Why do we keep setting the bar at "completely preventing me from getting covid"?? The PSF, and now the FFA are the ONLY places I ever here that and I'm in the middle of freakin' Trump country...even the people here seem to understand the objective at this point.

I didnt get the shot. for me, it was "sold" as a vaccine. hence, preventing you from getting it. then they changed the definition of vaccine. makes me mad. I know what a flu shot does. it was never sold as a vaccine.

And BTW, this revisionism regarding the narrative that we thought the vaxxes would stop transmission and then later changed our minds when data proved they didn't is just that. Revisionism.

The reality is we knew from the original clinical trials that the vaxxes didn't stop transmission. But that inconvenient fact didn't stop the media and politicians from spinning it (i.e. lying) and telling everyone that they did stop transmission. Even worse, they used that blatant falsehood to divide us as either vaxxed virtuosos or dirty selfish grandma killers. They even went so far as to use that same narrative to justify destroying people's careers by convincing private industry and nearly all levels of govt into giving employees the 'choice' of jab or job. Disgustingly shameful period in our recent history, but it's important we remember it for what it was and not pretend it was something else, lest we allow them to do it again to us someday soon.

I think that was the big push on why EVERYONE should get the jab. I have no idea if it helps a little or none at all, being on the safe side when my wife is going through chemo was an easy decision for me... plus, I am under a couple of high risk categories. Last thing we need is me down with any significant illness when my wife is often times out for the count.

There's a vaccine for rotavirus that is given by mouth. Not all vaccines are shots even though MOST vaccines are shots.

So, just because the word "shot" has been used to describe it doesn't change the fact that ALL of these substances used to help prevent and/or limit the effects of certain infectious diseases by activating our immune system are called vaccines. Whether they do so at a 99% effective rate or 10% effective rate, they are still called by the same name.

Arguing against the above and considering them separate items is no different than arguing that the Earth is flat. It's just wrong. Great post, gianmarco. Shots, sprays and pills are all vaccines. Some vaccines prevent infection altogether, including transmission, while others limit severe disease. Still others lessen the risk of long term infectious complications, like shingles. Heck, some vaccines treat cancer as well.

All vaccines accomplish their goals by harnessing the body’s immune system. And they do so with varying success, as none are 100% effective.

It’s okay not knowing all those details, but refusing to revise your opinion once someone provides accurate info is the definition of bigotry.

If you're going to come up with your own definition for vaccine, then apply it objectively across all instances. That's all I ask. However, when you do, you'll realize that you are either wrong or there's no such thing as a vaccine according to you. My wife had the really bad sore throat from the drainage. She bought some of those chloraseptic (sp?) throat drops and she said they helped a lot and was way better than their spray. Might want to give those a shot.

It’s weird (to me at least) how differently people see the vaccine. I never once took it thinking I would never get COVID - I just don’t want to die from it or even have a bad case. Same reason I get the flu shot. I do think messaging was bad and there was some wrong information on transmission (that also changed as the variants changed). But none of that mattered to me and still doesn’t.

Funny. I get the flu shot for the exact OPPOSITE reason. I don't fear a serious case or hospitalization. I just don't want to actually get the flu. All the years i got the flu shot i never got the flu. The one year i didnt i got the flu and it sucked for a few days. Don't wanna feel like that again. It's the same EXACT reason I got the original covid vaccine and booster. But once I started realizing it doesn't prevent infection I lost all interet in getting anymore boosters. If they get the efficacy up to a reasonable prevention level similar to at least the flu shot then I'll reconsider getting it.

I think they are attempting to do sequencing on flights out of China, but that's probably the best info we'll have for the time being and of course that will be delayed. They're even having to estimate number of cases, deaths, etc. But from what I've seen on Twitter (doctors, boots on the ground in hospitals, etc.) it's ugly.

... The best we can tell, BF.7 is spreading in China, which is an Omicron subvariant about 3 evolutionary steps behind what is spreading in most of the world. But, a new variant of concern could appear. (This is more possible than probable because transmission is high everywhere).

Just like cases and deaths, though, China is not reporting genomic data. In other words, we don’t know if and how the virus is changing and what it may (or may not) mean to the international community.

Oh I agree completely and pretty much the same here in my area. People still coming to work with "cold symptoms" minus testing (bc it's not required or even encouraged any more). This is what frustrates me about their messaging. I'm definitely not advocating for mandates of any kind at this point, but a lack of improvement in the awful messaging (or complete lack of messaging) is doing us all a great disservice, IMHO. And until this last update we weren't in High transmission here yet. I go back to work Monday. I'm breaking out the KF94s again for any close quarters contact and I haven't worn a mask in months.

Day 5 for me and all my symptoms are gone except my sore throat hurts just as much as day 2 when it developed. Google says this is fairly common with Omicron and I tend to have bad sore throats whenever I get sick but I need some relief. I can't take this sore throat anymore.

My 13 year old also caught covid from me. His symptoms lasted a day and were limited to a stuffy nose. I'm glad he didn't get it as bad as me. We made the choice not to get him vaccinated and comfortable with that decision.

Sweden has been an interesting one to follow. From the outside, it looked like they "did nothing" but I also read somewhere that something like ~80% of Swedes surveyed indicated that they changed their behaviors (masking, traveling, no large gatherings, etc.) -without having been told to. Interestingly enough, compared to the larger neighboring countries their approach looked to work. Compared to Norway, though, which is more closely relatable in population density from what I've been able to find, not nearly as good. Whether you realize it or not, you're inferring "100%" in your definitions...at least that's how it comes across. By that standard there's never been an actual "vaccine". These shots that we've been provided most definitely stimulated the immune system to produce immunity to disease and has protected millions from the disease..., especially death. Does the vaccine that was created before these current strands ever existed keep you from catching it 100%? No...of course not.

yeah, I think the government lied and Im sure I can find articles and videos where they say "take the shot to stop the spread" or something to that manner. and that was lying.

The “shot” did do that against the original strain that it was designed to combat. Delta and later omicron multiplied too fast in the nasal pharynx to prevent spread. But the vaccine and immune system reacts swiftly enough to prevent the virus from moving throughout the body basically. So less illness/symptoms and hospitalizations and death.

Fair enough. In those situations, that's when employers need to step up and offer better sick time benefits. The work culture in America rewards and praises people for showing up and continuing to work hard even when sick. That needs to go away.

No you can't. You're accepting some risk every time you leave your house. It's not a fundamentally different type of risk than what you experience every time you decide to drive your car on the road. You can wear a seat belt, drive the speed limit, and come to a complete stop at stop signs, but that just makes you safer, not safe.
