2 weeks in a row.  Man I hit the ball good today.  I had a couple bad drives but salvaged shots out of the trees. Some good wedges. Got up and down a few times and did hit a couple fat shots (my issue the last couple years) but man felt great.

My only issue today was reading greens. Man I overread breaks all day today.   Hit really good putts that just stayed outside the hole

since i pretty much don't play golf from Oct to Feb/March most years (I don't like playing in 41 degrees and rain on sloppy courses here in Oregon), every spring i have to kind of start over on the golf swing.    THis year i'm playing just fine but i noticed my distances are down with all clubs.    I wondered about that.  I'm not that old, in pretty good physical shape just spent all winter working out and skiing.   Anyhow long story short i watched a video on youtube that reminded me about wrist angles and lag, and through impact.   It also talks about the golf swing overall but the focus is on holding onto the lag as long as possible to allow that clubhead to whip through the strike zone.   This is something I used to practice with half swings, but have gotten away from.   Turns out the combination of stiff wrists and early release loses you 10% of your distance.    Such a simple thing but that's where the effortless power comes from.

Funny I go the other way sometimes, a little too much or early wrist... And I'll lose distance. Almost like a 150 yd green side bunker swing

NJ allowing 4somes again starting on Friday. Thank goodness. Driving range open again as well.

Played a twilight 18 last night which went ok all things considered. My driving is still super inconsistent due to the lack of practices and my distances are down.  Hopefully I'll be able to ramp back up once I can play a few times a week (tee times were in short supply with the limitations) and get a proper warmup.

Lol timing.... I still think it's limited times....are going to end up with 4 carts?

Yeah, I haven't seen the new executive order yet. My guess is it will still be one per cart.

I walk most of the time anyway, so I dont care either way. (although my knee is tweaked at the moment, so walking aint easy). I only ride at one public course I play (as walking would be a nightmare due to the layout) or when its CRAZY hot and I dont feel like being dead for the back 9.

yes, the guy was clear that the wrist angle is established right at the top of the downswing.   He even said to basically resist hinging your wrists as you start the swing all the way to where your hands reach the top, and only notch the wrists right at that transition to the downswing, holding that angle as long as possible just into impact where it all comes out like snapping a towel or whip

Could you post a link to the vid please?

Good news and bad news. Bad news is my ball striking has gotten so inconsistent. Good news is the fault is supposedly a “good player” one. Trying to get to my left slide has caused me to slide and so I can’t rotate enough. Saw some drills that should help.  At least I have hope

Playing back to precovid form! Well minus chipping but the rest is right where it was before with fairways, good iron play and no 3 putts. Weird moment today on a short par 4, had to fly a pond but only from about 65 yards so came in low due to the wind and it looked like the ball was heading in. I couldn’t tell if it went in or not as it could have went over the noodle and slid past or it could have lipped past. My buddy said he thought it went over and I should take the eagle but I tapped in for birdie. 1st world problems.

Got my 2nd post-COVID round in.

Was crushing drives. Felt smooth, great tempo, shoulder turn, everything was great. Haven’t hit the ball that well over a whole round ever.

Chipping which I have always been good at even when I sucked was awful so not sure what was up there. Putting also was not good.

My state had only been allowing twosomes. They just ended this and are allowing groups of 4 now but this round was booked before they made the switch.

As much as I enjoy hanging with people I like the twosome better. Less waiting at tee box, faster round, just better for playing.

First member-member this weekend. ####### love this feeling. Three days of competitive golf ahead. Going to clean the clubs, power the speaker, and fill the flask tonight...

Hmmm. A couple range days and then shot 38-38 - 76 today from the blues. That’s with 2 balls in the water. Forced myself to stay in the moment and not steer it home and protect a score. Birdied 18 to finish in style. Only had one block miss to the right so did a better job rotating

Made my first eagle today. Holed out a 7 iron from about 155ish.

