let the Jets run away with the score.

The drops were mentioned, and they were inexcusable -- and across multiple players. Those killed momentum. Not being able to convert 3rd downs as efficiently as we have all year hurt us, too. But the safety we almost had, only to let Darnold escape and hit Bell downfield for a first was a killer. So was the phantom roughing the passer call on Hurst, which could have been huge in terms of leading to a potential score -- us missing the FG right after that didn't help either. Body language started to look "down" at that point, while the Jets remained fired up and bringing playoff game-type energy.

We are going to learn a lot about this team in how they rebound in a huge divisional game on the road. I have faith they can turn their energy around, but not a lot of faith we can win this in Arrowhead, which is doubly bad seeing BUF, PIT, and TEN all win this week.

Just a reminder of where we are - we don't have the talent yet to get sloppy and still win and with the injuries it's spotlighted.  And in this one we got our doors blown off.  Drops, poor run blocking, bad, missed tackles, blown coverages, bad pursuit angles.  Carr isn't going to be able to overcome all of that ever, and some days like today he won't be able to get out of his own way.  I wanna blame the 3k mile trip and time change, because it's brutal coming east like this and every year we have one or two of these stinkers, but man we really gotta figure out a way not to blame the mileage and just play ball.

Still pleased overall with the season, it's just a long road ahead.  DB talent is bad and LB talent is worse but somehow there's still progress.  Oline play has been better than expected and let us see Jacobs in his best light.  Get us a couple more draft pick hits and let our young guys develop and improve and we can start putting some things together.

Sucks we lost Renfrow but let's see if Dobbs can step up (not holding my breath), also Zay should have plenty of experience in the slot. Maybe that's a good spot for him that he couldn't play before because Hunter had it locked up.

I still wish Cincinnati was a reasonable organization and we could have gotten AJ for a fair price. I know it's "rebuild" mode but we've got a shot at the playoffs and I think he could have really changed our offense.

Let's shock these Chiefs!

All these injuries just shows the lack of depth that still plagues this team. They are who they are. A middle of the pack club, not one of the worst teams in the league and not the one of the best either. They are still rebuilding. IMO, the good news is Mayock's rookies can play. I have a lot more faith in him and the overall vision of the organization than I did 8 months ago.

I just saw that.

Damn.... one step forward and two steps back....

On a positive note, there is hope Joyner is back this week.
For his 3 penalties a game?  Joking/half-joking.  I haven't been impressed with him, but maybe I had unfair expectations for that signing.

ALAMEDA – Dion Jordan has to work on Thanksgiving. He couldn’t be happier about it.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft and immensely talented defensive lineman was hoping for the opportunity while serving a 10-game suspension for taking Adderall, the NFL’s fourth punitive action made against him. This latest ban didn’t accurately reflect the positive strides he's made in his personal life. He’s more than three years clean and sober and devoted to making the choices required to get his career back on track.

That is happening as we speak. Jordan trained insatiably in San Francisco while waiting for his suspension to end and an opportunity to arise. The Raiders gave him one close to his support system, where he has a chance to make a significant impact.

He’s doing that right now, jumping right in as an interior pass rusher on obvious passing downs. He already has a sack – he could’ve had another – and has created quarterback pressure on 17 percent of his pass-rush snaps.

That’s a good start, but it’s secondary to a larger point. Jordan is having a blast, and not taking a single second for granted.

“I love what I’m doing and where I’m at,” Jordan said after Thursday’s practice. “This time of year is football season for players and fans. To be in this locker room and experience it from the inside, to be a part of a team again is so special. I am more than grateful. I am more than thankful. I appreciate this opportunity and the teammates around me who have made this such a positive experience.”

Jordan has made a positive first impression his fellow defensive linemen, who say his size and freak athleticism changes the way they are blocked. He has made a positive impression on Raiders coaches, who can see him sticking around beyond this season.

“He’s a guy that can play the run,” defensive coordinator Paul Guenther said. “He can rush the passer. He can move inside, outside. The more he learns what we’re doing here, he’s going to be a really big part of our future if he continues on this level.”

Jordan would love to find a more permanent home with the Raiders, but he doesn’t think that far ahead.

“I’m a one-day-at-a-time type of individual,” Jordan said. “Today is what matters. It’s about maximizing every day until Sunday, and then taking advantage of that opportunity.”

Jordan should have more opportunities Sunday in Kansas City, a clash Guenther called a “nickel game.” The Chiefs employ three-plus receiver sets and will throw on any down or distance, making it likely the Raiders sub-package will be on the field a ton. That includes Jordan, who needs to be impactful from the inside or wherever he lines up.

Jordan admits excitement about that chance and those that come after but understands that it's a focus-on-the-present mentality and daily work habits that got him to this point and will guide him moving forward.

