*Official 2019 Philadelphia Eagles Thread* - Season's over; Go Away Now... (2 Viewers)

It's tough when it's mostly Eagles fans. I might have to reach in the 5th for him but I really like what he can do this year.
I draft a few FFPC superflex leagues and got him once  in the 3rd and once in the 4th. Freaking STOKED about that. Considering how high the first couple guys go in those types of leagues.

My two local home leagues are filled with conservative drafters and I’m fairly confident I’ll get him in one if not both.

Depending how his ADP fluctuates I am going to try and get him with a late rd pick.  If he's healthy, fully healthy, which he is, how does he not put up similar 2016 production with a better supporting cast then he had.

I honestly hope they break the bank on Zeke.  If they do it hurts their cap.  Dont do it and he holds out.  Pretty nice situation for us.

And they still havent paid dak
It'll be interesting to see how they circumvent the cap.  I give props for drafting most of there good players but keeping that OL, Zeke, Lawrence, Dak, and Cooper under one roof is going to be challenging.  They also have Vander Esche to consider.

And Jaylon Smith

Jason Peters says he's open to playing guard to help extend his career. Peters at LG and Dillard LT

“Yeah, I’m going to play as long as I can,” Peters said via Philly Voice. “As long as I can do it, I’m going to go. Whether that’s tackle or guard, I can play all the way across the board.”

Finally. He can be an effective guard for another 2-3 years.

What a team guy

Zangaro's Tuesday Camp Observations:

The Eagles had their most intense practice of the summer to date on Tuesday morning. Temperatures were high and they had their first live tackling periods of training camp.  Tempers didn’t flare like we expected, but this was still an entertaining couple of hours.

We’ll start with the biggest play of the day:

1. It wasn’t how the Eagles drew it up, but the first-team offense got an 80-yard touchdown in the second live period of the day. Carson Wentz threw a quick pass to his right intended for Nelson Agholor, but the ball was tipped and went wider to JJ Arcega-Whiteside. The young rookie took off down the field and scored a touchdown after a diving Rasul Douglas couldn’t bring him down in pursuit.

“One and done, baby,” one offensive player shouted.

“Just how we drew it up,” said another.

2. The best part of the touchdown was the celebration. JJAW looked like he didn’t know what to do so he threw up the ball in the air and then did his special handshake with Agholor that they just came up with Monday. When rookie left tackle Andre Dillard was late getting to the party, head coach Doug Pederson yelled at him to get into the end zone and celebrate with his teammates.

3. After the second-team offense was forced to punt, the first teams took the field again. This was a little more conventional drive. The big play came when Wentz threw a nice deep ball to Agholor to beat Jim Schwartz’s sticks defense. That play was set up by an OPI from Charles Johnson on Sidney Jones. Jones might have gotten an interception if Johnson didn’t throw him to the ground like he did.

Eventually, Miles Sanders punched in about a 5-yard run for a touchdown, his first of camp.

“Oooh. Them boys look good, man,” defensive tackle Tim Jernigan said. “Hey, they surprised me today with the back-to-back drives. The first one, I was like, ‘OK, y’all got us, it was luck.’ But when they came and put that drive on us the second time, that caught me off guard with that one.”

4. On the first live session of the day, though, give plenty of credit to the Eagles’ defensive line for what it did in the trenches. Even without Fletcher Cox, who is still recovering from injury, Jernigan and Malik Jackson dominated that period up front. Jernigan keeps getting in the backfield for big plays.

5. Agholor had a really nice day. After a slow start in 1-on-1 drills, Agholor caught everything the rest of the morning. He’s having a good camp. One of his big catches came on a flea flicker. Nice design from Pederson.

6. Aside from his touchdown, Sanders also had a really nice 15-or-so-yard catch on a wheel route down the left sideline. He ended up having Vinny Curry in coverage on him and Sanders was able to get some room between them and Wentz noticed the mismatch and dropped a perfect pass in the breadbasket in rhythm. This was one of the first plays with live tackling and it got off to a good start.

After not getting much of a chance to catch passes at Penn State, Sanders really wanted to prove to the Eagles that he is capable.

7. Jeff Lurie got taken out pretty hard on the sideline during 11-on-11s, but the Eagles’ 67-year-old owner popped right back up, adjusted his white cap and didn’t miss a play. He’s a gamer.

