DJ to the Lions? Only a few to go before the Lions are up!

Two DBs gone so far..no other IDP's off the board yet.

there it is... ware & merriman first non-CB IDPs off the board.ware is being compared to mcginest for parcells & haley for jones... haley would be a somewhat undersized 4-3 DE nowadays (though supposedly kearse played at 230 week of super bowl)... ware could play with his hand on the ground in 4-3, & stand up in 3-4.does merriman play primarily LB or DE in SD 3-4?sometimes 3-4 LBs don't get a lot of tackles, so if they don't get a lot of sacks that could be dicey (see babin, though the former DE still could make a smooth transition to LB & be a stud).any thoughts on who might be a more natural DE, and if the need arises, who has the better athleticism to project making a smooth transition to LB?DJ is somewhat in free fall... there has been increasing scout chatter that he could be too finesse, and would like to see him not run around blocks so much.thomas davis will be off board soon.edit - make that REALLY soon... little sooner than i expected... make that davis, not DJ as first LB off board... DJ officially in free fall.

The problem with the Dallas picks is that they're putting in an entirely new system in there, so we have no clue what's going to happen. Besides, they've drafted 3 DE's, so God knows where (or if) each guy's going to play. Derrick Johnson at KC probably will start for them. Ruud at Tampa will probably start at MLB for them as they rebuild. I like Cody too as a Ravens DE. Here's a dark horse: the 'Skins picked up ILB Robert McCune out of Louisville. They lost Antonio Pierce, and assuming that Barrow's knee never heals right, McCune's the only true MLB on their roster who can play. He's also 26 (military service) so he's a bit more mature than the average rookie. I could see him starting if he has an impressive camp.

what do you guys think about Thurman in Cincy and Totupu in SD?
Where is he supposed to fit in? Hardy's the guy at SLB, and Simmons at WLB, and they have two young guys in the middle. Seems like a depth/developmental pick at this point. Admittedly, I don't have a huge amount of insight into Cincy though.

Isn't Hardy injured, or has some serious problems? If thats the case, then Thurman could find a way into the lineup...

The way I understand the situation (follow is closely since I have Johnson and Miller) is that Hardy is a likely June 1st and Johnson would be an option to slide outside. Thurman was drafted to protect the middle since Webster had a major setback and had to have a 2nd operation. There is some talk that Webster might be done as a Bengal. Simmons is safe for now and Johnson has been all but assured of a job somewhere.Tom

Nick Collins (51) - S - GBsomebody has to start at safety for Green Bay.why not Collins ?Oshiomogho Atogwe (66) - S - St.L.if Tinoisaoma cannot make the switch to S, then Oshio will start.

some of my favorite rookie IDPs for dynasty:Donte Nicholson, SS, TB - a steal in the 5th, and he should have a chance to get in the mix if phillips is inconsistent - punishing hitter in the secondary who should rack up tackles if he gets a chance to play.Thomas Davis, SS/LB, Car - this guy is just going to stalk around like a lion and headhunt behind that carolina d-line. i see the makings of an elite defense in carolina, with Davis playing a Derrick Brooks/Rodney Harrison role. Has the potential to become of the best defensive playmakers in the NFL.Barrett Ruud, MLB, TB - another easy pick as quarles is on his way out the door. A true "QB of the defense" LB who should stay in the middle.Channing Crowder, LB, MIA - Kendrell Bell type talent and fragility - WLB candidate because of his speed - chance for big time production with big time injury frustration.Alfred Fincher, LB, NO - I like his skills, but the LB corps in new orleans is a mess. He should emerge, but you might have to be patient.Robert McCune, MLB, WAS - My bet to replace pierce in the middle long term - he will have a trotter like presence.Goo Wallace, ILB, PIT - Goo has the mean streak and motor that we love in steelers LBs. The steelers are not afraid to let more expensive vets walk and promote kids if they show promise - Goo could replace farrior or foote within 2 years if he's a good fit in pittsburghLance Mitchell, MLB, ARI - all he did was lead one of the best Ds in the country. Hayes will shift to WLB to give up to mitchell before you know it. From an IDP standpoint, i would say Mitchell has as much upside as any LB in the draft - he is a do everything MLB.

Anybody have a take on what Matt Roth DE Mia. might do this year? From everything I have read, he appears to be an animal at DE. Any chance he takes over the LDE spot this year?

Ya know what? my guess (and purely a guess) is that he ends up as an OLB in Saban's 3-4. If I had to peg a comparable player from recent history, it would be Kevin Greene of the Steelers. I just get the feeling that Roth is a bit small for a 3-4 DE, but would be a monster pash-rushing OLB in a 3-4 scheme. It may take a year of transition (if the Fins play some 4-3 this year) where Roth plays part-time as a rookie DE, but makes the change to OLB next season assuming Saban makes the full-time 3-4 switch in '06.

Just my random thoughts on Roth...

As a 'Skins homer, I have to second this one. He could/should be the starter by Week 1 2006, and perhaps sooner if word of Barrow's recovery is greatly exaggerated. Without Barrow, he's the only true MLB on the roster.

Is Dan Cody going to be playing OLB or DE for the Ravens this year? They just released Boulware so that leads me to believe he and Thomas will man the OLB spot. If he does project as an OLB, does he have any chance of starting this year?

I thought I read a quote today in an article about Boulware's release indicating that Cody would be among those to replace him.

Ravens | Cody Progressing at LB - from www.KFFL.comMon, 23 May 2005 12:37:38 -0700

Steve DeClue, of the Baltimore Sun, reports Baltimore Ravens rookie LB Dan Cody has shown progress while making the position change from defensive end to linebacker. Cody intercepted a pass and had a pass deflection during final drills at the team's passing camp Monday, May 23.
