everyone in this thread is taking the thing about 100% more seriously than the average Joe and that's as good as you can hope for without additional government intervention.

I really don't know the answer. I'd speculate that the spread is similar to the flu, but that it's easier to "catch" ...easier for the virus to take hold, given our lack of any internal defenses.

Are you talking about the U.S.? You think tens and tens of millions legitimately sheltering vs. dozens is the current ratio? I'm not seeing that at all.
I'm a big fan of optimism, but only if it is used as inspiration that tough actions drive hopeful returns. I'm not sure our society does well, as a whole, with delayed gratification. I hope I'm wrong.

I believe it's entirely possible there were thousands of people in the US that had it in early Jan (countless China to Seattle flights just for example) and the hospital system was not overrun because the number of confirmed cases only reflects those that were tested (we weren't testing at all then), whereas the real number of cases is probably 10x higher. But if the actual mortality rate is only .5% instead of 5%, that makes a huge difference in the projections and we now know that a significant percentage of cases show no symptoms. There are far more people that will show no to mild symptoms vs. severe cases.
If NBA players, celebrities, congressmen, mayors, Andy Cohen, etc all have it now, that likely means there are at least hundreds of thousands or more that already have it or had it in the US, not just 30,000. Which means the mortality rate is much lower, which means the world is ending projections almost certainly won't hold true.
There are also appear to be genetic factors in play here in addition to age and underlying health conditions. We really won't know until there is much more testing and research on this disease.

There is a balance to be reached for sure. I just think our country needs to collectively stop acting like a 7 year old stomping their feet after being told to do something they do want to do. We have seen what it takes from other countries, but we dont want our sports and bbqs taken away. Again, this is where the top down leadership is needed. This shouldn't be left up to cities and the "virus police". Tell the country to lockdown for a couple weeks, why, and how they are going to help after.
Yes, there can be optimism and we have the knowledge and capability to get through this, but it needs to be a collective effort.

Daycare will have to operate under temporary pandemic license. Max 6 children per room. Recommend no common space. Trying to keep children of same parents together.

I hear ya man, and I don't disagree that stronger government intervention may be necessary. But I think the relentless doom and gloom is counterproductive and just leads to more stress and eventual panic.
Maybe you guys are all seeing people ignoring the warnings, but I can tell you here it's a ghost town outside - about 5-10% of the normal vehicle traffic, lots of stores closed, public parks closed, etc. And that's just a minor hick town in N Florida. The US numbers are gonna go up for a while, because we've just started increased testing and identifying cases, but a lot of people are taking this stuff seriously, and I'm hopeful that will have a positive effect.

Along the lines of your last many posts, do you look down on the golf community that is going out there and playing all day right now? I'm still playing Tennis and am booked solid for the next week or two but I do feel a little guilty going and showing up to play and seeing 16 Soccer Fields on the other side of the hill completely empty or close to it. I'm just asking is it fair? Because I am likely to continue playing until I absolutely cannot get into the courts. They will not allow more than 4 on a Court right now and they shut down all organized leagues, etc...but the social groups are still allowed to play or in groups of 4 with a coach or instructor.
Another one to think about is all the boaters down here gathering at the sand bars just offshore or even in the Intercoastal waterways, are they going to close all the boat docks?

Here are my conclusions to date based on my own research
1. This originated in China in Nov and was probably in the US by late Dec/early Jan, particularly in the Seattle area.
2. The real number of cases to date in the US is 10x than what is currently confirmed. So 300,000 instead of 30,000 as of today.
3. Over 30% of cases are asymptomatic. They show no symptoms, don't get sick, but can spread it.
4. The real mortality rate is between .1 - .5%. Worse than the flu but considerably less than what is feared if the asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic cases are several times higher than the number of currently reported cases.
I think our government officials are taking the right approach and that this will peak in 4 weeks and drop off within 8 weeks which will also coincide with warmer weather.
I reserve the right to be wrong about all of these things, but I think we have many reasons to be optimistic. Italy's numbers just took a positive turn today as well.

It almost is by default with most businesses closed, bars closed, restaurants delivery or takeout only. The only thing left to shut down are the beaches and boat ramps. The beaches are far less crowded now that they shut down car access and are enforcing distancing rules. As long as it remains the same as a city sidewalk where people go out for walks and maintain distance I think that makes sense. The people driving to the boat ramps and taking their boats out and congregating on sandbars need to stop. Want to go out and fish? Fine. Congregate and party on a sandbar? Not so much.

Wow really? I thought churches were adhering to the 25 person max recommendation given by CDC last week. All of the churches in my area of Oregon are either closed or online only.

I have location and Bluetooth turned off on my phone, I will turn them on. Big brother might not be watching but he is storing every bit of info he can get on you. FB even tracks people who do not have a FB account and assigns them an ID #.
