** Official ** Eagles 2008 Thread (2 Viewers)

i'd also like to note that with the Eagles not having to pay 1st round $$$ they could possibly give an extention to a certain CB.........
Was thinking the same thing, but was almost afraid to write it.I'm not one who feels we HAVE to get rid of Lito...you can never have too many decent CB's....just one of those wanting a quality #1 WR

Info gathered from the FBG news blogger:

RT Jamaal Brown was selected 13th overall by the Saints in the 2005 draft. In 2006 he was moved to LT. He injured a leg in November 2007. Not much else there.

Well, you guys know how I feel about Lorenzo Booker; so adding him does little to excite me. Obviously he proved he can catch lots of passes and, as long as he's an ace on special teams, this just really means the Ryan Moats Era is done. I was initially perplexed by the acquisition of a 2009 1st rounder. However, if it's part of a cache the Eagles are going to dangle to acquire a veteran receiver, I'm all for it. Now we have an extra 1st and can offer that up depending on how tenuous some of these WR situations become as camp gets going.

Assuming we don't do anything with that 2009 1st rounder, it's hard to take a lot out of today's haul.

Of course I'm happy about DeSean Jackson. I wouldn't have blinked if we took him in the 1st round, simply because he's a special returner and we've needed that more than almost any other team for the last few years. And while I respect that Trevor Laws was probably the best player available, we have absolutely no need for him in 2008.

Probowler in '06... not so stellar in '07. Could have been playing injured however. Arent the Saints set at CB now however?

RE: Jammal Brown (note, it's not Jamaal)

Three years All Big 12 (2002-2004)
Started at RIGHT tackle at Oklahoma
Scouts believed he could play LT in pros b/c he was a good athlete
Was considered a great pass blocker, above average run blocker
Great leverage, but didn't have a thick trunk
13 on the Wonderlic
Some thought he might fall into 2nd round
Saints took him 13th overall
6'6", 313 pounds
Started 13 games as a rookie, 15 games each of next two years
Made Pro Bowl in 2006
Was less effective in 2007
Many thought he blew his knee out last year, but it turned out to be a strain and he returned
The Saints willingness to offer him for Lito, Shockey and to move up to 2nd has people convinced Brown is an injury red flag

So the Carolina Panthers quite possibly saved us from Otah and delivered DeSean Jackson???

;) :D

IMO Jackson is a late first round talent, and will make immediate contributions on returns. Laws grades out to a solid second round pick who will add depth to the DLine behind Patterson and Bunkley. So, pretty average 1st/2nd round picks if that were the be all/end all of the draft.

What makes it really good is the extra first in 2009, used either as bait for a #1WR or kept to add an impact player next year in the draft. Also, moving up from the 5th to 4th round is a nice bonus, and the extra 4th from Carolina turned into a 3rd string RB/special teams ace in Booker.

Philly added two players worth the 1st/2nd round picks they began the day with, added a 23 year old pass catching back/special teams guy to replace Moats, moved their 5th up over a full round tomorrow, saved first round cash, and acquired an extra first next year. Very good job.

I would love to see a scenario where they keep Lito. Use the first round cash they saved to extend him. I have no problem with 3CB's that damn good. I hope its possible. Perhaps that extra first can be used to leverage a WR if the opportunity presents itself in June.

 I was just coming here to post something like this, but you did a much better job then I would have. They had two picks and I'm fine with the two players they got. Add in everything else and this looks pretty good to me.If they work out a good deal for Lito and get rid of him I will be fine with it. But if they find a way to keep him and make him happy..... wow, this defense/special teams will have a chance to be sick next year.Edit - In Andy's press conference he basically says he is sure they will be moving around a lot in the next few rounds. We would all guess that anyway, but it could still be an interesting day tomorrow.

Where are these Jamaal Brown rumors coming from? He is one year removed from being an all-pro. I think he'll be traded rather than re-signed, and the injuries are a concern, but no way are the Eagles getting Brown and a 3rd for Lito. Brown >>> Lito.

Not an Eagles fans, but good job taking the Panthers #1 in '09.

I like some of the moves they made but the fact that they were moving back instead of up was a little unsettling. We had 11, then 12 picks. What are we going to do with all those guys? Just to have competition? Practice squad? Just seems like a waste and it would have been better to try and package and use them to move up into the first or second, guess we can still do that for the third and even fourth but is there talent there that will make a difference? Will they be swapping them for 2009 picks so we have ammo next year?... I guess so.

We'll see what tomorrow brings, hopefully Reid and the FO have some diamonds in the rough in mind and some tricks up their sleeve for all those picks and Lito.

Even if the draft isn't living up to evryone's expectations at least:

Flyers just evened the series 1-1 (even though it should be 2-0). :lmao:

Sixers are up 2-1 on the Pistons and looking strong at home.

