*** Official 2022 PGA Tour Thread - Memorial Tournament, LIV list leaked- It's all Paulina's Fault **** (2 Viewers)

look, i won’t overcomplicate this.  this is like mlb players fighting with owners.  millionaires fighting over billions.  i won’t pretend to care where these guys play if we or our country doesn’t care that 15 of the 19 terrorists on 9/11 were saudi.

You know what matters ... the Masters.  The US Open.  The Open Championship (British).  Everything else is meaningless.  PGA... blah.  TPC ...zzz.  Fed Ex ... zzz

Those three best majors will still have great fields and that's all that matters.

THe FedEx might be meaningless but the 15 mill for the winner I guess isn't
The amount of work you have to do get to that level, then beat out 120, 60, then 30 of the worlds best over a season then a 4 week period - it's extraordinary to pull it off..  If guaranteed LIV or endorsements are a way to make that same $ why fight it out.  And they are for the top players.  DJ is getting $120M.  He'd have to win about 7 FedEx Cups or 30 majors.  And for the lower players, a $1M check is simply huge when they have almost no chance of winning a FedEx and are bouncing around the DP or Asian Tour.

This really comes down to guaranteed money and how much time it takes to make that money.   NBA, MLB ... guys are pulling $300M guaranteed even if they don't play a single game ... oh, i'm hurt.  oh, i'm taking a rest game.  The lower guys might get $3M/year guaranteed.  Imagine if they only got paid by each HR they hit, or each 3 pointer they made.  They may not last a month in the leagues.

I hate Norman, but guaranteed money is all that matters beyond the majors.

I only enter for thurs-sun
If you never been I would put in for everything. Practice rounds are where it's at imo. I get you might not see everyone and it's not competitive but easier walking the course, plus you get to see guys try different stuff they won't do in real round etc.   You just have to be ok if you don't see someone you want

This is not my goal, but haven't I read in here about people reselling their tickets at the risk of a perma-ban by Augusta from then on?  Or are the tickets in a person's name that they have to show ID to prove they should be able to get in?  Just curious and trying to remember what I've read here.

ETA: I know I won't win tickets.  Just have never applied so I'm interested in the process.

https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/34026477/hideki-matsuyama-disqualified-use-non-conforming-3-wood-first-round-memorial

PGA Tour chief referee Steve Rintoul said the tour became aware of the issue after someone emailed a photograph of the 3-wood that had been posted to Instagram. Rintoul said rules officials were immediately sent to find Matsuyama, who was playing the first hole at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

golf nerds are unreal
This isn’t ‘Nam. There are rules.

If Rafa can get healthy and do his thing at the French, today will have gone from great to AMAZING.

Welp....never had a score like that.  💰

All possible. I guess you're lucky to win at all. I got Monday tix on my first try a couple years ago. I suppose that means "never again".
A friend won practice rounds back in 2006 I believe. We went on the Tuesday. Ever since (aside from the last 2 ) I put my name in and haven't won. Would have thought by now my name would have come up at least once.

I didn't put my name in the last 2 years due to covid but will try again for 2023.

Just curious what the LIV guys are going to do most of the year (besides spend money). I thought I saw they only have 8 events scheduled for the entire year. Can they play on other tours?

Any event not PGA associated will welcome them with open arms.  Technically they can't be barred from being a sponsors exemption on PGA Tour.  I mean they invite douches like Tony Romo and Mark Rypien that aren't PGA members.  Pretty sure DJ and Phil will get sponsors invites to their favorite 5 events (# allowed per year).  Would expect to see Phil at Torrey and similar events.

You can take pictures also during practice rounds (I think this is still allowed). I have been practice rounds, par 3 and final round. I would prefer Thu-Sun but will take anything. Great experience. My wife enjoys seeing the long toilet lines for the men.

My father was involved in starting many pro leagues (ABA, WHA, World Team Tennis, Womens Volleyball and European Basketball League). LIV sounds most like World Team Tennis as they try to make a team sport out of mostly an individual sport (at least at the pro level). They tried to get the fans to yell supporting the teams during serves. Tough to get the polite tennis fans to get rowdy. In all those leagues, especially ABA and WHA they tried to lure athletes with big money. Of course many of the teams had problems making payroll and the ultimate objective was to merge with the established leagues. Many of the "trades" made were to improve attendance. Why I continue to believe pro sports will eventually just become scripted like pro wrestling.

Yeah, I was gonna say the NBA says "Hi", but whatever.

douches?

