*** Official 2025-26 NHL, FREE AGENT SEASON*** (1 Viewer)

I just want the Red Wings to do something significant. Their off-season moves in recent years have mostly been underwhelming if not bad.

****ing PAnthers, getting the band back together again.
Ekblad took the most ridiculous home town discount that I can recall. 8 years, $6.1M/year.
Don't understand why Ekblad and Bennett took smaller paydays. I mean it's not like they have a model franchise with guys that love each other, two Cups, a fantastic coach that they'll run through a brick wall far, no state income tax, and great weather. In all seriousness, at least they probably overpaid Marchand, but that's a small price to pay for them and a clear reward for coming in and helping them over the top again.

Sounds like they're in on K'Andre Miller, which will probably happen once the Rangers overpay Gavrikov in a few hours (as guru said above).

Truly amazing that Sweeney did this...it is more amazing he is still in a position to make this move...a team screaming for skill gives a grinder 5 years...this is what happens when you have virtually no farm-system so now you overpay players like this.

Gavrikov to Rangers, 7x7 contract. Not as bad as i expected to be honest.
Now, the Rangers have to make some moves.
miller heading to carolina for a 1 and 4? man, miller is so milquetoast. doesn’t shoot or hit. TOs galore. moving on from him is absolutely the correct move. he eats minutes, just isn’t very good.

D-Bag Perry to the Kings. I am going on hiatus. I can't root for that whiny baby.
This has to be the funniest signing ever. No player has ever been hated more by a fanbase than Kings fans hating on Perry.

Can't wait to see them boo when he scores.
I never ever thought in a million years this would happen. Kings fans are revolting. He will be the first home player to get booed continuously when he has the puck.

For all the abuse Chris Drury gets, he had a master class day with the Gavrikov signing, Will Cuylle re-signing at a reasonable price, and a haul for K’Andre.

Yeah, I'm definitely no Drury fan, but this offseason we swapped
CK20 and K. Miller (both guys everyone knew were getting traded/gone)
for
Gavrikov
Two prospects (Terrance & Morrow)
2026 1st & 2nd round pick
~$7M in cap space (Kreider salary and the difference between Gavrikov & Millers salary)

Rangers have a relatively full roster and a little cap space if need be. And with a two firsts next year, we can make a move at the deadline.
That's the good. The bad is it appears Eichel, Kaprizov and McDavid will be locked up with extensions, effectively ending the dream of a massive offseason pickup for 2026-2027. Right now team looks good enough for the playoffs, but not good enough to compete with healthy top 4-5 teams in the league in a playoff series so meh.

Some teams I really don't know what they're doing during free agency. Kings and Bruins really had me scratching my head. And the Canucks re-signed basically their mediocre team from last year to play it back.
Edmonton did what they had to do with Bouchard, but man they are hamstrung with 4 huge contracts. And they still need a goalie.
I kinda like what the Maple Leafs did. Brought back Tavares on a cheap deal was pretty necessary. Locked up Knies. They knew they couldn't keep Marner around so they did some decent business and got Roy. We'll see how Maccelli works out. But man oh man, if it doesn't happen in the next year or two, Leafs only have 2 picks in the top 3 rounds over the next few years, after only have a 2nd and 3rd this year.

Big prize this year is Ehlers still unsigned and it looks like he is in no rush to sign either. I'm really not sure where he's going, but I wouldn't want him on my team on the contract he is probably looking for and going to get. 5+years, 8.5M/year?

Fully agree with you on these points. What hasn't been discussed yet is that the Rangers have some more ammo now to make some moves at the deadline if they feel they're close. They've been very barren on draft picks in recent years, so nice to see that they have some ammo.

Never expected McDavid to make it to free agency, and was on the fence about Eichel and Kaprizov. But at least it's known now that they won't be available, so Drury doesn't have to operate with next year's offseason in mind and focus on the now.

ETA: really interested to see what Sullivan and his gang can do with the new guys, particularly Scott Morrow. He's the forgotten guy in the K'Andre trade, but has a lot of talent - watched him closely when he was at UMass.

i am curious about the k miller trade. he was an RFA, requiring compensation of a 1 and 3. why did carolina trade for him and give up a 1,2 and morrow when they could’ve sheeted him knowing that the rangers were looking to deal and move him.

It's a fair question. My guess is that they knew other teams (like Detroit) were also circling around him and were willing to pay that high of a price to get the guy they wanted.

My question is how Key will fit into Brind/amour's defensively responsible system that doesn't seem to place a high value on creativity. They're a well-run franchise though (notwithstanding the Rantanen disaster), so clearly they think he has it in him to play within their mindset.

this really reminds me of the skjei deal to carolina, but he only brought back a 1. doesn’t really hit or block or score, high draft pick with upside that just seems to play, but isn’t hard to play against.

Good call on Skjei - you’re not alone
