Was that calamity of errors in the 5th inning worse than the Buckner play? I'd say yes
No.

Buckner makes that play the Red Sox win the World Series.

Instead it goes to game 7 and they lose.

The Yankees don’t implode, the only thing they knew is they had a chance to get on a plane to LA down 3-2

Hell freaking no. Buckners error was devastating.

Disagree.

Buckner's error was one play.

The Yankees last night had several chances to right the ship and failed every time.

One play that literally cost them

THE WORLD SERIES.

No comparison bud.

Agree to disagree.

Let’s frame this a different way.

The implosion was epic. One, if not the biggest defensive meltdowns we have seen in a World Series game.

However the consequences of that don’t compare to the consequence of Buckers ill fated “routine ground ball under his glove” to actually win the World Series.

The consequences simply don’t compare to me.

Yeah I don’t agree. He made a terrible read and a mental mistake.

I truly believe he thought Rizzo had that play.

Cole is a hard core competitor. These hot takes are ridiculous. That guy is a crazy great pitcher and fierce competitor and he made a huge mental error.

He ain’t lazy. That’s ****ing ridiculous.

He blew it….no debate in that. But lazy? GTFOH.

Cole is a hard core competitor
Why didn't he cover first, then? You can tell the 1B was bewildered. Cole just sat on his ego and cost the Yankees the WS.
No one can answer with certainty….but I have played, coached and been around baseball my entire life…..every pitcher is taught if a ball is hit to the first base side you are hauling *** to cover.

He blew it…..and looking at the play over and over he got a bad read thinking Rizzo had it on his own. He made a huge mistake and there is no excuse for it.

But lazy? Ego? All that is hot take *********.

His body of work as Pro speaks for itself.

It happens.

Buckner still has another game to play.....
Sorry…..they win it all if he fields a routine ground ball.

We can go back and forth all day…..Buckners error will live in infamy while this won’t even be talked about 5 years from now.

As a long time ATL fan, it's very gut wrenching to see Freeman win the MVP. Great player and person. Dude is a baller. Hurts to see him on the wrong team. Happy for him though.

Yeah I will always scratch my head at that move. I always thought he would be a lifer in Atlanta.

It was a botched contract negotiation. Freddie fired his agents afterward, and he's not the type to do that. He wanted to stay in ATL and ATL wanted him to stay. And they would have paid him just as much as LA. But Freddie's agent apparently botched the whole thing and told ATL that LA was a done deal, so they signed another player. My understanding is the agent also got compensated more since he switched teams.

My god…….that’s criminal.

Why didn't he cover first, then? You can tell the 1B was bewildered. Cole just sat on his ego and cost the Yankees the WS.
And he blamed Rizzo. It's what he does.
Did he? I went to bed the moment Verdugo ended the game.

Was he quoted as saying that?
Wasn't anything he said, it was his reaction after the play. Pointing at Rizzo/first, showing "disgust" for Rizzo not making the play. Then after the fact claiming he "took a bad angle" on the ball. His "angle" was walking to the dugout instead of covering the base.

You are making so many assumptions.

I will agree to disagree. It was a terrible mental error......had nothing to do with "ego" or "laziness".......way way over reactions which is typical these days.

They lost.....it's over. Next year is a new season. Cole is a top guy and there is a reason for that.

I am a die hard Yankees fan.....and we were not beating the Dodgers 4 straight. It would have been nice to go back to LA and make it interesting......but the better team won.

I honestly still dont believe what I saw last night. The Judge play was something I was able to catch when I was 9. Cole not covering was insane. The Volpe play was at least somewhat challenging (given the the angle and the speed of the runner). To have that all happen in one inning was beyond imagination.

Just absolute craziness. An absolute comedy of errors in the field all series long. Obviously they very much deserved to lose.

I watched Jeter stone cold drop a routine infield pop up....a play he has made 10K times in his life easily. All it takes is a .5 second of taking your eye off the ball.....that's what Judge did. He was looking at the runners as he fielded that fly ball. I have seen Major leaguers drops those....plenty of times. But this is the biggest stage and the eyes on it are insane of course.

Volpe's throw was not routine....but he has made that play plenty in his career......it's a throw he has to make in that moment.

Cole.....that was an unbelievable mental error....because you are taught to move to first the moment you see a ground ball hit to the first base side......he simply got a bad read and assumed Rizzo had it.....bad assumption. You don't assume. And he knows this. And he knows that was on him. Rizzo's assumption was the correct one....where is my pitcher for the toss. He fully expected him to be running to the bag.

**** happens. That's baseball. It's nothing new to me. It just sucks it all happened with 2 outs, with a 5-0 lead in a big game.

