Gonna be a lot of Seinfeld and "such a Karen" kind of references if those two are significant

Native Floridian, we sustained several major hurricanes last year, the open roof on the Trop in St Pete is a reminder of what can happen.
Many Floridians lost their homes or had to rebuild them entirely, some folks simply moved on or moved away

-We don't typically see major hurricanes barreling thru large cities here in Florida on a yearly basis, many years we just get a good scare or brush of the coastline
Last year we got the full brunt of a few of them, we're still here and we're still standing

-I always encourage folks to stay in their homes unless they absolutely are in a flood zone, many times the places people end up evacuating to, those places end up being in the path of the storm.
It's difficult sometimes to get back to your home so you end up stuck in a hotel for 5 days and the storm is over in a matter of hours.
Yep you're gonna lose power and generators only do so much, plus generators are mostly useless for condos and apartments, you'll choke out trying to use them inside

-Have some supplies on hand now, don't wait until the entire city is alerted and everyone makes a mad dash for bottled water, these people never drink water any other time but suddenly a storm approaches and they need 4 cases of it to stack up in the garage never to be used...the videos of people storming the Home Depots and Publix make me laugh and cry at the same time.

-Some of the worst parts of the Hurricanes last year for us in South Florida were tornados that were spawned from Hurricanes that actually made landfall on the other side of the State
I **** you not, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin County were pelted with tornadoes that caused a lot of damage and I believe we lost a few lives from those tornadoes. It's not always the storm surge that gets you and you don't have to be in a direct line or path to be impacted.

Good post.
I'm a Hugo veteran. Sure that was 1989, a long time ago. But it sticks with you. You can't tell now that it happened, but if you are an old fart like me, you can drive around and point out where things are different because of Hugo.
Growing up in Charleston, we always had close calls, and people never expected one to hit us directly. Except for my parents' generation, they all talked about Gracie in 1959.
They knew that no matter what, eventually one would get close or direct hit.

I second the stock up now call, and join you in the comments on people hoarding up on water. Just crazy.

So many prepping thoughts and suggestions.
My main suggestion after stocking up, is remember to pick up things in your yard, or tie it down.

Another word of caution for those that watch the TWC as their main source of info when these storms approach, I can almost assure you Floridians in the path or suggested path of an approaching storm are not watching that network. They watch local TV and I have a couple of ones that stand out

Anything approaching on the Tampa Bay side, west coast of Florida
I think their weather team is 1st class

South Florida has several
Steve Weagle the lead meteorologist lives in my neighborhood and I bump into him down at the local coffee shop, total beach comber/outdoor sports, understands the locals here
No spooky language or overhyping the storm. I trust the local meteorologist above anyone else.

-Also, you can catch these local TV networks on Youtube these days and they typically air weather reports when the Tropics are active.

Doesn't TWC just regurgitate what the NHC puts out? Or do they have their own in house team?

Officially they stick with the nhc but they have actual meteorologists who are pretty good like Rick Knabb (former nhc director).

Both my kids were evacuated from the Barry remnant flooding around Hunt. Many many people have lost their lives. 50 may be low. It is just now coming out just how many small girls lost their lives. We are lucky to still have our family as at least two if not more were wiped out.

if you have not seen the videos of the TX hill country flooding OMG................Imagine the snow in the Rockies melting instantaneously and then flowing down stream.

52 dead. Barry will be the first retired name of the season, officially.

I have never been this close to one of these. My youngest kid is shaken a lot. Cutting a trip early to be with her. The stories the kids have that are still coming out are haunting.

There hasn't been a B retired in 40 years or an A in 20. There are just a handful of retired TS and this is surely the most deadly but can't confirm that at the moment.

Saw some pictures of the camp, pretty horrifying. I haven't found an exact picture, but is it right above a dam too?

I mean everything on that river is above a dam. This is somewhat controversial.

Sorry man

FTR: These Texas floods which were not a typical Hurricane/TS etc...the loss of life is staggering and without even checking the major hurricanes that came across Florida, Texas and thru the Carolinas causing immense damage last year and yet I do not recall the loss of life anywhere on the scale of what we've seen unfold in Texas

We get very amped up over Cat 3-4-5 storms out over open waters and I understand they eventually mostly make land fall but maybe we need to take a step back on Hurricane hype
I've lived in Florida most of my life outside of a great stint in SoCal and I have never been fearful except when Hurricane Andrew came barreling across in 1992 and leveled Homestead, FL
There is still a tree down there with a 2x4 in it that was launched by Andrew.

