*** Official 2024-25 NHL, back to Rangers talk *** (1 Viewer)

3rd period was a defensive clinic by the Americans. Congrats. Hope we get another crack at you Thursday.

Feel free to beat the Swedes Monday, even tho it won't matter to you.

<rockaction> "those Polish folk were so disrespectful to the Germans in 1939. Such a break in protocol" </rockaction>

Dude, you need to chill. You lost. Deal with it. Don't take it out on me.

And I'm sorry not everybody in the country is contrite enough about Dear Leader. Lots of us don't like him or the stuff he says. Even the majority of people voting for him think he's a bit of a crackpot.

Not sure how many Canadians are actually on this board but I can say without any doubt whatsoever, Canada has never been more unified and the booing is part of that. I get what rock is saying but the current situation has never occurred previously … we are in uncharted waters with one leader mocking and suggesting a takeover of our country. You can try and make comparisons from the past but they do not exist … this is just different.

Good win by the US! Hope for a redo in the finals.

Let’s leave politics out of it - I’m an American and I love Canada. Not the players’ fault for the current environment -
they’re just trying to win a hockey game, not unlike the Miracle on Ice team did during the Cold War.

Don't invade me bro.

I think there would be open rebellion to the point of deposing him if he tried that. There would be a lot of us dead over here.
Like so many have pushed back on him so far?

Right. You seem want an apology from the citizenry for Dear Leader's idiotic talk about idiotic subjects. You're not likely to get it. We are not our brothers' keeper. My opinion about the man has long been known around these parts. We just don't discuss it anymore here.

You want to boo the anthem because of fantastical threats, go ahead. You're getting trolled and looking badly to a lot of Americans in the process. You probably don't care about that, but that was part of my original point.

I used to be an avid viewer of the NHL, but now it's an occasional thing. Don't have access to Red Wings games without buying a package that isn't worth it to me while they've been having their down stretch. It's weird to me to be watching a game like this and I don't know who most of the players are anymore.

Is Canada really some huge line that if he crosses it, people rise up? I have always always thought that but right now the USA seems like a nation of cowards letting DT and EM do whatever they want.

I don't know. I think there are more people than I thought that support annexing Canada. Like a quarter of the populace. I thought it was more like ten percent, tops.

I don't think so. If Canada and Sweden win, Canada beating Sweden is first time breaker.

Head-to-head is the first tiebreaker, but Canada couldn't win in OT if Sweden wins in regulation. They'd have to win in regulation also, which I think they will.

Not that they would do it, but the U.S. could conceivably tank the Sweden game and keep Canada out of the final.

If Canada first wins in OT though, that would give them 2 points. A US regulation loss to Sweden would give Sweden 3 points and a spot in the final. Just a pipe dream though - you know the US doesn’t want to lay down against Sweden and have to play them again, and wants to take on Canada again.

You're both right in that Canada plays first. If they don't win in regulation it's on the table.

They should beat Finland but again... goalies

Red Wing Dylan Larkin is a beast and super underrated imo. Maybe until this tournament. Hope it's his "coming out party" even though he's been a stud a long time.

He is gritty and tough as hell but also an incredible skater and highly skilled.

He's in the mold of Sidney Crosby though not at the same level, obviously.

I mostly check their ESPN page for results and watch a few highlights. Yes, good player though feels like they are lacking a superstar at this point still. Yzerman seems to have done a decent job rebuilding the roster the last couple of years though.

The game today inspired me to go watch again the HBO documentary on the Miracle on Ice. I actually have a pretty good collection of Wings and US hockey games I've picked up along the way, plus a few other worthy ones:

Most every Wings playoff game from all rounds from their championships in 97, 98, 2002 and 2008.
All four Wings championship videos
1972 Summit Series between Canada and USSR.
HBO Miracle on Ice Documentary, plus a copy of the entire original game broadcast.
1987 Canada Cup
1996 World Cup of Hockey
Fight Night at the Joe full game, plus a local documentary
1995 Wings-Canadiens game that resulted in Patrick Roy getting traded
Couple of Datsyuk highlight videos.
30 for 30 on Fetisov
Konstantinov's Hits highlight video
The Russian Five documentary
Red Army documentary
2014 US-Russia Olympic overtime shootout, starring TJ Oshe

Makes for good viewing during those slow summer months when I'm pedaling the exercise bike for an hour.

Maybe beyond Pavel Bure, don’t think I’ve ever seen a faster skater than McDavid.
It's stunning. I haven't watched all the hockey in my life but I've watched a bunch. IMO he's the best player of all time already.
@Zegras11 laughed at this. Let me amend it slightly - he's the most skilled hockey player I've ever seen and it's not really close.
Did you see Lemieux play?
Yes and it was glorious:

lol, hated that guy when he was on the Devils...he was effective.

Yeah he was the consummate guy you hated when he was on the other team but loved when he was on yours. Kind of like yesterday’s Brad Marchand.

Missed this thread until now. I've watched all 4 games (missed the first period of Finland-Sweden) and it's been a lot of fun. Great skill all over, but poor coach scheme implementation with the small number of practices - basically what we would all prefer to see in the NHL where good coaches squeeze the life out of the game. I also watched as much of the 96 WCoH as I could at the time (even got cable in my dorm room for it) and I'm hoping for a repeat result. It's nice that the US gets a game break for Matthew Tkachuk to heal up. My brother played with Keith Tkachuk on youth national teams before falling out of the pool (Select 17, Select 18 I think they were called - played the Soviets when they were still Soviets), and it's fun to watch his sons playing like he did.

We’re still talking about Claude Lemieux I assume? 😂

Well, i called game a little prematurely. Yikes. Close call.
Wow, my kid rebooted the router at 4-1 and I didn't bother turning it back on (I can't see a TV from my work desk unless I move the chair a bit, so I basically just listened for excited announcers and snuck a look from time to time). 4-3 with a couple of minutes left isn't something I expected. Finns made a really good showing in this tournament other than that US 3rd period.

This booing of the anthem is getting a lot of attention. But, it has happened before. On one of the recent Oilers' playoff runs, the Canadian national anthem was booed in the American arena. How did Oilers' fans react when the teams played in Edmonton? We loudly sang both anthems when they were played. Not sure how much press this got in the USA, but it was big news here.
Just sayin'.

As much as I'd like to see the US equalize and go on to win... I don't think extra time on the ice is worth it.

Got up at 3:30 AM on Monday and drove the 8.5 hours (With terrible lake effect conditions for 5) from Rochester to Boston with my Son and Daughter to catch the 1pm Canada vs Finland. Saw McDavid, MacKinnnon and Crosby all score a goal for Team Canada, jumped back in the car and then drove the 7 hours back home with better road conditions. Just got home. An experience my kids and I will never forget!

McAvoy out for Thursday but getting Quinn Hughes as a replacement - nice
I'm reading quite a bit of a discussion on this one. I believe they would need anther D-man to be unavailable before Hughes can play. Without Mcavoy they still have 6. Reasoning is that Canada got to include Harley only after they were short 2 defensemen (Theodore and then Makar, who was ill) . Harley wasn't even allowed to practice with the team until Makar was officially ruled out. Anyway, I'm sure this will be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. :sarcasm:

The good news is the Boston fans should be their usual respectful selves on Thursday.