The rest of the round was a hilarious disaster (just couldn't hit a decent drive, chipped and putted like crap, ended up in terrible lies any time I actually hit a PLAYABLE drive.  Multiple approach shots coming up 1 yard short or flying like 1 yard long and rolling through.  Just exceptionally bad. The problem is our back 9 is too long for me hit 3 wood off the tee even when I'm struggling) but at least I can check that one off the list.

Got another round in. Another decent day for me:

Has anyone ever pulled a muscle in their forearm playing?

If you are holding your arm out so you are looking at your palm it’s the inside of the forearm closet to the elbow but running down the about halfway my arm.

Yes, did that on a “dude’s trip” to Biloxi back in 2008.  Took a big swing in a garbage lie and felt it immediately in my RH forearm as you described. That was on #1 and by #16 it was bruise purple in about a 3” oval. I could barely swing on the back 9, but a boatload of vodka helped me finish the round and win 2 skins. Took about a month to get back to normal (but I’m old).

I recommend ice and Advil for the near term. Whiskey+beer if you’re feeling spicy.

Don’t think I messed it up that bad. Was on a normal swing when I noticed it. Really weird. On one of my best shots of the day so I was ignoring it until the next tee box.

Icing it up for sure as soon as I get home.

Where on your forearm?  Cause if it's tennis elbow it's going to suck

This is definitely a muscle thing. Dealt with that tennis elbow thing last year and you are right that did suck.

Iced and acetaminophen and it’s already feeling much better. Got lucky!

Its pretty awesome how stupid some people are.

Our 8th hole has a shallow marshy area/creek that is like 200 yards from the tees I play. Its a pretty intimating shot for normal golfers and there really isn't a good bailout. So plenty of people barely clear it but end up to the right, which slopes towards the woods. I'd say MAYBE 20% of balls hit down there stay in play.  And the bridge to cross the creek is like 50 yards to the left, so its a long drive to go look for your ball if you hit it in no mans land. (and the woods are before the carts-allowed area starts, so you're really supposed to walk there)

On sunday, some ####### just drove right across the creek, right between 2 fairly prominent "no carts" signs. Left massive tire tracks. The course posted pics on twitter to reinforce that this is not allowed.

So what happens today......some ######## does the same thing 20 yards further right.....and gets the cart stuck....and abandons it.   No idea whether the guy told the staff or anything.  I presume he didn't and just walked the rest of the round (hoping nobody outside his group noticed) but who the hell knows.

We're living in a society people!!!

Well took my lesson.  Turns out what I thought was a strong left hand grip was weak, my right hand was too under causing face to stay open. Big thing was I was starting my hands down and lower body turn at the same time. Getting stuck. Have to plant, post/straighten left leg and rotate but don’t “go” before arms are parallel to ground. More lag. Sure hit some great shots in the lesson. We’ll see

My chipping game is all bump-and-run. I am seemingly incapable of hitting a high chip with backspin from short distances. Any tips/video suggestions?

A normal bump and run, the ball is usually back in the stance, all the weight on your front foot and you're keeping your hand ahead of the ball while striking it.  Also, most commonly you're keeping your wrists and elbows from moving much.

To generate a higher chip with more spin....  Move the ball to the middle of your stance.  Keep your weight a little forward, but much closer to balanced on both feet.  Your hands should be about even with the ball when striking it(maybe slightly ahead) and you should have a little bit of wrist hinge in your takeaway.  Not a lot, mind you, but just a bit.  One thing to remember is you still need to be hitting down on the ball.  I see many people try to "lift" this shot rather than strike it and that's what leads to blades that shoot over the green.

As with pretty much any golf shot, you'll need to practice it a ton before you really get comfortable with it.

Now if you really want to hit it high with spin, we'd be talking about a flop shot and that's a completely different animal.

Practice.

My chipping improve just by practicing chips with air swings in the living room. Middle of stance, strong back leg (for me I get in trouble when my back leg dips a bit), slight open face, and practice sweeping through firmly with the bounce of the club just brushing the carpet.