If I could sign for $150 Mill....I might relax a little too.
Well up until this point he has won $72 million in earnings only. That doesn't include any endorsements. So that plus Gretzky money has me thinking he really wasn't that stressed to begin with ;)

If it was you or me, I'd agree.  But he's not the sharpest Titleist in the bag, right?  And he can "earn" twice his lifetime on-course earnings in three years, in 24 tournaments, GURANTEED.

I'd like to think I would reject the blood-money, but most of these dudes have already taken Chinese or Saudi money already.  And even if they haven't, how cool is Disney?  Or Nike?  Or Adidas?  Where is the line.

I'd love to say I'd be pure.  Can't say it.

I'm not really concerned about the "blood money" aspect .....just saying not sure how stressed I'd be with probably the 100 million I already had.   Is there really a need for the other 100 mill to be more relaxed?

Issues I'll never have to worry about :)

Fair.  DJ is so dumb he probably doesn't realize what family he married in to.

So reports are Dechambeau and Reed are jumping ship...... possibly Fowler

THey sure are making it harder and harder to root for this tour..... its like the NWO vs WWF right now...... :)

Kevin Na and Bryson on the same team would be 6 hour rounds

All the biggest pains in the ### taking the money. Shocker. Certainly wont miss watching those two jerks. Guessing the Saudis offered them unlimited free drops or something....

Would be sad to see Fowler go, as he's a good guy. But he's obviously struggling right now and who knows if he ever makes it back close to elite status (he was never there anyway). Clearly he will make a LOT more money on the Saudi tour.

Wondering if Matthew Wolfe gets tempted. Another guy who is a much bigger name than he deserves to be (based on his accomplishments) and his game is a complete mess right now mentally (walked off mid-round of his US open qualifier on Monday after putting a drive in the water).

Yeah been rooting for RIckie he was actually ranked 4th in the world at one point.... tough seeing it

Wolfe is a 23 year old kid, what did he steal your chick or something?

Not all. I like the kid a lot. Its just really tough watching him right now. I know he said he's dealing with some mental health issues, which are obviously destroying his game right now.

Just mean that he's a little more famous that he maybe deserves to be (probably because of his super unique swing)

Every time you see him now, he's like +13 and missing the cut by 8 shots.  Maybe (hopefully) he figures it out but I think there's a real chance this is a David Duval situation (only without all the 13 wins and at a much younger age)

this makes more sense, i don’t see him going to that tour though because i think the backlash would really mess with him mentally.

The money makes this an obvious yes for a lot of these guys, I understand that, but what I don’t get is why are the Saudi’s doing this? Just a pure flex? The PGA tour doesn’t do huge ratings for non-majors without Tiger and people are really going to tune in to watch substandard tournaments with 1/20 of a competitive field? Doesn’t make sense.

We should probably create a new thread for the LIV but sorry, these team names reads like one of my fantasy leagues

Dustin Johnson – 4 Aces; Shaun Norris, Oliver Bekker, Kevin Yuan

Graeme McDowell – Niblicks; Bernd Wiesberger, Turk Petit, Oliver Fisher

Ian Poulter – Majesticks; Lee Westwood, Sam Horsfield, Laurie Canter

Kevin Na – Iron Heads; Sadom Kaewkanjana, Hideto Tanihara, Viraj Madappa

Louis Oosthuizen – Stinger; Henni Du Plessis, Charl Schwartzel, Branden Grace

Martin Kaymer – Cleeks; Pablo Larrazabal, JC Ritchie, Ian Snyman

Peter Uihlein – Crushers; Richard Bland, Phachara Khongwatmai, Travis Smyth

Phil Mickelson – Hy Flyers; Justin Harding, Ratchanon Chantananuwat, Chase Koepka

Sergio Garcia – Fire Balls; David Puig, James Piot, Jediah Morgan

Sihwan Kim – Smash; Scott Vincent, Jinichiro Kozuma, Itthipat Buranatanyarat

Talor Gooch – Torque; Hudson Swafford, Adrian Otaegui, Andy Ogletree

Wade Ormsby – Punch; Matt Jones, Ryosuke Kino####a, Blake Windred

It's a strange investment that differs from the usual sportswashing model employed in soccer and Formula 1.  In those sports, the Saudis and their Gulf neighbors have bought into existing structures and used their money to gain influence from within.

LIV represents a much more confrontational model that will make golf's global status quo furious even if they're able to produce a successful product (which seems questionable).