8. Joe Ostman had a couple sacks against Jordan Mailata in team drills (one on a great spin move) and then beat him a few more times during OL vs. DL drills. But then Mailata was able to stand up Brandon Graham on another rep. Still, it’s probably not a great sign to see Ostman dominating Mailata. The two had a long chat after practice. We have to remember, this is all still relatively new for Mailata.

9. I watched OL vs. DL drills today instead of 7-on-7s. I’ll try to switch back and forth most days in pads. I did hear Jones had a nice pick on a bad throw from Wentz on the 7-on-7 field but I didn’t see it. Here are a few other notes from the OL vs. DL drills:

• Hassan Ridgeway showed off some technique, swim-moving his way through Matt Pryor. But on the next rep, Pryor stood him up for some revenge.

• Dillard looked good. He got Curry’s momentum working against him and got him wide of the quarterback and later stood up Daeshon Hall.

• While Treyvon Hester was put to the ground by Pryor once, he then went through rookie Nate Herbig twice. Hester and Ridgeway are making that competition for reserve DT fun.

10. No, Nate Sudfeld hasn’t been very good this camp so far, but today he had his best throw to date. During WR-DB 1-on-1s, he threw a beautiful deep ball to Shelton Gibson, who caught it for a TD with Jay Liggins in coverage. Wentz also had two pretty throws during this period, one to DeSean Jackson (of course) and one to Agholor.

:lmao:

Peters "I'm going to play as long as I can"...  DJax:  "What a team guy"
Sproles "I'm going to play as long as I can"...  DJax:  "What a bum.  He should retire already, he's hurting the team"
We're talking the best LT the game has since in many yrs. I'm not sold on our LG so if he can plug a hole then fine.

SProles needs to retire he's lost the one skill set he had over many and that was his speed. Again I thought we were already set at RB. I just don't honestly see anything Sproles could help this team with he couldn't from a desk job or holding a clipboard an some sort of an assistant. Also SProles the last 3 yrs has been saying this is my last season. Injury season of SB ok I get it don't want to go out like play one more year understandable. Something happens again. Ok next year is my last season. What happens if he gets hurt again? 2020 my last year now guys

Too bad we have an awful coach and GM who won't see it as well as you do, and he might make the team for no reason.  Damn.

I just think people are too scared to call the guy out. One of the few things I;ll get on Doug and Howie for is their infatuation with a 36 yrs old RB who's been hurt almost every year the last few years. I bet some of the same people defending Sproles are the ones saying Wentz is injury prone and we shouldve kept Foles. I wouldn't be going hard on the guy if he hadn't already said 3 yrs ago it was his last year only to keep saying it the last 3 yrs. If he wants to keep playing just say hey I changed my mind.

Sproles will retire after 2018

Sproles also explained on his personal blog that he had planned to retire after 2017 before a torn ACL limited his season to just three games.

"When my daughter Devyn looked me in the eye and told me I have to play one more year—well, that was it," the 35-year-old wrote.
Again had this not come out I would've said I think he should retire but hey thats on him when he should but he's literally toyed with it for 2 yrs already. Pretty soon we're gonna have Brett Favre level on is he gonna retire after this year. Nah I'll come back and sign in July again after OTAs and Mini camp

The guy is not Favre.  Or Wentz/Foles.  We're talking about our 4th RB here.  Smallwood or Adams is not the future of Philly and won't contribute to the team any more than Sproles will.  At a 4th RB position, like someone mentioned before, he ticks all the boxes and will be great for that group of backs.  Not sure why you're going off on the guy, let him change his mind for whatever reason he wants.  If Howie and Doug see great value on him being on the team, then I'm all for it.  I wouldn't lose sleep over a 4th RB like you are... the guy he beats out will have been nothing for our team in the future.

You’re making this read like they don’t make mistakes and they do.

And I’m sure we’ll see Sproles in the game within the first 2-3 series’ of week 1 as well. That’s not a 4th running back.

But if at the end of the game he's 3rd or 4th in RB touches and snaps, what is he?

Anyone that thinks Sproles is going to out-touch and/or out-snap (a healthy) Howard and Sanders isn't thinking rationally. He's most likely going to be Creed to the Eagles' Dunder Mifflin. Effective in short doses, doing only what he's capable of doing well, with no intentions of having him carry an episode.

I'm sure they make mistakes.  But I have full confidence that if he makes the team, he made the team for a reason.

The coaches aren't idiots. They're not going to pay this guy a ton of money for no reason. If he shows up to camp and looks slow like djax says he is, or smallwood/adams/whoever eventually gets cut looks good and could help our team more than him, then the coaches are going to have that conversation with him and he's not going to make the team.

