***Official 2025 Golf Thread,, belljr quits Again!?!*** (3 Viewers)

Started and ended at a 6.5, with a few ups and downs...but my putting is drastically improved heading into next year, so for the first time in years I feel like I can actually start scoring better.
Must be that awesome scotty , I left some of my putting juju in it ;)
I love it, man. Actually tweaked my stance to fit the putter...which is the opposite of what I've done for the last 20 years. Thanks again!! Hope your new one works out.
took me a bit. Was going great, then I put my old school mid size grip on it and it took me a few rounds to get that feel back on lags. Lol

2016 will be the year for golf for the Judge. Kids out, can play weekends. Joining a club in March or April after El Nino is over. Getting new fairway metals with some of my SB winnings. Only 2 clubs not fitted in my bag and I could be getting better performance out of those (especially length). Going to work on my short game big time. Really hope to get to a 5 in a year. Never been lower than a 7. Need to get up and down a whole lot more than I am now. Excited for the challenge.

Tee Times being easy with a clean layout are the number one for me.

The rest of the stuff is secondary.

I only use Ghin because that's where my scores are posted

Playing in a prestigious country club tournament this week. My handicap is gloriously high and my game has been better. Going to be all mental. :scared:

looking to plan a golf trip to Kiawah at the end of April. Definitely playing the Ocean Course. Any thoughts on the other courses that are part of their package? Turtle Point, Osprey Point, Cougar Point, Oak Point.

Anyone played there?

Totally forgot to update this.

In short, I had a blast. Three days of golf and the presentation by the club was spectacular. 54 teams I think (I had like the second or third highest handicap of the 108 players -- there were some great golfers there). Combatted the mental demons with copious amounts of alcohol. Frankly, I wish I had started sooner each day because the starts to my rounds were always a little sluggish then once I'd relax and have fun I'd crush my number. First day I started triple, double, triple, par, eagle (which was a net double eagle), par, triple. But, I was super happy to hold my own and for the three rounds total I shot my number overall and my contributed 9 holes was a -1.

Partner and I finished T6 overall and won the sister-sister portion. Would have come in second but for one hole where my brother in law, who is a 5 handicap, shot an 8 on a hole in the final day on the nine where we needed his score. Cost us about $1200. But all in all it was a blast and we figure after accounting for buy-ins and cash tips we each made about ten bucks.

ghin app...

tried golfnow but never has a course i want to play...

Anyone tried out the M1 v M2?

I'll hit both on a machine to measure spin, speed, etc...but I've never been one to utilize all the adjustments on my TM clubs, so wondering if the M2 and saving $100 may be a smarter way to go.

I've been hitting an R11 for about 4 years, and it's the best and most consistent club in my bag.

Ready to pull the trigger and buy new irons. Spent today hitting several and walked away feeling best about the new Ping G series. Been playing for five years. Still working the first clubs I bought used five years ago (Ping Zing 2).

I'm currently an 11.3 handicap and think I'll be single digits by the end of the year. Have broken 80 a handful of times, but feel I've made strides during the winter months. One of the nice things about living in the northwest is we can golf 12 months out of the year. It can be awfully wet sometimes, but at least we can play. Frustrating hitting a drive with 250 yards of carry that ends up going 251 yards if you're lucky enough to have it bounce forward out of the mud crater. Such is golf life here.

Also liked the TaylorMade RSi 1's, but learning toward the Ping G's. Super shocked to see how far the ball traveled (virtually in a screen) and dead straight. I got to hit my old clubs for comparison too. So I know it wasn't just the computer jacking up the numbers. My old 7 iron went about 160. Newer ones easily flew 180 with a nice high draw. Yes, I know they drop the lofts on new clubs to give the illusion of distance, but holy hell they hit the ball well. Mi####s even flew nicely.

