***Official Closer Thread: Kraft wasn't patient enough w/ Andrew Bailey (1 Viewer)

Brett Cecil coming in Jays up 3-1, bases loaded, none out 8th inning to face Beltran. Exactly how he should be used but makes him iffy for saves if Jays will be first team in history to use their bullpen properly.

Nats used Blake Treinen last night in the 8th. Not sure if it means he's the first option behind Storen, they could opt for Barrett or the vet Thornton instead, but the stuff looked very good. If I had to predict who gets the saves in the event of a Storen injury I'd probably go with Treinen.

just added him. liked what i saw and think he is def. next in line if storen struggles or gets hurt.

Loup+Cecil= :tfp:
Gibbons set Cecil Up to fail... bases loaded none out in the 8th up 2 to get six outs in your 2nd game of the year?
He wasn't going to pitch the 9th. That was where you should use your best reliever.
And that's Cecil?
Based on history, yes. 12.8 K/9, 0.34 HR/9, 53.8 GB% last year. There's a reason he's in the closer role.

The only other real options there are Castro/Osuna but they're so unproven... maybe next time. Beat writer speculation around here is Osuna would likely get the save opp tonight, Cecil will get a couple chances to fail though, IMO. Strike that, Castro would close tonight.

ETA - If Cecil had gotten out of that in the 8th, Osuna would have pitched the 9th according to Gibbons.

If you really like speculating, Miguel Castro is a dark horse candidate for the Jays. Gibbons seems reluctant to lock Cecil in as the closer, likes to use him in highest leverage situations possible, not restricted to 9th inning. Sanchez looked like a good bet but with the Stroman news may be in the rotation.

Castro was looking like a decent bet to crack the bullpen to start with and has been unhittable in spring. Was scheduled for 1 inning today, but he cruised through it and they left him in for a 2nd - healso k'd Wieters and Machado. Sitting 96-97, hitting 99.

He just turned 20 in December and has never pitched above A ball, but I'll be shocked if he isn't on the opening day roster, with an outside chance of him being day 1 closer.
This can't possibly be serious.
Hope you took me serious.

Wih Cecil not quite back to where he should be, he'll be 7th/8th inning guy. If there's a save situation tonight, Castro gets it. #bluejays

Gibbons feels Castro has passed every test tonight and feels more than comfortable using him in that situation. #bluejays

For now, yes, Castro. They will play matchups though, Castro will be highest leverage righty reliever, Cecil lefty... no designated 9th inning only guy from what they're saying.

Pretty impressive ownage here.

Not happy as a Cecil owner though.

Thanks. Twitter consensus seems to be Castro. Grabbed him.
NV now has Cecil, Castro, Osuna and Aaron Sanchez on his Serious Biz squad. Duane Ward is available as a FA, you know you want him
If I started all of them, I'd have a nice tidy 3.1 IP, 5K, 0.00 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 1 SV line to show tonight.

Dropped 25% of my FAAB budget on Castro. I know that was probably stupid, but I like to blow my load early and the SP eligible closer is such an advantage in a league with no "P" slots, it's worth the shot.

Detroit situation is sticky. If Soria pitched well I could see him holding onto the job. DD?
If Soria is rolling along, there is no way IMO Nathan goes back to closing. Regardless, Nathan is gonna be out a month it seems so any decision to pick up Soria over someone else should have that as a primary consideration.

Soria and Clippard seem to be about equivalent to me

Same age, almost the same K%, GB%, and WHIP for their careers.

Soria's FIP and BB% are a little better, though Clippard has a better K/9.

A's and Tigers projected to be 2 wins apart this year, so save opportunities should be about equivalent.

Both seem like they are in position to hold the job long term, though maybe Soria slightly moreso?

I think that it will come down to that long-term question of who is more likely to hold the job, but it is hard for me to put a number on that.

Clippard is actually worse by a fair margin in GB%. I was misreading something.

Maybe the answer is just to drop Santiago Casilla and hold on to both Clippard and Soria. Casilla is worse statistically, but seems to me to have a better long-term hold on the spot.

Anyone want to just manage my team for me?

If there is a way to hold all 3, I'd try to do that. One of them is going to lose a job at some point and one will probably run away with a job, but it is hard to say which will be which five days into the season.

:goodposting:

Predicting these three is pure guesswork at this point. Careful analysis may get you from 33.333% to 33.334% accuracy. They all have the potential to perform well in the role. In roto, I'd hold them all and wait until their situations change. You can always catch up in IP over the next five months.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss said Monday that pitcher LaTroy Hawkins will get "a break" from closing duties, the Denver Postreports.

Rafael Betancourt will be in line to get a save opportunity Monday if needed, but the team could also use Adam Ottavinoor Boone Logan in the role. Ottavino is likely unavailable Monday after pitching Saturday and Sunday but has racked up seven strikeouts in 4 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and one walk. Logan has tossed three perfect innings in three appearaces.

As expected, Betancourt got the save today. What are the chances he runs with it? Weiss down with the whole experienced closer thing?

I'm not sold on Ottavino. He needs to have his wipeout slider sliding to be effective, which is a tough task in the thin air.

Betancourt has been effective before and was excellent in spring training. He's a fly ball pitcher, which can be tough in the thin air.

I like both better than Axford.

Heard a few weeks ago that they would consider Boone Logan in the 9th, too. Might have ourselves a committee, since Weiss can be such a weirdo. I own Ottavino, but I can understand the argument for Betancourt to get first shot.

Weiss apparently said something about wanting Ottavino to face the heart of the order whether it is in the 7th, 8th or 9th. So, probably a mixed bag for saves in COL.

What happened with Castro last night? Pitching the 8th In a tie game?
Thought that looked crazy when I was following the game cast, but according to what I read on twitter from Blue Jays writers, it was a high-leverage situation and they wanted him in there. I think he's still the favorite to close games (probably not tonight though).

#BlueJays went to Castro with 2 outs in 7th inning of tied game. Got out of inning but struggled a bit in the 8th inning.

Castro allowed bunt single to Souza, who stole and advanced on Martin error, then scored on SF. Overall line: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K

Also of note: Castro's walk was an intentional one to Evan Longoria.
Reads like usage based on high leverage situation.