What spot on the depth chart do you see for him this year?  And do you think a Smallwood would have a bigger/better overall impact on this team than him?

I doubt that happens considering how the Eagles don't trust a guy after fumbling. First few times Sanders fumbles Sproles is taking his snaps just like he's done the last few yrs with Ajayi, Clement, Adams etc

His usage over Sanders (a rookie) will be higher than you think.

Its not the touches, it’s the snaps and he’s going to be involved. I’d rather the split be between Howard, Sanders and whichever young guy wins the battle. Instead it will more than likely be a 3-man show and I don’t want Sproles involved.

As it stands today I’ll be shocked if he didn’t make the team.

I’d rather have Clement, Smallwood, Scott and Adams just battle. Simple as that. Sproles hasn’t been much for almost 3 years, injuries and age are breaking him down too. He’s done IMO

We really go with veterans over younger guys. Over the years we only play the young guys when there’s been injuries. Didn’t matter how good some have looked with their time either.

And I’m not like all up in arms over Sproles being back. I do value him as a veteran presence and hope that helps everyone else as well.

I agree what you are saying I'm just basing this on the fact that like Billichik Doug preaches ball security and Sanders has a history in college not protecting the ball (30% more fumbles then anyone else in the RB class) and given what happened to Josh Adams last year after some security issues I wouldn't be surprised Sproles taking Sanders snaps away. Its one of the reasons I said I'm surprised the Eagles drafted Miles Sanders because of his ball security issues.

I have no problem with a SB caliber team with a front office with a SB winning pedigree determining that they want JP at LT and Sproles as a depth RB. Both are insulated at their position with great talent which eases injury concerns. Leadership and stability from vets like this that are clearly invested in DP’s way is worth it’s weight in gold.

Good write up on today's practice:

The Eagles had a lengthy practice in pads that lasted from 9:15 to around 11:45 a.m. on Thursday.

Despite the long practice, there was just one injury. Miles Sanders left briefly after hurting his foot, but said he’s fine.

Plenty of observations before a day off Friday.

Let’s get right to it:

1. The Eagles did a ton of red zone work today in 11-on-11s, 7-on-7s and even 2-on-2s, so that’s where a lot of today’s observations will come from.

We’ll start with the first 11-on-11 period in the red zone that was dominated by the defense. Carson Wentz had two incompletions to Charles Johnson on the first two plays. After Jordan Howard punched in a touchdown, Wentz threw a short pass to Richard Rodgers who couldn’t get in the end zone and then threw an interception to Sidney Jones. It looked like there was a miscommunication and Rodgers never looked back.

2. Let’s talk about Jones. He's been great, but it’s not just him either. All three starting corners (Jones, Rasul Douglas and Avonte Maddox) have played well this summer. But Jones is really standing out to me. He’s making big plays every day and that interception wasn’t even his best moment of Thursday’s practice. That came in a later 11-on-11 period, when he read Wentz and jumped a pass in front of Nelson Agholor. It was nearly picked and he would have had a lot of green in front of him. Still, a huge play. I'm beginning to think he never gives that starting spot back.

3. After struggling a bit in the first red-zone period, Wentz dominated 2-on-2s in the red zone. He threw three pretty incredible touchdown passes to Agholor. The first was just on a rope on a slant. The second came after Agholor put a nifty move on Orlando Scandrick and Wentz hit him over the top. And the third was another perfect pass where only Agholor could get it and he did, leaping over a defender to haul it in.

During that period, Wentz also hit JJ Arcega-Whiteside on a fade. This wasn’t Wentz’s best day in team drills (he actually had a poor day there), but he dominated this period.

4. A late entry for the training camp hero of 2019 is 6-foot-6 receiver Carlton Agudosi, who made a few impressive plays today. He even got a shoutout from Doug Pederson following practice. During 7-on-7s, Agudosi came down with three touchdowns as he made catches over DBs. The first was a questionable ruling from the “back judge” because it looked like his momentum took him out of the back of the end zone, but we’ll count it. It was a perfect throw from Nate Sudfeld. The next one came over Jeremiah McKinnon in the back left corner of the end zone. And the third came on a catch over Jay Liggins in the right side of the end zone.

What impresses me about the Rutgers product is his spacial awareness. A lot of times these big receivers know how to use their bodies but don’t know how to get their feet in bounds. It seems like Agudosi always knows where he is. He doesn’t have much of a shot to make the roster, but could be a practice squad guy.