Haven't purchased yet, but planning on ordering a set soon. Will have to custom order due to my height and hand size. Was surprised to see just how badly I've had to adjust for clubs that weren't fit for me. When I hit my old clubs onto the plastic with tape on the bottom of the club I was constantly digging the toe in first. I'm just too tall for my old clubs and really struggled to hit the ball cleanly sometimes.

Will update as I move forward. Would love to hear some stories/advice others have about buying new clubs.

EDIT: Should have mentioned that my Ping Zing 2's were built in 1992. They're antiques compared to the newer modern clubs.

Found out this morning that I can get the TaylorMade RSi 1's for $200 less than the Ping G's.

You know you have a serious golf problem when deciding over which irons to buy is causing me to not sleep.

Found out that the TaylorMade RSi 1's are on sale because they're discontinuing the model. Can't custom order anything. ####.

Back on the Ping G series now, but wondering if it's worth it to spend so much on irons that I don't use near as much as I do wedges. I hit the ball plenty far. I've got warning track power. Just short of 300 yards is generally my best distance with the driver.  This puts in me in situations where I'm hitting 125 to 100 into greens a lot. Would it make more sense to invest the money in the best wedge set I can buy?

Maybe it's time to start a 2016 golf thread?  I'm usually averse to starting new threads when one of the existing ones will work fine.

When you think about how much you spend on greens fees, cart fees, and golf balls, the cost of clubs is relatively cheap, especially if your current set is 20 years old. I'd spend the money on the irons and the wedges. With your distance, you likely don't need a 3 and maybe even a 4 (depending on if you use hybrids), so you ought to be able to add wedges without adding to the standard cost of a set.

I don't think the price or quality of the wedges is going to make anywhere near the difference as the practice with the wedges. You can buy a driver game and maybe an iron game but I don't think you can buy a wedge game.

My advice on new irons: don't but during the peak of your game. I thought I was getting really good and hit the tour preferred muscle backs really well. Found them for a good price too.

well, my game fell back to earth and I've resorted to playing my buddy's old school call away cavity backs. :bag:

Sounds to me you need to play some different courses or change the tees you play :)

But in all seriousness.  I hit my 5 iron maybe once a round compared to other clubs, it's just the nature of the game.  I would invest more money in my irons than woods.   Wedges you can get 3 great wedges for 3-400 at full retail all teh time

In a couple weeks I'll be playing a course where they have caddies only.  Around how much I supposed to tip him at the end of the round?

What course?

What is the caddie fee?

Fore caddy or full?

Depending on these answers $50

Ask the course or the member who is bringing you. Like belljr said, it depends. I've played 3 very memorable places with caddies - Pinehurst, Pine Valley, and Royal County Down. At each of those places, we paid about $100. If it's a lesser place, pay less.

Anybody ever play mesquite Nevada courses? If so suggestions? Doing a guys golf weekend and comboing Vegas and mesquite.

Buy the Ping's if you hit them the best.  You'll  never forgive yourself for saving that $200 every time you hit a poor shot with the RSi 1's.

Old Memorial in Tampa.

No clue about the caddy fee.  Will definitely check with my buddy who's father is the member.  Based on Hoosier's comment above, I assume $100 is probably standard?

Going to go hit them both a few more times at a minimum. Finding the RSi1's on ebay brand new with the exact specs and club selection that I want, so they're still a possibility.

Planning on buying 5-PW, AW, and SW from the same set. +1" in length and 2 or 3 degrees up on the lie **. Contemplated buying separate wedges as a set, but thinking I would prefer to have the same shafts throughout.

** Note about lie angle. I've struggled with pushing shots right from the start. Not big fades or slices, just a bit to the right. Makes complete sense now that I've learned how much my lie angle was off from optimal. Being too tall for my clubs has been causing me to have impact occur with the toe down too often. When I got to see the marks on the bottom of the club when hitting the strike panel it was fairly eye opening. I had no idea how steep my attack angle was. It's making a solid case for getting fit to your clubs as best as you can in my opinion. Hoping it will translate to a long term difference in scores.