It's bad not to cover, but I'm not sure Cole beats Betts to the bag anyway Betts is flying. Cole isn't being lazy, he just makes a bad assumption that the 1B will make the play since the ball was hit hard. I'm not really sure why the 1B is paying so far off 1B in that situation anyway. He is almost playing 2B when the ball is hit.

As i was watching that inning unfold I couldn't help but think back to the Jays/Rangers 2015 ALDS game 5 - the infamous Bautista bat flip. Prior to that the Rangers made a number of errors. I expected Freddie to park one when he came up. All he got was. a measley 2 run single. I don't like either of these teams but very happy for Kiermaier and Teoscar. 💍

Yeah it was one of those grounders that went into a "no man's land" place based on Rizzo's positioning. And you are right...Betts was flying and it was going to be a very close play....it would have had to been a perfect feed and tap of the foot by cole on the bag.....not routine by any means.

We call that drill the "Chaos" drill. We always worked on Chaos at every practice. It's simply not routine......but the routine part is COoe running to cover which he failed to do because he assumed....."Lazy hot takes" are ridiculous. Cole is a profresional. But for some reason people make things ersonel about players and think he is a doosh or lazy or selfish.

That's all malarkey.

When you have watched a ton of baseball....an inning like that is not shocking. I hasve seen innings like that 100;s of times in my life watching baseball. The stage though is what amplifies the shock and awe of it.

Oh well.....as the great John Sterling used to say......that's baseball Susan.

Oh for sure.....anyone can drop a ball. As a former centerfielder, I know that the ball hit directly at you like that is often the hardest play. But this wasn't a "hard play".....he peaked....and for absolutely no reason. There was just a runner on first? Where was he going? Just catch it.

Just an insane 1 in 10,000 miscue.

And yeah, Cole wasn't being lazy. He just made a bad assumption at the worst possible time.

Dodgers get Shohei pitching next season.
And May. And Gonsolin. And Glasnow. And Kershaw?
I don't think May will be back. Maybe River Ryan, though
Kershaw is probably a no. Hopefully they can keep Walker and Treinen. Not sure if Flaherty will be back. But the starting rotation could be: Shohei, Yamamoto, Glasnow, then throw in Gonsolin, Stone, Sheehan, Walker if they can resign him, possibly River. If they can stay healthy the starting rotation will be strong. And there's still Bobby Miller if he can get back on track. Gotta think Snack Knack won't see much time unless things get bad again.
Knew it was coming but it's official. Not a starter but Daniel Hudson is calling it a career.

more baseball is better if you are ok with an imbalanced system where three of the four final teams had the highest payrolls last night was the only time i watched and that was only because i honestly want a curse on the yankees for the two meatheads who interfered and it made me happy to see those guys in particular take it in the shorts otherwise who cares its the best teams money can buy playing for a win and that doesnt interest me at all get nfl salary caps and until then i just dont acknowlege that any mlb title by a high payroll teams has any significance take that to the payroll bank bromigos

i love how he points at the bag like if i wasnt such a lazy laroosh that is where i should be take that to the base brohan
In fairness, it does look like he was running at the beginning of the clip. He just seemed to be running laterally towards the dugout instead of toward first base.
He clearly thought Rizzo had it...bad read...bad assumption...and in fairness Rizzo also could have had some more urgency.....it was a crappy play all the way around.

SWC....damn man....LOL.

Yeah they both kinda half assed it thinking the other was going to make the play. Game midseason…..,who cares. Game 5 with your back against the wall, damn you have to hustle every play. That whole inning was just a bad team look.

yeah, i'm gonna probably try to hit one of those games but probably not the opener because the 'ol chiefer can't afford scalper prices even in wisconsin unless i can pay in beer and cheese so i'm hoping i can get a seat or two to game 2 or 3 for me and my boy and i might need to raid his bank brochacho......

Watching it again, WTF was Rizzo doing? He fielded it off to the side and he went lateral to field it instead of charging the ball which would have taken him towards the bag. If he plays it right he could have taken it himself as well. Both guys just expected the other guy to take care of it and neither did. Really bad all the way around.

Having dominant teams is only bad when you're not a fan of one of those teams. Works in the NCAA too. It's better than the watered down every team is around .500 like the NFL. As someone said, every MLB owner is a billionaire and they all can afford to spend more to get players, some just choose not to since their prerogative is to make as much money off the team as possible, like the Pirates. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GSnfdD4WQAArKGE?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

Also, take a look at attendance figures for these teams. "Small market" teams often don't get fan support. Playing in front of half empty (or worse) stadiums. Maybe the locals should support their teams more. More support=more money to spend, which the owners will probably pocket anyway.

also the cheaterstros titles dont count either cheaters take that to the bank brohans
Yeah, I count both 2017 and 2018 as Dodgers championships since the cheating Astros and Red Sox should have been stripped of their titles. Thanks for your support bromigo!