5. During defensive install (without linemen), the Eagles had Kamu Grugier-Hill, Nigel Bradham and Zach Brown out there. This is the first time I’ve seen Brown work with the ones in camp (although I’m told he was with the ones during install earlier in camp). The interesting thing was that it looked like Bradham was at the MIKE position. I’m not sure how this shakes out, but these three were the three I assumed would be the starters, but Brown has been working with the twos during team drills. Nate Gerry has been with the starters over him.

6. Just after Agholor and Wentz dominated the 2-on-2 period, they came back in 11-on-11s from the 20-yard line and tried a deep ball. Agholor got separation and Wentz threw an incredible pass, but Agholor couldn’t come down with it. It hit his hands, but Douglas might have knocked it away late. After the ball hit the ground, Agholor landed on Douglas and fake punched him a few times.

7. Grugier-Hill had another interception today. This one came in 7-on-7s, when he leaped up to snag a Wentz pass that had some velocity. Earlier in 7-on-7s, he broke up a pass on Greg Ward and nearly had another pick. KGH makes plays every day.

8. After the offense struggled for a bit to get into the end zone, Wentz hit Darren Sproles on a short slant and Sproles navigated his way across the goal line through a few flying bodies, one belonging to a charging Andrew Sendejo. He might be 36 now, but Sproles still gets up for this stuff. After he scored the touchdown, he popped to his feet and emphatically spiked the ball.

9. At times, I’ve seen Jordan Howard not look natural in a pass catcher role, but he made a nice grab today. Running down the right sideline, he plucked a ball out of the air over linebacker Joey Alfieri on a really nice toss from Wentz. Probably a 20-yard-or-so gain.

10. The funniest moment of Thursday’s practice came when Josh Hawkins knocked away a pass intended for Dallas Goedert near the right sideline. The ball hit the ground and the fans on that sideline (the practices at the NovaCare Complex have select fans invited) didn’t make a sound. So Hawkins asked for a little and they began to cheer. One even shouted, “Big play, Hawk!”

On the next snap, Hawkins was beaten for a touchdown on an inside move by Arcega-Whiteside, who got him leaning.

Eagles stock up / stock down after the first full week of training camp practices

Stock up

• RB Miles Sanders: After Sanders missed the entirety of spring practices, there were valid concerns that he wouldn't have enough time to develop before the start of the regular season. After the first week of camp, however, he has put some of those concerns to bed, as he already looks like the best running back on the team. Running backs don't need much grooming before they can be good players in the NFL, and if I'm Doug Pederson, I'd just start him Week 1 and see if I have something special right off the bat. To note, I don't think he'll do that, but there's little doubt in my mind that Sanders will be the starter at some point during the season.

Sanders did have an injury scare on Thursday, so we'll see if that will sideline him for any period of time, but his first week of camp on the field was encouraging.

• OT Andre Dillard: Dillard came into the NFL with a reputation as a stud in pass protection, and he hasn't disappointed. He lost a few battles early in camp in 11-on-11's, but has since settled in and is now consistently winning his matchups. If Dillard is forced to play this season, he'll immediately be better at LT than Halapolivaati Vaitai has been the last three years, in my opinion.

• DE Joe Ostman: It seems like everyone in the organization has been pumping up Ostman for about a year now, and practice observers are beginning to see why. He has been legitimately good, and not just in a "he's hustling more than everyone else" kind of way. He's been so intriguing to the Eagles, in fact, that Jim Schwartz is trying to find additional ways of using him. Recently in practices, Schwartz has been standing Ostman up over the center is something of a Joker role.

• LB Kamu Grugier-Hill: With Nigel Bradham still not participating in team drills, Grugier-Hill is the top linebacker on the team, and I don't think it's close.

• CB Sidney Jones: After following up his redshirt rookie season with a disappointing second season, Jones has stepped his game up this year, and is playing well. He has shown sticky coverage ability, as well as some impressive ball skills, getting work in on the outside and in the slot (but mostly on the outside). With Jalen Mills on PUP and Ronald Darby still not yet ready to play, the Eagles would be fine with a trio of Jones, Rasul Douglas, and Avonte Maddox if they have to start the season with those guys Week 1.

Stock down

• QB Clayton Thorson: I hate to pick on the rookie quarterback, but Thorson has been really bad so far. Yes, he was a fifth-round pick in a five-man draft class, but with each day, it's becoming harder and harder to justify giving him a spot on the roster.