Another thought... I get the feeling that by purchasing new clubs I'm trying to buy lower scores. Feels sort of like cheating. Maybe just trying to level the playing field makes it sound better?

Went with the M2 after hitting both TMs, the Callaway X, the Titleist, and a Ping (just for the heck of it).

The M2 got me another 8 yards on average from all others, with no loss of accuracy.  Right at a 14 degree launch.  Can't wait to get it out this weekend.

Empty nester and now time to play more golf. Joined a club - very good, challenging course.  Lessons (2015 LPGA instructor of the year) and club fitting booked.  Excited to take my game to the next level.  Only clubs not fitted are 3 and 5 wood. Need more length out of my 3 wood and to decide between a 5 wood, hybrid or 3 iron. Also need to look at a putter. Haven't switched from Odyssey 2 ball yet.

Congrats!  How are the practice facilities?  You close enough to spend lots of time on 100 yds and in?

which club?

I played Saturday, but it was really poor.

I did did get the driver going on the back 9, but the grass is barren and the ground is hard, my irons were just terrible.  I try not to take too much away because on the 3s where I was teed up, my irons were ok, so I think it's just the club head bouncing off the ground for the others.

On on the flip side, I practiced bump and run with a 7i and really did that pretty effectively. Knocked it within 5ft a few times. Also my putting was the best it's been in a couple of years. I one putted 7 times and 5 of those were outside of 15ft. The greens were saturated so no real fear of going by too far so I could be aggressive, but it was nice that they were dropping.

Went out Saturday and came home with a 47/47. You know how to screw up getting on the green in 2 on a par-5? Five putt from 45 feet.  :bag:

On the positive side of things:

- I didn't lose a ball. That happens infrequently enough that I celebrate every time.

- I might have figured out my driver. I've had mostly a fade/slice for the past year but then the last couple of times I've experimented with standing a little farther away, forcing me to bend over a bit more. The last two weekends I've eliminated my slice (so far) but picked up a tendency to pull the ball left. Starting on #15 on Saturday, I decided to swing a little less hard. Right down the middle. Same thing on #18 with a little draw - and I never draw the ball. Too bad I ran out of holes and then it rained Sunday so I couldn't get out again.

Finally got fitted for a driver at Golf Galaxy.  Fitting was $40, but they will refund it if you buy a driver.  I'm not a tech guy and don't want to make things too mechanical, but I was impressed with the process.  Got rid of my Titleist bias pretty quickly when I saw the numbers and wound up with a new Ping G Series.  M2 went a little bit further but I had a tendency to close the club face, resulting the occasional pull/hook - I also hated the two tone look on the top.  Can't wait to take it outside!

I love watching Fowler's swing and footwork (which GC just slo mo'd)...which drove me to the most impactful swing tweak I've ever experienced, which was keeping my left heel on the ground.  Tried it two Springs ago now and my consistency and ball striking has never been better, especially thru low-play winter.

By this do you mean at the top of the backswing or near impact?

Got hammered Sunday and played Mesa country club post-member member tourney. 6800 yards and tough pin locations. Amazing weather though and after starting double, triple, I play the next twenty five holes at 9 over. Best I've played in two years.

The game is fun again!

Top of the backswing. Forces me to focus on my turn to get to where I need to be at the top (and helps my tempo), and I have a better feel and am more consistent with my weight shift...and just feel the rotation all the way thru.

Over the last 2 yrs got all new irons, fitted, and switched wedges (Taylor made to Volkeys). Then I bought a ping G30 driver, Taylor made 3W, and call away hybrids. Finished off with Scotty putter. Game is best ever, don't practice much, play 20-25 times yr and avg 76-77.

A lot of it is the clubs. If I just don't overswing the driver and woods, they go straight. If I just make a rotary turn with the irons, they go straight.  That leaves the wedges and putting as the only thing I need to practice. Game is a lot simpler now. Get fitted

Agree.  I've been fitted on irons, wedges (volkeys as well) and Driver.  Just need to figure out 2 clubs in the 200-230 range and which putter.