I'm not trying to be the voice here but my heart just bleeds for the people suffering right now and the families of all the people that lost their lives including many children
People get a lot of advanced notice these days on Hurricanes, plenty of time to flee or batten down the hatches
I saw a time lapse 20-30 minute video of the water rising there in Texas, mind boggling how fast that river took out roads and trapped people

Thought and prayers for all the victims and families suffering right now and for many weeks/months/years to come in Texas
You can rebuild a house, you can buy a new car, you can replace material items for the most part but you cannot replace a human soul
I have tears in my eyes just posting this, I cannot fathom the pain of these parents that lost little girls at a summer camp that's been around for almost 100 years
They have to get up every day for the rest of their lives thinking about what could have and what should have been

The system "watch" for Barry was brief. At the national level, these storms get attention as they approach and when they hit. Only if they are large do they get national attention once they move inland and rain themselves out.
I'm sure very few people were following the path/remnants of Barry once it moved inland and was downgraded. But all of that moisture does go somewhere eventually.

Honestly, I did not make the connection. I had moved on and was watching the formation of Chantal.

Past 80. At the rate they are still finding people and the number of missing 100 is not out of the question

108 died in NC from Helene, and some are still missing. This Texas event reminds me of Helene's remnants coming through last year. There were tropical storm warnings given for the state (NC), but forecasters did not know the system would stall over Western NC, and the system caused a worse case scenerio causing massive flooding, landslides/mudslides, etc. A lot of people died from drowning and landslides, but there was a huge amount of fatalities from the heavy winds bringing down trees on them that had loosened from saturated roots. Some areas have reopened, but others still need a lot of help to even start to recover. The mountain folks are strong willed people, and I will never underestimate them to not bounce back. I expect the same from Texans. The blame game has started in Texas on forecasting and evacuations, but again using NC as an example, the NC mountains were given tropical storm warnings, but a "perfect storm" happened, and no expert saw that coming. The weather will continue to get more unpredictable and destructive due to climate change. Anyway, my heart goes out to all the people impacted by the Texas flooding. They need a lot of help, prayers, and good vibes sent their way.

I think it got up to 250 across the states?

I remember how little it was in Charlotte because it went further west that forecast. Sitting there seeing reports that the dam near Rutherford was about to break, which would have claimed a lot more lives down river.

Some chatter on the possibility a system could develop while crossing FL early this week. Still 20% chance, the longer it waits the less likely it becomes a thing or a threat.

Sahara sands still are really helping keep things calmed down in the Carib so far this season.

A little more chatter now. Models see a coast scraper heading towards Nola. Nothing crazy yet, but this might spin up fast.

10/30 now. GFS isn't seeing it yet.

It could be mild. And is pointing at an area with an excessive heat advisory. A strong low maybe busts that up.

Holy ****!
-I had no idea we were on TS alert here in South Florida, wicked tropic like storms have been blowing thru here today
Apparently it will move across Florida and it sure looks like it might be moving South which is unusual for Floridians.
I guess this one is forming off the Coast, I don't think it will have time to become a catastrophe but that said, these are the kinds of storms that catch people off guard and that's when accidents happen and people get hurt so nothing will surprise me.

Just noticed the same myself. Some torrential downpours in Aventura today. Hopefully the garage doesn't flood before I can get my *** out of the office....

I watched the weather report on Sunday and they said 50-60% chance of T-Storms thru like Wed, didn't think I needed to check back
Haven't seen much sun at all around here in Jupiter/Hobe Sound, heard it was even worse down in Broward and parts of Dade

The NHC is keeping the chance of strengthening further (to tropical depression) in the Gulf at 40%, though saw a comment from people in the field that there's more interaction with land than previously forecast and so the odds of strengthening are less. But because of the proximity to land and the ensuing potential impact on people they didn't reduce the odds though they should have dropped based on how this morning has gone.
