Am I correct that Qatar will be the first team eliminated from the WC if Ecuador and Holland draw today? Assuming this 3-1 score line holds up for Senegal in injury time.
 
By the way, this Qatar is the Qatar I was expecting. Even with the loss today, they played much much better than the first game. a 2 goal loss is actually a little harsh IMO.
 
Great interview with GGG and Southgate. I see similarities between them. Both with possibly more success than just about any manager for their countries but both aren’t wanted by large parts of their fan base and the opinion is that the teams are winning despite them versus because of them.
 
USA def has something to play for here, a win means that all they need to do vs Iran is draw in order to advance.

A draw would guarantee that we advance with a win vs Iran.

A loss opens us up to the scenario - even if unlikely - that we could beat Iran and still be eliminated if Wales beats England and has a better goal differential or - if tied on that - score more goals that us. It also clinches the spot for England which gives them the opportunity to sit players vs Wales if they so choose.

In short - play to win the game just like Coach Herm says.

I expect a hybrid lineup of at least 5 changes today but it should still look decent. Multiple changes were likely to have happened no matter what the group state is so this won't be a huge surprise to anyone.

The balancing act that the coaching staff needs to deal with it whether it is more likely to get a point today and risk losing key players for the Iran game or make sure key players are healthy and rested for Iran and then hope Wales does not win by multiple goals.

I feel like Wales winning by multiple goals is the longest of long shots right now even if England has nothing to play for. The Wales team is absolutely cooked physically. They have no depth to sub in against England. They lost their starting keeper and every single English sub would be instant stars on the Wales team, much less starters. Throw in the long hated sporting rivalry between the two countries as well.,

Crazier things have happened of course but from a game theory stand point, it seems a bad choice to protect against a Wales multiple goal win vs making sure your best players are on the field against Iran.
 
And margin could matter as well.

A 1-goal loss means if we win vs Iran Wales would have to win by at least 2.

A 2-goal loss means if we win by the same margin as Wales it comes down to goals scored or - gulp - draw lots

A 3 or more goal loss pretty much would make it where we have to clobber Iran if Wales wins and that may not be enough.

If we beat England by 3 or more we could still advance with a loss and a n England tie vs Wales. And again if that is unlikely it matters and as Iran showed - a red card can really but other things into play.

yes you are correct. If you take a peak at Zigg's Qatar thread where he is there, he talks about this seeing it in the stadiums. People were afraid to travel to Qatar it appears. Qatar and FIFA are announcing sell outs every where, so it is hard to know what the exact ticket sales are.

It does not matter too much since Qatar was going to lose a ridiculous amount of money on the WC no matter what the attendance was but they barely care.

Hopefully a lot more people will travel in 2026!

There's a lot of empty seats. And Qatar is announcing official attendance like this
Qatar vs Ecuador - 67,372 (Stadium capacity = 60,000)
England vs Iran - 45,334 (Stadium capacity = 40,000)
Senegal vs Netherlands - 41,721 (Stadium capacity = 40,000)

Honestly, if you told me the tickets would have been free I still wouldn’t pay to travel there and deal with their rules. I’m happy to watch and enjoy the tournament but that would have been a bridge too far for me.

Yep. Similar thought process here. Couldn't imagine living in tents for $200/night. Add that to a small local population, a little FIFA corruption and this is the result.

I can’t for the life of me understand why they didn’t take that to VAR. I am okay with the call, but on replay I didn’t really think the offsides player interferes with the goalie

If Ecuador can steal this it really puts Senegal in a pickle - they would need to win by 3 to advance (barring a miracle Qatar result)

We'll see if Ecuador has done the math. Conceding 1 goal doesn't change anything - a draw would get them through same as if they tie here. But getting 1 goal here is as good as scoring 3 based on what it does to the tiebreaker stuff. They should go full attack.

Laughing at the hype for "the most important match in US history". I know it's their job to get people to watch but I wish these analysts could be honest and break down the significance of the Iran victory and why this match isn't that important. I know, wishful thinking.

Not that you guys should care about my personal life, but I tee off in an hour and am debating whether to have it on the radio (cart speaker) or complete shut off all electronics as I have it set to record (doable with effort by me). I intend to do the former if we know that USA isn’t playing to win and the latter if we are.

Any indication yet? I assume the starting lineup would be the indicator?