Phillies just beat the Pirates to guarantee at least a .500 April for the first time in ???.

:lmao:

That's my thing, too. We gave up a 4th for Lorenzo Booker, and took two players today. So we're left with, what, NINE picks tomorrow? C'mon, there's no way even half of those guys have a shot at making the roster. Hopefully we'll target a number of guys early tomorrow and use our picks to get up and grab them early in the 3rd round.

I know what you guys are saying, but you do have to remember that most of those picks we had were very late. I think 6 of the 11 were 5th or later to begin with. Those picks won't get you anywhere except up a spot or two in the rounds they are in. In the first 3 rounds we only had our own 3 picks, right? There wasn't much they were going to be able to do with those lower picks in the first two rounds today. I think I looked at the trade chart and all of the Eagles 5th, 6th, and 7th round picks would only have moved them into the 4th round for one pick.

along the lines of ARs press conference, they have to make moves tomorrow. They just don't have the roster spots for 12 draft picks, plain and simple. No idea what you're going to get for a bunch of 5-7 rd picks. But, throw in Lito and next years #1, and who knows?

And like JW says, maybe they just are willing to play that game of Chicken with those teams who are refusing to trade their unhappy WRs. Maybe Anquan causes enough problems in Az to force a trade just before or at the beginning of camp? Maybe Ocho Stinko does the same?

Anyway you slice it, i agree with just holding onto to Lito unless there is a legit offer on the table. I have no problem running Lito/Asante/Brown/Dawk against most squads they play this year.

Quick thought on the 1st for 2009. If Cincy even considers moving Johnson, it wouldn't be until after June 1st to lighten the cap hit. So perhaps the trade today was to set up a run at Chad without hurting their draft next year? Just a thought.

I think the writing is on the wall fellas... The Eagles are looking forward to life after McNabb and I have no problem with it. I think the Eagles did very well for themselves yesterday. I really hope they can smooth things over with Lito. Its quite clear the NFL is moving to the spread offense and I think its going to be extremely necessary to have a top nickel corner on your roster to deal with 3 and 4 WR sets. Lets hope they can fill in some spots on day two and make a few moves to make sure they get the players they want.

Considering what the Redskins did, I think 3 corners is a good idea.Santana Moss, ARE, Kelly, Thomas, Cooley and Fred Davis..... that can get scary.

Where do the Eagles go with their third? OL has been picked over. Would they pick up another WR that's dropped like Doucet or Manningham? Or a safety like DaJuan Morgan or Zbikowski?

Safety...Smith or Morgan would be nice.

Smith gone. Philly three picks away. Maybe Morgan at S or Avril at LB.

That pick tells me that maybe they are going to move Sheldon Brown to safety and keep Lito. Otherwise, why wouldnt they have taken DeJaun Morgan.

I just don't see how there's even room on the roster for Smith unless they plan on trying him out at LB. I guess since they did the same with Gocong, that could be the plan. But is there a crime, you know, in drafting a linebacker to play linebacker? Sheesh.

They better start calling teams with few picks that want some in an effort to push some of this "pick bounty" to the future.

We can't possibly keep more than 5-6 rookies on the roster this year.

Are they going to have SMITH come up with a mystery injury to spend '08 on the IR because there is no room for him? Didnt that happen with Gocong as well. I heard rumors that Gocong wasnt ready to contribute his first year so his injury was a little iffy.

I'm calling a 6th/7th pick for Philly:

mytagid = Math.floor( Math.random() * 100 );document.write("

Jeremy Ito, PK, Rutgers

Why?

The Eagles lost their E.J. "Zephrem" Cochrane camp leg. They struggle to bring in a 2nd PK for the preseason because no one will displace Akers. So they will draft a PK to bring one in.

I think the Rutgers kid is pretty good.

I'm also callling Omar Cuff to Philly either later or UDFA.

Hey everybody!

It's time for everyone's favorite game show, Who's That Mormon!!

Yes, we all know that Andy Reid has strong Mormon ties, and there's nothing wrong with that at all - but he does seem to always pick at least one player with a Mormon background. Even in 2007, Nate Ilaoa came out of nowhere (well, you can't miss him in Hawaii) and was a late late pick in the 7th.

So - who will it be this year?

Tune in before 7PM to find out more!!!

I love the McGlynn pick! Everything I read was that he was the most versatile lineman in the draft. Well done Birds.

Well there's our Tackle...

Michael McGlynn

OG | (6'4", 311, 5.379) | PITTSBURGH

Scouts Grade: 67

Strengths: Plays with good balance and leverage. Is technically sound and does a great job with hand placement. Very consistent with his first step and angles. Shows adequate-to-good overall strength. Drives his legs as a run blocker and works hard to sustain once he has locked on. He can generate a push as a drive blocker versus most DE's. Shows the base to anchor versus powerful bull rushers. Experienced, durable and reliable; enters 2007 season with a streak of 31 consecutive starts. High motor player with passion for the game. Has versatility because of experience as a long-snapper on PATs and FGs.