• RB Corey Clement: Clement finally was able to participate in 7-on-7's on Thursday, but he still isn't ready to participate yet in team drills. With Sanders impressing, Jordan Howard almost certainly having a significant role in the offense, and the return of Darren Sproles, it's going to be hard for Clement to carve out a role of his own whenever he is ready to play.

• WR Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson: Hollins and Gibson were both 2017 draftees, and they are both struggling heading into the third year with the team. Hollins is sidelined with a new injury unrelated to the groin injury that kept him out for a year, and Gibson has not developed as the deep threat the team thought he could become.

• OT Jordan Mailata: While trying to learn the sport of football last year, Mailata struggled mightily in camp before the light bulb came on during the preseason games. This year, while trying to learn a new position (sort of -- he's being cross-trained at RT), he's struggling once again. We'll see if Mailata can turn it back on again during the preseason. I don't think it's a big surprise that a guy who just started playing football 15 months ago is struggling, but certainly, the hope was that he could have shown another big leap this summer. Perhaps expectations here should be more realistic?

• LB Zach Brown: His stats over the last three years say that Brown can play. However, he hasn't stood out in a positive way at all so far throughout camp, and he looks completely disinterested at times during non-team drills.

I've seen Eagles players go through cruise control during camp in the past, only to watch them turn it on when it matters, making any camp concerns look foolish. Fletcher Cox and DeSean Jackson come to mind there. However, Brown is joining a new team. He doesn't have the luxury of not having to prove himself.

Hmm. I figured Thorsen would be a project but not this bad. They may have to put him on the practice squad and keep Kessler as the 3rd string

Glad to hear about jones and ostman.

stuff about Hollins And brown not great.

clement news maybe makes the sproles signing a bit more sensible

Do they really need 3 on the active roster? If Wentz does go down again, I would think they'd sign a veteran backup and not rely on those two guys, unless they magically turn it on in the preseason games. Assuming they could stash one or both on the practice squad if they want them.

Most teams operate with 3 QBs especially if the starter has an injury history. I expect them to have 3 and at least Kessler has NFL experience.

My money is on them only keeping 2 QBs on the 53, and if they do 3 it's to protect Thorson (or some other QB they poach), not keep Kessler. Too many other positions where they need to carry depth for game days. Thorson (maybe fortunately) doesn't seem to be a threat to get snapped up if they try and put him on the PS and if something were to happen to Wentz, I think they are at peace with Sudfeld taking over and then making a move to find a back-up to him. There will be plenty of Cody Kessler-level replacement QBs to choose from.

Yep.  Go with 5 RBs and 2QBs is my vote.  Keep all the 'sproles sucks' people happy and let smallwood on the roster haha.

But yes, no need for Thorsen and I doubt anyone takes him for their roster especially if we do it as a late cut.  Most teams have their qb situation figured out by then and won't need some other developmental 3rd qb wasting a roster spot.

Djax's  "This guy sucks, he will be hurt or playing bad very soon like I told everyone" post in 3... 2.... 1....
It's still camp. I remember a quite a few young players the beat guys have hyped up over the years here during Camp only for them to look like they should never have been signed to a team once the games are played. I still hold to my original statement. I thought the guy was completely overhyped coming out of college riding the coattails of people thinking because Marcus Peters did there and his success he'd do it too. Then the Hammy injury which is no joke in the NFL. Even if he does become an all pro I'll still say the move to make at the time was go after someone else. My initial anger on the pick is it was made in the 2nd round where guys in the 2nd should be on the field playing pretty impactful snaps by the end of year 1 or by year 2. If Jones had fallen further down the board to the 4th or 5th round I had always said I wouldn't mind taking him at that time. 2nd round was just too risky then for me. They past on JuJu and Kamara for the guy too as well as Dion Dawkins and Cooper Kupp. Plus they had no 3rd rounder that year. I honestly would've traded to maybe the back of the 2nd if I could have gotten a 3rd or some extra picks and snuck into the later of the 3rd.

I really like this signing for the Eagles Jonathan Cyprien. Dude can flat-out hit and was disappointed we didn't draft the guy. He was out all last year in Tenn with an ACL but if health he can provide good depth at Safety and has experience as an LB in Nickel situations. Its low risk high reward. Also if he outplays Sendajo and we cut Sendajo it helps the comp picks more for next year. The Eagles also signed another TE Alex Ellis who I don't know much about other then he did play for the Volunteers of Tenn in college and don't remember him ever having a huge impact there.
