***Official Closer Thread: Kraft wasn't patient enough w/ Andrew Bailey (1 Viewer)

Girardi today announced that betances is not locked in to the closer job despite rampant speculation. Miller in the mix and for those of you doing deep mining, apparently so is David carpenter.
Isn't Betances' velocity way down this spring?

If you really like speculating, Miguel Castro is a dark horse candidate for the Jays. Gibbons seems reluctant to lock Cecil in as the closer, likes to use him in highest leverage situations possible, not restricted to 9th inning. Sanchez looked like a good bet but with the Stroman news may be in the rotation.

Castro was looking like a decent bet to crack the bullpen to start with and has been unhittable in spring. Was scheduled for 1 inning today, but he cruised through it and they left him in for a 2nd - healso k'd Wieters and Machado. Sitting 96-97, hitting 99.

He just turned 20 in December and has never pitched above A ball, but I'll be shocked if he isn't on the opening day roster, with an outside chance of him being day 1 closer.
This can't possibly be serious.
Cecil to start as closer, but Castro has made team and will be used like Sanchez was last year... you heard it here first.

Heard some good stuff about Castro today from I guy I like who saw him pitch and thought of you because you were the 1st to mention him. Glowing reports, electric arm

Do we have any favorites in the Qualls/Gregerson/Neshek trio of death?
Gregerson has good stuff but everytime he has had a chance he seems to be lacking stones
I've gotta go with Gregerson here, stones or not.
Yeah Neshek is better used for two batters or so and Qualls is Qualls. They paid Gregerson to close, gotta think he at least gets the first crack.

No doubt he'll get 1st crack. This is his 3rd bite of the apple , 1st two weren't successful

Lots of closers like that though.

Situations to watch

Houston: TBA (Gregerson/Qualls/Neshek)

Yankees: Betances has had velocity issues.

Boston: Probably Mujica until Uehara comes back

Tampa: TBA (Boxberger/Balfour/Jepsen) Add McGee in the mix when he's healthy

Dodgers: Committee until Jansen returns. Peralta may be first in line because nobody else has been effective. Could Rafael Soriano land here?

Oakland: Clippard until Doolittle returns. Ryan Cook is out of the picture. RJ Alvarez is an interesting dark horse.

Peralta definitely seems like the guy here. League sent for an mri and likely heading for the DL.

Based on age and performance, down the stretch last year, I wasn't touching him anyway.

Only downside to the injury is that other potential Bos closers got scooped up in the draft.

Is Clippard worth hanging on to? Short benches and we can start 2 RP. Clippard is my 3rd. Any chance Clippard keeps the job?
Doolittle has a rotator cuff injury, so yeah it's possible Clippard stays in there. But if Doolittle comes back completely healthy, it seems unlikely.

Chris Hatcher?
Seems like Mattingly is going to keep Peralta in the 8th so it can't hurt. I picked up JP Howell because Mattingly said he's use Howell in save spots if there are lefties coming up, and because Howell is a ratio protector anyway. Seems like anyone's guess since League is out, but Jansen may be back by the third week of April.

anyone sitting on Soriano? I could see the Mets looking his way if Meija has long term issues, Familia flamed out closing last year

I'm holding Soriano in Serious Biz dynasty but that's out of force of habit. I wouldn't roster him in a redraft because his situation is so unsettled. He's really only valuable if he lands someplace where there's a path to the 9th inning. He'll also probably need a few weeks in extended spring training to get in game shape after he signs.

I don't see the Mets meeting Boras' price.

Whether Familia has the arm and makeup remains to be seen but there is an opportunity for him to take the job and run with it. The Mets don't have enough investment in either Mejia or Parnell for them to automatically take the ball when they're healthy.

I don't have a ton of faith in Familia being successful but the possibility of him closing all season moves him ahead of guys like Chris Hatcher.
