Verlander's record & ERA at CY is impressive. The Os have been bad for many of those starts, but they've also had some pop for some of them.

Verlander with 27 pitches through 2. Believe it or not, that's a pretty high number of opposing pitches for the Orioles to have drawn, especially considering they've been 6 up and 6 down.

Still, he'll easily get into the 8th at this rate. Flaherty worked a walk in a very nice at-bat last night, maybe he can see some pitches leading off the third. It's obvious Baltimore needs to get into Detroit's pen, the way Verlander is dealing.

After last night, I think Ausmus would let him throw until he hits 125 pitches or his arm falls off, which ever comes first.

Better than you could have asked of Chen through 3, but he fares increasingly worse with every subsequent trip through the line-up. And then he usually runs out of gas in a huge hurry on his third pass.

If the O's could get 6 IP with 2 runs out of him, I think they would take that in a heartbeat.

####### DirecTV went into reset mode and is taking a year to reboot. Serves me right. I'll blame it on the cat.

So happy to see Nick the Greek finally play in the postseason.

Not so happy he and Hardy are driving up their prices in free agency! But I'll live with it.

Verlander let Shoop get away and it cost him. 2 strikes on a free swinger and I thought for sure a fastball up around his eyes was coming.

Whoo-hoo! Almost as good as the 2-run HR is that Verlander threw 27 pitches that inning - now at 54 for the game.

C'mon Chen. Get through the heart of the order one more time.

Camdens a Band Box....I love it. Every ball hit in the air seems to have a chance to get out.

I thought Jones gave up a bit on Miggys hit. Turned his back and waited and the ball hit the lower half of the fence.

Can't comment since I'm at work and didn't see it, but Jones is terrible at going back on balls. He is good at coming in on balls and has a good arm for a CF but his two Gold Gloves are a complete mystery to me and seem based on the 2 times a year he makes a showy leaping catch to steal a HR.

I may get lambasted by fellow Orioles fans, but here goes:

I always thought Jones was a good-to-pretty good fielder. He's a great leader and a great hitter, but day-to-day, I was never overly impressed with his play in the field.

I just replayed it. Jones had a good jump on the ball but around 15-20 feet from the fence he just turned his back and stopped. The ball hit lower on the fence than I am sure he thought it would. Had he just kept his line I think it was catchable. It would have been a good catch. Hunter was stopped between first and second because he was not sure if Jones was going to catch it.

22 more pitches in the 4th - now at 76 for the game.

How many pitches do you think it will take to get Verlander pulled? If he throws 15 in each of the next 2 innings, he'd be at 106 through 6 - have to believe Ausmus would send him out to start the 7th and see how far he could get.

That Cabrera ball was a missile, Willie Mays with a midget on his shoulders wouldn't have had that
I disagree..Mays would have been running full out with his back to the plate The midget would have been facing the plate and tracking the ball and made the catch. Now the question is would the midget have hung on when his face gets crushed into the top of the wall?

It was a missile but Jones was playing deep and stopped way too early. Great DP by the Birds.

What's Cabrera's deal so far this series? Weird staredown of De Aza when he tried to bunt his way on last night, pointing at the crowd after scoring today, and strolling down to first on that double play. Just seems a little strange all the way around.

That pitch count became worrisome quite quickly. I'm hoping JV can get through 6 or, ideally, 7. What does all this mean for the O's pen? Lots of pitches yesterday, and now an early start to the pen today. If Baltimore loses this, they'll be 1-1 with heavy bullpen use ...that swings a bit of an edge to Detroit, I believe. Lot to still play out today, though ...

Depends on how far Gausman takes them. He's their #5 starter (though maybe #2 in terms of stuff) and has only thrown 18 pitches. If he keeps getting outs, he can easily take them into and maybe through the 7th.

Can't believe JV walked Schoop. He only had 13 walks all season. Verlander's not dominating - this game is right there for the O's to take if they can just keep it close and get into the Tigers bullpen.

Except for a handful of games JV has not been dominating for 2 years.

Verlander is at 94 so unless he gets a 10 pitch or less inning it looks like one more and that will be it. Who are they going to go to? AA..Sanchez, maybe Hardy? Soria has to still be shell shocked from last night.

You serious Clark?

95 pitches through 5 for Verlander. Seems like 115 is about his ceiling. I wonder if he would start the 7th if he's at 110 or so.

I hardly ever see the guy play. Am I overreacting, or is this just par for the course?
He's always like that as far as joking around. As far as the dp, he could barely walk or bend over a month ago. He's hurt.

Gausman, wow. Fanned Martinez on a 98 mph pitch, got the ground out on a 99 mph pitch, and then the spit-change to end the inning.

Tigers are weak defensively. Carrera was still gun shy from that ball he butchered a couple of weeks ago. First time I have seen Ausmus take the ball from the big 3 without talking.

I like the move. But it is highly unusual relative to the way he has given all three of them the opportunity to work out of jams.

Is he setting up for a Kirk Gibson-type moment?

Oh, I hope someone in the booth brings that up to Eckersley.

But it's a good move ..JV wasn't really sharp today, and why not use Anibal? Now the question is how long he sticks with Sanchez. After yesterday's bullpen fiasco, it makes sense to let him finish this out, if he can. But that puts more pressure on Porcello to pitch well in game 4.

eta: But they could use Lobstein, too, for long relief. Carry on, Sanchez!

Top of the 8th getting interesting ....

Hell of an effort by Gausman, just ran out of gas. These Tigers are lethal the second time through.

Gunning down Cabrera kept the O's in the game, at least for now.

I'm fine with Brach and then Ubaldo if necessary - might as well keep the good relievers fresh for the trip to Detroit. This series is feeling like a war that's going down to the late innings every game.

VMart!!!!!!!!
But why try to score Miggy there????????????????????????? Stupid
Because the playoffs are a microcosm of the regular season?

We been getting guys thrown out left and right all year.

Jason Beck@beckjason
Cabrera wasn't far behind Torii Hunter heading into 3B. Not sure if there was confusion on wave or just overaggressive call by Dave Clark.
I know.....They did it with Prince in the playoffs last year. And V-Mart during the season this year. I am pretty sure the TIgers lead the league in running into outs.

Well Brookens should have never sent him. Need a new 3B coach.