Weaknesses: Limited athletically. Lacks good quickness and struggles versus top speed rushers. Does not set quickly enough to prevent elite pass rushers from turning the corner. Size is adequate but not good. Is tough and has adequate overall strength, but he lacks explosive power to jar defenders with hand punch. Lacks ideal wingspan. Might be better suited to play guard in the NFL.

Overall: McGlynn arrived at Pittsburgh in 2003 and was redshirted. In his first three seasons (2004-'06), he played in 35 games (including 31 consecutive starts) at right tackle. He moved to right guard as a senior, but was shifted back to tackle after the Panthers' first three games. He played all 12 games (11 starts) in 2007, but he didn't start the opener because he was hampered by the affects of offseason surgery to repair the labrum in his left shoulder. McGlynn played through the injury during the second half of the 2006 season. McGlynn has just decent size and he's not a great athlete, which is why his best fit in the NFL should be inside at guard where he's better protected. However, he is a durable, technically sound, tough and experienced prospect that loves playing the game of football. His versatility as a long-snapper also adds to his draft value. McGlynn may wind up becoming a good value in the middle of Day 2 as a reserve that could back up right tackle and both guard spots in the NFL.

The Eagles are doing very well.

I dont like/understand the Smith pick but then again I dont know a thing about him. I LOVE the McGlynn pick and really like the Quentin Demps pick. They are finding good quality in the 4th.

As Jeff said though...what's the point of having 12 draft picks if you can't possibly make use of them? At this juncture it would be a guarantee that half our selections have no hope of making the roster. Just don't get it.

Yeah, and the trade value for those picks is rapidly decreasing. So an "active second day" (as we were claimed to have had) is getting more and more out of the question.Maybe the plan is to draft as much as possible, and choose which ones you want later? Considering the randomness in drafting this isn't so bad..? Trying to come up with something here.

Well we're nearing the end of the 4th round so, as you said, there is very little incremental value to packaging picks and moving up at this point. Looks like they're just going to take BPA on a bunch of guys and make it a really tough rookie camp; keeping the best special teamers. :X Really not at all how I envisioned this weekend turning out. I haven't been this disappointed in a draft in ages; which may just mean they knocked the cover off the ball.

Quintin Demps

Selected by: Philadelphia Eagles

Round: 4

Pick (Overall): 18(117)S | (5'11", 206, 4.389) | UTEP

Scouts Grade: 60

Strengths: Shows adequate range, tracks the ball well and is experienced playing a centerfielder-type role. Disciplined and rarely gets caught out of position. Explodes out of backpedal and shows good closing speed coming forward. Opens hips quickly, flashes the ability to change directions quickly and has the potential to develop quality man-to-man cover skills. Reads quarterback's eyes, baits quarterbacks and jump routes. Catches the ball very well and is a playmaker in coverage. Flashes the ability to time hits well and occasionally will separate ball from body. Does a decent job of staying low and undercutting bigger ball carriers. Reaches top speed quickly and flashes the ability to get to the quarterback when asked to blitz. Plays with emotion and is a leader on the field. Has experience returning kickoffs, flashes big-play ability in that role and can contribute on special teams.

Weaknesses: Lacks elite size, takes too long to shed blocks and can get engulfed when lines up in the box. Avoids blockers rather than stacking them up and creates running lanes in the process. Doesn't always square up to the ball carrier, doesn't always wrap upon contact and is an inconsistent open field tackler. Footwork is inconsistent and gets spun around at times. Plays pass before run on every snap and can be a step late filling.

Overall: Demps arrived at UTEP in 2003 and redshirted the year. In his first three seasons (2004-'06), he appeared in 35 games (all starts) and amassed 203 tackles (one for a loss), 12 interceptions and 15 pass breakups. As a senior in 2007, he played in all 12 games (11 starts) and had 72 tackles (4.5 for losses), two fumble recoveries, a blocked kick, nine pass breakups and five interceptions (including a pair of 100-yard returns for touchdowns). Demps missed one game in 2004 because of a hamstring injury. Demps is far more effective dropping into coverage than he is filling against the run. However, he is a very good natural athlete, which was confirmed during his outstanding combine workout. He also has a nose for the ball, displaying the ability to make momentum-shifting plays in coverage and on special teams. Demps projects as a versatile reserve DB in the NFL and should come off the board in the middle rounds.

And with our last 4th round pick we draft a 5'10" corner who can't play in space, has a criminal record and...wait for it...tore his knee up in January and will be out for AT LEAST the entire 2008 season.
