Anyone going to watch? It's doubtful that either Canada or the US will advance to the elimination stage as only two from each pool get to the quarterfinals.

New Zealand is the defending champ.

With Japan pulling a massive upset over South Africa, coupled with the US loss to Samoa, whatever tiny chance the Eagles had to advance from their group is surely gone. Better luck next time US Rugby - Japan 2019.

Japan beating RSA is the biggest upset ever in the RWC.

Japan v Scotland tomorrow is now a huge game. Not one I had planned to watch, but may have to change my plans. Japan is suddenly everyone's darling team of the tournament.

Huge matches today.

Japan has an early 3-0 lead vs Samoa

Scotland play Austrailia

England play RSA

It's England vs Australia and Scotland vs RSA.

England most likely out without a win. Tough group with 3 of the top 5 in the world prior to the World Cup.

Japan leads 20-0 near halftime. I bet Japan +7.5.

In the next game, I took Scotland +14.5 vs RSA. I will see if I can get it on DTV.

Its stupid to have 20 teams in the RWC finals imo - just prolongs the event and perhaps brings in a bit more money, but teams like USA, Georgia, Uruguay, Namibia really have no business in this tournament. SAF has a +120 point differential after 4 games, even though they lost one. There are 5 teams with a point differential of -50 or more after 4 games, including USA at -96. Uruguay is -139 after just 3 games. England is out of the tournament, as host, and still has to play Uruguay - what a completely worthless exercise.

Let's go - cleared my calendar this afternoon and will have the opening game on in my garage man-cave. Of all the guys I invited over to my watch party, I've got two maybe's and one guy who might make the second half. NZ v France is easily the greatest RWC group game I can ever recall with two giants going head to head in a massive group game due to the crappy seeding/draw system they used for this tournament. It sucks, but its awesome at the same time.

Probably watching alone with my dog, but I'M JACKED TO THE T*TS! for this game!

did we ever find out who won the 2015 rugby match or what take that to the bank brohans

What station has the games on? Is this a pay per view or carried on cable tv?

NBC apparently has the rights, but don't know what channel/streaming options they will use, with the USA failing to qualify idk if they'll be putting too much effort into it

Every game will be televised live on either Peacock or NBC.

Happy to answer any questions as to what the **** is going on from newbies to the game, but there are a few decent "rugby explained to (American) football fans" videos out there

Is England-Argentina expected to be close? I’m assuming a lot of these group stage matches with the heavyweights will be blowouts.

Rugby really has replay figured out, very refreshing. I watched the replay of France-NZ this morning - the contrast between how much action you get in rugby compared to college football is really stark. Rugby is such a better tv product. Another thing that was refreshing is how the players treated the referee - are the players just too tired for theatrics? They seem to just take their medicine and move on.

Yes it’s expected to be a good matchup, totally apart from the historical hatred between them. Freakin George Ford the England #10 just hit two drop goals from midfield in the span of about 3 minutes. England are playing with 14 men due to an early red card. But yeah, blowouts are common in the group stage games. Was hilarious for me to see Romania leading Ireland 5-0 early today. Next time I checked Ireland were up by 50. Final was 82-8.

* Ford just hit his third drop goal of the half, this one a bit closer in.

One week in the books and I would say the big marquee games (France-NZ; S.Africa-Scotland) rose to the occasion, although both were comfortable wins in the end. I was disappointed with NZ. After a strong start they lost composure and were no match for the French in the second half. They should still have no problem getting through to the quarter-finals but will have to play much better to advance from there.

It was fun to see Romania take an early lead with a try in the first few minutes, which I saw just before leaving for some errands and then returned to see the final score of 82-8. Poor Romania gets S.Africa next and that score might be even worse.

The best game I saw in the first round by far was Wales-Fiji. What a fantastic last 10 minutes in that one with a massive gut-puch knock-on at the end. Biggest shocker was England dominating Argentina after going down a man very early. After looking great over the past year or so, Argentina looked like a minnow nation. You would never know England were playing with 14 from the game action. Fantastic performance by George Ford - a player I wasn't really familiar with at all had the best game of the week. I'm traveling the next couple days but will be home for the England-Japan game on Sunday - probably the only game this round that interests me.

I'm going to be in Ireland when they play S. Africa. Unfortunately we had a tour booked the same day of the match and can't change it. Would have been fun to be in a pub in Galway watching it. Went to Ireland/France in Dublin in 2019 and it was awesome.

I have an English friend who invited me to the World Cup this year. Could not make it happen, and I got photos from the Wales/Fiji match. Uggh.

That reminds me of the first time I went to Dublin and they were playing Mayo in a GAA football final replay at the same time I had booked the Guinness tour

So Antoine Dupont has a confirmed cheekbone fracture but has not yet been ruled out of the World Cup. A fantastic player who I think even rival fans hate to see injured because it is such a joy to see him play, even as he's completely thrashing your team. France probably don't need him until the semi-finals anyway, which are on October 21-22.

Tomorrow is going to be huge. I'm once again expecting sporadic participation in my garage watch party but am totally jacked for this game already and will probably have a few racks of ribs on the smoker just in case some of my degenerate friends abandon their families on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to come watch the rugby with me. Two massive scrums and two fantastically scrappy scum-halves should make for some great drama. Much is being made of the South African 7-1 split in the reserves, which is truly insane but also in a way intimidating. My wife is Irish and we spent our honeymoon in Ireland decades ago, always have had a soft spot for them in rugby as well as soccer, music and whiskey. So while I am 99% neutral for this game, I probably would pick Ireland given my druthers. Mostly just hoping to see a classic south v north world cup battle.

What a game. That was awesome. Ireland were better but not by much. Either team could win a rematch game, which seems likely to happen in October.

Wales thumped Australia and it looks very likely that northern hemisphere teams will win all 4 pool groups (assuming Ireland hold serve against Scotland.) I'd expect that's never happened before.

Horrendous officiating in the Japan/Samoa game, every single lineout from Japan is not even close to straight and they're just turning a blind eye

Quarter final matchups:

Wales v Argentina (Saturday 11am EST)
Ireland v New Zealand (Saturday 3pm EST)
England v Fiji (Sunday 11am EST - so perfectly timed into NFL if you're not watching another awful London game)
France v South Africa (Sunday 3pm EST)

Italy, Scotland, Australia and Japan secure qualification (edit - to the next World Cup) after finishing third in their respective pools, standout performers however were Portugal, getting their first win at a World Cup over Fiji with a last minute try to add to the previous draw against Georgia, although that naturally still gave Fiji the losing bonus point to comically eliminate Australia

This will be an incredible weekend. I’ve got to get my affairs in order this week so I can enjoy both days. New Zealand will need to play a perfect game to have a chance against Ireland, which seems really strange to say. None of my Kiwi friends have any hope. It seems like one of those games where we’ll know after the first 15 minutes or so whether it’s going to be a good one or if the Irish are just too good.

Hard for me to even think about Sunday but that’s also going to be fantastic.

I love that Ireland competes as the island rather than the political entity. They should do that in other stuff
