***OFFICIAL*** Combine Updates Thread (2 Viewers)

A bunch of times are changing. Even NFL.com is posting different numbers for different players in different spots.

It looks like Hill and Tim Jennings went ballistic and tied Fabian Washington at 4.29.

Jason Allen now has a 4.35. Sick time for him.

Joseph and Huff are at 4.36.

Only Cromartie joins them under 4.4.

Two guys sub 4.3 and 6 guys sub 4.4.

Wow, some smokin' official times coming in.

Tye Hill 4.30

Joseph 4.31

Huff 4.34

Bullocks 4.38

Looks like Hill may get his wish and be the fastest there.  Good for him.  Huff and Bullocks are good sized dudes to be running this fast... sheeesh, this draft is loaded.
Seems like a really fast track this year, no? NFL GMs are suckers for CBs with great 40-times, so Hill and Joseph can pretty much write themselves into the top 45 picks or so
Hill was already an easy first rounder as the best true cover corner in the draft. Now I think he has a chance to leapfrog Jimmy Williams, depending on his pro day results. I really like Hill and think Baltimore, Atlanta, or Miami could use him.
Nah. At that speed, Oakland will reach for him at #7. Either him, Davis as a blazing fast TE since Al Davis missed w/ Jolley/Johnson. Maybe Huff since they can't find a safety. Either way, they'll reach for speed like usual and miss out on a true stud like Ngata or Super Mario.

any news on abdul hodge????
I got nothin', and I have an IM source who has a cell phone source who is at the combine. eta: He said he wasn't going to lift, but he was going to do everything else. NFL.com is only posting top 10 scores or so. I had to seek info on Parham specifically. Hodge may be having a very bad showing. :dunno:

Hawk's 3 cone, short and long shuttle times are scary - he put together a better set of times for those drills than any RUNNING BACK.

Some other thoughts on LB standouts:

Brandon Johnson (Louisville)'s 40 time will help enhance his stock as a tall lean OLB on the edge that can chase down the play.

James Anderson (Virginia Tech)'s athleticism was apparent during Shrine Week and it was confirmed with a great day at the combine. Like Johnson, his strength is in chase mode, as both lack the bulk and strength to hold the point of attack.

I thought of Clint Ingram (Oklahoma) as more of a "gamer" type that wouldn't excel at the combine (such as guys like Tim McGarigle and Anthony Schlegel), and he really came through today. He's gaining momentum on draft boards after being overshadowed by Lance Mitchell and Teddy Lehman while in Norman.

Thomas Howard and Jon Alston have been discussed already, Alston really does look like a safety convert - Alston looked like a safety in coverage during drills at the Shrine Game and I expect him to make a Michael Boulware-type switch. Howard is a fantastic package of athleticism and size and has as much upside as any LB in the draft that doesn't share a name with a bird of prey.

Abdul Hodge 4.76

DeMeco Ryans 4.62

I have a lot of notes here. If you want info on someone I don't mention, ask and ye may receive. I'm just going to use this as a rough draft for a longer piece I'll blog later.

Defensive Notes

LBs

Hawk was a beast all day in positional drills. Very very impressive

Ryans was expected to struggle here. Nope. He's been very strong and considering Greenway's performance, Ryans may be LB2.

Thomas Howard may have something to say about that though. He's the best overall athlete of the LBs. This is sort of expected, but now it is proven.

Greenway did show why he is so good though. He was very good in positional drills. Quick feet, great change of direction, fluid hips, yada.

Hodge, Parham and some other lesser names were mostly disappointing.

Lesser names who impressed include Spencer Havner (caveat emptor), Dale Robinson, Clint Ingram, and the sleeper stars of the day-- James Anderson and Jon Alton.

DTs

Brodrick Bunkley (can people start spelling his name right, not Broderick, Brodrick). He kicked butt in the drills, nuff said. If Greenway fell, he's a good candidate to take his spot among elite (top 15) prospects. Think Cleveland.

The only knock on Ngata has been that he's maybe not a real hard worker and it showed today. He wore out and was lazy towards the end of workouts. He seemed "disinterested".

Rod Wright and Gabe Watson followed Ngata's example and seemed to wear down. Maybe it's just the big boys, but John McCargo hung with Bunkley all day and made a postitive impression. Not as positive as the sleeper star of the day-- Dusty Dvoracek. He's just a non stop worker, competitive, and fundamentally very sound in the drills.

