***OFFICIAL*** Bronco RB thread (1 Viewer)

This will be a hot topic until September, I'm sure. Let's try to combine all specuation into one place so we can keep everything sorted out. I fully expect that the lead RB for the Broncos is not currently on their roster - he could come from FA, possibly a trade, could be the draft,.

I think that a trade is unlikely, however, and they will look for a RB in both FA and the draft, and let training camp sort out who will be the starter.

Lead need may be running back

As the Broncos make their final preparations for the NFL free agency

and trading period, which begins Friday, one position they are

looking hard at is running back.

The Broncos are taking a good look at finding a new lead back and can

be expected to be in the middle of the free agency picture. In the

trade market, Chicago's Thomas Jones and Buffalo's Willis McGahee are

expected to be available.

The top free agents include Indianapolis' Dominic Rhodes and

Tennessee's Chris Brown, a former Colorado star. Denver likely will

wait to see if some players are cut in salary cap moves.

Among the most intriguing possibilities are Tennessee's Travis Henry

and Baltimore's Jamal Lewis. Both are due huge bonuses and could get

cut.

As for restricted free agents, San Diego running back Michael Turner

is the biggest prize. But he likely will receive a high tender.

well, Jamal, if he is intriguing, is free to visit Denver anytime.
But don't the Broncos like a back that is a little more versatile than Jamal. Don't they like a guy that catches the ball more out of the backfield. Jamal had one good year catching the ball but that was it.

it's hard to say - they really don't focus the passing game around the RB. TBell is pretty aweful, IMO, in that phase of the game, but he's been kept around for a few years. Pass blocking is much more important to the Broncos schemes than receiving.

I'd love to grab T Henry should he become available.

For some reason Shanny likes Jamal so don't count him out.

I don't think Denver is interested in Rhodes, and you can forget about Turner since he was just given the highest tender.

Chris Brown sounds logical to me, considering their stable is not completely bare. Thus, if he does get injured...all is not lost.

It will be bare if they trade Tatum as expected to Detroit for Bly. Even more since the untimely death of Nash, but I can see Denver going after Brown because he will be cheaper and they won't have much cap room if they go after Bly and Graham.

Could Droughns return?
Denver has done a good job of not mistaking success for talent at their RB spot. They've repeatedly shipped off guys who overachieved (Gary, Anderson, Droughns) and not made any attempt to get them back. Droughns has reverted to his early form with his injuries and his best years are behind him. They struck gold with him when he carred the ball for them in a pinch. I don't see them wanting him back at all.

You're probably right.

Denver has no interest in bringing him back. They knew they sold high, and by now he is washed up.

of course, it all depends on asking price. I think they consider it if he comes in at a vet min contract.

Surprised to see there's no love for Mike Bell, if he adds a little strength and conditioning through the offseason I would say he deserves a shot.

Shanny himself seems to have no love for Bell (either one), so he seems destined for back-up duty.

I don't really know about that, he has yanked them both a couple of times its not the end of the world.
True, but reading some of the local articles, it sure seems to point to Shanny wanting to go in another direction this year...

***DARKHORSE CANDIDATE ALERT (IN MY OWN MIND)***

I'm calling my shot now, just to get on the record: WARRICK DUNN

Is familiar with Zone Blocking System through tutelege under Alex Gibbs, former Denver OL Coach, considered guru of system and who's been in charge of it in Atl the past few years...

Pound for pound is considered a tough and better-than-average pass blocker

A quality pass receiver, who was criminally underutilized by both Mora Jr and Vick in the Atl Offense

Seasoned Veteran with game wisdom and savvy feel for the game

Clubhouse Leader type, and Community Pillar as well - all around positive addition to locker room and team

Pretty well conditioned for his age, and despite some minor tweaks has remained relatively inj free

Atl under new regime, and Alex Gibbs gone. Petrino scheme may require different style of RB

Is 30+ yrs of age with a high contract #, and a reasonably like candidate to be cut by the Falcons

Would make a nice complementary tandem with current RB Mike Bell

Well, that's the way I think...

(I Tivo'd it... that is exactly what he said.) :D :D

How could someone who hosts an NFL show be so ignorant? And Golic didn't correct him.

Copied from another thread.

Dont for a second think that Denver needs to trade up to get Lynch.

IMHO its going to be Lorenzo Booker that gets the call on draft day. We all knows he has the speed to break it every play but what he does best, IMHO is on the second level. He has amazing lateral quickness and routinely jukes with the best of them. The ZBS will allow him to get out to that second level where he will flat out make LB's look silly. He also thrives on off-tackle runs, and is slippery and small enough to get lost in the mayhem. Dont look at stats alone here, they are misleading; had he played with a better--no, a decent set of Olinemen, we certainly would be talking about him with first day considerations.

The only knock is his size and aversion to contact- both of which the ZBS should minimize. Its almost a case where instead of him being the best fit for Denver, Denver may be the best fit for him. Remember this guy was a highly highly regarded prospect out of HS. And he's retained his athleticism.

Excellent, excellent hands as well. Shannys going to have a ball with this guy. thumbup.gif

Mike Bell actually played decent but they will be bringing in another RB. If they dont and draft Booker or a RB like that in rd 3 or so than I think Mike Bell will have the inside track on starting.

A chance? Sure, though I don't see it being likely. A highly-drafted rook/FA is more likely. My problem is with the "clearly" portion of his statement.

A highly drafted rookie is more likely, since when ?

 Is this a trick question?

You don't think a RB drafted 1st or 2nd would have a better-than-fair shot of being the starter?

Why is it that people can think Tatum automatically becomes the starter in Detroit, while Mike Bell doesn't stand a chance in Denver? Of course he does. If anyone's value went up because of this deal, it's Mike Bell's. Trade high fellas!

Shanahan has said that he thinks Kevin Barlow is a very good back and there have been rumors for years that the Broncos have considered trading for him. Barlow is a free agent and Denver's is in need of a back, isn't this a great fit? If he is available for cheap in Dynasty leagues, this might be the time to grab him.

The flaw in your logic: Barlow sucks.
