***OFFICIAL*** Boardwalk Empire thread (2 Viewers)

I just caught up through the end. I'm not 100% satisfied, but all things considered it was a good season. Light years better then season 3. Unfortunately Killing Jimmy at the end of season 2 sent this show down a path that it just cant fully rebound from.

I think they did Harrow well. It was time for him to go.

I'm really bullish on Nucky and his new apprentice. Its likely this show only has 2-3 more seasons in it and now they have someone they can kill off and set up final retaliation for the Thompson Brothers.

It's really time for Chicago to take a leap forward next season. The guy who plays Capone is excellent and now you got Herc there to help out. You got arguably the best actor in the show set up as the #1 henchman and now Eli by his side.

I'm in for season 5.

I disagree with 2-3 seasons only. I think though that is likely as most HBO shows max out at 7 seasons, this is one of those shows that could go longer since there are so many areas that they can go in with Lansky, Luciano, Rothstein and of course Capone.

Obviously. Harrow's story was basically over, they couldn't keep going down the well of "he is reformed now and peaceful...Nucky needs help here comes Harrow" any longer. His death serves the story well as his journey could be seen as a complete one. Keeping Chalky alive for future seasons serves the story well as there is a lot of things to explore with his character IMO.

So thumbs up or down for the season? I'm about halfway through. Heard some people at work say it was really good near the end.

the last episode kept me pinned to the tv...couldnt even leave to take a leak lol

I posted this earlier, but the scene with Nucky and Eli was one of the most intense scenes I have watched. Unreal.

He absolutely was going to.

 
Great finale. A lot of intense moments...expecting someone to get shot.

Narcisse having to bow to Hoover was great. The look on Eli's face when Van Alden picks him up was great.

And the ending for Harrow was fitting.

 
If they manage to keep the whole Gretchen Mol character to a minimum and keep "the children" off screen next season they could really knock it out of the park.

I'm most nervous about next season being Michael Shannons last. I think hes a prime candidate to go.

I can see him be all Walter Whitey in the next serious drama that comes along and start being a featured actor. He brings such an intenseness to his scenes, love him.

 
Harrow dying: bad

Gillian in the clink: good

Dr. Libyan living: meh

Season overall: thumbs up (although not as high as others)

Thought season three was much better. I didn't mind Gyp as many did and at worst he's not anymore annoying then Narcisse.

The ending to season three was much more entertaining with all the big dawgs butting heads and Harrow eventually cleaning house.

Season 4 was sloppy and not that satisfying. Nearly every move Chalky made throughout the season left me scratching my head. Eli goes to Chicago? How many times are we going to do that? Not enough Capone, Rothstein or Masseria.

Only things to like in season 4 were Nucky/Eli, Harrow, and what little we got from Capone/Van Alden.

Chalky/Narcisse, the FBI, Arquette and Livingston were all misfires in their own way.

 
wow, one of the better finales I can remember.

Harrow basically sacrificed himself to make sure Tommy will have a better life and never have to worry about Gillian again...and also get some closure for his buddy Jimmy. I rewatched the final couple minutes several times, and just stared at the TV when it was over. the last few shots were just amazing.

I think Nucky definitely would have killed Eli. when Willie asks him if he would have, he says "he's your father and my brother, and I'm not the man you think I am." basically dodging the question, and saying almost the exact thing that he said to Jimmy before he shot him. there should be no question that Nucky is a full fledged gangster.

the fight scene with Eli & Knox was great too. it really felt like life or death.

Gus, after examining Richard's half face for a while, gives Richard a cordial smile with his half face. "Good morning. My name is Gustavo Fring."

Gus extends his hand for a handshake. Richard examines it for a bit, pondering this man's intentions. Deciding he's harmless, he shakes it in return. "Richard Harrow."

Gus lets go. "May I ask, Mr. Harrow...what happened to your face?"

Richard twitches a bit. "The war."

"Which one?"

"The Great War."

"Ah. I was involved in a war of sorts myself."