DEs

Manny Lawson's 40 time (4.41) is just awesome, but he didn't disappoint in other work either. He's being compared to Jason Taylor. He is often regarded as a 3-4 OLB at the next level and he sort of ruled out the possibility by choosing NOT to work out with a bunch of DE/OLB conversion candidates. Maybe he just knows he made his mark and wanted to leave it at that. He'll have another opportunity to run through LB drills tomorrow.

Mario Williams didn't disappoint. He's probably top 5. Comparisons to Peppers are starting to look realistic.

Mark Anderson continued his impressive post season. He and James Wyche (name to remember) both had fast 40s and were impressive elsewhere. Not as impressive as the star of the day (not counting Mario and Manny)-- Mathias Kiwanuka. How about that? He stopped the bleeding. He blew everyone away, including Lawson, in the short shuttle, and that is considered the key event for DEs. He was also extremely sound fundamentally and ultra quick in the drills. Good for him.

eta: This took too long to cover the DBs, sorry.

Very quickly. Jason Allen may have been the star of the day. Him Antonio Cromartie, Donte Whitner and Michael Huff, proved they can do everything the smaller speed guys can do and Allen displayed the best hips, cuts, turns and reactions in the drills. His stock has done nothing but go up from his first day of workouts. Tye Hill is the best of the short guys, but they give him a good run for his money.

I've been high on Allen for a while as a potential replacement for Chris Hope with the Steelers' second-round pick - I'm hoping these #s don't project him too high to be available there.

Kiper posted some thoughts on ESPN [insider]

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft06/ins..._mel&id=2346725

I said Cutler is fast becoming one of the most overhyped players in the draft and that while he's going to be a top 15 pick and possible top 5 pick, nothing he's done has been enough to put him alongside Leinart and Young.
Are you getting obsessed with him? I offer Savage and Payton. You offer Kiper and Clayton. :P
Hey Chaos...actually I offered Charlie Casserly too, who outright said Cutler isn't in Leinart's league.

What makes this nothing short of astounding is that Allen's hip injury was so severe that some speculated that he may go undrafted when it happened. Not only is he totally over the injury, which has to be considered a huge victory for him, but he is actually back to top form!I am loving the safety class this year... not counting CB/S tweeners like Huff, Williams, and Allen, we still have Bing, Simpson, Whitner, Watkins, and Bullocks, who should all go on the first day. Its a great year to be restocking at OLB or safety.

Very true, and all the more reason why I don't think Pittsburgh is going to tender Hope the 5 year, $10+ million contract he's looking for....

Some thoughts:I am starting to think Sims could pass Greenway and Ryans for LB2 - Im looking at the Vikes switching to a cover 2 with a very weak LB corps and I can see Sims instantly becoming their Derrick Brooks.

Love the cavaet emptor on Havner - I see him as a bust in the making.

Im not too disappointed with Hodge's numbers - he'll still be a Trotter-type thumper in the middle.

McCargo is really dispelling any notion that having Mario Williams and Manny Lawson on either side of him is the reason he looked good at NC State. There's a real vacuum at DT after Ngata/Bunkley/Watson/Wroten (assuming teams arent scared off by his pot issues), and the #5 spot is there for the taking. McCargo is making his case for it.

I think it was Rob Rang at NFLDraftScout that described Dvoracek as a "bowling ball of butcher knives". I really like this kid and think he is over his alcohol problems. I am really liking the idea of him to the Stillers at 2.32 to be groomed as a replacement for Kimo/Smith, even if Keisel comes back.

The DE/OLB question about Lawson is a tough tough nut to crack. I would think Dallas would agonize over choosing him or Carpenter if they are both there at 18. Still, there is a real dropoff after Mario/Hali/Kiwi at 4-3 type DE, so a team looking to restock there late in the first could be convinced to cast Lawson as a DE because he would be the last real difference maker at that position. No matter what position he plays, he will make his mark.

Anderson has been on fire for the last month - he's probably in the second round mix now.

Wyche is a guy I paid close attention to during the Shrine week, because I always root for players from my alma mater (the 'cuse) - His first step is tremendously quick. He was harassing QBs all week and followed through with a defensive MVP performance in the actual game. He's got that long Kearse/Taylor body type, and should be a great pass rush specialist in the NFL at worst.

Another big story among the DEs is that Dumervil is just falling off the face of the earth after an ultraproductive year at Louisville.