“Every day when I wake up in the morning, I think about what I have to do that day to get where I want to go,” Jordan said. “That’s the path that led me to this point. I get my a-- up and I work and I give the day everything I have. I give full effort in everything. That’s all people can ask for and all I can do. My mindset is this: if you do that day after day after day, good things will happen.”

Raiders still the Raiders....got excited with a 3 game streak against 3 bad teams and then got worked by the Jets...even the wins over IND and CHI don’t really seem as good as they felt....might count week 17 as a W but it is at DEN...can’t say any of the others are more than a coin flip....in fact I’ll take the other teams if I had too.... with Mahomes in the division gonna be another long 15 years...was a nice little 3 game run tho....

I love hearing stuff like this. Hope he keeps on track and he's looked very good so far, who knows, maybe he turns into the guy that was drafted #3 overall.
That would be awesome and another in a long line of Raider reclamation projects to flourish if he does. He had tons of talent, no denying that, coming out of college but it seems he was his own worst enemy. Similar to Waller actually. It sounds like he is thriving. I have seen him make some good plays and if you consider how long he has been out of football on tip of learning a new system, we could see some good stuff from him.

On top of that, one thing that I love seeing is the culture of the Raiders. It is a close group. You can see it in how the celebrate plays and congratulate each other. This team is family. This team is full of guys who don't just want to be in the NFL but want to be a Raider. That is a not only great for playing with heart like we have been (up to when the heart got ripped out of us with some bad calls, bad luck and bad plays in the Jet game that took its toll). It is also great for resigning and FA acquisitions (on top of the new tax advantages in Nevada). Mayock is in place to build through the draft. I have not been excited about our future like this in decades. I have been hopeful in the past but this really feels like building a team for long term competitive teams that will be in the playoff hunt on a consistent basis.

Meh.

Mahomes has been proven mortal. The Chefs have a fatal flaw that we are built to attack. We have been decimated on defense with players not playing that were suppose to be big parts of the D (Lee, Burfict, Joyner, Abram, Joseph, Key) and are playing without a true #1 WR because we underestimated the level of crazy AB is on. We have 2 first round picks and 5 total in the top 100. We are heading to Vegas next year and that will attract FA. We have a very young team with most key players having many years in them to go. Thst youth worked against us when we let the big mo roll us after getting crappy calls and a couple of big Jet plays. (Not to mention the Jets have been playing much improved football going into the game). It is ok. It happens. Hell... look at you running up the white flag after one bad loss. Buck up Raider, the future looks good.

Lol....I might be the biggest Chiefs fan on this board.....but your list of excuses was still pretty impressive....give me a few minutes and I’ll come up with a list of why the Chiefs have lost 4 so far....pretty much what any team can do with some losses....but just like week 2....reality check coming....buck up baby....!!!! :banned:

All these injuries just shows the lack of depth that still plagues this team. They are who they are. A middle of the pack club, not one of the worst teams in the league and not the one of the best either. They are still rebuilding. IMO, the good news is Mayock's rookies can play. I have a lot more faith in him and the overall vision of the organization than I did 8 months ago.
While I agree with nearly everything you said here, I don't agree with the bolded. No team in the NFL who is down to its 3rd/4th string/PS/FA pick-ups-to-cover-for depth players would be expected to keep the same trajectory as the the 1st string. A team may have great depth at one position, but not all.

We've really been crushed by injury/suspension at multiple core positions, and I'd argue that what we've done this year so far in accumulating the record we have actually proves that we have pretty solid depth -- fairly unexpectedly. It isn't top tier depth, but we're just above .500 with way more heart and play in our depth and playing "next man up" better than I've seen in many years.

The Chiefs are a good team that better beat the decimated Raiders team.   It should be a blowout.  The Chiefs are not some force to be scared of for the next few years though.   Their D is soft, they have no run game and their WRs are always injured.

Chiefs should win. Raiders should have beat the Jets.  #### happens.
The Raiders and Jets should have been a close game but it was a game made for the Jets to win.   The Raiders O is built to run the ball but the Jets are built to stop the run and did.   The Raiders are terrible against the pass and Darnold has the Jets passing game going well.

Sure but the Raiders beat themselves v NYJ (and the refs didn't do them any favors either).

Oh geez... well, then all you said makes sense now.

It will be fun to see you cry year over year in having a GREAT QB but not being able to bring a Super Bowl win home.

If anything we should be excited about how these young guys are playing right now. They are depth for the future.

Yea... the weather. Way to start hedging your bet being at home on a game you should win. 🤣
nothing to do with hedging a bet......it doesn't take much of a football fan to realize how 30 mph winds and 40 mph gusts would favor the Raiders ability to run the ball over what the chiefs like to do on offense.....