Richard grunts. "Is that why half your face is gone, too?"

"Yes."

"How did it happen?"

Gus's smile disappears. "A man in a wheelchair activated a bomb that was made by my meth cook."

Richard stares at Gus blankly, digesting just what the hell he just heard. After about a minute, he grunts and awkwardly walks away.

Tense episodes, made lots of sense while still being surprising.It looks the story will heavily shift to Chicago next year now that even more main characters are out there. Also, I was money on my predictions that neither Eli nor Narcisse die, but the FBI agent does. So in for next season.

 
The outstanding acting on this show is what makes it so enthralling imo. I loved when Eli was scolding Nucky about the hole he has inside himself that he can never fill. So true.

Also wasn't that a priest reading from a bible outside of Gillian's prison cell? I took that to mean she was receiving last rites and was about to be executed for her crimes.

 
Next season brings a ton of questions with this finale:

Who owns the north side? Narcisse has to realize how close that bullet came to him and his welcome in AC is gone.

Eli works with Capone and represents the family in Chicago?

Don't even fully understand Mrs Schroeders roll - Does Rothstein rail her out to piss Nucky off?

How does Micky Doyle make it out of the season alive?

Is Masseria ready to beef with Nucky over the Libyan?

Def excited to see Van Alden become a full fledged gangster - love how he has come full circle.

 
For those who dislike the Narcisse character, is he really that far off from some of the over-the-top personalities of Garvey, Malcom X, Sharpton, Jackson, etc?

Watched the last scene again too...great directing to cut to black after the Daughter song, then flash back to Harrow on the train in silence.

I think that was her lawyer, presumably explaining that she would now be convicted.

 
Took me almost a week to watch it because of work stuff, but wow.

I was not one of those who disliked S3; I thought it was very entertaining and enormously satisfying in the finale. In fact, S3's finale was one of the best season finales of any of the dramas of which I've ever been a fan. One problem that created, though, is that there was no obvious way to pick up S4. In fact, although I would have been severely bummed, if BE had ended as a series with S3, I would have understood and ultimately thought it was this awesome show that lasted too short a time. I felt the exact same way about Mad Men after the S5 finale.

Unfortunately (and this is not entirely rock solid on my part because I haven't rewatched it yet and may change my mind), I thought that MM did not recover well with S6 from the "hole" that such a good S5 finale dug.

But BE did recover, and spectacularly. This show has such a wide variety of characters and such a large universe that it's got to be near impossible to manage it all coherently, and yet they did, and more. Both Eli and Chalky effectively lost their families because of their gangster lives, and both survived with the hole inside that Eli accused Nucky of having. Richard's death was heartbreaking but ultimately made perfect sense, even though of course I wish he had lived. They've set Will up to be Nucky's new right hand. Eli"s adventures will continue. Van Alden's transformation and full embrace of the dark side is fantastic. Capone and Rothstein continue to be magic on screen. I wanted "Knox" gone in a hail of machine gun fire (hey, it's fiction), but his exit was even more satisfying and significant for the story. They even handled MARGARET well and teed up some interesting possibilities with her for next season. Gillian's takedown was great, and I really hope she goes away now, closing the Darmody Arc of the series. The only misfire for me was Arquette, not because she can't act or because of her character (she can and I liked Sally), but because she was a formerly in-shape, well-known actress who showed up looking like a tank. Shallow I know, but I couldn't get past it.

MM can still pull back ahead with its stretched out final season, but right now BE is my favorite cable drama on TV, maybe favorite period. Bravo.

 
It's pretty sad when clothing from the 1920s looks a million times sharper than men's suits today. Where can I find the Gyp Rosetti clothing line for sale? I don't even care if it's out of style. I'll bring sexy back.

Yeah, they can widen lapels and things like that, but finding that old-school heavy wool is not always easy.

You should be able to find items like that. The styles of BE and Mad Men (2 very different looks) are pretty big right now for mens fashion. It won't be cheap though.