I guess I'm going to bite the bullet and get a lesson to cure the pull-hooks.  Thought I had it figured out after watching my swing on video.  Went out Sunday and put 18 tee balls in play, and shot 80 with no birdies, no doubles.  Played 9 on Tuesday and pull-hooked 7 of 9 tee shots, somehow salvaged a 45.  Most frustrated I've ever been on the course.

Too much arms not enough turn

You're welcome

Played 9 in some crazy wind today and managed to one putt 6 of the 9. 2 of my 2 putt holes were inches from going in and I had no 3 putts. That said I only brought my driver and putter to the course and still scrambled to bogey every hole. I usually hit a low flight ball and today I launch into the wind and get pushed all over, f this game.

Hit maybe 2 really solid irons all day yesterday. Sucked. Back at it tomorrow

So my handicap has gone up about a shot but I knew that would happen because I had one really good score drop off

However for the most part my game/swing has come back. Way more consistent. My last 5 rounds have all been within a shot or two.

Hopefully I can continue

got out last week for Round 2 of 2020.

hit every miss possible (besides whiff) on the first five holes: hook, pull hook, low-screaming draw, block, fade, push fade, worm-burner, dead-top, and my favorite, the 40 yard pop fly to right field (ball teed up too high and the scuff mark on the top Driver to prove it). feeling pretty down.

then, on #6, i decided to watch the clubface hit the back of the ball. freaking miracle. parred three in a row (with GIR), and then three more pars over the next six holes. left every putt 2' short all day. small victories and some things to work on for next week.

Where did you play? Recently played valley of the moon and liked being forced to take some off to stay straight and not chance hitting a house. Pace of play was pretty solid there as well, just a bit of a drive is the only downside.

LOL

it WAS Valley of the Moon last Wednesday. hottest day of the week and had the place to myself after 2:00pm.

Was playing so great today. Par'd the first 4 holes(unheard of for me. I'm a 15 index)  and my short game was just on fire.

The 5th hole is a downhill par 4 that I've been hitting 3 wood on lately.  Unless I smoke it, it leaves me a really hard 2nd shot (because the green runs HARD front to back and is incredibly hard to hold if you're hitting a longer club) But I'm trying a new "damage control" approach lately.

There's a couple of houses very close to the tee and just as I'm starting my downswing, I hear THIS VERY loudly coming from the back porch.

I proceed to top my drive to about the ladies tees, leaving myself way too long, have to advance it forward. My 3rd barely rolls off the back and then I miss a chip for par by like a foot, breaking a streak. I ended up doubling 9 (due to a bad chip) but still shot a 39 on the front, which is pretty great for me. Struggled a little on the back, but still shot a really good number.

I'm really happy with my game right now. I've been between 87 and 91 my last 6 rounds, even with a blow up hole pretty much every time (today it was 10, which is the hardest hole on the course).

My goal for the year was to get down to a 12. I feel like I'm SO close.

My last seven scores are: 83, 81, 81, 80, 82, 81, 81.
I’m at 77 79 78 79 75 77

Its weird. I can’t hit a fairway (<30%) but my irons are phenomenal. About 65% GIR. Chipping is great. Can’t make a put beyond 4ft.

-2 through 4 yesterday. Then went bogey-bogey-double bogey bogey par.

I swear if I could hit the fairway on most drives I’d play to scratch.

Low iron off the tee?

Low iron off the tee?
I’m stubborn and I’m working on it. I carry a 3 wood and a 4 iron. Can’t hit my hybrid worth a #### and I’m gonna buy a three iron utility driving iron soon.

When I played high school golf I hit a 3 iron off the tee a lot more than most people and usually scored better. But it’s hard leaving 40 yards off the tee.

I can use this strategy if I’m playing at like 6300 yards. But if I’m paying back at 6800-7000 yards it’s not really reasonable.

Honestly I’m fine missing the fairway as long as I’m not behind a tree or in the water hazard.

Let’s combine forces. I’m hitting around 60%. Hitting less than half the greens though and am over 30 putts each round (which is more a result of proximity to the hole than bad putting).

You’re in AZ right?  You ever get back up to MSP?  Seriously let me know if/when you are in town.
